Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
Den fjärde artikeln utgörs av Reasons for knitting blogging and its importance for crafting av Katja Vilhunen, Sinikka Pöllänen and Harri Pitkäniemi.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Through a re-articulation of Derridean différance, Bernard Stiegler claims that the human is defined by an originary default that displaces all psychic and social life onto technical supplements. His philosophy of technics re-articulates the logic of the supplement as concerning both human reflexivity and its supports, and the history of the différance of life itself. This has been criticised for reducing Derrida's work to a metaphysics of presence, and for instituting a humanism of the relation to the inorganic. By refuting these claims, this article will show that Stiegler's doubling of différance enables him to articulate the human as constituted by both the individuation characteristic of ‘life’, and that of a technical, psychic, and collective individuation. Putting forward a reading of the logic of the trace in life, and emphasising the aspects of Leroi-Gourhan, Simondon, and Canguilhem that Stiegler uses in his reading of Derrida, I will demonstrate that the political stakes of adaption and adoption in his Noopolitics require this re-articulation of différance. Technics shapes the human future, arising from this differential mutation; marking the invention of the human as the site of the political.

Abstract:
Introduction: Task sharing holds promise for scaling up depression care in countries such as India, yet requires training large numbers of non-specialist health workers. This pilot trial evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a digital program for training non-specialist health workers to deliver a brief psychological treatment for depression. Methods: Participants were non-specialist health workers recruited from primary care facilities in Sehore, a rural district in Madhya Pradesh, India. A three-arm randomized controlled trial design was used, comparing digital training alone (DGT) to digital training with remote support (DGT+), and conventional face-to-face training. The primary outcome was the feasibility and acceptability of digital training programs. Preliminary effectiveness was explored as changes in competency outcomes, assessed using a self-reported measure covering the specific knowledge and skills required to deliver the brief psychological treatment for depression. Outcomes were collected at pre-training and post-training. Results: Of 42 non-specialist health workers randomized to the training programs, 36 including 10 (72%) in face-to-face, 12 (86%) in DGT, and 14 (100%) in DGT+ arms started the training. Among these participants, 27 (64%) completed the training, with 8 (57%) in face-to-face, 8 (57%) in DGT, and 11 (79%) in DGT+. The addition of remote telephone support appeared to improve completion rates for DGT+ participants. The competency outcome improved across all groups, with no significant between-group differences. However, face-to-face and DGT+ participants showed greater improvement compared to DGT alone. There were numerous technical challenges with the digital training program such as poor connectivity, smartphone app not loading, and difficulty navigating the course content—issues that were further emphasized in follow-up focus group discussions with participants. Feedback and recommendations collected from participants informed further modifications and refinements to the training programs in preparation for a forthcoming large-scale effectiveness trial. Conclusions: This study adds to mounting efforts aimed at leveraging digital technology to increase the availability of evidence-based mental health services in primary care settings in low-resource settings.

Roste i počet vyšetření.

Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of machine translation (MT) on the translation workflow at the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT), focusing on two language pairs and two MT paradigms: English-into-French with statistical MT and English-into-Finnish with neural MT. We collected data from 20 professional translators at DGT while they carried out real translation tasks in normal working conditions. The participants enabled/disabled MT for half of the segments in each document. They filled in a survey at the end of the logging period. We measured the productivity gains (or losses) resulting from the use of MT and examined the relationship between technical effort and temporal effort. The results show that while the usage of MT leads to productivity gains on average, this is not the case for all translators. Moreover, the two technical effort indicators used in this study show weak correlations with post-editing time. The translators’ perception of their speed gains was more or less in line with the actual results. Reduction of typing effort is the most frequently mentioned reason why participants preferred working with MT, but also the psychological benefits of not having to start from scratch were often mentioned.

