Abstract:
Abstract   This study analyses the translation of a technical guidebook in the subject field of hydropower generation. The aim is to identify and apply functional translation theories when translating general technical terms, industry terms and contract terms. The theoretical basis for the study consists of Eugene Nida’s and Vinay & Darbelnet’s models for translation as well as theories on terminology by Rune Ingo and Therésa Cabré. During the translation process, technical terms were identified and subsequently translated using one or more of the theories described. The result was then analysed and discussed. Although the study is not comprehensive enough to draw significant conclusions, the result indicates that in order to render the best possible translation of technical terms, a combination of theories and methods are best applied; direct translation regarding systematized terminology similar to general technical terms and oblique translation, or dynamic equivalence, regarding industry terms and contract terms. The results further suggest that structural analysis is of great value in order to determine the correct level of the term. In addition, the translator’s experience and knowledge of the subject field as well as readiness to consult parallel texts seem to be vital to the outcome of the translation.

Ersova, Alexandra. "Translation of technical and promotional materials for GMR ENLIGHTS S.r.l." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021.

Find full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a translation project carried out within the framework of the Language Toolkit program, which is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Interpretation and Translation and the Chamber of Commerce of Romagna. For this translation project, technical and promotional materials were translated from Italian into Russian for GMR ENLIGHTS S.r.l., a local company that specializes in lighting technology. Materials that were assigned for this translation project combine technical and promotional writing, which is a common feature of business-to-business promotional texts. The first chapter explores the main characteristics of texts belonging to this category and analyzes the tools and skills that a translator needs to perform promotional and technical translation. More information about the Language Toolkit program and GMR ENLIGHTS S.r.l. can be found in the second chapter. Here the work of the program is analyzed in the context of economic development and internationalization of the region of Emilia-Romagna. This is followed by a brief history of the company's development and a description of the task assigned by the company. The third chapter describes the tools that were chosen for this translation project and the resources that were used in order to acquire the relevant terminology. The fourth chapter provides a detailed analysis of all the source texts. Given the promotional nature of the texts, it was decided to adopt the functional approach to translation and analyze the texts along Nord's (2005) model of translation-oriented text analysis, which revolves greatly around the analysis of the prospective target reader. The most interesting and recurrent translation problems that were encountered in this project, and strategies adopted to solve them are described in the fifth and final chapter.

Abdullah, Sharmini. "Translating specialized metaphors in technical discourse : an analysis of 'Foundations of Engineering' and its Malay translation 'Asas Kejuruteraan'." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/62660.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral study explores whether engineering metaphors are used in the translation of an engineering text from English to Malay and examines how the usage of metaphors in the target text (TT) compares to that in the source text (ST). The study focuses on Holtzapple and Reese’s “Foundations of Engineering” and its Malay version “Asas Kejuruteraan” translated by Juneta Zawawi. The “Metaphor Identification Procedure” (MIP) by the Pragglejaz Group is applied in the process of gathering examples while the Cognitive Metaphor Theory is used for the purposes of metaphor analysis. A combination of Newmark’s (1988), Deignan’s (2005) and Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) classifications of metaphor are used to categorize the SL and TL metaphorical expressions. Metaphor translation procedures identified were benchmarked to those proposed by Newmark (1988). Analysis of the 174 ST and 82 TT engineering metaphors reveals that the use of metaphorical language does indeed characterize the English technical text and its translation into Malay. Identifying equivalence in the TL discloses somewhat similar problems to those that are present in literary metaphor translation. The ease of translation and the identification of suitable engineering metaphors are not determined solely by the type of metaphor but rather are also partially dependent on cultural and linguistic factors. Metaphor translation procedures as outlined by Newmark are found to be unable to account for all the examples, which results in the creation of the two variants of one of his translation procedures, the proposal of three new ones that are identified and the abandonment of two of his procedures. The selection of translation procedure appears to be dependent not only on the metaphor type but also on whether the translator simply decides to use equivalent SL metaphors or non-metaphorical expressions in the TL. It is also highly likely that the type of text being translated plays a role.

Hildebrand, Kristina. "Bridging Technical Spaces: Model Translation from TA to XMI and Back Again." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2927.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many different techniques and notations for extracting architecturally interesting information from the source code of existing software systems. This process is known as reverse engineering. One current problem with reverse engineering techniques is that models of software systems cannot easily be transferred from one notation and storage format to another. We refer to this as the problem of bridging technical spaces.

In this work, we approach the issue of bridging between the SWAG technical space and the UML technical space. The SWAG technical space, named after the Software Architecture Group at the University of Waterloo, consists of fact extractors, fact manipulators, schemas, and a fact storage language - the Tuple-Attribute language (TA). The UML technical space consists of the UML metamodel, the XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) format for encoding UML models, and various UML modeling tools. We have designed and implemented a plugin for MagicDraw UML, which will import, export, and merge between XMI-encoded UML models and TA-encoded Function-Level Schema models.

