Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims to establish a framework for evaluating technological innovation and to emphasize the important influence of path dependence on technological innovation. The fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) method is used to identify causal relationships among factors that influence technological innovation, and a FCM structural diagram for evaluating enterprise technological innovation is described. Meanwhile, a fuzzy feedback system for the evaluation of technological innovation, integrated with a nonlinear Hebbian learning algorithm, is established; dependence on expert opinions may be avoided through learning and practice using the cognitive map. Finally, using a computer software platform, a dynamic simulation of any complex index system can be realized. From this simulation, stable conditions can provide path references by which an enterprise engaging in technological innovation can improve the integrative efficiency and the overall effect of any realistic technological innovation activity.

Abstract:
The fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) has been defined as a promising way to avoid road transport greenhouse emissions, but nowadays, they are not commercially available. However, few studies have attempted to monitor the global scientific research and technological profile of FCEVs. For this reason, scientific research and technological development in the field of FCEV from 1999 to 2019 have been researched using bibliometric and patent data analysis, including network analysis. Based on reports, the current status indicates that FCEV research topics have reached maturity. In addition, the analysis reveals other important findings: (1) The USA is the most productive in science and patent jurisdiction; (2) both Chinese universities and their authors are the most productive in science; however, technological development is led by Japanese car manufacturers; (3) in scientific research, collaboration is located within the tri-polar world (North America–Europe–Asia-Pacific); nonetheless, technological development is isolated to collaborations between companies of the same automotive group; (4) science is currently directing its efforts towards hydrogen production and storage, energy management systems related to battery and hydrogen energy, Life Cycle Assessment, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The technological development focuses on technologies related to electrically propelled vehicles; (5) the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and SAE Technical Papers are the two most important sources of knowledge diffusion. This study concludes by outlining the knowledge map and directions for further research.

The field of ICT offers significant potential for Philippine schools. The immediate challenge for ICT institutions is to elevate their standards to meet international benchmarks and ensure graduates achieve relevant certifications. Another critical task is establishing global connections with industry to produce professionals who meet market demands. ICT presents opportunities for Philippine technological schools to explore new horizons. The internet has enabled schools to share libraries, educational resources, and even faculty with institutions worldwide. In research, the many-to-many nature of the internet has greatly enhanced collaborative efforts. ICT also allows Philippine technological schools to focus on software research and development, a less resource-intensive field where Filipino engineers can excel competitively. Furthermore, computers and networks have demonstrated their effectiveness in enhancing teaching and learning processes, paving the way for improved educational outcomes.

Abstract:
Introduction. The digital transformation of the educational space of a pedagogical university provides great opportunities for improving the quality of education and at the same time requires a radical change in methodological approaches to the organization of training; search, development, and application of new technological solutions and tools. The purpose of this article is to search for and analyze new tools and technologies for the digital transformation of the modern educational space. A fundamentally new approach is laid in the design of the educational and scientific electronic service "Pedagogical map of the world". The electronic scientific and educational service of the new generation "Pedagogical map of the world" makes it possible not only to broadcast but also to generate new knowledge, as well as to form readiness for transferring it to other social and humanitarian subject fields of science. Materials and methods. In the course of the study of the effectiveness of the electronic resource "Pedagogical map of the world" as a tool for the digital transformation of pedagogical education, a survey was conducted among students (1837 students) and scientific and pedagogical workers (211 employees) of higher education institutions in various regions of the Russian Federation. Results. The study among the university students aimed at determining the level of students' satisfaction with the functionality of the electronic service showed that a significant number of respondents (90.7 %) noted a positive trend in their attitude towards the study of the historical and pedagogical space when using the electronic service. The positive dynamics affected not only classroom studies but also the area of students' independent work and their personal development. A survey among the professional community also confirmed the effectiveness of the electronic resource. Discussion and conclusion. The modern electronic service "Pedagogical map of the world" incorporates a database, a "live textbook", an analytical simulator, and social networks. The possibilities of the "Pedagogical map of the world" include "Sets of tasks", developed on the basis of a four-dimensional model of a set of exercises for developing historical and pedagogical space.

