Abstract:
With increasing challenges from international competition and domestic demands for a technologically literate workforce, pressure is growing on the educational system to produce students that are literate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Integrative STEM education utilizes design-based pedagogical approaches to teach science/math content and practices concurrently with technology/engineering content and practices (Wells & Ernst, 2012, para. 2). The discipline of technology education has traditionally implemented design-based pedagogical approaches. However, the discipline has not demonstrated through empirical research that its existence and pedagogies are beneficial to student learning and cognition (Lewis, 1999, 2006; Petrina, 1998; Wells, 2008, 2010; Zuga, 1994, 1997, 2001).<br />The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the technological design-based approach to teaching biotechnology literacy supports students\' connections of science and technology concepts. Grounded in Ausubel\'s (1968) theory on meaningful learning and Novak\'s (1980) advanced organizer of concept mapping, this study examined evidence of high school students\' cognitive structural change throughout the technological design-based approach to instruction. At three key intervals throughout the technological design process, students developed concept maps to document their understanding of the biology and technology concepts presented within the instructional materials. Data for this study included the students\' constructed concept maps. To analyze the concept maps, the researcher used Hay et al.\'s (2008) three-method analysis for measuring the quality of students\' learning, and a qualitative analysis.<br />Data analysis across all four methods indicated that all participants experienced a varying degree of growth in biology, technology, and integrative concepts and connections. Collectively this study supports the notion that the technological design-based approach to instruction does indeed (1) encourage meaningful learning, and (2) increase students\' use of higher order thinking indicated by their abilities to demonstrate their use of schematic and strategic knowledge within their concept maps. The results of this study have direct implications within the areas of Technology Education, Science Education, classroom practice, and concept mapping. The discussion and implications suggest the need to expand the research conducted within this study, and to improve the methods for concept mapping analysis.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
3. The purpose of the study is to investigate the teachers' views and thoughts on technology as well as an understanding of how teachers teach the school subject technology for grades 4-6. This is done by interviewing teachers who teach in the subject of technology. The interviews address the questions: 1. What are the teachers' views and thoughts about technology? 2. What thoughts about teaching in the subject of technology have teachers? 3. What are the teachers’ reflections on the technical subject getting your own timetable? The interviews show that most teachers who participated in the survey find that there should be a common definition of technology. The study also shows that most teachers think it is best to teach theory and practice but that there is a lack of resources for the subject of technology that makes it impossible to complete the theory of variation theory.

Abstract:
The planning and management of technology development are strategic issues for organizations that wish to perform R&D procedures. Technology Plans (TP) can represent a significant challenge to the planning efforts of organizations. The most common problems are flaws in project forecasting, whether they are new products, services or processes.. To perform this study, a unit analysis was selected for the survey and a data collection protocol was developed. For the first phase of this work (phase 1) the protocol was applied considering the construction methodology of the current Technology Plan, which consists of periodic meetings with an agenda for technology requirements and other general department issues. Two types of meetings were devised. The first one is held every two months, with the participation of those involved in the implementation of the plan and the second one is held in annual meetings of the master plan with the participation of the Department Manager. For the second phase (phase 2), the T-Plan methodology was considered and applied to the construction of the Technology Map. The factors investigated, were organized in dimensions (planning, development and implementation) that have been segmented into search variables (viability, commitment, communication, drivers, prioritization, monitoring guidelines, learning, revalidation, application and replication) and, depending on the results, the critical analysis classified them as leveraging or challenging. Complementing that analysis, the process of drafting the search variables assessed the TP based on two attributes: quality and satisfaction. These two have been assessed according to the perception of respondents in the two phases of the study. The Quality attribute was graphically represented in 4 quadrants, aiming to indicate presence and formality, thus demonstrating the existence of the search variable. The results of the Satisfaction attribute were statistically assessed considering the mean value and standard deviation between the current condition and the desired condition. This distance featured the opportunities for change. The unit analysis was the Center for Hydrogen Fuel Cell - CCCH, a department of energy and nuclear research Institute in Brazil, and the analysis consisted of a TP which had been previously prepared in meetings and had managers and researchers of the aforementioned department as sources of information. In Phase 1 (current process) and in phase 2, a T-Plan methodology was applied to the elaboration of the TP. From the analysis of the results came up: for phase 1, the following factors were identified as Challenging: Drivers and Application; as Potential Challenging factors: Viability, Prioritization, Monitoring, Learning and Revalidation; as Potential Leveraging factors: Replication; and as Leveraging factors: Commitment and Communication. For phase 2 all the factors were classified as Leveraging, namely: Viability, Commitment, Communication, Prioritization, Monitoring Guidelines, Learning, Revalidation, Application and Replication. This study allowed us to conclude that by applying the T-Plan methodology there is a significant change in the Leveraging and Challenging factors assessment when the two methodologies are applied to the elaboration of the TP studied. Yet, as a result of phase 2, the Map of Technology Routes of the CCCH was built considering a horizon of 10 years comprising the following technology routes: Route for preparation of materials and major components of the module; Route starting from the demand of the market reaching products; Route starting from technology development to reach state-of-the-art products; Route that considers the development of materials for products and that meet internal and external drivers. These results allow us to conclude from the investigated case that the application of the T-Plan methodology is both viable and even recommended in the context of technology plans for research units of Public Research Institutions.

