Abstract:
World Wide Web (www) has achieved an important role in communication, information sharing and service delivery now-a-days. World Wide Web consists of millions of web sites and web based applications which are deployed and can be visited all over the world without the limitation of time and geographical boundaries. Web site usability, security and reliability consider some of the core aspects in designing of web sites. In this thesis, we explore possible tensions and tradeoffs between usability and security issues in web site design. We discuss web site usability issues in terms of technical and social aspects. We discuss web site security in terms of usability and offer some recommendations for secure website design without compromising the web site performance. We also highlight the importance of ease of navigation and other aspects of user interface design. In order to explore these issues, we have chosen to review the related literature. We have also conducted interviews with professionals who are mainly concerned with web site usability. Two sample interviews are available at the end of this thesis report.
Human factors and usability issues have traditionally played a limited role in security research and secure systems development. System designers have disregarded usability concerns for the reason that they are not acquainted with them or sometimes they do not take into account the importance of the human factors. Addressing issues of usability and human factors could be an important part of way out for today‟s security tribulations.There is increasing agreement that we need to design secure systems that people can actually use, but less agreement about how to reach this goal.

Abstract:
Trust plays a crucial role in online commerce, collaboration and interactions in general. Reputation systems have emerged in recent years as a technology and tools for fostering trust in online interactions. These community tools help people make decisions on whom they can trust, encourage trustworthy behavior, and preclude dishonest and unskilled participants. Despite their successful use, today's reputation systems face many problems, one of which is the lack of portability. Since every existing reputation system is bound to a specific website, a user's reputation is locked in one community only, making the user unable to use that reputation outside the community. Portable reputation systems will solve this problem by making a user's reputation information accessible to any online entities s/he wishes to interact with. This thesis introduces the concepts of trust, online trust and reputation, introduces reputation systems, analyzes the importance of trust and reputation systems in online interactions, conducts a study on portability of online reputation, and proposes a model for reputation system which supports the feature of portability.

Abstract:
An overview of current spectrum management methods was carried out and it was decided that to be able to accommodate the predicted explosive growth in wireless data services changes would have to be made to avoid spectrum depletion becoming a very serious future problem. In addition, a review of numerous spectrum exploitation studies and measurement campaigns showed that nationally spectrum was being significantly underexploited. To address this apparent anomaly, it was decided that finding a means for improving spectrum exploitation nationally may provide a potential solution for the spectrum depletion problem. This is referred to as spectrum sharing, the focus for the DEng research. A new spectrum management model named Opportunistic Spectrum Management (OSM) is proposed on the basis that all spectrum licenses are awarded on a non-exclusive usage basis and spectrum use is based on a multi-level priority structure, because certain types of services require performance and spectrum availability guarantees. The proposed model retains backward compatibility with the traditional spectrum management model and its recent enhancements. To fully exploit the OSM model, the thesis proposes an automated spectrum management system name Opportunistic Spectrum Sharing System (OSSS) capable of dynamically allocating spectrum and enforcing spectrum usage priority rules both nationally and in real-time. OSSS overcomes limitations of traditional sensing based cognitive radio technology primarily its inability to distinguish between different spectrum usage classes and the hidden node problem. A key issue associated with computing acceptable power levels in an automated spectrum sharing system produced over-optimistic results. The thesis shows how this can be extended to improve its accuracy without compromising its closed form nature. Finally, the thesis concludes with a discussion of the implications and commercial benefits of opportunistic spectrum sharing from the perspectives of various wireless stakeholders, which is supported by extracts from the author’s various publications.

Abstract:
This study explores social and technical aspects of the provision and use of ATM (Automated Teller Machine) systems in Egypt. A pragmatic research approach using mixed methods with a range of stakeholders was employed. At an early stage of the investigation, Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) was used to develop conceptual models of the problem area; as it puts its primary emphasis on problem formulation rather than problem solution. A structured questionnaire was devised to survey a large number of ATM users and the data collected was analysed statistically. Semi-structured attributes allowed a more probing study of small numbers of decision makers in the Egyptian banks, and of ATM suppliers. The investigation was conducted mainly in Cairo and Alexandria. The banks sampled included Islamic and non-Islamic banks in both public and private sectors. From the data analysis, supported by a review of literature, revised conceptual models were generated. When results were brought together, differences between customers, on one hand, and bank managers in particular, on the other, were discovered. Through the study, the following main points were brought to light: • Whereas the key attributes of ATM seen by bank managers were safety, accurate information and ease of use, customers see the key attributes as availability and reliability. • The dominant stakeholders in determining the way ATMs are in fact used are the bank managers, who are not proactive in taking customer or even staff views into account. • ATM suppliers emerged as an additional stakeholder, who has an influential role regarding the use of ATMs in Egypt. In response to the findings, two new versions of the conceptual model were drawn, a reduced one reflecting the actual situation, and an expanded one that envisages a situation in which the views of the various main stakeholders are taken more fully into account. The reduced model emphasises the role of bank managers, recognises the role of ATM suppliers, and reduces the roles of both customers and bank staff. The expanded model retains the bank managers' perspective as dominant but adds activities that enable that perspective to be tempered by the views of customers and bank staff.

Abstract:
At a southeast United States high school career center, career and technology education (CTE) programs failed to meet the state career and college readiness benchmarks. Meeting these benchmarks is necessary for students who transition from high school to the workplace or a postsecondary education program. Bandura's social learning theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. The purpose of this bounded, qualitative case study was to explore students' perspectives of their career and college readiness or nonreadiness after completing a CTE program. Purposeful sampling was used to identify 10 participants who had completed a vocational technical center (VTC) CTE program. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews composed of open-ended questions. Interview data were analyzed thematically using open coding. Participants stated that CTE diversity and leadership training did not prepare them for a career or a college degree. They determined they would benefit from project-based learning, collaborative work groups, on-site work experiences, technology integration, creating and developing ideas and products, and interpersonal skills in CTE programs. Based on the findings of this study, a 9-week CTE curriculum was designed to increase career and college readiness outcomes grounded on the Secretary's Commission on Acquiring Necessary Skills (SCANS) framework. This endeavor may contribute to positive social change by assisting administrators and teachers in the decision-making process for CTE courses and programs; ultimately, improving career and college readiness for CTE program completers.