Abstract:
A risk evaluation model for IT projects using fuzzy inference is proposed. The knowledge base for fuzzy processes is built using a causal and cognitive map of risks. This map was specially developed for IT projects and takes into account the typical lifecycle and the risk taxonomy created by the Software Engineering Institute. The model was used to compute the technological risk of an e-testing project. This project was positioned on the middle level of the risk map, implying that the probability of encountering technological difficulties depends on the number of technologies used and their market maturity. A software system for validating the model was also developed.

Abstract:
With increasing challenges from international competition and domestic demands for a technologically literate workforce, pressure is growing on the educational system to produce students that are literate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Integrative STEM education utilizes design-based pedagogical approaches to teach science/math content and practices concurrently with technology/engineering content and practices (Wells & Ernst, 2012, para. 2). The discipline of technology education has traditionally implemented design-based pedagogical approaches. However, the discipline has not demonstrated through empirical research that its existence and pedagogies are beneficial to student learning and cognition (Lewis, 1999, 2006; Petrina, 1998; Wells, 2008, 2010; Zuga, 1994, 1997, 2001).<br />The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the technological design-based approach to teaching biotechnology literacy supports students\' connections of science and technology concepts. Grounded in Ausubel\'s (1968) theory on meaningful learning and Novak\'s (1980) advanced organizer of concept mapping, this study examined evidence of high school students\' cognitive structural change throughout the technological design-based approach to instruction. At three key intervals throughout the technological design process, students developed concept maps to document their understanding of the biology and technology concepts presented within the instructional materials. Data for this study included the students\' constructed concept maps. To analyze the concept maps, the researcher used Hay et al.\'s (2008) three-method analysis for measuring the quality of students\' learning, and a qualitative analysis.<br />Data analysis across all four methods indicated that all participants experienced a varying degree of growth in biology, technology, and integrative concepts and connections. Collectively this study supports the notion that the technological design-based approach to instruction does indeed (1) encourage meaningful learning, and (2) increase students\' use of higher order thinking indicated by their abilities to demonstrate their use of schematic and strategic knowledge within their concept maps. The results of this study have direct implications within the areas of Technology Education, Science Education, classroom practice, and concept mapping. The discussion and implications suggest the need to expand the research conducted within this study, and to improve the methods for concept mapping analysis.<br>Ph. D.

3. The purpose of the study is to investigate the teachers' views and thoughts on technology as well as an understanding of how teachers teach the school subject technology for grades 4-6. This is done by interviewing teachers who teach in the subject of technology. The interviews address the questions: 1. What are the teachers' views and thoughts about technology? 2. What thoughts about teaching in the subject of technology have teachers? 3. What are the teachers’ reflections on the technical subject getting your own timetable? The interviews show that most teachers who participated in the survey find that there should be a common definition of technology. The study also shows that most teachers think it is best to teach theory and practice but that there is a lack of resources for the subject of technology that makes it impossible to complete the theory of variation theory.

