The growth of knowledge in an institution is highly determined by the cultural system and environment, in which the knowledge is produced, disseminated and appropriated. Knowledge, which is substantially demanded for the continuation of the institution, can only be systematically generated in a good social and cultural environment. Yet, in many cases, there is a kind of “black box” that structurally impedes the production of knowledge, because of incapability of the system in constructing a collective “scientific culture”. Application and efficiency of bio-coagulants for petroleum wastewater biocoagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation (bioclarification) are still confined to laboratory proof-of-concept practice. The scale-up process design of bio-clarified water recovery from petroleum wastewater has been a major research lacuna. This paper presents ASPEN Base Case Scale-Up Simulation (BCSUS) using optimum laboratory experimental data and techno-economic predictive models for bioclarified water production from petroleum wastewater. The BCSUS, process design, and economics were performed in the ASPEN Batch Pr

I argue rather that online misinformation is the effect of an informational climate promoted by user micro-behaviours such as liking, sharing, and posting. Misinformation online is explained as the effect of an informational environment saturated with and shaped by techno-images in which most users act automatically under the constant assault of stirred emotions, a state resembling wh

Based on an interpretation of the film “Gattaca” in the light of the problem of access to space, the paper opposes two techno-utopian regimes - cosmopolitics and biopolitics. Cosmopolitics assumes an equality of access to space for all beings, while biopolitics links bodily restrictions to the problem of regravitation. Regravitation is the biopolitical practice aimed at preserving the “terrestrial” conditions of the body's existence.

Abstract:
Technologies can have harmful effects on users’ psychological health, on society, and on the environment. “Technology traps” arise when users and societies become stuck with technologies and the harmful consequences produced by these technologies. In this paper, the authors describe five technology traps: incompetence, self-miscontrol, misbehavior, techno-centrism, and environmental degradation. The authors then examine the share of ethical responsibility for these traps among end-users, businesses, and government.