This study analyses the conditions under which socio-technical systems transition to more sustainable configurations. It does so through an exploration of the City of Cape Town’s electricity distribution arrangements. This investigation is situated within debates on sustainable socio-technical transitions in general and the multi-level perspective (MLP) in particular. This study considers four themes that are important for understanding the conditions under which socio-technical regimes change - regulation, organisations, geographical context and scale. These themes structure an empirical study of an energy transition in a city (scale) in the Global South (geographical context) and an examination of the role of regulatory and organisational conditions in shaping sustainable transitions. In turn, the implications of this case for transition theories is explored. The site of the study is a local government in an African city, Cape Town. This southern geography offers unique conditions, particularly related to the ways in which the technical interacts with the social, in conditions where poverty and inequality are prevalent. In exploring the City’s electricity system, field-work was undertaken using a participatory, engaged and grounded theory approach. Notably, research was conducted within a knowledge co-production setting that involved spending three years in the City, embedded in its Energy and Climate Change Unit. This provided invaluable access to the tacit knowledge of practitioners and a unique view into the internal workings of the City. The results of this field-work have implications for sustainable transition theory. In the City, systemic tensions and contestation were prominent in relation to the incumbent electricity system. Notably, it was found that reconfiguration agendas, represented in the City’s Energy and Climate Action Plan, are disrupting developmental values, such as cross-subsidisation, which underpin the incumbent electricity system. Accordingly, regime reconfiguration based on environmental values competes with developmental values embedded within incumbent regime structures. This provides the basis for conceptualising socio-technical transitions as conflicts related to contested values. These value tensions are repeated across scales, manifested by contestation between urban energy autonomy and security on the one hand and national developmental transitions on the other. The presence of systemic value tensions in the City also has a bearing on the conditions and pathways for socio-technical transitions. In this regard, this study applies a constructivist approach to exploring socio-technical reconfigurations through identifying two broad energy trajectories that the City is able to pursue; a centralised or distributed trajectory. This informs a heuristic to explore the socio-economic outcomes of reconfigurations. It further identifies potential reconfiguration processes present in the City that forms the basis of alternative theoretical reconfiguration typologies that are cognisant of value contestations. Through evaluating formal rules that regulate the City’s electricity system, this study finds that regulatory systems are used as a tool to assimilate, codify and stabilise dominant value sets into socio-technical regimes. Further, it was found that separate City departments are aligned to divergent socio-technical values. Thus, competing values create contestation within organisations in framing transition processes. Overall, the study offers an alternative conceptualisation of socio-technical regimes as systems produced and reproduced through value contestation. By drawing on the case of the City’s electricity system, the study provides evidence to show that value tensions related to socio-technical regimes are played out in regulatory, organisational and political landscapes. The study thus argues that these competing value systems are integral in the co-evolutionary process of regime configuration and reconfigurations.

Abstract:
Overreliance on energy from fossil fuels is unsustainable because of their regional depletion and associated environmental impacts. The British industrial sector accounts for around one fifth of final energy demand and one third of carbon emissions nationally. This thesis attempts to quantify the potential for industrial energy efficiency from the current baseline, by adopting thermodynamic and economic perspectives. The methodology involves a top-down analysis of energy trends within the manufacturing sector to determine the baseline against which changes are measured, leading to bottom-up case studies which explicitly consider the detailed mechanisms affecting energy demand. Top-down analysis highlights the diversity between industrial sectors, for which a sectoral classification based on process homogeneity is proposed. It also enables the long term, systemic potential for efficiency improvements to be estimated and identifies the barriers to uptake. Bottom-up case studies are better suited to identifying the sectoral potential in the short to medium term. Firstly, the technical potential for heat recovery from industrial sectors is quantified by recourse to thermodynamic quality and spatial considerations. Secondly, an energy and exergy analysis of a glass furnace enables a distinction between avoidable and unavoidable losses, leading to the identification of economic savings. Thirdly, a process integration study at a pulp and paper mill based on a pinch analysis and optimisation of a heat exchanger network highlights economic efficiency improvements. This thesis demonstrates that realising the full industrial energy efficiency potential requires improvements to public policy intended to overcome market-related barriers, especially the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and the Carbon Trust, with additional scope for a mandatory efficiency standard relating to motors. Energy efficiency has to part of a company’s overall strategy to be effective. Future work should focus on heterogeneous sectors and the broader effects on industrial energy efficiency of globalisation and the shift towards services.

In the United States, colleges and universities are under pressure from multiple sources to improve course completion and graduation rates and to reduce the cost of obtaining a degree. This qualitative phenomenological case study, underpinned by the social constructivist perspective, explored second-year manufacturing degree students’ perceptions of the impact of their teachers’ servant leadership behaviors on their successful course completions at a Midwest technical college. Servant leadership was the theoretical base for the study, which consisted of Q sorts by, and interviews with, students from two manufacturing degree programs. One program had higher course completion and graduation rates and the other had lower course completion and graduation rates. The responses were coded using data from an extensive literature review and were analyzed for themes according to the perspectives of the participants’ Q sorts and responses to interview questions. While the study did not reveal a simple, straightforward solution to the very complicated student success problem in technical college manufacturing programs, it did identify the elements of an emergent model recommended for manufacturing teachers: servant teaching.