We document evidence of what is referred to as a Bridge Domain - a technical space which exists between two encodable spaces. The metamodels of the two notation languages that we have focused on are very rich and flexible, but neither technical space is capable of fully expressing an accurate architectural model of any given software system; however, each technical space is capable of maintaining certain semantic information relevant to that technical space through multiple merge operations.

The major purpose of this thesis is to suggest a semantic categorization of English technical noun compounds, as well as to analyze the semantics and syntax of the Portuguese renderings. First, the literature on semantic relations in English compound nouns is reviewed. The classification here suggested is therefore based on classic studies on the semantics of compound nouns (Levi, 1978; Warren, 1978) and on more recent research within the scope of Computational Linguistics, which are influenced by the Generative Lexicon Theory (Pustejovsky, 1995). The semantic categorization is also adapted to the data collected in this work. This thesis also analyzes the Portuguese translation of the English compound nouns, as well as the role of the prepositions in prepositional phrases. The data was taken from an electrical/electronics engineering book which was translated by the author. In addition to the semantic classification, the technical compound nouns are grouped together according to the head or modifiers of the structure, and assembled into ontologies. Compound nouns sharing a common head or modifier are grouped together, so as to investigate if there is a hypernym-hyponym relation among the compounds assembled in the same ontology.

Krein-Kuhle, M. "Equivalence in scientific and technical translation : a text-in-context-based study." Thesis, University of Salford, 2003. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14846/.

Full text
Abstract:
Scientific and technical translation has always played a pivotal role in disseminating knowledge. Today, the domain of science and technology is the main area of translation work. Nevertheless, there is still a discrepancy between the growing need for high-quality technical translations and the short supply of competent technical translators to produce them, a situation which may be due in part to the recent neglect of the equivalence concept in the theoretical/descriptive and applied branches of translation studies (TS). This thesis sets out to redefine, reassess, and reinstate equivalence as a useflul concept in TS by adopting an approach based on the English-German language pair and on one specific text genre and type. The investigation of equivalence as a qualitative complete-text-in-context-based concept is embedded in an equivalence-relevant methodology based on two methodological pillars, the first being a theoretically sound translation comparison and the second a highly refined translation corpus. Within this methodological framework, equivalence-relevant features are investigated and described at the syntactic, lexical-semantic, terminological-phraseological and overall textual levels. These levels are hierarchically interrelated in descending and ascending order and may be conditioned by pragmatic aspects, viz., domain knowledge and register considerations. The comparison is made using a high-quality corpus selected on the basis of a threefold set of selection criteria, with a special emphasis on the qualitative criteria. This helps us generate well-underpinned intersubjectifiable regularities in the form of potential equivalents established in the TT for ST equivalence-relevant features and enables us to obtain meaningful generalizations. Both regularities and generalizations should be capable of implementation in the applied branches of TS and, at the same time, help dynamize and intersubjectify the complex concept of equivalence. So, hopefully, this thesis will also contribute toward creating a link between the methodological, theoretical/descriptive and applied branches of TS to their mutual benefit.

Abstract:
The defining characteristic of a pedagogy informed by philosophical cosmopolitanism is a focus on the dialogic imagination: the coexistence of rival ways of life in the individual experience which incites us to interrogate common sense assumptions on culture, language, and identity, and combine contradictory certainties in an effort to think in terms of inclusive oppositions while rejecting the logic of exclusive oppositions. One of the goals of the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP), an educational network of bilateral writing-translation projects that establishes links between students in different countries, is to invite students to mediate between languages, cultures, and rhetorical traditions with the goal of transcending differences and find common ground. Students who participate to TAPP understand what is at stake when they write for a global audience by cultivating an attitude of openness that invites hospitable communication practices. The goal of the explorative study illustrated in the second part of the dissertation is to identify regularities of translation strategies in the genre of technical instructions. The dataset consists of a corpus of 40 texts compiled by pairing up 20 instructions written in English by students majoring in different areas of engineering in an American university and their translations into Italian (19,046 words), completed by students majoring in English in an Italian university. The research questions are: With reference to the translation strategies explicitation, implicitation, generalization, and particularization, what evidence is there of uniformity of practice in the translation of instructions from English into Italian? What are the most typical causes of zero shifts? Why do translators resort to rhetorical shifts? Results show that nonprofessional translators tend to resort more to implicitation than explicitation, and more to particularization than generalization. Due to the limited size of the corpus, it was impossible to identify typical causes for zero shifts, but further studies should focus on how writers can facilitate translation by using the topic/comment structure. Finally, translators resort to rhetorical shifts for reasons that have to do with cultural appropriateness in the target locale. The most common type of rhetorical shifts are context-related shifts in emphasis.

Abstract:

This essay deals with some of the difficulties that translation of a technical text may present, more specifically the handling of terminology, proper nouns and titles of cited publications. For this purpose, a text dealing with medical geology, taken from Essentials of Medical Geology (Selinus et al., 2005), was translated and analysed.