Abstract:
The planning and management of technology development are strategic issues for organizations that wish to perform R&D procedures. Technology Plans (TP) can represent a significant challenge to the planning efforts of organizations. The most common problems are flaws in project forecasting, whether they are new products, services or processes.. To perform this study, a unit analysis was selected for the survey and a data collection protocol was developed. For the first phase of this work (phase 1) the protocol was applied considering the construction methodology of the current Technology Plan, which consists of periodic meetings with an agenda for technology requirements and other general department issues. Two types of meetings were devised. The first one is held every two months, with the participation of those involved in the implementation of the plan and the second one is held in annual meetings of the master plan with the participation of the Department Manager. For the second phase (phase 2), the T-Plan methodology was considered and applied to the construction of the Technology Map. The factors investigated, were organized in dimensions (planning, development and implementation) that have been segmented into search variables (viability, commitment, communication, drivers, prioritization, monitoring guidelines, learning, revalidation, application and replication) and, depending on the results, the critical analysis classified them as leveraging or challenging. Complementing that analysis, the process of drafting the search variables assessed the TP based on two attributes: quality and satisfaction. These two have been assessed according to the perception of respondents in the two phases of the study. The Quality attribute was graphically represented in 4 quadrants, aiming to indicate presence and formality, thus demonstrating the existence of the search variable. The results of the Satisfaction attribute were statistically assessed considering the mean value and standard deviation between the current condition and the desired condition. This distance featured the opportunities for change. The unit analysis was the Center for Hydrogen Fuel Cell - CCCH, a department of energy and nuclear research Institute in Brazil, and the analysis consisted of a TP which had been previously prepared in meetings and had managers and researchers of the aforementioned department as sources of information. In Phase 1 (current process) and in phase 2, a T-Plan methodology was applied to the elaboration of the TP. From the analysis of the results came up: for phase 1, the following factors were identified as Challenging: Drivers and Application; as Potential Challenging factors: Viability, Prioritization, Monitoring, Learning and Revalidation; as Potential Leveraging factors: Replication; and as Leveraging factors: Commitment and Communication. For phase 2 all the factors were classified as Leveraging, namely: Viability, Commitment, Communication, Prioritization, Monitoring Guidelines, Learning, Revalidation, Application and Replication. This study allowed us to conclude that by applying the T-Plan methodology there is a significant change in the Leveraging and Challenging factors assessment when the two methodologies are applied to the elaboration of the TP studied. Yet, as a result of phase 2, the Map of Technology Routes of the CCCH was built considering a horizon of 10 years comprising the following technology routes: Route for preparation of materials and major components of the module; Route starting from the demand of the market reaching products; Route starting from technology development to reach state-of-the-art products; Route that considers the development of materials for products and that meet internal and external drivers. These results allow us to conclude from the investigated case that the application of the T-Plan methodology is both viable and even recommended in the context of technology plans for research units of Public Research Institutions.

Halden, Grace. "'If this is a man' : technological development and human disappearance in US Sf since 1945." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2014. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/93/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how literal and figurative disappearance can be said to have occurred through certain technological developments after World War II. This study investigates key concepts of the human condition alongside notions of disappearance, underpinned by the contextual framework of Primo Levi’s pivotal question and statement: ‘if this is a Man’. As a survivor of Auschwitz, Levi reflected on threats to the human through Holocaust testimony in If This is a Man (1947) and through his science fiction (sf) which explored technological perils after 1945. Like Levi, my work focuses on the ways in which ‘Man’ can be challenged and undermined. While my work uses a similar approach, it goes further by applying ideas of disappearance and by exploring technologies outside Levi’s remit and within US sf. To look at the concept of human replacement and destruction, I build on the philosophy of Jean Baudrillard who argued that humanity is at risk of figuratively ‘disappearing’ through a blurring of boundaries between the real and the artificial. Baudrillard speaks of losing traditional concepts of the human condition through simulacra and technological dominance. I combine Baudrillard’s idea of disappearance with Levi’s concerns over technological threats to the human. In this thesis, I speak of literal disappearance as involving death (especially to the collective through genocide or extinction) and figurative disappearance through an alteration of the traditional concept of what it means to be human. Through representative sf texts, I explore how many writers have portrayed the human as under pressure through certain technological advancements especially after World War II. My thesis is arranged thematically, tracing three key technological epochs within a chronological structure. The themes for the three parts are intended to highlight some key concerns emerging from sf which relate to the human condition and disappearance, such as the threat of the nuclear, the emergence of cybernetics, and the development of artificial intelligence. I use these historic events to reflect on how US sf explores technological apocalyptic themes.

