Abstract:
Abstract The present article highlights important aspects that need to be considered in the design of the academic linguistic training oriented to develop students’ technical documentation-related writing skills viewed as critical career-boosting skills that influence and condition employees’ promotion and graduates’ hiring chances. Technical documentation is an umbrella term covering different types of technical documents (e.g. technical reports, manufacturing standards, installation guides, quick references cards, troubleshooting guides, release notes, etc.) which, irrespective of usage or function, observe general characteristics and share essential features whose effective recognition and knowledgeability facilitate students’ upward career trajectory. The topic is discussed from the perspective of two teaching priorities - awareness of stylistic features characteristic of technical documentation and awareness of performance standards in terms of technical documentation production - within the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and BELF (English as Business Lingua Franca) frameworks that prioritize the performative and lingua franca dimensions of the English language use in the currently-emerging globalized workplaces.

The problem is useful in graph mining because dense subgraphs often represent patterns deserving special attention. They could indicate, for example, an authoritative community in a social network, a building brick of more complex biology structures, or even a type of malicious behavior such as spamming. Watt, Calum. "The Uses of Maurice Blanchot in Bernard Stiegler's Technics and Time." Paragraph 39, no. 3 (November 2016): 305–18. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/para.2016.0203.

Full text
Abstract:
This article argues that Maurice Blanchot is a significant presence in Bernard Stiegler's Technics and Time series. The article first sets out Stiegler's invocation of the Blanchotian ‘change of epoch’ in the first volume, which attempts to situate Blanchot within the horizon of technics. I argue Blanchot's disaster is a hidden element in Stiegler's play on the motifs of the star and catastrophe. The article then traces how these motifs emerge in the second and third volumes, in which the technical forms of photography and cinema become more important and where the motifs are woven together through reference to works by Roland Barthes, D. W. Winnicott and Federico Fellini. Stiegler filters these references to apparently disparate figures through Blanchot's analyses of writing and temporality. Tracing both overt and unacknowledged references to Blanchot in Stiegler's text, I conclude that Stiegler's use of Blanchot destabilizes his conceptions of time and epochality.

Full text
Abstract:
The intertwining of lipid nutrition with many other disciplines makes contributions from different directions imperative. Chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, food science and technology, industrial processing, and consumer acceptance provide concepts and terms used in lipid nutrition. This document is the product of a working group comprising members of the Committee on the Biological Role of Fatty Acids in Human Nutrition of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences and of the Commission on Oils, Fats, and Derivatives of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Shorthand formulas and systematic and trivial names of some biologically important fatty acids are given in Table 1 (saturated fatty acids), Table 2 (monoenoic fatty acids), and Table 3 (polyenoic fatty acids).Fatty acid compositions of foods have been based on the data of the USDA reference that means official grade standards for agriculture of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Because foods may show large variations in their composition the figures in the annexed tables serve as guidelines only, except those of the Codex alimentarius (Tables 4 and 5), where accepted ranges of the figures are reported. Further, as these standards are in constant revision the reader may contact directly the USDA Agriculture Marketing Service for the last editions of these standards. It is evident that the explanation of the referred terms is a compromise between technological and scientific correctness and the readers' lack of interest in many of the details. But, sometimes a more exhaustive explanation is necessary. Further information then may be found in cross references, although they have been reduced to those of utmost necessity. Terms in the text where cross references are available are printed in boldfaced type. As research and science are progressing and knowledge is increasing, consequently, views on certain nutritional aspects are constantly changing, e.g., the role of essential fatty acids in human nutrition. Therefore, such a work will never be complete, and readers are invited to send their comments and observations to the authors for incorporation into a next edition.

Abstract:
The text contributes to the discussion about the ontological status of the "image" by offering an analysis of the technical and material conditions of image-making. Departing from a close reading of French artist Julien Maire's installation "Memory Cone" (2009), the paper discusses four distinct types of technical conditions which determine mediated images: physiological, physical, electronic, and algorithmic. It references art historical examples to argue that such technical conditions have always been fundamental to images, and suggests the interdependency between these medial layers.

Abstract:
The “ technical references” are documents that can be used in different phases of the a building project, with no legal effect as standards or Codes, developed by the agents of the industry, to establish and disseminate best practices for planning, design, execution, use, maintenance and post-use phases, with the aim of to achieve quality and performance of the final product and to consolidate and to broadcast knowledge. Such documents exist in different countries, as the “model codes” or “ codes of practices” and the “ best practice guides” , but this is not the case in Brazil, even though we can find some initiatives in this way. Consequently, the objective of this research is to analyse, discuss and propose technical, methodological and institutional orientations to the implementation of technical referencesfor the building construction sector in Brazil. For this purpose, there is a review of documents such as procurement texts and technical manuals, an analysis of their structures and contents and a deeperexamination of the application of the document used in social housing projects in Sao Paulo. Some foreign documents are also analysed, as well as the technical documents model used in France ('RFXPHQWV_ 7HFKQLTXHV_ 8QLILpV_ __ '78), discussing its adaptation to fit Brazilian reality. The conclusion of this work lies in the analysis, amongst other factors, of the concept of technical reference documents, its context and interfaces, bringing orientation concerning their structure and content, and presenting difficulties and opportunities of developing and using them, as well as showing the need of additional actions, including those of institutional nature, that contribute to their practical and effective use.

Meto, Salah Masoud A.-S. "Issues in the Introduction of New Technical Vocabulary in Arabic, With Special Reference to Libya." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.392078.