Medical geology is an interdisciplinary science and hence contains terminology from several different scientific areas. The present study includes terminology within the field of medicine and geochemistry in the analysis. The preferred and predominant translation procedure was literal translation (Munday, 2001:57). Many source text terms have synonyms in the target language. With the intention to preserve and transfer the level of technical style into the target text, terms were analysed and classified as belonging to one of three levels of technical style: academic, professional and popular (Newmark, 1988:151). The handling of proper nouns connected to medicine and geology was also included in the analysis. One common procedure is to use a translation which is established in the target language. The present study discusses the strategies used when no such established translation was found. The procedure of using a recognised translation was discussed in connection to the handling of titles of cited publications referred to in the source text.

Abstract:
In the context of an increasingly networked world, the availability of high quality translations is critical for success in the context of the growing international competition. Large international companies as well as medium sized companies are required to provide well translated, high quality technical documentation for their customers not only to be successful in the market but also to meet legal regulations and to avoid lawsuits. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the evaluation of translation quality, specifically concerning technical documentation, and answers two central questions: How can the translation quality of technical documents be evaluated, given the original document is available? How can the translation quality of technical documents be evaluated, given the original document is not available? These questions are answered using state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and translation evaluation metrics in the context of a knowledge discovery process. The evaluations are done on a sentence level and recombined on a document level by binarily classifying sentences as automated translation and professional translation. The research is based on a database containing 22, 327 sentences and 32 translation evaluation attributes, which are used for optimizations of five different machine learning approaches. An optimization process consisting of 795, 000 evaluations shows a prediction accuracy of up to 72.24% for the binary classification. Based on the developed sentence-based classifi- cation systems, documents are classified using recombination of the affiliated sentences and a framework for rating document quality is introduced. Therefore, the taken approach successfully creates a classification and evaluation system.

Abstract:
This paper is about the handling of challenging terminology within the technical field of structural engineering. The translation of two texts on structural systems "Antiquated Structural Systems Series", published in STRUCTURE magazine, serves as the basis for this study. The analysis focuses on the search and textual strategies for a selection of difficult terms. The terms are divided into four groups: terms with no Swedish equivalent; terms with more than one Swedish equivalent; acronyms; and measurements. The analysis shows that the search strategies are the same, regardless of term type, and that they involve many steps, including looking for terms in dictionaries and term banks; comparing terms in encyclopedias and parallel texts; and confirming usage. The textual strategies that were helpful in the translation were procedures based on the theories of Vinay and Darbelnet (in Munday 2008) and Ingo (2007), such as literal translation, borrowing, calque, adaptation and addition. The result shows that the chosen textual strategy for each challenging term differed greatly and depended on, for example, context and translator preference.

Al-Ma'ni, Musallam. "The problematics of technical translation into Arabic : the case of the Royal Air Force of Oman." Thesis, University of Salford, 2000. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26535/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the scope and intricacies of technical translation in Oman, in general, and its Royal Air Force (RAFO), in particular. The Study, which is the first of its kind in Oman, focuses on a specific category of Omani translators: technical translators currently working in RAFO with experience ranging from 3 to 10 years. To capture the reality of translation in Oman and to provide a corpus for this study, samples of translations rendered by the subject translators are examined and analysed. To achieve such objectives, six chapters make up the thesis: Chapter 1 sets both the motivations and the assumptions which underly the thesis. Chapter 2 selectively reviews some translation approaches within the sphere of translation studies. Chapter 3 is devoted to the study of technical translation and explores the scope of this type of translation. Chapter 4 examines the development of translation in the Arab world and focuses on the way it spread in the past and its current situation. Chapter 5 specifically takes the translation movement in RAFO as the case study. The chapter starts with a description of translation in Oman and RAFO and then moves to data collection, processing and analysis. Technical texts have been categorized, to our knowledge for the first time in the literature of technical translation, to three main groups according to the degree of their technicality: 1) Local Technical Texts (LTT), 2) Common Technical Texts (CTT), and 3) Highly Technical Texts (HTT). Chapter 6 concludes the thesis and provides some recommendations as well as suggestions for further research. The results of data analysis indicate that although technical translation plays a vital role in the development of the nation, there is still a lack of an overall strategy towards the organization of this profession at various levels. RAFO has endeavoured to introduce a programme that would produce qualified translators capable of dealing with texts of different degrees of technicality. Data analysis shows that the translators face little problems in handling texts from a linguistic point of view. However, the source of their problems is technical terminology for which there are neither specialists translators nor adequate Arabic dictionaries available. The fact that Oman still lacks a body and special dictionaries devoted to technico-scientific terms places obstacles for translating. It further hinders the standardization of terminology and causes confusion for translators as to which terms they may choose. It follows, therefore, that these and other results can be interpreted as reflecting support for the establishment of a body that would supervise and organize all translation activities in Oman such as a language academy. There is also a need for a nation-wide policy towards arabicisation, translation and dissemination of scientific and technical terms. A pan-Arab policy remains an ultimate goal.