This thesis accompanies the folio of the acoustic and electroacoustic compositions of the portfolio, which consists of a work for soli, choirs and orchestra, an orchestral piece, a solo for oboe, four ensemble chamber composition and a string quartet with sound projection and live electronics. The works exhibit a variety of cross-disciplinary approaches from theatrical, live electronics, networked performance, and narrative and multichannel/sound projection. The main concerns spanning the portfolio are the connections navigated through a 'synthesis' of multiple disciplines within the language of acoustic and electroacoustic music, and challenging areas of research that question and raise new musical possibilities. In all these works the morphological handling of music matter is always intertwined with issues of formal construction. For each composition I described applied studio techniques, sound sources, transformations and formal elements. As compositional tools, special software have been used, explored and developed in contrasting programming languages. These programs are briefly introduced, showing their links to compositional processes. The commentary presents supplementary information on each work, with a view to providing the reader with insights into the evolution of my compositional vocabulary. A particular attention has been devoted to the pre compositional and perceptual spatial aspects of my work, with reference to theoretical writings and research in the field.

Abstract:
Social interaction is key to students' learning in blending learning discussions. Although there is research on interactions in online courses and traditional classes, there is little on whether blended learning discussions are meeting students' social interaction and educational development needs. The purpose of this multicase study was to examine attitudes of first-year and final-year business and technology students and faculty members for patterns of interaction and knowledge construction. The study was conducted in the northeastern United States. Piaget's cognitive constructivism, Vygotsky's social constructivism, and Knowles's andragogy constituted the conceptual framework. Using maximum variation sampling, participants were 8 students and 4 faculty for 2 first-year and 2 final-year classes. Data sources were interviews and discussion responses coded using Straus and Corbin's open, axial, and selective coding procedures. Coded data were analyzed using Merriam's cross-case analysis method. The business students displayed the first three phases of knowledge construction: (a) sharing and comparing (b) discovery and exploration, and (c) negotiation of meaning; the technical students progressed to the fourth phase: testing and modification of proposed synthesis. Knowledge construction often occurred in a positive, challenging form of interaction. The professors expressed that gender, VoiceThread media, and discussion content influenced students' learning. These findings contribute to positive social change by informing stronger learning processes that students and teachers can use in their blended learning classes to facilitate collective knowledge construction.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze which potential users and requirements there are on a quality assurance tool to facilitate improving quality in technical documentation. The issues for this thesis to answer are to (1) define potential user groups and their requirements, (2) explore what ways introducing a quality assurance tool could facilitate quality in technical documentation, and (3) explore what challenges needs to be considered when integrating it into the workflow. The empirical research carried out at Saab Support & Services AB in Linköping in the form of semi-structured interviews constitutes the core case study evidence. Three personas are constructed on the basis of collected and analyzed data, corresponding for the potential user groups. For each persona, data requirements, as well as functional requirements, are generated through scenarios that are constructed to constitute for the possible contexts that the personas could find themselves in using this quality assurance tool. Further, this study explores some challenges that must be solved in order to satisfy the requirements of the potential users: to find a place in the workflow that suits the requirements from all perspectives. It shows important considerations to have in mind while integrating a quality assurance tool into the process of producing technical documentation, and opens up for questions of future studies within the integration of quality assurance tools into complex contexts.

Abstract:
Students' perspectives in jazz education have gone largely ignored. A modified analytic inductive design allowed me to look broadly at the students' jazz band experience while specifically investigating their views about playing individualized parts, improvising, and interpreting and articulating swing rhythms. A focus group procedure was altered (Krueger, 1995) and incorporated into my teaching of 19 students. Two 30 minute sessions per week over a 12 week period were video- and audiotaped. Audiotaped exit interviews provided data in a non-social environment. All data were transcribed and coded in order to identify major themes and trends. Conclusions were verified through member checks, several types of triangulation and other qualitative analysis techniques. Trustworthiness was determined through an audit. Cognitively and physically, students had to accommodate musical techniques as these differed from those used in concert band. Some students were confused by the new seating arrangement and the playing of individualized parts. While some students could perform distinctly different swing and straight interpretations of the same song without external cues, others could only perform this task with external cues. Some changes in articulation were well within the students' capabilities while other techniques were more difficult to accommodate. Several students felt 'uptight' while they improvised alone in front of their peers, noting group improvisation and rhythmic embellishment of familiar tunes as being helpful in assuaging these feelings. Students recognized the environmental differences between concert band and jazz band, and reported more freedom of expression in jazz band. Particularly enjoying this freedom, the more willing improvisors banded together as a clique. The students' learning was viewed as being situated in the context of jazz band. 'Musical perturbation' and cognitive apprenticeship described students' physical and cognitive accommodation of the new context. The instructional strategies students found to be most helpful were student-centered and derived from cognitive behavior modification and scaffolding theory.

Záměrem předložené disertační práce je porozumět tomu, jak investoři v konkrétním společenském kontextu vnímají význam kvality informačních systémů. Ze studia literatury zabývající se přístupy a rámci hodnocení kvality informačních systémů vyplývá, že tato kvalita je obecně hodnocena z hlediska striktního přístupu. V této práci je ukázáno, že kvalitu informačního systému lze smysluplně pochopit použitím interpretačního paradigmatu a že kvalita informačního systému je definována společensky a ovlivňována kontextem tohoto systému. Studie byla zahájena průzkumem dvaceti libyjských organizací. Podrobnější data byla získána z případové studie dvou vybraných libyjských organizací působících ve veřejném sektoru. Při empirické analýze nashromážděných dat bylo využito rámce mnohočetné perspektivy, který zahrnuje hlediska teorie strukturalizace, pojem mnohočetných perspektiv a metodologii měkkých systémů. V práci se dospělo ke zjištění, že: a) kvalita informačních systémů je pojata šíře, než je tomu u tradiční definice kvality, b) mnohočetné perspektivy kvality informačních systémů jsou ovlivněny opakovanou interakcí mezi investorem a institucionálními vlastnostmi kontextu informačního systému a že c) rozdílné hodnoty v kulturním prostředí a vnějším kontextu ovlivňují rozsah působnosti investora a interakce v kontextu informačního systému. Ze závěru práce vyplývá, že společenská skladba mnohočetných perspektiv kvality informačního systému je ovlivněna strukturalizačními procesy mezi investory a vlastnostmi v kontextu informačního systému.