Abstract:
Diffusive gradient in thin film technique (DGT) represents a relatively new approach for in situ determinations of labile metal-species in aquatic systems. The DGT device passively accumulates labile species from the solution while deployed in situ, and therefore contamination problems associated with conventional collection and filtration procedures are eliminated. This study deals with a possible modification of DGT technique. The key of using DGT technique for speciation analysis of metals is to find out suitable binding phase and diffusion layer. The new resin gel based on Spheron Oxin (5 sulphophenyl-azo-8-hydroxyquinoline) ion exchanger with a higher selectivity to trace metals than Chelex 100 could potentially provide more information on metals speciation in aquatic systems. The performance of this new binding phase was tested for the determination of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and U under laboratory conditions. The hydrogel layer based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was synthesized and tested as a new diffusion gel for application in DGT technique.

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis deals with comparison between copper uptake by radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and concentration of copper measured by a DGT-device and concentration of copper obtained by extraction with generally used extraction agents (HNO3, NaNO3 and water). Plants were cultivated in pot experiments on a tested non-treated and gradually spiked soil. The amount of copper was determined in various part of radish (whole plant, above- and below-ground part) after mineralization in the APION mineralizer by ET – AAS. The highest concentration was in belowground part, especially in root tissues and sheel of root bulb. It confirms copper is associated with cell walls. The amount of copper taken by radish up does not pass beyond sanitary standards not even in spiked soils and consummation of radish is not unhealthy. Good correlations were found between copper concentration in radish and the amount of copper extracted with HNO3, NaNO3 and water and the amount found in soil solution. Results of extraction with HNO3 confirmed the amount of copper was stable in spiked soils during the pot experiments. The DGT experiments have shown that the rate of resupply from the solid phase to soil solution is constant during the deployment time. Whereas the release of copper decreases after 24 hours in natural soil. Copper added to soil in form of cupric ions is present in the different form after one month-equilibration than copper present in unspiked soils. The results obtained by DGT measurements were approximately up to two orders of magnitude lower than copper concentration obtained by leaching with sodium nitrate. The extraction with sodium nitrate does not provide true reflection of metal availability to plant root system and soil microorganism. High values of correlation coefficients (R2 > 0,9) were found between concentration of copper in radish plant and the concentration of copper in soil solution measured by DGT technique. Concentration of copper in soil solution was three times higher than concentration measured by DGT technique. Soil solution contains species of copper that are not measured by DGT technique and available to plants. Concentration of metals obtained by DGT measurements is more closely to real concentration of bioavailable forms of metal in soil. Therefore it is possible to recommend the DGT technique as a technique for determination of bioavailable forms of copper in soils.

The aim of this thesis is testing of resin gels used in diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) for determination of mercury in natural waters. The sorbets, chosen for preparation of resing gels were: Duolit GT- 73, Spheron- Thiol, and Chelex 100 and newly modified sorbent Iontosorb AV. At the beginning of work, the preparation procedure of all resing gels was optimized. After optimalization of preparation procedure the resin gels were tested in mercury model solutions. The recovery test and time dependence test were performed. When the basic tests were finished, they were followed by the tests of influence of natural ligand (humic acids and chlorides), and other parameters (above all pH and ionic strenght), on mercury determination by DGT technique.

Diploma thesis deals with usage of the diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) for the determination of labile metal species in the surface water and sediments of Brno water reservoir. Sediment and water samples were collected on the selected sides of Brno water reservoir on September and October 2008. The DGT technique was used for determination of depth profiles of Fe, Mn, Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni and Al. The DGT probes with three different thicknesses of diffusive layer were applied into the sediment samples. The obtained results gave the information about release of metals from solid phase into the pore water of sediment. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Pb and Cd in sediments were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave decomposition. The DGT technique was used also for determination of Fe, Mn, Pb and Cd in surface water from Brno water reservoir.

