Organizations that compete for attention in the marketplace face a strategic decision: whether to target a specialized niche or diversify to reach a broader market. Previous research has extensively analyzed the specialization dilemma faced by for-profit firms. We extend the analysis to knowledge-sharing groups in the marketplace of ideas. Using data on over 1,500 technology groups collected from an online event-organizing platform over a fifteen-year period, we measure the effect of topical focus, rarity, novelty, and technical exclusivity on audience growth, retention, and sustained engageme

This thesis investigates how people's ideas lead to technical innovations, and looks at the problems and setbacks along the way. The research uses data gathered from two major case-studies, several minor ones, and from a wide range of potential sources of finance for innovation. The majority of this data was obtained through free-format interviews with the people involved, although one of the major case-studies used personal letters to access an innovation at the turn of the century. This demonstrated the utility of 'historical' data for management research. The orientation is qualitative and

Abstract Idea visualization is a critical tool in a product development process. From early idea sketches to 3D prototyping, designers often visualize ideas for themselves and others in the process of feedback and refinement. The viewers of these ideas (clients, investors, collaborators, and consumers) rely on these visual presentations to evaluate the potential of a designer’s idea. Although sketching ideas is common practice in the product design industry, little is known about the extent to which presentation quality influences viewers’ evaluations of ideas.