Electronic payment systems (EPS) have received considerable attention from researchers and business owners worldwide, because of their potential to support economic development and growth. Despite the significant contribution of the growth in EPS to the ability to complete transactions via the Internet, Libya lags significantly behind developed countries in its adoption of EPS. This research focuses on factors affecting EPS adoption and use in Libya, explaining how they positively or negatively affect Libyan customers and organisations‟ willingness to adopt EPS. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders, including consumers, organisational staff (e.g. Telecommunications Companies, Banks, the Ministry of Telecommunication and Informatics, etc.), and strategic decision-makers (e.g. the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Director of Islamic Banking at Bank of Republic). The research implements Grounded Theory methods (GT), in particular the Straussian approach, to analyse, explore, and investigate the socio-organisational, technical, political, and economic factors affecting the adoption of EPS in Libya, and importantly the relationship between these factors. It discusses the impact of the factors identified, from both organisational and consumer perspectives, highlighting the factors and issues that need to be overcome to support successful adoption of EPS. The findings confirm that, for consumers and organisations alike, economic factors (e.g. perceived benefits, cooperation with existing entities, mutuality of stakeholders, Internet costs, standard of living, marketing businesses, awareness, withdrawal control, XX feasibility studies on EPS implementation, Islamic banking services and competition) are the core factors influencing the system‟s adoption. Furthermore, the findings revealed three new and significant factors of relevance to Libya, including standard of living, post coding and the unstable political situation in the country. These represent a unique contribution to the body of knowledge, illustrating the attitude of the Libyan people toward Internet usage, and current obstacles to EPS adoption. The use of substantive GT, in particular the Straussian approach, for data collection and data analysis in the field of EPS adoption, and the assessment of organisational and consumer attitudes, is unique to this research to the best of the researcher‟s knowledge. Thus, the research embodies a substantial contribution to the body of knowledge. The interpretive analysis of data using a Straussian approach has permitted the researcher to attain a deep understanding of the socio-organisational, economic, political, and technical factors affecting adoption of an E-payment system in Libya, as implemented by different stakeholders: Consumers, and Organisational. The benefits that the adoption of EPS in Libya will bring, include facilitation of online transactions, the availability of more secure websites, easier payment and access to the global markets. Furthermore, detailed recommendations are also being offered to assist decision-makers in the development and introduction of EPS in Libya, i.e. including the Communications and Informatics Ministry, which is hoped will advise internet service providers and companies to discount the cost of using the internet for limited bandwidths, in order to insure everyone access to the internet, and EPS.

En tant qu'acteur économique et politique sur la scène internationale, l’Union Européenne (UE) œuvre pour ses valeurs et ses intérêts à travers divers instruments. L'UE avec ses institutions est le deuxième plus grand bailleur de fonds en matière d’aide au développement aux pays tiers. Depuis 2000 dans un contexte des reformes pour le développement et l’aide, l’UE affirme son action extérieure, tout en augmentant son aide. En proposant une vision synthétique avec une approche interdisciplinaire et systémique, cette thèse dresse les évolutions et procède à un bilan de l’aide de l’UE à l’Ukraine pour la période 1991-2015. Dans cette optique, l’aide est examinée dans son ensemble, incluant l’aide au développement à >3.9Mrd € et l’aide économique à >8,47Mrd €. Le cadre politique (Politique européenne de voisinage) et contractuel pour la coopération UE-Ukraine définissent principalement les évolutions de l’aide. Dans une moindre mesure, les reformes du cadre pour le développement et l’efficacité de l’aide, ainsi que la politique économique de l’UE influencent ces évolutions, essentiellement en termes des modalités de l’aide. Cette analyse aide à la compréhension des perspectives de l’aide de l’UE à l’Ukraine en démontrant que celles-ci se présentent dans un recours accru aux financements innovants (mixage prêt-don) et sont indissociables de l’utilisation plus efficace des ressources budgétaires restreintes. As an economic and political actor on the international scene, the European Union (EU) promotes its values and interests through various instruments. The EU with its institutions is the second largest donor of development aid to third countries. Since 2000 in the context of development and aid reforms, the EU has been affirming its external action while increasing its aid.By proposing a synthetic vision with an interdisciplinary and systemic approach, this thesis draws up the evolutions of and reviews the EU aid to Ukraine for the period 1991-2015. In this perspective, the EU aid is examined as a whole, including development aid above € 3,9bn and economic aid above € 8,47bn. The political (European Neighborhood Policy) and contractual framework for the EU-Ukraine cooperation mainly define aid developments. To a lesser extent, the reforms of the framework for development and aid effectiveness, as well as the EU's economic policy influence these developments, essentially in terms of aid modalities.This analysis furthers the understanding of the prospects for the EU aid to Ukraine by demonstrating that these are part of an increased use of innovative financing (blending loan-grant) and are inseparable from more effective use of the limited budgetary resources. Beyond financing, the EU could strengthen cooperation with the EIB by increasing the ceiling of the External Lending Mandate and by easing the terms of sub-sovereign lending and improve donor coordination in Ukraine through an ad hoc mechanism