Abstract:
The theoretical part of this doctoral thesis deals with determination of mercury and its species in aquatic systems. Special attention is paid to the use in situ sampling technique diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) and its development. Current resin gels used for determination of mercury by DGT technique Duolite GT-73, Chelex-100 and Spheron-Thiol are described. Moreover, new types of resin gels including Iontosorb AV modified by imidazole or 6-mercaptopurine and commercially available titanium dioxide. Preparations of resin gels and their basic tests in model solution according to DGT Research are described. Mercury accumulation in relation to time and basic recovery test were tested and capacity of resins was determined. All tested resins meet the requirements of basic DGT Research tests and relative standard deviations of mercury in recovery tests were lower than 10 %. The sorption capacity of resins varied from 1,5 to 6 µmol.l-1 and decreased in following order: Duolite GT-73 > ISAV-IM > Chelex-100 > Spheron-Thiol > TiO2 > ISAV-MP. Mercury sorption on resins was investigated under conditions similar to those in natural waters. It was found that the ionic strength commonly occurring in natural waters does not affect the determination of mercury. The presence of chlorides significantly affects the determination of mercury using DGT with titanium dioxide and therefore this sorbent can not be recommended for the determination of mercury in sea waters. The accumulated amount of mercury, depending on the pH shows that all the sorbents can be used in natural waters with pH in the range form 4 to 8. Mercury sorption is most affected by the presence of humic acids, especially at ion-exchange resins containing other than thiol functional groups. The exception is titanium dioxide for which physical sorption of humic acid metal complexes is typical. Cadmium and copper in model solutions in the molar balance of the excess mostly influenced the sorption of mercury on Chelex-100 and Spheron-Thiol resins. After laboratory tests, the DGT units with studied sorbents were used for the determination of mercury in natural waters of South Moravia (Svratka, Jihlava and Svitava river). Mercury concentration determined using DGT units containing Duolite GT-73 resin was comparable to the total dissolved concentration of mercury in river water provided by direct determination using AAS technique. Order of magnitude smaller concentrations than the total dissolved mercury concentration were found using DGT containing Spheron-Thiol and ISAV-MP resins. These sorbents are probably able to capture only mercury present in the form of labile complexes. This can be used for speciation analysis if more DGT units with different resins are deployed together. Subtracting the measured DGT Spheron-Thiol or ISAV-MP concentrations from the DGT Duolite GT-73 concentration, information about the amount of mercury present in the form of stabile complexes can be obtained. The amount of mercury determined after application of DGT units containing ISAV-IM, Chelex 100 or TiO2 can probably represent the mercury fraction bound in even weaker complexes than fraction determined by Spheron-Thiol and ISAV-MP DGT.

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis deals with usage of gel techniques for in situ measurement of bioavailable metals in soils and sediments. The DGT technique was applied to soil samples from the localities of Zlín, Tuřany and Chrlice for estimation of bioavailable metals in soils. These soils were amended by sewage sludges in years 1980-1987. The experiment using diffusive gels with different pore size, APA and RG gels, has shown that the DGT can be used for assessment of trace metal soil complexes - small inorganic and larger organic. The results obtained by DGT measurements were approximately up to two orders of magnitude lower than metal concentrations obtained by leaching with sodium nitrate. The leaching with sodium nitrate does not provide true reflection of metal availability to plant root system and soil microorganisms and the DGT technique seems to be a better predictor of metal bioavailability. Only small differences between undisturbed and homogenized soil samples were found out by application of DGT to soil samples from localities of Veverská Bítýška and Ostrovačice. The undisturbed soil is not homogenous and the DGT unit gives information only about the part of the soil which is in direct contact with the unit. The procedure with soil slurry can be recommended for the characterization of large soil areas and estimation of bioavailable metals in soils. Gel techniques were also used for the study of processes occuring in sediments. Mercury species and other metals were analysed in surface water, pore water and sediments collected from two sampling sites in the Dele River in northern France. This river had been polluted during the last century by the activity of Métaleurop factory, which dealt with metal ore treatment. The application of DGT technique using two specific ion-exchange resins, Chelex-100 and Duolite GT-73, provided assessment of mercury in sediment pore water. DGT and DET techniques together with centrifugation provided also high resolution depth profiles of Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd in pore water. It is not possible to determine which sampling site was more contaminated. Only small differences in mercury species and metal content were observed between sampling sites. The Dele River can be classified as contaminated river according to total mercury content in sediments and as slightly contaminated river from the point of view of methylmercury content. Correlations between mercury species and sulphide content confirm that total mercury and sulphide content count among factors influencing the mercury release to pore water and controlling processes of methylation and demethylation. Only low toxicity of sediment slurries was found out by the bioluminiscence test with Vibrio fischeri. The results of doctoral thesis demonstrate gel techniques as a very good tool in environmental analysis.