Abstract:
The issue of lexical modernisation in Arabic, particularly in the area of science and technology, has been raised for a long time with concentration mainly on the methods of lexical expansion adopted by language planning agencies (language academies and other language planning organisations) or individuals concerned in this process such as dictionary compilers and translators. The problem of lexical modernisation does not lie solely in finding ways of word creation and inventing lists and glossaries of new words. More important is whether these words are being adopted and used by the language community or not, and if not, why and what are the possible reasons behind accepting or rejecting certain terms. This study is an attempt to answer these questions making use of the vocabulary produced and/or co-ordinated by Arabic language planning agencies or individuals, a list of which is included in the bibliography. The study is divided into seven chapters commencing with a discussion of some major aspects of language planning in general and Arabic language planning in particular. In attempting to answer the above questions, it is believed that there are two kinds of factors that might affect the acceptability of newly introduced vocabulary: (1) linguistic factors, which include the features of the term itself i.e. word length, ease of pronunciation, transparency, and the factor of diglossia, and (2) extralinguistic factors, those to do with the planners such as lack of authority and financial resources to distribute, or the speakers including lack of motivation, illiteracy or other factors such as contact with foreign languages with considerable prestige. The researcher relied mainly on some questionnaires conducted in the University of Tripoli in Libya, and among specialised groups of speakers, in addition to consulting speakers with intensive contact with technical vocabulary. For the problem of terminology disunification, a survey of some lexicons and glossaries was conducted.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Industrial Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2009
Demand Side Management (DSM) within a South African context requires a transdisciplinary approach to comprehend electricity consumption. Current research suggests a technical determinism, whereby design teams fail to acknowledged social factors and cultural influences when conceptualising DSM artefacts. The result of which, is that artefacts fail to be adopted by the market, and consumer behaviour and electricity consumption remains unchanged. The thesis aims to demonstrate the hypothesis, that semiotics and ethnology may affect sustainable residential electricity management in South Africa. The ubiquitous literature on electricity management is administered by means of the theoretical lens, Sociotechnical Theory. Mixed method instrument obtain fieldwork data from three of the eleven official South African languages: Afrikaans, English and IsiXhosa.

Abstract:
Abstract Dimensioning and tolerancing (D&T) are inter-related tasks; the validity of the tolerance representation model is dependent on the dimension model. Geometric tolerances are used to refine dimension tolerances and control some aspects of form, orientation and position of part features. This paper presents a computable model for the representation of dimensions and tolerances, compatible with D&T practice. The model is implemented as a dimension and tolerance graph (DTG). Constrained entities are combined into progressively expanding clusters which can be used to represent datum references/ frames, features, patterns, or the entire part. Validation of all D&T relations is performed in a uniform way using the concept of degrees of freedom and Control Frames. The tolerance specification method proposed here supports all tolerance classes defined in the ANSI standard, as well as datum reference frames and special pattern clusters.

"Application of the Transient Heat Transfer Measurement Technique Using TLC in a Network Configuration With Intersecting Circular Passages." In ASME Turbo Expo 2018: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2018-76551.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study deals with the application of the transient thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) technique in a flow network of intersecting circular passages as a potential internal turbine component cooling geometry. The investigated network consists of six circular passages with a diameter d = 20mm that intersect coplanar at an angle θ = 40°, the innermost in three, the outermost in one intersection level. Two additional non-intersecting passages serve as references. Such a flow network entails specific characteristics associated with the transient TLC method that have to be accounted for in the evaluation process: the strongly curved surfaces, the mixing and mass flow redistribution at each intersection point, and the resulting gradients between the wall and passage centerline temperatures. All this impedes the choice of a representative fluid reference temperature, which results in deviations using established evaluation methods. An alternative evaluation approach is introduced, which is supported by computational results obtained from steady-state three-dimensional RANS simulations using the SST turbulence model. The presented analysis uncouples local heat transfer coefficients from actually measured local temperatures but uses the time information of the thermocouples instead that represents the fluid temperature step change and evolution along the passages. This experimental time information is transferred to the steady-state numerical bulk temperatures, which are finally used as local references to evaluate the transient TLC experiments. As effective local mass flow rates in the passage sections are considered, the approach eventually allows for a conclusion whether heat transfer is locally enhanced due to higher mass flow rates or the intersection effects.

Abstract:
There are 32 oil companies in Indonesia that will perform development drilling in 2020 with total number of development drilling plans are 395 comparison, there were 289 development wells in 2018 and 322 development wells in 2019 respectively were drilled and contributed to national oil and gas production. All development drilling activities are reported to Satuan Kerja Khusus Pelaksana Kegiatan Usaha Hulu Minyak dan Gas Bumi (SKK Migas) by the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) contractors in the form of spreadsheets. SKK Migas will then evaluate the development drilling performance to be used as references and for consideration in the drilling program approvals for the following year in the Work Program & Budget event. The evaluation includes important drilling parameters. During the last 3 years, SKK Migas has managed to collect data and actual report programs from all PSC’s. Based on that data, an evaluate was exercised and will be used as reference for the next development drilling program for the same PSC or other PSCs which has the similar subsurface challenges or operates in the same areas. This will therefore make a good engineering future plan and will achieve the efficiency of the drilling cost, and can be challenged to be more efficient and effective. For the future, these drilling parameter data will become as benchmark such as a cost/ft or cost/day per PSC per well which is already drilled in Indonesia. There will be more data for PSC’s when making a Plan of Development (POD) proposal from some areas which will be developed into a prospective targets for producing oil and gas, and will also enable SKK Migas to get effective calculations for the related economic issues. This paper will illustrate how SKK Migas manages development drilling program activities in Indonesia using spreadsheets. This paper also illustrates how historical data of actual performance is compared, evaluated and analyzed for future reference.