The focus of this research is safety critical systems management set within the context of a series of Lean brown field manufacturing case studies. The thesis is founded upon a human factors perspective of quality/safety management and the perceptions of over 800 workers drawn from 4 corporately owned aero repair & overhaul UK sites. Traditionally, human factors and aviation research has focused upon aircraft operations, where pilots and to a lesser extent air traffic controllers, have increased their ability to make safety critical decisions based on improved levels of team situational awareness. No literature exists to demonstrate the same potential from a front line operations perspective of aircraft maintenance engine overhaul, especially, within the context of Lean operations. The research hypothesis is problem driven and theory building using a cross-case comparative method involving both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Data was analysed using a non-parametric design and seeks to extract differences in quality attitudes. Results show the most significant barrier to quality and safety effectiveness, originates from management planning and workplace control. This is a condition that was found to be perpetuated by a lack of understanding for how to transition from traditional craft based engineering, towards a more lean approach within the context of Total Quality Management (TQM) literatures. The study shows corner cutting is a precondition of leadership and its front line engineering resource namely; self-managed teams. Results also demonstrate that people do not intentionally make mistakes, but generally do, because of operations system pace/instability of material flow. The researcher therefore concluded with a challenge to design new ways of neutralising latent error conditions before the safety critical events breach the quality systems defence mechanisms at each case study concerned.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) enables project participants to perform more efficiently and effectively. Recently, many studies have reported the rapid growth of application of the use of BIM system in global construction industry used by Architects, Engineers and Contractors and clients etc. Many users report benefits of using BIM including more accurate information, less re-work, reduced construction time, fewer claims and better project performance. Those reported benefits have stimulated more acceptances of BIM and rapid adoption worldwide in past five years. As adoption increases and BIM becomes more pervasive in the construction industry in Hong Kong, clients and forefront users of such technology begin to question the effectiveness of BIM implementation. Firms that have adopted BIM invest an extensive amount of money and time in training professionals, but they barely enjoy the real benefits from BIM adoption. Construction is a project-based activity, wherein different disciplines work collaboratively to achieve the project goal. Effective collaboration and coordination among all project participants is essential to achieve the full advantages of BIM. Thus encouraging different disciplines (architect, engineer, surveyor, contractor, etc.) to collaborate in BIM-enabled construction projects is critical for optimizing BIM adoption and improving project performances. A project team constitutes professionals from different organizations (e.g. architectural, engineering, and construction). It is important for the project participants to work closely together to share their information, coordinate working flows, jointly make decision, achieve inter-organizational collaboration, and deliver projects effectively and efficiently. This study aims to explore and investigate factors affecting multi-discipline collaboration in BIM-enabled construction teams in Hong Kong. Socio-technical Theory is employed as theoretical lens to construct a conceptual research framework. To further develop a validated research model, a two-stage research design is adopted including an exploratory study and an explanatory study. The exploratory study uses semi-structured interviews to confirm factors identified from existing literatures as well as to explore any new important factors from empirical context. The exploratory study validates the finalized research model by content analysis of qualitative data. In the explanatory study, a quantitative research method is adopted. A questionnaire survey is conducted and a total of 249 responses are collected for data analysis. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied to test the finalized research model and postulated hypotheses. The research findings and results confirm that common understanding, trust and joint decision-making significantly determine the collaborative team environment. Such collaborative team environment in turn influences inter-organizational BIM collaboration. Research results also reveal that collaboration experiences among project participants impose significant positive influence on interoperability. Research findings also confirm that continuous training is a critical support factor to BIM collaboration. BIM acceptance is found to be the most significant predictor to BIM collaboration. Moreover, BIM collaboration is proved to be important to project success and BIM success. Besides, research also finds that different professionals have significant differences in BIM collaboration. Professionals with more BIM experiences tend to act more collaboratively in the project. In addition, early involvement of project participants also imposes a positive impact on BIM collaboration. This study provides an integrated view on inter-organizational collaboration in BIM-enabled construction projects in Hong Kong, and addresses the social, technological and process factors associated with effective inter-organizational collaboration. A triangulated research method is employed. Some new measurement scales and factors are developed specifically for BIM-enabled construction projects. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the significant factors that affect the collaborative adoption of BIM in the construction industry in Hong Kong. Such findings are useful and valuable to practitioners to improve the effectiveness of BIM adoption in construction projects.

This dissertation is concerned with the strategic management of process innovations. It explores and describes in what way the technical process innovation capability is built and maintained by R&D and production departments at a world leading motor vehicle manufacturer. It is widely accepted that new or significantly improved production methods are a main driver of competitive advantage for innovative manufacturers and enable both effectiveness and efficiency gains. However, the strategic management of process innovations has been subjected to little research and remains not well understood. This research set out to develop a descriptive model—outlining the used activities, mechanisms and controls to undertake technical process innovation projects as well as the applied strategies, practices or tactics to institutionalise the knowledge and skills—which illustrates the strategic management of process innovations. An IDEF0 (Integration DEFinition language 0) function model was ’constructed’ from 15 examples of current or recent technical process innovations within the Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (BMW AG). This single-company multiple-case design utilised data sources such as semi-structured interviews, written documents and direct observations and made use of an inductive thematic (coding) analysis. Emerging from the evidence, this research reveals that cumulative learning through a closed-loop control and an appropriate interplay of co-ordination and learning mechanisms is essential for building and maintaining a technical process innovation capability. Furthermore, there is evidence to indicate that a formal system of reflection and contextspecific co-ordination mechanisms facilitate the incorporation of lessons learned and project related experiences into organisational process assets. The main outcome of this research has been the synthesis of elements contributing to the formation of a firm’s technical process innovation capability by means of a graphical concept map. However, due to the breadth of the investigated innovation stage-gate model which starts with a stimulus for innovation and proceeds through various stages of design and industrialisation to an innovation introduced into practice, some areas would benefit from further work. A possible direction to strengthen the empirical evidence is not only to replicate this research within and outside the automotive industry but also to focus on elements of the graphical concept map and to explain and understand their interaction in greater detail.