First of all, this thesis sets itself a goal to introduce some common technics for datamining in genomics and as a next step to implement own algorithm like algorithm BLAST. In the concrete, this work is pointed to sequences of DNA. The DNA sequence contains in itself genetic information, which is template for living organism. For explanation this information can be used number of technics. This paper describes algorithm Fasta and algorithms from BLAST family. With these algorithms, it is possible to gain a lot of important information even about such DNA sequences, where only primary structure is known. Principle of these algorithms is based on alignments of one query sequence, which we want to obtain some information from, with many sequences stored in database. According to result alignment, it is possible to determine many features of the query sequence.

Abstract:
Prior to 1994, the media operated in an environment that can best be described as ‘suppressed’. Diversity of thoughts, views and opinions on media platforms were non-existent as the regime, at the time, ruled with an iron-fist. A variety of print media outlets sought to reflect reality, but it was a steady struggle especially for those with meagre resources, and exacerbated by the constant clampdowns. The state-run broadcaster, if anything, entrenched discriminatory principles and practices. Given our precarious past, the birth of democracy proved to be the perfect panacea for a promising pathway for the media fraternity. Transformation, in more ways than one, permeated the sector. Reflections of the South African Media: 1994-2019 is a compilation by authors who have peculiar insight of and excelled in the different areas of the fast-developing industry in the first 25 years of South Africa’s democracy. And they are no ordinary authors. Every chapter contributed came from women and men who had, through the years, a direct link with ML Sultan Technikon, Technikon Natal, Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) or Durban University of Technology (DUT) * either as a student, lecturer, visiting professor, speaker or associate. Compiling and editing this book has been an incredibly invigorating experience. It was never in doubt whose image will adorn the cover of the book, so it was beautifully uplifting that many authors, not knowing my choice, gave Nelson Mandela due recognition. My brief to the authors was simple: let me have your personal lookback in your own style on the topic that you are most comfortable with. All of them stepped up to the plate, and the vast array of content in the book bares strong testimony. A section titled Journeys in Journalism encapsulates input from alumni of DUT Journalism – they were afforded free reign to trace the territory they traversed. I’m indebted to each and every contributor for generously volunteering their precious time and talent to the book. They were simply magnificent. It has to be said that this publication far exceeded my expectations as it, initially, was a humble idea to celebrate 25 years of the media industry with a handful of contributions. Little did I realise that my desk will be flooded with 40 pieces of excellence and a Foreword penned by the brilliant Jeremy Thompson. My eternal gratitude must also be extended to the small team of assistants for understanding my vision upfront and rallying remarkably throughout. Once you’ve enjoyed the read, I invite you to share Reflections of the South African Media: 1994-2019 with whoever you believe can benefit from its rich and diverse content!

The DAC Assessment Tool (DAT) is a questionnaire which may be used or completed by the study PI and her/his team covering design, analyze, and communicate topics important to consider when designing informative studies. While not all points are relevant to all studies, in general they are intended to promote sound and proven scientific methodology combined with the use of recent innovations in trial design. For example, in addition to supporting PI teams as they plan their study, fully completed DATs can serve as diagnostic guides to help study stakeholders assess whether a proposed study is likely to provide definitive answers and lead to implementable results. Completed DATs help identify gaps in study planning that need to be addressed with funding and technical partnerships before a study is finalized or initiated.