Abstract:

The intention of this essay is to illustrate and describe various means to overcome some of the difficulties that any translator dealing with technical translations at some point or another would come upon – presented in a qualitative analysis. The text under analysis is a chapter called Into the Cosmos and is part of the book Planet Quest – The Epic Discovery of Alien Solar Systems by the American astronomer Ken Croswell. The analysis specifically focuses on terminology and two aspects that usually are part of the cultural adaptation of a text; namely additions and omissions. However, in this essay they help adapting the text towards a new target audience not so much because of culture, but rather because of my decision to fully disconnect the text from the context in which it previously functioned. And because of this, the target text was in the end given more of an educational character compared to the source text.

Krueger, R. "Exploring the interface between scientific and technical translation and cognitive linguistics : the case of explicitation and implicitation." Thesis, University of Salford, 2014. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/31872/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the interface between scientific and technical translation (STT) and cognitive linguistics (CL), placing particular emphasis on the translationally relevant phenomena of explicitation and implicitation. The two concepts are regarded as potential indicators of translational text-context interaction, which may be of specific importance in the knowledge-intense field of STT and which can be modelled within the CL framework. Parallel to the microscopic attempt to give a coherent account of explicitation and implicitation in STT from a CL perspective, the thesis follows a macroscopic approach that aims to highlight the wider potential which cognitive linguistics holds for the field of scientific and technical translation. Translationally relevant elements of the CL framework include a coherent and cognitively plausible epistemological basis that explains the stability of scientific knowledge, the concept of common ground, which can be used to model the shared knowledge of specialized discourse communities, the field of cognitive semantics, which has developed tools for modelling the organization and representation of specialized knowledge, and the concept of linguistic construal, which allows the description of various linguistic aspects of STT (explicitation and implicitation among them) from a cognitively plausible perspective. The first part of the thesis takes a macroscopic perspective, being concerned with scientific and technical translation, cognitive linguistics, the philosophical grounding of the two fields and their interface. The perspective is then narrowed down to the two specific phenomena of explicitation and implicitation, which are reconceptualized in cognitive linguistic terms so as to fit into the overall framework of the thesis. The interface between STT and CL is then illustrated in a qualitative corpus-based investigation of explicitation and implicitation as indicators of text-context interaction in translation. The qualitative discussion of the results of the corpus analysis then brings together the theoretical strands of the thesis.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates translation strategies and translation principles in technical translation. Five translation students and 5 professional translators from German-speaking Switzerland and 4 translation students and 6 professional translators from Sweden were asked to think aloud while translating a user guide from French into German and from French into Swedish, respectively. The focus of the analysis was on the strategies that could be observed by comparing the translation products with the source text; and on the principles underlying these strategies as revealed by the think-aloud protocols of the translation processes. In order to evaluate the extent to which the translation products complied with the fictitious translation brief given to the participants, 2 reviewers per language pair proofread the translation products. The analysis also included contrastive analyses of certain linguistic features of technical texts in French-German and French-Swedish. The results show that experience of translation does play a role in the choice of translation strategy. It is, however, an even more important factor with respect to knowing and applying translation principles in the translation process. Also, students more often display uncertainty regarding translation principles, and conflict between the principles verbalised and those actually followed. Language-pair specific differences were mostly found in connection with translation strategies. Comments about future directions include the need for clearer definitions and more systematic manipulations of the variables involved in translation, and the potential interest in investigating the principles governing how translations are revised through the use of think-aloud protocols.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Theses and dissertations constitute a substantial platform for the documentation and dissemination of research findings, and the professional presentation of such findings is crucial for maintaining scientific integrity. Highly effective fact finders may lack writing skills and experience, or they may simply encounter barriers when expressing ideas, and thus perhaps inadequately present what they have so adequately found. In short, adequate editing of theses and dissertations is essential. Whereas a multitude of guidelines is available for thesis and dissertation writing, there is little guidance available on the editing of such works. Thus, with the latter objective in mind, this thesis is dedicated to developing a practical model to editing postgraduate research papers. Despite a notable lack of theory in the field of thesis editing, which became apparent while reviewing the respective literature, the most suitable sources of theory were selected to provide a basis for developing a model for thesis editing. These sources, combined with insights from a practical dissertation editing assignment, allowed for the design of a model for the practical editing process of postgraduate research texts. The editing model is based on a process-oriented approach, i.e. one which focuses on the learning process of the student. Moreover, the model promotes a level of editorial intervention that conforms to the current perception of ethical intervention in thesis editing. Ethical intervention is currently being negotiated against the backdrop of such standards as the purpose of thesis writing as well as the requirement of originality of theses and dissertations. In a testing phase the model was applied in a thesis editing assignment and emerged as a valuable guide in the process of editing. It also proved practicable in all its major aspects. Nevertheless, since a single testing assignment is not sufficient to prove the general practicality of any model, the model is still to be considered a prototype and may have to undergo further refinement after additional comprehensive testing.