Abstract The quality of technical communication, for example the user guides created for various high-technology products, is often criticized. The information is not available when it would be needed, or it is not presented in a way suitable for our purposes. However, in the increasingly technology-based society of today, we are expected to operate a range of technical devices and software programs daily, at work and at home. The current re-structuring of the IT industry in Finland, on the other hand, has affected technical communication profoundly: cost pressures and outsourcing have led to narrow job descriptions, job losses and diminished wellbeing at work. Companies do not seem to appreciate the impact of high-quality technical communication on user experience. The work environments of technical communicators are also challenging: their background is typically in the Humanities, but they work with highly technical products. In many cases, they have learned the needed skills independently and in practice; very few experienced technical communicators have training in the field. In this study, some of the central contradictions in the technical communication activity are explored by applying activity theory on autoethnographic interview data. This study provides new information about technical communication as a profession, but the issues it raises are not limited to technical communication only: the restructuring of the IT sector is a phenomenon affecting a variety of fields. The aim of this dissertation is twofold: 1) to investigate and describe the current status of the field in Finland, and 2) to suggest solutions to some of the problems we are facing using the tools offered by activity theory

Tietoa ei ole tarjolla kun sitä tarvitaan, tai se esitetään tavalla joka ei vastaa toiveitamme. Nykypäivän tietoyhteiskunnassa pärjääminen kuitenkin vaatii tietoteknisiä perustaitoja niin kotona, koulussa kuin töissäkin. Suomessa tällä hetkellä käynnissä oleva IT-alan murros taas on vaikuttanut suuresti teknisen viestinnän ammattikuntaan: kustannuspaineet ja ulkoistukset ovat johtaneet työnkuvan kapenemiseen, työpaikkojen menetyksiin ja työviihtyvyyden vähenemiseen. Yrityksissä ei nähdä laadukkaan teknisen viestinnän merkitystä käyttäjäkokemukselle. Teknisten viestijöiden työolosuhteet ovat myös haastavat: he ovat usein humanistitaustaisia henkilöitä, jotka työskentelevät vaativien teknisten tuotteiden parissa. He ovat tyypillisesti opetelleet vaaditut tekniset taidot omatoimisesti työn ohessa, ja hyvin harvalla pidempään alalla olleella on teknisen viestinnän koulutusta tukenaan. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan teknisen viestinnän keskeisiä ristiriitoja tulkitsemalla autoetnografista haastatteluaineistoa toiminnan teorian kautta. This study provides some positive and constructive proposal to make up the service gap ,and provides preliminary results supported by SERVQUAL model to measure the mutual interactions between service quality and customer satisfaction. Service quality and customer satisfaction have been studied by the help of quality dimensions and some suggestions are offered for improving service quality. Methods: The primary data have been collected through interviews and questionnaires. The secondary data has been collected through literature review. Case study approach is used to identify the current relationship between service quality and consumer satisfaction. Result and Conclusions: We used five service quality dimensions to measure service quality and customer satisfaction. After survey is conducted, it has been clear that there are two dimensions (Empathy and Responsiveness) made a significant service gap between our target company and the key customer groups. Information and the related assets form critical business assets for most organizations. Organizations depend on their information assets to survive and to remain competitive. However, the organization’s information assets are faced with a number of internal and external threats, aimed at compromising the confidentiality, integrity and/or availability (CIA) of information assets. These threats can be of physical, technical, or operational nature. For an organization to successfully conduct its business operations, information assets should always be protected from these threats. The process of protecting information and its related assets, ensuring the CIA thereof, is referred to as information security. To be effective, information security should be viewed as critical to the overall success of the organization, and therefore be included as one of the organization’s Corporate Governance sub-functions, referred to as Information Security Governance. Information Security Governance is the strategic system for directing and controlling the organization’s information security initiatives. Directing is the process whereby management issues directives, giving a strategic direction for information security within an organization. Controlling is the process of ensuring that management directives are being adhered to within an organization. To be effective, Information Security Governance directing and controlling depend on the organization’s Information Security Policy Architecture. An Information Security Policy Architecture is a hierarchical representation of the various information security policies and related documentation that an organization has used. When directing, management directives should be issued in the form of an Information Security Policy Architecture, and controlling should ensure adherence to the Information Security Policy Architecture. However, this study noted that in both literature and organizational practices, Information Security Policy Architectures are not comprehensively addressed and adequately managed. Therefore, this study argues towards a more comprehensive Information Security Policy Architecture, and the proper management thereof.

Through a socio-technical perspective, this research traces the interactions between knowledge sharing practices and the organisational context. The conditions surrounding the organisation of knowledge sharing as an organisational practice are addressed in the case presented in the dissertation. In particular, the research has closely examined knowledge management initiatives during the period of 1992-1998 implemented by Buckman Laboratories, focusing on the issues of organising knowledge sharing processes. The research traces Buckman Laboratories' experience as a networked, global company organised as a set of linked knowledge-focused communities of practice. Based on the findings of a case study of one unique knowledge-intensive organisation, the research presents a model of organising knowledge sharing. It develops a sociotechnical perspective to grounded field data and suggests that the experience of this organisation can be considered as a particular form of knowledge management - one that utilises various mechanisms for leveraging knowledge sharing towards sustainable competitive advantage. The study concludes that enabling, integrating and co-ordinating mechanisms play a critical role in establishing the multi-level context for the effective assimilation of knowledge sharing practice.