Abstract:
Since the deployment of IP multicast remains restricted due to many practical and political issues, researchers have shifted focus to exploiting application-layer multicast for multicast data delivery. Recently there has been considerable interest in applying DHT routing algorithms to application-level multicast. However, early DHT-based multicast protocols are insufficient in addressing a number of technical issues such as heterogeneous capacity of nodes or node churn. In this chapter, the author describes a solution called BAM-Chord (i.e., Bandwidth Adaptive Multicast over Chord) that optimizes the topology of a multicast tree based on node bandwidth. In the proposed solution, node position (i.e., node identifier) on a BAM-Chord ring will be decided based on node bandwidth capacity such that it can build a wide and balanced multicast tree rooted at the source node. As a result, BAM-Chord protocol can utilize network resources of every node to reduce the depth of the multicast tree and take advantages of DHTs in maintaining the multicast tree.

Abstract:
Clinical work as a psychoanalyst working with adults and children directly informed Fonagy’s concern with mentalizing, which grew out of technical innovations in ‘developmental help’ offered at the Anna Freud Centre. In turn, the theory developed by Fonagy and colleagues fed into the emergence of mentalization-based therapy (MBT) as a treatment modality. Initially, in the 1990s, the target of this intervention was patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, MBT has subsequently been used with patients facing a variety of mental health symptoms, including common symptoms like anxiety and depression. This chapter will describe the development of MBT over time, including variants such as dynamic interpersonal therapy (DIT). We will also consider some remaining questions about MBT, including the potential for MBT to harm some groups of patients.

Abstract:
As more projects require the specialized technical skills of those who work in virtual environments due to dispersed geographic locations, project managers of these distributed virtual teams (DVT) must gain insight into achieving project success amongst team members who hold varying operational and world perspectives. When organizational managers decide to implement virtual teams (VT), can they develop strategies to overcome the lack of social interaction, cultural differences, and preconceived notions that can hinder the development of a collaborative and cohesive team? In addition, leading DVTs in a manner that encourages collaboration, diversity, competency building, open communication, and overcoming feelings of isolation must be met in this technology-based environment. This chapter addresses the dilemma of managers in which they must have a clear understanding of what communication and relationship-building techniques and management systems are best suited.

Abstract:
Despite many advances in the field of hydroinformatics, the policy and decision-making world is unable to use these highly technical decision support systems (DSSs) because there has been an undue emphasis on the technological aspects. The historical analysis of hydroinformatics concepts and modelling shows that the technical aspects have been incorporated far better than the social aspects. Hence, there have been calls for the development of ‘socio-technical’ DSSs. However, far greater effort is required to incorporate social and political sciences into the domain of DSSs. The goal of this chapter is to elaborate on the illusive interface between science and water policy within the context of DSSs. It is an attempt to address one main question: how to link or find an interface between policy (institutional matters) and science (technical and natural environment aspects). To achieve this goal, a new paradigm for the DSS modelling approach has been envisaged based on combining multiple theoretical and analytical frameworks into a single methodological framework to attain a linkage between science and policy-making. The integrated methodological framework comprises of: (1) two ‘conceptual’ frameworks: (a) decision-making perspectives and (b) IWRM interface frameworks; (2) analytical frameworks: (a) DPSIR socio-technical assessment and (b) institutional analysis (IA) frameworks; (3) core engine of the DSS consisting of coupled decision support tools (DST) such as process, planning and evaluation models; and (4) a stakeholder participation interface framework consisting of (a(a multi-windowed dynamic cyber stakeholder interface (MDCSI) system and (b) DSS performance assessment (uncertainty and risk analysis) tools, within a shell of a graphical user interface (GUI). From experience, it can be concluded that DSSs are not just about software packages but they are a participatory communication platform for an interactive multi-stakeholder decision-making process. The required science-policy interface can be achieved by using a unique analytical approach in which technical, policy and institutional frameworks are combined within a DSS platform with an output framework, the MDCSI system, that facilitate policy dialogue by having a dynamic and interactive policy interface which can be linked to other technical and non-technical systems. DSSs should be integrated with institutional and socio-political frameworks to help attain both financial and institutional sustainability.