This has been informed by the systems of innovation approach as well as broader academic perspectives on the nature of innovation and as such the publications are located in the field of innovation studies and in particular the sub-community of scholars that concern themselves with defence technological innovation. In the thesis, I contend that – taken together – the publications make three contributions to knowledge. First, the publications contribute to our understanding of what I term the “defence innovation system”. This illuminates an important corner ignored by most scholars of innovation systems and one that has received too little attention given the role that defence R&D and procurement has played as a stimulus to many significant technological innovations as well as its many implications for international security and society. The defence innovation system has often resisted analysis not least because of the limitations of publicly available information. My publications show recognition of the importance of this topic and shed light on the dynamics of defence technological innovation. Second, the publications contribute to our understanding of the organisations and relationships that underpin the defence innovation system and their response to changes in their operating environment since the end of the Cold War. My focus on organisation-level case studies of defence firms and government defence research establishments is in contrast to most of the academic work in this field that has been preoccupied with national or industry level structure and trends. A recurring theme in my publications, explicitly and implicitly, has been the co-evolutionary character of change in the defence innovation system and the changing relationship between government and defence industrial firms. Third, I examine changes in the boundaries of the system by introducing a transnational dimension to the analysis of defence technological innovation and in doing so my publications have drawn attention to the need to examine transnational linkages between nationally-located systems.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Urban Systems Lab (USL) Dataviz Platform is an interactive web application to visualize Social, Ecological, and Technological Systems (SETS). This platform is being used to encourage participatory processes, produce new knowledge, and facilitate collaborative analysis within nine Urban Resilience to Weather-related Extremes (UREx) Sustainability Research Network cities. It allows seamless shifts across contexts, scales, and perspectives for analysis within the SETS framework. How is digital space conceptualized for urban analysis and interventions? What is the capacity for reciprocal relationships between digital and physical space? How do we visually understand urban systems and complex spatial relationships? This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the application stack and the different representational categories embedded in the Dataviz Platform. Offering a common visual language to various stakeholders, we explore new ground as we believe it has the potential to change how we think about, plan, and design our cities. From its onset in early 2020, the Covid-19 (hereafter Covid) crisis has uncovered both the insecurity about new technologies and their flexibility. In this chapter, we will attempt to provide a non-exhaustive map of the field of interpreting technology in different settings, of research on these new technologies and research using them. Tools and resources that enhance an interpreter’s performance will also be discussed as part of technological evolution, while the final question to be answered is whether “interpreters [can] survive in an AI-dominated world” (Downie 2020). This contribution wants to be a call to do more large-scale research and to inform future interpreters better about technological development and opportunities in the classroom.

Abstract:
AbstractHash functions are one-way functions that map arbitrary-length input to fixed-length output. Moreover, they have many cryptographic applications, such as integrity checks, password storage, and signatures. Cryptographic hash functions have some additional properties that can be formulated as hard problems: pre-image resistance, second pre-image resistance, and collision resistance. A significant technological development in this area is unlikely. Standardized hash functions are considered secure, and open-source implementations can be used at no cost. To conclude, the security properties required from hash functions depend on the intended purpose.

Abstract This introductory chapter sets out the key themes and arguments of the book and provides a road map for the remaining chapters. It outlines the book’s ambition to contribute to the sociological and criminological literature on technological infrastructures, borders and specific visions of Europe by portraying what we call the biobordering processes at work in the EU. Relying on what Misa and Schot, reflecting on technological infrastructures, have called the ‘hidden integration’ and ‘hidden fragmentation’ of Europe, the transnational exchange of forensic DNA data organized through the Prüm system serves as an exemplary case through which to explore the different logics of biobordering dynamics at work across the European Union. We complement an EU-level analysis with country case analysis of modes of biobordering that emphasize the legal, scientific, technical, political and ethical dimensions related to the governance and uses of biometric technologies both at a national level and in a transnational collaboration.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents a way to begin mapping Touch in everyday networked practices by examining how Touch is culturally significant. Extending from the previous chapter, networked Touch is first identified as embodied and multimodal. The five fundamentals of the cultural mode of Touch—identified as connection, engagement, contiguity, differentiation and positioning—are then located for how they are culturally significant in everyday relationships. Finally, acknowledging networked social relationships as embodied and multimodal, I argue that visual social relationships can be understood as practices of Touch and mapped through close examination of the fundamentals of Touch. Furthermore, the fundamentals (as a map) could potentially be used to investigate the technological self beyond visual social relationships.

