Abstract:
Abstract Technical University of Liberec implemented programs to attract pupils, high school students and first-year university students for study of technical and scientific disciplines. The first program is called “Children’s university” with the aim to convince elementary school pupils and secondary schools student. Children attend practical lectures and solve basic scientific tasks including work with real scientific equipment. They got exams for their activities and when passing all prescribed “lectures” they got a “diploma”. In addition to university examinations the Children’s University offers many different leisure activities, eg Open University, Walk for science and technology, Scientific cafes, Saturdays with technology. The main objective of the Children’s University is to catch talented individuals early and awaken their interest in university studies of technical and scientific disciplines in order to better direct their future professional orientation towards sectors with high added value, which the labour market has a long-term interest in. The second program, entitled “Scientific incubator”, is a follow-up programme to catch talented first-years university students for technical and scientific disciplines.

Abstract:
Polymer-based nanotextiles are produced by electrostatic spinning. Nanospider technology developed by Prof. Jirsák at Technical University in Liberec also uses electrospinning. This technology has been modified over time. The aim of this paper is to compare two modifications of this technology and determine which one is more suitable for the production of nanotextiles for civil engineering applications. The comparison was performed using images from scanning electron microscope and measurements of weight per square meter of the fabrics. For the civil engineering applications it is important for the fabric to be as homogeneous at macroscale as possible, so that properties of different parts of the fabric are approximately equal. We have found that modification of Nanospider technology using rotating roller provides better results than a modification which involves a movable slider.

Abstract:
The Brandenburg University of Technology has carried out investigations in cooperation with the technical University of Liberec to improve the energy efficiency of cutting machine tools. In contrast to investigations already carried out, the focus here was on the loading behavior in the partial load range. The investigations carried out were limited to longitudinal turning with low cutting depths. A structural steel and a tempering steel were used as materials. By determining the no-load power of the used lathe, actual statements about the cutting performance were possible. For the determination of the efficiency, the cutting performance was recorded at different speeds. All further stress conditions remained constant for the investigations. As a result of the investigation, the potential of minimum quantity lubrication was confirmed. The efficiency improved by an average of 5 %. The influence of the angle of setting was remarkable. The optimization potential of energy efficiency was at 14 %. The investigations also revealed a high correlation between stress conditions, workpiece material and lubricant used.

Abstract:
Abstract The Technical University of Liberec and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg investigated the influence of cooling lubricants on the surface roughness and energy efficiency of cutting machine tools. After summarizing the achieved experimental results, the authors conclude that cooling lubricants extensively influence the cutting temperature, cutting forces and energy consumption. Also, it is recognizable that cooling lubricants affect the cutting tools lifetime and the workpiece surface quality as well. Furthermore, costs of these cooling lubricants and the related environmental burden need to be considered. A current trend is to reduce the amount of lubricants that are used, e.g., when the Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) technique is applied. The lubricant or process liquid is thereby transported by the compressed air in the form of an aerosol to the contact area between the tool and workpiece. The cutting process was monitored during testing by the three following techniques: lubricant-free cutting, cutting with the use of a lubricant with the MQL technique, and only utilizing finish-turning and finish-face milling. The research allowed the authors to monitor the cutting power and mark the achieved surface quality in relation to the electrical power consumption of the cutting machine. In conclusions, the coherence between energy efficiency of the cutting machine and the workpiece surface quality regarding the used cooling lubricant is described.