Abstract:
Albeit, online shopping has grown much recently, users' rate of satisfaction has declined due to the ineffective design of online shopping websites. Thus, the companies involved are craving for well-designed websites. Effective website design involves decision making and thus this paper considers Quality Function Deployment (QFD) as it is a strong decision-making tool. However, QFD uses crisp scoring approach that generates uncertainty and vagueness resulting in impreciseness and inconsistency in results. The issue can be addressed using fuzzy integration. QFD involves prioritization of Customer Needs (CNs) and Technical Requirements (TRs). However, the paper focuses on only CNs prioritization. Also, the existing software's lack the indispensable fuzzy support feature to handle the uncertainty and vagueness. Thus, the paper presents a novel fuzzy integrated customer needs prioritization software tool. The tool is built using Visual Basic Dot Net (VB.Net) and MS-Access. A real-life example is presented to demonstrate the viability of the software tool.

Abstract:
The technical and ethical issues of these systems proved to be their weak point. Systems that have no central point of control and distribute functions among all users seem better fit for sharing and distributing content. A solution has been proposed in the form of distributed hashtables (DHTs). This article proposes an alternative architecture for content distribution based on a new DHT routing scheme. The proposed architecture is well structured and self-organized in such a way as to be fault-tolerant and highly efficient. It provides users with content distribution and discovery capabilities on top of an overlay network. The novelty of our proposed architecture lies in its routing table which is maintained by each node and is of constant size, as opposed to other algorithms that are proportional to the network’s size (usually O(logN)). All operations in our architecture are of O(logbN) steps (entry, publishing, and lookups) and degrade gracefully as up-to-date information of the routing table decreases due to numerous node failures.

Full text
Abstract:
E-business is far more about strategy than technology (Raisinghani & Schkade, 2001). An effective e-business strategy is concerned with e-business multidimensional characteristics associated with different levels, parties, elements, and growth pattern features (Bakry & Bakry, 2001). In the process, the strategy must incorporate the effects of the instant and global Internet communication mechanism on the company’s business management architecture. The global reach and interconnectivity of the Internet have spawned new models of e-business strategy and radically transformed existing ones (Pant & Ravichandran, 2001). Indeed, what distinguishes many of the dot-coms is not their new technical power, but the radical new business models (Hamel, 2000). Aided by such innovative e-business models, managers will be able to identify the major decision factors involved in their business strategies and generate strategies that would improve their overall performance and profitability. In the current context, four essential perspectives are identified to be associated with an e-business strategy: financial, customer, internal processes, and learning and growth. These four perspectives were first introduced in early 1990s as the balanced scorecard concept (BSC) (Kaplan & Norton, 1992). Because the BSC methodology explicitly focuses on links among business decisions and outcomes, it is intended to guide strategy development, implementation, and provide reliable feedback for management control and performance evaluation. This BSC rationale is thereby appealing to managers who face new challenges in the current turbulent e-business climate. The real challenge is to determine how the BSC can be successfully applied in the context of e-business’s constantly changing environment of interdependencies (Hasan & Tibbits, 2000). E-business introduces new business objectives and strategies and the old measures of success may no longer apply. It is anticipated that the departure from the original BSC for a strategic ebusiness management framework would be more radical than the existing BSC adaptations (e.g., Martinson’s balanced IS scorecard; Martinsons, Davison, & Tse, 1999).

Abstract:
Research has highlighted Digital Games (DG)’ capacity to enhance skill and abilities through their persuasiveness and motivational appeal, which can support immersive, situated and user-centered experiences. DG development remains a challenge both in terms of costs and of the diverse range of advanced, multi-disciplinary expertise required to develop a DG. Developing DGs for such a complex domain as Mechanical Engineering (ME) to better equip engineering students to practice at the intersection of complex systems increases this challenge. An alternative to decrease costs is to capitalize on existing DGs. The paper analyzes opportunities for DG adaptation, in order to enable the reengineer of existing games to fit specific purposes and support knowledge transfer. The authors build upon current research and practices to construct an approach for adapting DG content. Two case studies are presented as a proof of concept to exemplify the different levels of the digital game reengineering process.