Goal: analyze the conceptual framework and develop practical methods of translation, to investigate the role of the translator and the specificity of auxiliary means in the translation of scientific technical sources in the field of bioengineering. Theoretical meaning: consists in the study of scientific and linguistic sources on the topic, illumination of problems and finding ways to overcome them, as well as the analysis of auxiliary technical means of translation of scientific and technical texts in the field of bioengineering. According to goal, three sections were developed describing all stages of elaboration of the chosen topic. The first section describes the theoretical foundations of technical translation research, including its historical origins and methodology. The second section aims to describe, through examples, the practical aspect of research into technical translation in the bioengineering field. One of the most expedient methods of translating bioengineered texts is proposed, by dividing the general discipline into basic ones. Aspects of translation of certain basic disciplines are considered: medicine, physics, chemistry, programming - and their difficulties are considered. The psychological characteristics of a successful technical translator are described and substantiated. The third section of the diploma examines the auxiliary equipment and the analysis of the translation made with their help. As a consequence, the feasibility of using these technical means to facilitate and accelerate translation activities is substantiated.

Translation is a complicated informational process, which means that the translator should render information transmitted as fully as possible. This can be achieved only if certain structural and semantic changes are introduced. Malindi, Nokuthula Yvonne. "Solving problems of non-equivalence when translating highly technical texts into an African Language : the translation of chemistry terms into isiZulu for a quadrilingual explanatory dictionary of chemistry (English Afrikaans isiZulu Sepedi)." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/53432.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is on solving non-equivalence problems when translating a highly technical text. This study investigates the term formation strategies used in providing the isiZulu term translation equivalents of 50 English chemistry dictionary entries and their definitions into isiZulu, totalling approximately 1 109 source text terms. This dictionary is a Quadrilingual Explanatory Dictionary for Chemistry (QEDC) comprises four languages, which are English, Afrikaans, Pedi and Zulu. I am providing and investigating the isiZulu translation equivalents only. The term list/DIY glossary was created using English chemistry terms excerpted manually from 50 chemistry dictionary entries definitions and terms collected from a ?keywords list. The keyword list was extracted from the source text semi-automatically using WordSmith Tools (a corpus query tool). This term list/DYI glossary was provided with isiZulu translation equivalents from the existing general isiZulu dictionaries and terminology lists. Due to the problem of non-equivalence between English and isiZulu, only 30% of translation equivalents could be found in the existing sources referred to above. The next step was therefore to collaborate with a chemistry specialist/expert, who is an isiZulu mother-tongue speaker, to try to find and/or create suitable translation equivalents for those terms that did not have ready translation equivalents which could not be found in the written sources referred to above. By consulting with the specialist/expert, the newly coined/created isiZulu terms could be ?legitimised . The term list/DIY glossary was then used for the translation of the source text. Before these translation term equivalents could be used for translating the source text, they were then back translated for validation reasons, i.e. to identify vagueness in the equivalents provided, as these are technical terms. For the translation of the source text, it was necessary to determine which of the various isiZulu translation equivalents for a particular SL term should be selected for use in the translation task. The consolidated term list/glossary was used not only as a DIY glossary/term list to translate the source text, but was also used in this study as terminological data in an analysis of the term formation strategies applicable and used in finding isiZulu translation equivalents for the English chemistry terms. The various strategies used were identified with reference to the term formation strategies listed by Baker (1992: 26 41), and Mtintsilana and Morris (1998: 110 112). The frequency of use of these term formation strategies applied to the translation task at hand were subsequently broadly analysed statistically. The study uncovered a number of term formation strategies used in providing the various isiZulu chemistry translation equivalents. These strategies include the use of loan words, paraphrasing, transliteration, semantic shift, compounding, etc. It was also clear from the term selection for use in the translation of the ST that both the translator and subject field specialist/expert preferred directly insertable translation equivalents rather than, for example, paraphrases, which could be cumbersome. The predominance of borrowing as a term formation strategy can probably be ascribed to the highly technical nature of the ST. It is, however, heartening to note that after borrowing, the most preferred strategy is the use of ready translatable equivalents, i.e. indigenous isiZulu terms. However, the practice of borrowing as a term formation strategy has a negative impact on the one-to-one relationship of a concept and its term, since a borrowed term does not assist in concept formation and the user s understanding the concept. I am of the opinion that this state of affairs is a result of the slow process in the standardisation of isiZulu terms, particularly in highly technical fields such as the field of chemistry.

Blackman-Lees, Shellon. "Towards a Conceptual Framework for Persistent Use: A Technical Plan to Achieve Semantic Interoperability within Electronic Health Record Systems." NSUWorks, 2017. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/998.