Abstract:
Designing a parameter mapping sonification (PMSon) involves defining a mapping function that determines how data variables affect audio signal parameters. The mapping function is represented using mathematical notation and/or characterized in terms of scaling, transfer function and polarity; both approaches manifest in software platforms for PMSon design. Math notation is not always directly relatable to complex design requirements, and simple characterizations lack generality and may be ambiguous - both issues hamper mapping function design, conceptualization, and dissemination. We seek to address them through knowledge transfer from audio mixing, a mature craft with strong parallels to PMSon design. For mixing, it was a versatile and universally applicable technological platform (the multitrack mixer) that supported the development of mixing technique, concepts, and recent formalizations thereof, laying the foundation for modern audio production. We posit that a PMSon design platform that adapts the essential elements of the mixer can similarly reinforce PMSon by supporting a mapping function representation directly tied to the design process. We define the correspondence between mixing and PMSon design, outline specifics of mixer functionality adaptation, and demonstrate the resulting capabilities with our proof-of-principle platform Mix-N-Map that is currently pending user testing. We believe a general PMSon framework explicitly rooted in audio mixing can potentially advance theory and practice to the benefit of PMSon designers and users alike.

Abstract:
While technical breakthroughs, including the utilization of AI tools, have continuously advanced filmmaking over the years, the leveraging of such tools in the context of creativity and sustainable development has remained elusive and role of AI in fostering sustainable practices aligned with the SDGs remains under-researched. This paper will explore how the AI driven innovations in the film industry have led to the enhancement in creativity and efficacy of the films produced lately while promoting sustainable practices that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AI holds a promising creative potential in a combination of technological advancements in filmmaking such as automated scriptwriting, virtual production, and visual effects, which are being increasingly explored. However, these advancements are not free from challenges and there are significant concerns over ethics in algorithmic biases as well as risk of diminishing human creativity. In particular, as AI tools become widely adaptable to filmmakers, characterization of how AI can be used to simultaneously enhance creative practices and align optimize resource allocation with sustainable development outcomes is required. As the industry grapples with the economic and environmental challenges, the relevance of incorporating smart utilization of AI to serve the SDGs in filmmaking warrants such an investigation. We propose how AI can be used not just as a technical tool but also as an accessible resource for filmmakers that guides them towards creative practices to create culturally refined stories, augmented representation and inclusivity in global cinema during film production. The study undertakes a systematic literature review across interdisciplinary findings to map the theoretical foundation and provide robust recommendations and practices relevant to the industry, highlighting AI usage as a tool conducive to sustainable development in filmmaking. This paper aims to tackle the three pillars of AIs ability to be used to support filmmaking practices with powerful sustainability strategies aligned with SDGs. In addition, will investigate a few real case studies of films which have used AI for their production, and we will examine that how AI is transformative for the filmmaking processes and thereby promoting sustainability.