Abstract:
This paper presents formulations that enable the vision-based measurement of displacement and strain fields extensively in a probabilistic manner. The proposed formulations are built on the dot centroid tracking (DCT) method by digital cameras, which measures the darkness of each pixel in gray scale, identify dots marked on a specimen, derives dot centroids using pixel darkness information and derives displacement and strain fields by tracking the centroids and interpolating the nodal displacements and strains. Under the Gaussian assumption, the proposed formulations analytically propagate the standard deviation of uncertainty in darkness measurement and estimate that in the displacement and strain field measurement. As the first step, the formulations were completed for continuous field measurement with triangular elements. Most advantageously, the proposed formulations allow discussion on measurement error bounds, which also enables the quantitative comparison of the DCT method to the other measurement techniques. For numerical validation, standard deviations of nodal displacements and strains estimated from the known darkness uncertainty were compared to those derived from large samples created with the same darkness uncertainty. The results show the validity of the proposed formulations and their potential in measurement with reliability.

In ASME 2016 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2016-60194.

Full text
Abstract:
A new spatial and temporal incremental harmonic balanced (STIHB) method is developed for obtaining steady-state responses of a one-dimensional continuous system. In the STIHB method, Galerkin procedure for a governing partial differential equation (PDE) in the spatial coordinate to obtain a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and the harmonic balance procedure for the set of ODEs in the temporal coordinate to obtain the harmonic balanced residual are combined to be Galerkin procedures for the PDE in the spatial and temporal coordinates to simultaneously obtain the spatial and temporal harmonic balanced residual, and integrations in Galerkin procedures are replaced by the fast discrete sine transform (DST) or fast discrete cosine transform (DCT) in the spatial coordinate and the fast Fouriour transform (FFT) in the temporal coordinate, which is referred to as a DST-FFT or DCT-FFT procedure. The harmonic balanced residual for an arbitrary second-order PDE can be automatically and efficiently obtained by a computer program when the expression of the PDE is given, where numbers of basis functions in the spatial and temporal coordinates can be arbitrarily selected and no more extra derivations are needed. There are two versions of the STIHB method. In the simple version, the DST-FFT or DCT-FFT procedure to calculate the harmonic balanced residual and Broyden’s method that is a quasi-Newton method are combined to find solutions that make the residual vanish, which can be used to construct steady-state solutions of the PDE. In the complex version, the exact Jacobian matrix is derived and used in Newton-Raphson method to achieve faster convergence. While its derivation is complex, the exact Jacobian matrix for the arbitrary PDE can be automatically and efficiently obtained by following a calculation routine when the linearized expression of the PDE is given, and it can be easily implemented by a computer program. The exact Jacobian matrix can also be used to study stability of steady-state responses, where no more extra derivations are needed. The STIHB method is demonstrated by studying the transverse vibration of a string with geometric nonlinearity; its frequency-response curves with weak and strong nonlinearities and different numbers of trial functions are calculated, and stability of solutions on the curves is studied.

Abstract:
This paper presents the speed enhancement of displacement and strain field measurement using graphics processing unit (GPU) towards real-time field measurement. The displacement and strain field measurement technique to be enhanced is a vision-based dot centroid tracking (DCT) method which measures the darkness of each pixel in gray scale, identifies dots marked on a specimen, derives dot centroids using pixel darkness information and derives displacement and strain fields by tracking the centroids and deriving and interpolating the nodal displacements and strains. The proposed enhancement begins by finding parallel processes in both the image analysis phase and the field estimation phase. The centroid derivation and tracking of marked dots in the image analysis phase are computed independently for each marked dot whereas the derivation, interpolation and estimation of the displacement and strain field are computed parallel as well with respect to the interpolated points which covers the evaluated field. The proposed enhancement then accelerates the displacement and strain field estimation by storing the pixel and dot information as a predefined index look-up table and a new measurement in a shared buffer in the GPU’s shared memory. The use of the shared buffer with a look-up table avoids the duplicated memory allocation and contributes to not only speed but also memory usage. Numerical examples have first investigated the validity and performance of the proposed enhancement through parametric studies. A comparison with field measurement using only a central processing unit (CPU) shows that the proposed enhancement gains at least 10 times speedup when the same accuracy is attained. The proposed approach was then applied to the displacement and strain field measurement of a rail in a three-point bending test under relatively fast periodic loadings, and its ability to capture real-time behavior has been demonstrated.