As online environments become more cost effective, allow for more personalisation and often offer faster solutions, numerous service providers have shifted priority to the development of online user interactions. Many perceive this trend as positive, and welcome services that can be accessed online, anywhere, anytime. However, not all members of society favour the shift to online services, and resistance to technology and online services have been documented among ageing individuals. In order to design user interactions for ageing users more effectively, it is imperative to understand the normative changes that impact ageing users’ interactions with online services. The exploration of user perception and experience links to both physical and emotional involvement - documenting reactions such as frustration, fear, joy and excitement in relation to online services. The study focuses on the exploration of perceived interaction barriers among South African ageing users, as well as those interactions already perceived as appealing, contributing to new theoretical insights and a description of the sociotechnical context investigated in this study. The study is completed using a constructivist grounded theory method, with qualitative methods focused on user participation and co-design. In addition to the emerging substantive theory of Ageing User Decision-Determined Engagement (AUDDE), the study adds value to online service design practice by developing a deeper understanding of user perceptions and experiences, within a socio-technical context. Findings from the participatory research sessions informed a set of practical service design interaction guidelines, which can inform the design of more engaging online services for the ageing community. Methodologically the study explores the grounded theory method, within a design research framework, and establishes it as a suitable methodology to generate theory through design practice

In this study, Interpretivist epistemology and abductive research strategy were used to examine transcripts of sixteen two-hour focused interviews. The research sample was a group of technical experts who assumed managerial responsibilities within their organisations (transitional managers). The subjectively perceived experiences of the transition were examined as well as the respondents' intersubjective interpretations of the transition from the organisational perspective. The aim was to explore the perceived characteristics of the transitional experience. The main findings of this study could be summarised as follows: firstly, it was found that there were three main types of transitional managers: the unwilling, the pragmatic and the eager managers. Secondly, the key motivations to take the manager role for all three categories were higher remuneration, technical peer respect and the respondent's new role as an organisational decision-maker. The third finding of this study was that there were two types of transitions, the complete transition which the majority of the eager managers went through and the technical transition which was experienced by the unwilling and the pragmatic managers. Related to that finding was the link between the type of organisation, its culture and the leadership skills required in that organisation. The fourth finding was that, irrespective of the amount of time in the manager role (six months to eleven years) or the type of transition (complete or technical), all respondents in this study continued to identify themselves as technical experts with the respondents who underwent a complete transition also seeing themselves as managers. Related to this finding was the respondents' continued identification as technical experts being largely due to their need to identify with their peers (other technical experts). The fifth major finding of this study related to a lack of career planning by the respondents and little or no succession and management development planning by the respondents' organisations. In a contribution to the theory of leadership studies, this study examined leadership as a social process, building on the existing leadership concepts and theories and putting them in a social context of subjective efforts by the researcher to interpret the respondents' transitional experiences through typification of the leadership characteristics into seven themes. The need to apply an individual contextualisation was seen as essential to understanding the transitional managers' response to their own transition. In doing so, the study has contributed towards narrowing the existing empirical literature gap on the transition processes. The contributions of this study need to be seen in the context that explorative research such as the one carried out here is not considered generalisable, as its aim was to explore and describe particular phenomena. Radiotherapy (RT) is the most common treatment for cancer. The state-of- the-art modality for RT is the linear accelerator. However, the availability for linear accelerators in the developing world is limited due to costs, infrastructure and need for educated personnel. The development in telecommunica- tions can help to increase the availability by connecting radiation RT-centers and have a central treatment planning unit. Scandinavian Care is a com- pany that builds RT-centers in developing countries and has a project in India where three centers should to be connected. The thesis objectives were to evaluate technical conditions and discuss or- ganizational aspects for remote treatment planning applied on Scandinavian Care’s project in India. The technical conditions were evaluated with two models derived from Swedish case studies. The models were analyzed using a SWOT-model. The organizational aspects were divided into the organiza- tion of medical physicists and three importtant communication channels. The thesis concludes that the technical conditions are possible for the project in India. The best model depends on the frequency of disturbances in the WAN-connection and patient throughput sensitivity. The organization of medical physicists suggests a rotation schedule to promote education, infor- mal communication and variation of tasks. Telemedical conferences and use of software possibilities could ease the feedback.
Strålbehandling är den vanligaste behandlingsmetoden för cancer. Den bästa enheten för strålbehandling är en linjäraccelerator. Däremot är tillgängligheten av linjäracceleratorer i utvecklingsländer begränsad på grund av kostnader, krav på infrastruktur och utbildad personal. Utvecklingen inom telekommunikationer gör det möjligt att öka tillgängligheten genom att koppla ihop strålbehandlingsklinker och exempelvis centralisera dosplaneringen. Scandinavian Care är ett företag som bygger strålbehandlingskliniker i utvecklingsländer och har ett projekt i Indien där tre kliniker är tänkt att sammankopplas. Målet med uppsatsen var att utvärdera tekniska förutsättningar och diskutera organisatoriska aspekter för dosplanering på distans, applicerad på Scandinavian Cares Indienprojekt. De tekniska förutsättningarna utvärderades genom två modeller härledda från svenska fallstudier. Modellerna analyserades med hjälp av en SWOT-analys. De organisatoriska aspekterna delades in i organisationen kring strålfysiker och tre viktiga kommunikationskanaler. Uppsatsen kommer fram till att de tekniska förutsättningarna är genomförbara för Indienprojektet. Den bästa implementeringen beror på hur störningsfrekvensen i WAN- anslutningen påverkar patientflödet. För organisationen av strålfysiker föreslås ett rotationsschema för att främja utbildning, informell kommunikation och variation i arbetet. För att underlätta återkoppling föreslås att utnyttja möjligheterna i mjukvaran och telemedicinska konferenser.