Abstract:
Cost-effective collection and distribution of intersection data are needed to facilitate traffic operations at intersections in the HDV era and particularly, in the prospective era of CAVs. Existing methods are time consuming and costly. Phase I of this research (executed under CCAT Project Nr. 71) developed a cost-effective intersection data collection and distribution device for this purpose. In Phase II of this research, the device prototype was bench tested in Lansing and field tested at Owosso. It was confirmed that the device successfully facilitates SPaT and MAP data collection and dissimulation to mobile devices. These deployments provided evidence that the device provides public agencies a way to drastically reduce the cost of data collection at their intersections. The technological innovation is that the device provided a much simpler and effective way to collect intersection data. Overall, the expectation is that reducing the costs of infrastructure data delivery will ultimately encourage more rapid deployment of infrastructure data sources. That, in turn, is expected to encourage the entire connected intelligent transportation ecosystem to advance when the potential benefits of the system become more widely available. It is anticipated that could be the start of a rapidly expanding deployment on a much larger scale.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study engages with the journey of Dhwani Rural Information Systems, a social enterprise that traces its earliest origins back to 2012. Founded by the duo of Sunandan Madan and Swapnil Aggarwal – engineers by training who met while studying for a postgraduate course at the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) – Dhwani since its inception has been trying to help a range of social sector organizations effectively integrate technology without disrupting the core ways in which these organizations work. Notably, it has been amongst one of the early enterprises in the sector which has taken efforts to understand in-depth the technology-related “pain points” common across organizations, and to bring a degree of standardisation to their solutions. The case builds an appreciation towards the fact that at the core of a successful technology-centric social enterprise, which can offer relevant and affordable digital products and services to the sector, lies building a composite culture that can straddle both the developmental and technological landscapes. Such a culture seeks to combine engineering and consulting skills in equal measure, and seeks to solve problems mindful of the particularities of the developmental sector, while also retaining a service orientation. In particular, the case looks to draw attention to the ideas of hybridity and elasticity that are integral to such a culture and how these have to be sustained against continuous pressures of talent sourcing, compensation, retention, and learning and development. In a short period of time, Dhwani has become a mature set-up with a clear sector-agnostic product and service value proposition to the sector, with a team strength of over 120 people and over 50 projects, and a variety of organizations, including nonprofits, philanthropies, CSR divisions and governments as clients. Therefore, the experiences of the founders and members of the team offer valuable lessons for other like-minded practitioners. At the same time, to researchers in the field of social enterprise the case may provide a more granular view of important aspects of culture-building in emerging social enterprises. The fact that such enterprises have to draw from a talent pool in constant competition with their private sector counterparts imparts added force to the above considerations.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past 50 years the capability of technology to improve surgical care has been realised and while surgical trainees and trainers strive to deliver care and train; the technological ‘solutions’ market continues to expand. However, there remains no coordinated process to assess these technologies. The FOS:TEST Report aimed to (1) define the current, unmet needs in surgical training, (2) assess the current evidence-base of technologies that may be beneficial to training and map these onto both the patient and trainee pathway and (3) make recommendations on the development, assessment, and adoption of novel surgical technologies. The FOS:TEST Commission was formed by the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT), The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) Robotics and Digital Surgery Group and representatives from all trainee specialty associations. Two national datasets provided by Health Education England were used to identify unmet surgical training needs through qualitative analysis against pre-defined coding frameworks. These unmet needs were prioritised at two virtual consensus hackathons and mapped to the patient and trainee pathway and the capabilities in practice (CiPs) framework. The commission received more than 120 evidence submissions from surgeons in training, consultant surgeons and training leaders. Following peer review, 32 were selected that covered a range of innovations. Contributors also highlighted several important key considerations, including the changing pedagogy of surgical training, the ethics and challenges of big data and machine learning, sustainability, and health economics. This summates to 7 Key Recommendations and 51 concluding statements. The FOS:TEST Commission was borne out of what is a pivotal point in the digital transformation of surgical training. Academic expertise and collaboration will be required to evaluate efficacy of any novel training solution. However, this must be coupled with pragmatic assessments of feasibility and cost to ensure that any intervention is scalable for national implementation. Currently, there is no replacement for hands-on operating. However, for future UK and ROI surgeons to stay relevant in a global market, our training methods must adapt. The Future of Surgery: Technology Enhanced Surgical Training Report provides a blueprint for how this can be achieved.

Abstract:
New technological trends, such as digitization, artificial intelligence and robotics, have the power to drastically increase economic output but may also displace workers. In this paper we assess the risk of automation for female and male workers in four Latin American countries Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and El Salvador. Our study is the first to apply a task-based approach with a gender perspective in this region. Our main findings indicate that men are more likely than women to perform tasks linked to the skills of the future, such as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), information and communications technology, management and communication, and creative problem-solving tasks. Women thus have a higher average risk of automation, and 21% of women vs. 19% of men are at high risk (probability of automation greater than 70%). The differential impacts of the new technological trends for women and men must be assessed in order to guide the policy-making process to prepare workers for the future. Action should be taken to prevent digital transformation from worsening existing gender inequalities in the labor market.