Abstract:
The discrete Fourier transform in Cartesian coordinates has proven to be invaluable in many disciplines. However, in application such as photoacoustics and tomography, a discrete 2D-Fourier transform in polar coordinates is needed. In this paper, a discrete 2D-Fourier transform in polar coordinates is presented. It is shown that numerical implementation is best achieved by interpreting the transform as a 1D-discrete Fourier transform (DFT), a 1D-discrete Hankel transform (DHT) and a 1D-discrete inverse transform (IDFT) in sequence. The transform is tested by numerical simulations with respect to accuracy and precision for computation of the continuous 2D transform at specific discrete points. It was found that both the forward and inverse transform showed good accuracy to approximate the continuous Fourier transform. Moreover, good precision results were obtained, which indicate that the proposed transform itself does not add much error.

Abstract:
For aero-engines, the throttle command is often changed dramatically, which will perturb the control error (defined as actual rotor speed minus desired rotor speed) of the primary set-point controller. When the perturbation is amplified by the gain, the controller will output unreasonable values of control variables, i.e. the mass of fuel flow, and cause abnormal engine operation. For this reason, limit protection controllers are applied to constrain the controlled variables at a safe level. Besides, the transient control modes are required to provide smooth, stall free operation of the engine. The schedule-based approach, which is the traditional transient control mode, is easy to implement but the performance of acceleration and deceleration will suffer from degradation or manufacturing errors. With the development of digital control system, N-dot control mode has been adopted in some modern aero-engines, which focuses on rotor acceleration rather than rotor speed. To some extent, this method can overcome the obstacles of the schedule-based approach. In terms of N-dot control mode, there are two main methods: direct control and indirect control. The former one suggests using a differentiator to get the actual N-dot value, then minus it by the desired N-dot value to get the error of N-dot. When the error is reduced to zero by a controller, the actual N-dot value follows the desired N-dot value. The latter one suggests inputting the desired N-dot value to an integrator for a rotor speed value, which essentially transforms the N-dot command to the speed command. With this transformation, the familiar set-point controller can be used to control the engine following the N-dot command indirectly. This paper presents implementation schemes of the two types of N-dot control, and focuses on a comparative study of them. To avoid integral windup issue when the indirect method switches controllers, such as from N-dot controller to set-point controller, we have introduced a logic to determine whether the integrator is operational. This design allows flexible switchings. After frequency domain analysis, we find out that the essential difference between the two schemes lies in the magnitude of crossing frequency. The direct N-dot control, with a higher crossing frequency, has faster responses but is sensitive to noise. While the indirect N-dot control, with a lower crossing frequency, has slower responses but can suppress noise. When the dynamic nature of sensor and actuator is considered, the direct N-dot control with a higher crossing frequency may cause the close-loop system unstable. Using a reliable aero-engine mathematical model, we designed a set of simulations to test the two N-dot schemes. The simulation results showed that the direct N-dot control performed better than the indirect one under ideal situation. When noise or dynamic nature of sensor and actuator was taken into consideration, however, the indirect N-dot control was more robust, which confirmed the analysis above.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper investigates primarily the geometrical meaning of the determinant of the Jacobian (det j) of the three connector lines of a planar in-parallel platform device using reciprocity. A remarkably simple result is deduced : The maximum value of det j namely, det jm is simply one-half of the sum of the lengths of the sides of the moving triangular platform. Further, this result is shown to be independent of the location of the fixed pivots in the base. A dimensionless ratio λ = |det j| / det jm is defined as the quality index (0 ≤ λ ≤ 1) and it is proposed here to use it to measure “closeness” to a singularity. An example which determines the optimal design by comparing different shaped moving platforms having the same det jm is given and demonstrates that the optimal shape is in fact an equilateral triangle.