Full text
Abstract:
Semantic interoperability within the health care sector requires that patient data be fully available and shared without ambiguity across participating health facilities. The need for the current research was based on federal stipulations that required health facilities provide complete and optimal care to patients by allowing full access to their health records. The ongoing discussions to achieve interoperability within the health care industry continue to emphasize the need for healthcare facilities to successfully adopt and implement Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Reluctance by the healthcare industry to implement these EHRs for the purpose of achieving interoperability has led to the current research problem where it was determined that there is no existing single data standardization structure that can effectively share and interpret patient data within heterogeneous systems. The current research used the design science research methodology (DSRM) to design and develop a master data standardization and translation (MDST) model that allowed seamless exchange of healthcare data among multiple facilities. To achieve interoperability through a common data standardization structure, where multiple independent data models can coexist, the translation mechanism incorporated the use of the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Using RDF, a universal exchange language, allowed for multiple data models and vocabularies to be easily combined and interrelated within a single environment thereby reducing data definition ambiguity. Based on the results from the research, key functional capabilities to effectively map and translate health data were documented. The research solution addressed two primary issues that impact semantic interoperability – the need for a centralized standards repository and a framework that effectively maps and translates data between various EHRs and vocabularies. Thus, health professionals have a single interpretation of health data across multiple facilities which ensures the integrity and validity of patient care. The research contributed to the field of design science development through the advancements of the underlying theories, phases, and frameworks used in the design and development of data translation models. While the current research focused on the development of a single, common information model, further research opportunities and recommendations could include investigations into the implementation of these types of artifacts within a single environment at a multi-facility hospital entity.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil )--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the advent of the information age, government ministries in Lesotho, as well as nongovernmental agencies, are trying to gain publicity in terms of services they offer to the general public. The Ministry of Employment and Labour (MEL), for example, resorted to using radio programmes in order to inform the public about the services it offers. These range from career guidance and counselling, pre- and post-employment advice, information about occupational health and safety and HIV/AIDS, providing facts about what type of vacancies are available locally and internationally, to instilling the spirit of dialogue among relevant stakeholders in matters related to labour, employers and employees. During various weekly radio presentations, presented in Sesotho, several departments are able to go on-air and present services that their departments offer to the general public and what the public can do in the event they are given a disservice by the concerned department. In the process of doing so, many technical terms are used. These often take the form of code switches into English, translations from English into Sesotho and borrowings from English. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the use of code switching, translation and borrowing makes it possible for factory workers in Lesotho to understand the message that is being delivered to them in a clear and unmistakable manner that will influence a change of behaviour on the part of factory workers. In order to ascertain the level of comprehension of technical terms, participants completed a questionnaire in which they gave their understanding of various technical terms selected from transcribed MEL radio broadcasts. The findings of this study show that the use of code switching, translation and borrowing from English limit the understanding of what is being communicated, making the radio broadcasts less effective in disseminating information on matters related to HIV/AIDS, the plight of factory workers according to the ratified conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), legal terms related to contracts of employment, their commencement and termination, conditions of work, the level of the unemployed versus the employed, skills needed to venture into the country’s labour market and occupational health and safety guidelines as reflected in the Labour Code of Lesotho.

The objective of this master´ s dissertation is to make comments on the technical translator´ s present working conditions in Brazil by considering the translation activity as a labour dramaturgy in which the professional is continuously required to make choices and to weigh up his management decisions according to distinct and sometimes contradictory values. Therefore we use the theoreticmethodological principles of Ergology and the notions of producing conditions, primacy of the inter-discourse and inter-incomprehension, which is regulated in the framework of the French Discourse Analysis. The justification of the present research resides in the fact that there is a dearth of studies which deal with the translator´ s daily life and raise socio-historical questions that are implied in the activity of technical translation. Taking into consideration the ergologic premise, which is to closely observe what occurs in the actual activity, it was necessary to re-normalise the approximation of the situation of the technical translator´ s work in virtue of the difficulties which appeared with respect to the methodology. Thus, in order to approach the object of the study, the research proposal was made viable by means of a questionnaire, which was administered to voluntary translators, as a way of suggesting a reflection about what this professional does and how he/she does it with the purpose to provide a greater self-awareness as a worker. Thus our primary research interest focuses on the way in which the translator performs his/her task, that enables him/her to perceive his/her condition in the present time from a different perspective, which, in the ultimate analysis, can occasion an improvement of the quality of the services he/she renders

Abstract:
This thesis explores the cultural considerations American technical communicators must address when working with French colleagues and when creating technical documentation for French audiences. A review of the literature on intercultural communication theory was conducted, along with a review of the limited research on technical communication in France and the needs of French audiences. A qualitative online survey of French technical communicators was also conducted. Through this survey, French technical communicators reported on their intercultural beliefs, experiences, and practices, and information, language, and cultural needs. Survey responses were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Two main themes were developed as a result of this analysis: the importance of adapting content to French audiences, and the cultural differences between French and American information needs and communication styles. Survey findings were combined with theoretical and practical literature to offer American technical communicators guidance for successful intercultural interactions. This thesis concludes with suggestions for future practice and research in intercultural technical communication.