Abstract:
Recently, the modeling of physical properties of nanofiber textiles has attracted a lot of attention. Since standard macroscopic models cannot satisfactorily explain the observed properties of such materials, it is necessary to develop models based on the knowledge of exact microscopic structure of nanotextiles. In this paper, we study the microscopic structure of two types of polymer membranes, made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) and PUR (polyurethane). The membranes were bought from Technical University of Liberec, where they have been were produced on NanospiderTM - NS 4S1000U setup. The samples were produced at various speeds of substrate (10, 25 and 50 mm/min). By the gravimetric analysis we have found the linear dependence of grammage (mass per square meter) on inversed speed of substrate. The nanofiber structure was observed by electron scanning microscope (SEM) Tescan Maia 3. Subsequently cross sections of the sample were obtained by various methods. The thickness and internal structure of the membrane was determined from these cross sections. It was found that the internal structure is very similar to the surface structure. Based on these observations we have determined parameters important for development of a 3D model of the nanofiber network.

Abstract:
The University Forest Enterprise (UFE) is a special-purpose facility at the Technical University in Zvolen (TUZVO). The UFE is aimed at the practical education of students, scientific research associated with all forestry activities, demonstration objects, and management of the forest fund. lt is thus possible to demonstrate several aspects of forestry such as forest management, management of forest reproductive material, silviculture, logging operations, forestry constructions and ameliorations, landscape management, game management, fishery, and beekeeping. To follow these goals, 67 permanent research plots, 18 temporary plots, and 103 demonstration objects are currently maintained at the territory of the enterprise, all connected to the network of excursion and demonstration paths. The UFE manages the forest land fund (9,729 ha) according to the needs of the Technical University, and with respect to the purpose of the enterprise, 80% of the forest area managed by the enterprise is classified into the category of specialpurpose forests. The forest land fund is composed of state-owned forest land as well as forest properties of other owners. Forest plant communities ofthe UFE belang to five altitudinal vegetation zones (298-1035 m above sea level). Broadleaved tree species evidently predominate. Due to the special focus of management, the UFE uses as much as possible the concepts of the close-to-nature silviculture. Due to varied natural conditions, it is possible to apply several silvicultural systems. The application of shelterwood and selection systems with maximum utilisation of the natural potential of indigenous tree species is strongly preferred.

Abstract:
Middle East Technical University (METU) campus has such an extensive area that reaching the necessary information which affects campus life, such as the locations of the buildings, classrooms, computer labs, and etc. may be very difficult for anyone who does not know the campus well, and even for a student, personnel or a graduate who had a long time in the campus. An interactive campus map and a database structure related to this map which can be accessed by multiple types of users on the Internet can display this information with its geographical locations, and will reduce the "
difficulty for reaching information"
widely. For this purpose, data of METU were collected from various sources, edited, organized, and inserted into data tables. An interactive campus map displaying the locations of the physical structures and facilities in the campus was created in Scalable Vector Grapics (SVG) standard, and published on the Internet. By JavaScript functions, the map can be browsed with map navigation tools, including zoom in, zoom out, move and information buttons, and layers control. There is a search section on the user interface, which allows users make queries to find building and classroom names, and list the buildings and facilities according to their usage and category types. Data are stored in PostgreSQL database, transmitted through PHP scripts, and can be edited by authorized users through the specialized web interfaces. Lastly, web-based implementation of the application is entirely based on open-source standards.

Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Public institutions require financial resources in order to deliver quality services to the community. The survival of each and every organisation primarily relies on the availability and proper management of financial resources in order to provide effective and efficient service to its clients. Section 195 (1) (b) of the Republic of South Africa Constitution Act, 1996 , Act 108 of 1996 compels public institutions to promote and implement mechanisms that will promote efficient , economic and effective use of resources. South African Public Universities derives larger part of their revenue from the government. The South African government finances South African Universities on the basis of student enrolments. Funding for South African universities and technikons has increased from 10% in the 1996/1997 financialyear to 14% in the 2000/2001 budget. Despite the increase in the financing of the education sector, there were also significant changes in student enrolments at South African universities (Kulati, 2000: 27). Students are leaving from historically black universities for historically white ones and many more are enrolling at technikons than at universities. There are a number of reasons attributed to the decrease in student enrolment in former black universities. Black universities are perceived to be of inferior status as compared to former white universities in terms of their quality and resources. It is expected that government subsidies to historically black universities might fall by 26% over the next three years because of the projected decline in student enrolments. Taking into consideration the enrolment linked subsidy, changed enrolment patterns have drastically affected subsidy allocations by the government to most historically black universities such as Vista University. According to Caruna et al.,(1998: 55), tertiary educational institutions are required, like business firms, to monitor and adapt to the continuous changed taking place in the political, economic, social and the technological environment. The affected institutions are compelled to adapt their service delivery mechanisms if they are to remain financially viable in the near future. It is for this reason that the researcher will explore the use of privatisation as an alternative strategy to service delivery. This study investigate the manner in which activities of the technical services department within Vista University Welkom Campus can be contracted out with an aim of improving cost efficiency within the University. The study developed a normative model which can be used as a guideline in the process of contracting out services and also explain how such model can applied in the process of contracting out activities of the technical services department. The study further identified the responsibilities of different role players who will in one way or another be affected by the contracting process within the University. The study concluded that for the contracting out process to be cost effective, the University have to adopt a seasonally priced contract which reduces activities of the service producer in winter and concentrate activities of the service producer in summer.
Studente verlaat historiese swart universiteite om by histories blanke universiteite in te skryf en meer studente skryf by technikons in as by universiteite.

Abstract:
In order for our future engineers to be able to work toward a sustainable future, they must be versed not only in sustainable engineering but also in engineering design. An engineering education must train our future engineers to think flexibly and to be adaptive as it is unlikely that their future will have them working in one domain. They must, instead, be versatilists. The School of Engineering at James Madison University has been developed from the ground up to provide this general engineering training with an emphasis on engineering design, systems thinking, and sustainability. Students take courses in math and science, business and liberal arts, engineering science, sustainability, and design. In this paper, we discuss how sustainability is taught in a multi-context perspective through the School’s curriculum and pedagogy. We do not mean to present the School’s approach as an all or nothing model, but instead as a collection of approaches of which hopefully one or more may be appropriate at another university.

Abstract:
Urban geoheritage is a phenomenon that is present in almost every city, but so far, only some cities use it as a tourist product. In May and June 2019, in order to create an urban geoheritage trail in Liberec, it was mapped in the wider city centre. Considering the vastness of the area, mapping was carried out by volunteers who were interested in the topic of popularization of geology but did not have the expertise of geological knowledge. This lack of expertise may seem to be a significant limiting factor, but in fact, it is a positive thing, as the knowledge of the mapping volunteer is at a similar (low) level to the future user of the educational trail. Thus, in the evaluation of geosites, the expert-layman barrier is eliminated and the benefit is the feedback of the future user. However, participatory research has its own specifics, which must be adapted to the methodology used. First, it is to ensure the homogeneity of the data that is collected by a large number of volunteers and which can be influenced by subjective influences. Furthermore, it is their professional value and practical application. Finally, yet importantly, the technical parameters of data that will be further processed in GIS. This paper describes the research methodology used and summarizes the experience with the use of participatory research for the purpose of mapping urban geoheritage in Liberec.

Abstract:
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a complex process of managing not only design documentation in 3D form but it also includes all the consecutive stages of the design analysis, followed by construction management, and including facility management after the site completion. The success in the collaboration to unite common efforts of architects, constructors and HVAC engineers would make the work of all involved stakeholders more productive because the existing information technologies provide this option already for a long time. The training for effective use of this relatively new and very complex approach from the very beginning of the building lifecycle in the construction industry is even a more complex task. Universities have to join the promotion of BIM ideas not only to the designers and engineers, but to a much wider public than at present. The history of BIM teaching and the approaches used at Riga Technical University (RTU) are outlined in this paper. RTU along with several other universities from Lithuania have joined the EU sponsored Leonardo da Vinci project BIMTRAIN initiated by regional software distributer and developer AGA-CAD which facilitates the BIM implementation through the training.