This thesis argues that the current EU approach toward regulating unilateral conduct by dominant firms is not firmly anchored to a unified economic theory; thus without a strong emphasis on the welfare of the consumers and the ability to determine whether a particular conduct by a dominant firm is in fact harmful or whether it offered efficiencies for consumers. Nor does it provide adequate flexibility to be applied to certain practices such as technical integration in the software industry, which differs considerably from traditional markets and has unique features that necessitate special consideration. This approach can negatively impact firms’ incentives and the capability to innovate, and it brings new problems for firms operating in such markets by not providing them with legal certainty to check whether their technical integration products infringe competition law. In addition, the current approach can lead to a condemnation of procompetitive practice in such markets, which are more prone to enforcement errors. There is a strong likelihood that such a perspective will remain entrenched as long as the traditional metrics in competition law, such as price and output, are taken as the essential methods for assessing the competition process in fast-moving innovation markets. Therefore, this thesis argues in favour of the adoption of a consistent framework for assessing an exclusionary tying claim and where the primary objective of the competition rules is consumer welfare, with access to modern microeconomic insights and economic tools.

Since the third-generation’s mobile telephony was introduced, the use of the Internet changed significantly. Websites can nowadays be viewed from a wide range of devices that differ in type and size. This puts a demand on the design of web pages because the page should be equally useful regardless of the type of device used to view the page. Responsive web design is a design method that strives towards solving this problem by allowing web pages to customize their visual representation based on the medium used to interact with them. Although it is a well-used tool in web development, it is relatively unexplored from a technical, aesthetic and functional perspective. The goal of this thesis is to improve the situation by exploring the possibilities and limitations of responsive web design in relation to the above perspectives. To achieve this, common definitions of this approach were collected, together with an implementation of a responsive product. To give structure to the analysis, the development process followed the Double Diamond approach together with two experiential qualities, fluidity and naturality. By using media queries together with scalable units in the implementation, a fully responsive portfolio website was created. The creation of the product gave room for understanding possibilities and limitations of responsive web design. The encountered problems in this thesis, such as detecting different types of devices, concludes that responsive web design is yet not a fully developed approach and contains problems that limit the implementation.

The high rate of youth unemployment is a global phenomenon and a worrying factor. This contradicted the opportunity presented by the ICT sector, which requires e-skills, particularly e-literacy/or digital literacy skills in the entire sectors of the economy, not only ICT. Ala-Mutka (2011) defines e-literacy skills as the "basic technical use of computers and the internet". ICT skills are viewed as essential in the modern day world in order to improve individual’s chances of securing and keeping employment. Various initiatives to improve youth employability in South Africa, particularly those that are studying TVET colleges or those have already graduated. Various approaches have been adopted such envisaged by the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training of 2013 i.e. preparation for workplace, self-employment through close cooperation of TVET colleges and industry (DHET, 2013). Employers assume that graduates are familiar with computer and Internet usage. Thus, the study set the following objectives: • To understand the theoretical and contextual background of promoting employability; • To explore existing employability frameworks that might be relevant for promoting employability; • To identify and categorize the factors that are relevant for promoting employability obtained from pertinent literature; • To validate these factors by interviewing key TVET stakeholders and ICT experts; • To propose an employability framework customized for the South African context; and • To explain the use of these factors within the proposed employability framework. The objectives were realised by reviewing pertinent literature, which led to the development of an employability conceptual research framework for South Africa. A conceptual research framework that consists of five factors from the e-skills national curriculum competency framework: (i) e-skills for service delivery; (ii) e-skills for new jobs; (iii) e-skills for existing jobs; (iv) self-employment; and (v) ICT practitioner skills. In-terms of e-skills levels i.e. ICT user skills, e-business skills and ICT practitioner skills. The first three sets of e-skills are associated with ICT user skill, e-skills for self-employment are associated with e-business skills and then ICT practitioner skills. This conceptual research framework was subsequently empirically verified using an interpretive approach by interviewing key TVET stakeholders and an ICT expert. The empirical findings affirmed the validity of the above-mentioned employability factors but also uncovered two additional factors: (iv) practical experience and infrastructure. These factors were subsequently incorporated into the final employability framework for South Africa. The main contribution of this study is the fact that it brings a new employability framework for TVET colleges for the South African context, with the hope that it can be applicable in similar environments in the developing context. There are some limitations in the present study due to a small research sample that was caused by the unavailability of employed graduates. However, it is believed that this limitation did not deem the results and the academic and practical contribution of the study invalid.

Today the ISO 14001 system is used within a rather wide spectrum of firms and industries, even if the early adopters of the standard mainly where organizations in the heavy industry and manufacturing sectors (Peglaue and Baxter, 2007). Many of those early adopters have now been certified for over 10 years, and during the years several surveys and case studies have been conducted to pinpoint the motives, benefits and challenges for why organizations chose to implement and maintain the system (Massoud, 2010; Jiang and Bansal, 2003). However, one issue with research about ISO 14001 up until now is that most studies have focused upon a managerial perspective where the managers´ attitudes have been in focus rather than the employees (Boiral, 2007). Therefore, this case study set out to explore how the employees, the production operators, inside one certified organization are involved in ISO 14001 through a Grounded Theory approach. The results of the study showed that the production operators relied upon different strategies in order to legitimize their involvement in ISO 14001. Further on, the study shows that the production operators where involved in ISO 14001 at a level which was required in order to keep the certification. However, they could not obtain enough legitimacy to motivate an involvement in ISO 14001 which extended what was required in order to keep the certification. Grounded in the discovery of the different strategies used by the employees, this study argues that environmental awareness could be seen as an internal barrier and as a source for unsatisfied employees. Something which risks emphasizes a feeling of being involved in a rational myth (Boiral, 2007).