Abstract:
This dissertation searches into research article genre and their cultural conditioning factors, which are the textual markers that may present certain difficulties to the translator due to intercultural problems, as from the perspective of translation norms and the description of scientific research article genre. The aim of this assignment was to identify these cultural makers in the scientific articles in the field of Geriatrics and Gerontology, exemplifying parts of this conditioning universe through the survey of research article features and through translation comparisons. The intention was to demonstrate through theoretical reflection, practical samples and comparative analyses, how translation can take advantage of genre studies, translational norms and cultural conditioning factors in order to help the translations of scientific research articles. The corpus analysis procedures were based on the model created Lambert and Van Gorp (1985) in order to analyze literary translation here adapted to technical translation. After analyzing these cultural conditioning factors, as well as the genre features, this research leads to reflections on research article translation

Abstract:
Dictionaries have always been and still are one of the main tools for the translator s task. Nevertheless, terminography does not seem to have systematically benefited, at least in Brazil, from the close relation between technical dictionaries and this increasingly significant and particular target audience: technical translators. In the field of Culinary, for instance, which has witnessed a growing demand for translations in Brazil, much as the dictionaries available for the English-Portuguese language pair may contribute to the understanding of the source text, they still do not provide any information on how the terms are actually used in real texts. In other words, they do not help the translator in a crucial step of the translation activity: text production in the target language. The thesis advanced here is that a dictionary which seeks to meet the needs of a translator s text production should focus on the aspects which characterize technical texts from the point of view of translation itself, that is, it should describe and propose translation equivalents or suggestions for the Specialized Translation Units (STUs) occurring in these texts, which the translator in the area often comes across in her/his practice, whether they are terminological or not. Corpus Linguistics (CL), an empirical approach which regards language as a probabilistic system, has devoted itself to the identification of recurring lexico-grammatical patterns in language by observing authentic texts organized as electronic corpora. It is, therefore, the field of studies we deem capable of providing the most adequate theoretical and methodological support to extract the STUs from real texts. In order to embrace these units, a proposal of an online bidirectional English-Portuguese dictionary is presented, which is aimed at the technical Culinary translator. The steps followed in the development of this study were organized in six chapters. The first deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of technical translation and discusses the role of terminology in translation practice. The second examines the specificities of the Culinary translator s job in Brazil and characterizes the culinary recipe , the focus of this study, in terms of text genre and typology. In the third chapter, the theoretical and methodological foundations of CL are presented, as well as the criteria used in the compilation of the corpus to be used for the identification of the STUs. Chapter IV describes the exploration of this corpus: first, we present the study in which a manual search of lexico-grammatical patterns using the WordSmith Tools program is carried out; next, a methodology for semi-automatic extraction of STUs in the corpus is described. Chapter V presents our proposal for a bidirectional online Culinary Dictionary for Translators, describing its macro- and microstructure. Chapter VI contains the final considerations. The results obtained in this study bear witness to the fact that CL, if used not only as a methodology, but as a theoretical approach in the investigation of specialized corpora, enables the production of more useful and trustworthy dictionaries for the translator, for it takes into account any association patterns between words with a probability of occurrence in representative texts in the field a fact which strongly supports the inclusion of these patterns in a dictionary aimed at the translator-producer-of-texts

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on instruction manuals as a text genre, and specifically manuals of smart products (smartphones and tablets). In order to carry out a detailed study of the genre, a corpus of 70 instruction manuals has been compiled, including texts from the Chinese companies Hua Wei and Lenovo, and the Spanish companies BQ, Energy Sistem and Wolder. A corpus-based analysis has been carried out to find (1) what similarities and differences there are between source language manuals in Chinese and in Spanish (comparable corpus), especially at macro and microstructural levels, and (2) what translation techniques are most frequently used in translations of manuals from Chinese into Spanish (parallel corpus). Our results show that there are no big differences at macrostructural level. At microstructural level, Lenovo tends to use expansions and Hua Wei omissions; there are many cases of interpretation or adaptation in the manuals of both brands; and errors are only minor in both cases. The most frequently identified translation techniques are literal translation, modulation, adaptation, and borrowing.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Goal: to study aspects of semantic structure in English scientific and technical terminology, the identification with difficulties with translating terms, also overview of methodological principles in translation of scientific and technical terminology. Theoretical meaning: generalization linguistic aspects of translation scientific and technical terminology, and coverage of the methodological foundations for scientific and technical translation. The object of the Study: lexical units of the scientific and technical language. The Subject of the Study: aspects of translation in English scientific and technical terminology. Methodological base: theoretical basis of monitoring information sources, transliteration, transcription, explication. Practical significance: use in the translation of scientific and technical documents. The results of the study can be used to solve practical problems related with English-Ukrainian translation in branches of scientific and technical as well as for communication with specialists in science and technology. The proposed analysis may be used to writing scientific papers on linguistics and translation. Results: The study reflects an attempt to give theoretical and methodological recommendations for the translation of internationalisms, commonly used words, avoidance loan translation in translation activities in the science and technology, which facilitates the work of specialists in the translation of scientific and technical texts. However, it is impossible to cover the whole complex of problematic issues of terminology translation in current paper. New lexical elements generated by the development of science, lexical and semantic phenomena related to the cultural and ethnic features of the original languages and the language of translation are a large base for research. In the process of translating technical documentation, the translator must have a special terminology base knowledge, understand a specific area of knowledge. Adequate translation of a multi-valued term is carried out in accordance with the context, which reproduces its specific meaning with the use of translation transformations. Important in the process of translation of technical documentation is the translator's possession of special, narrow-profile terminology, the terminology of a particular terms of human activity. Conclusion: Special attention was focuses on the methods of a theoretical and applied research, which was based previously the study of the issue, and starting new monitoring of scientific and technical translation. The research studies structural-semantic and translation features of terminogenic scientific and technical terminology is a prospect for further research in the field of scientific and technical translation.

Abstract:
Nowadays knowing professional language is an essential part of professional success and career growth for university graduates majoring in non-philological studies. The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to further enhancement and efficiency of foreign language teaching at university level. Based on the theoretical background and confirmation of hypotheses, the paper describes and explains why it is appropriate to include, in addition to training of basic language skills (passive: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, active: speaking and writing) an extra fifth skill: translating into the mother tongue. Undoubtedly, the translating skill helps to improve receptive and productive skills necessary for working with academic text and to facilitate better use of information sources; at the same time, this skill is desirable in corporate practice and in academia. This paper deals with methods of foreign language teaching from both diachronic and synchronous perspectives, with emphasis on the application of translation. It analyses the role of translation in teaching using a specific example; it provides analysis of professional style and some features of professional text; it justifies the importance of translation into the mother tongue; it deals with selected problems of the theory, practice and didactics of translation. The research part is based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of students' translations. It confirms the hypotheses that students have difficulty in translating into the mother tongue and in using various sources of information, and that guidance on how to proceed in translating has a positive influence on them. The research part is followed by some suggestions for specific methodologies and exercises that may be used to integrate translating into professional language teaching at university level, namely for graduates majoring in non-philological studies. The suggestions are based on the author's research results; naturally, they are focused on eliminating possible inaccuracies and mistakes, and also on developing desirable skills.

Abstract This study focuses on translation strategies and effects on technical translation and aims to provide evidence that technical translation requires complex strategies to deal with translation issues. An English popular science book and the Chinese translation are selected to perform the ST (source text) and TT (target text) comparisons. Based on Toury’s (1995) and Baker’s (1992) models, the analysis is performed first on the textual style, then at three linguistic levels: textual, syntactic and lexical, where the issues of coherence and cohesion (at textual level); word order, collocation, and metaphor (at syntactic level); polysemy and terminology (at lexical level) are examined separately. This investigation adopts the translation strategies and effects of Vinay and Darbelnet (1995/2004), Newmark (1988) and Venuti (1995/1998) as parameters for the analysis. The study shows that the translation strategies are highly exhibited in the technical translation. The results of the study indicate that the strategy of paraphrase is commonly used both at the textual and syntactic levels, while modulation is used at the syntactic level and through translation at the lexical level. The result provides evidence that technical translation requires various translation strategies. The translation, with high-frequency use of paraphrase, tends to be more redundant, or explicit than the corresponding source text. This creates an effect of explicitation in the translation and leads to a text that focuses more on the acceptability (in term of the target text) of the translation rather than adequacy (in term of the source text). Keywords: technical translation, translation strategy, translation effect, paraphrase, modulation, through translation, explicitation, domestication

Abstract:
Tanto a tradução audiovisual como a tradução técnica são modalidades que têm um grande peso no que diz respeito à comunicação interlinguística e intercultural global dos dias de hoje, pois permitem a compreensão cultural e linguística do grosso dos textos produzidos diariamente em todo o mundo, o que revela a sua grande importância em termos culturais (sobretudo no caso da tradução audiovisual), sociais, científicos (no caso da tradução técnica) e económicos; Abstract: Internship report of the internship at Wordzilla – Audiovisual translation and technical translation: concepts, characteristics and the role of the translator This report follows the internship which took place at Wordzilla and it is sequent to obtaining the Master’s degree in Translation of the University of Évora. The purpose of this academic paper is providing a comprehensive report on the internship experience, with emphasis on the types of translation practiced, subtitling, a subtype of audiovisual translation, and technical translation. This paper will also include a concise analysis of some of the translations done throughout the course of said internship. Both audiovisual and technical translation have a very deep influence on nowadays interlingual and intercultural communication, because they allow for the linguistic and cultural understanding of the majority of texts produced worldwide on a daily basis. This reveals the major importance they have culturally (especially audiovisual translation), socially, scientifically (as for technical translation) and economically.