Halden, Grace. "'If this is a man' : technological development and human disappearance in US Sf since 1945." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2014. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/93/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how literal and figurative disappearance can be said to have occurred through certain technological developments after World War II. This study investigates key concepts of the human condition alongside notions of disappearance, underpinned by the contextual framework of Primo Levi’s pivotal question and statement: ‘if this is a Man’. As a survivor of Auschwitz, Levi reflected on threats to the human through Holocaust testimony in If This is a Man (1947) and through his science fiction (sf) which explored technological perils after 1945. Like Levi, my work focuses on the ways in which ‘Man’ can be challenged and undermined. While my work uses a similar approach, it goes further by applying ideas of disappearance and by exploring technologies outside Levi’s remit and within US sf. To look at the concept of human replacement and destruction, I build on the philosophy of Jean Baudrillard who argued that humanity is at risk of figuratively ‘disappearing’ through a blurring of boundaries between the real and the artificial. Baudrillard speaks of losing traditional concepts of the human condition through simulacra and technological dominance. I combine Baudrillard’s idea of disappearance with Levi’s concerns over technological threats to the human. In this thesis, I speak of literal disappearance as involving death (especially to the collective through genocide or extinction) and figurative disappearance through an alteration of the traditional concept of what it means to be human. Through representative sf texts, I explore how many writers have portrayed the human as under pressure through certain technological advancements especially after World War II. My thesis is arranged thematically, tracing three key technological epochs within a chronological structure. The themes for the three parts are intended to highlight some key concerns emerging from sf which relate to the human condition and disappearance, such as the threat of the nuclear, the emergence of cybernetics, and the development of artificial intelligence. I use these historic events to reflect on how US sf explores technological apocalyptic themes.

Abstract:
The publications submitted for this PhD by Published Work represent the product of a decade long programme of research on the nature of the defence innovation system and the organisations, institutions and relationships that underpin defence technological innovation. This has been informed by the systems of innovation approach as well as broader academic perspectives on the nature of innovation and as such the publications are located in the field of innovation studies and in particular the sub-community of scholars that concern themselves with defence technological innovation. In the thesis, I contend that – taken together – the publications make three contributions to knowledge. First, the publications contribute to our understanding of what I term the “defence innovation system”. This illuminates an important corner ignored by most scholars of innovation systems and one that has received too little attention given the role that defence R&D and procurement has played as a stimulus to many significant technological innovations as well as its many implications for international security and society. The defence innovation system has often resisted analysis not least because of the limitations of publicly available information. My publications show recognition of the importance of this topic and shed light on the dynamics of defence technological innovation. Second, the publications contribute to our understanding of the organisations and relationships that underpin the defence innovation system and their response to changes in their operating environment since the end of the Cold War. My focus on organisation-level case studies of defence firms and government defence research establishments is in contrast to most of the academic work in this field that has been preoccupied with national or industry level structure and trends. A recurring theme in my publications, explicitly and implicitly, has been the co-evolutionary character of change in the defence innovation system and the changing relationship between government and defence industrial firms. Third, I examine changes in the boundaries of the system by introducing a transnational dimension to the analysis of defence technological innovation and in doing so my publications have drawn attention to the need to examine transnational linkages between nationally-located systems.

This essay covers my translation from English to Swedish of chapter seven of Mike Halsey’s The IT support handbook. The source text is pedagogical and easy to read, while also including a lot of jargon due to its broad target group. The purpose is giving easy to read information and instructions. The translation principle chosen is Vermeer and Nord’s skopos theory and instrumental translation. I use Nord’s categories of translation problems and difficulties for discussion. The difficulties suggest that translation students can have reliable linguistic skills but insufficient subject knowledge. The solutions for mainly convention-related and linguistic problems show how the target text has been adapted to its readers, resulting in an instrumental translation. Some cultural references remain in the target text however, since they were already incorporated into the target culture.

"Policy innovation, asymmetric decentralization and local economic development in post-Mao China : case studies of China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park and Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2006. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1929/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Chinese government's economic reforms over the last couple of decades have led to rapid economic growth for the country. However, many empirical studies on the post-Mao China show that the economic transition towards market economy is in large part actually propelled by active local governments, which are encouraged to make policy innovations in order to promote better local economic development. This thesis aims to offer an understanding on how, why and under what circumstances the local governments of post-Mao China - while still controlled by a one-party communist regime- are able to make policy innovations to deal with business operating under market transition conditions. Theoretically, the phenomenon of local policy innovation can be analyzed with a framework involving three dimensions. First, local policy innovation can be seen to take place in order to respond to challenges presented by the changing macro development environments. Second, local policy innovation can be understood as a consequence of changing responsibilities and competencies between central and local governments. Third, local policy innovation may be related to the dynamics of local-central strategic interactions. Empirically, with the contextual approach as its chosen methodology, this theoretical framework is applied to two successful cases of innovation in Jiangsu province within the Yangtze Delta of post-Mao China: Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone (KETZ); and China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park (CSSIP). The history of these two national development zones identifies the former as a case of a 'locally initiated project' while the latter represents an example of 'local implementation of a centrally initiated project'. In terms of types of local-central dynamic interaction, 'state- intention to tolerate', 'ex-post state endorsement', and 'ex-ante state adoption' were seen sequentially in the case of KETZ, while 'marginalizing the local', 'local obedience', and 'local flexibility' operated simultaneously in the case of CSSIP. The thesis concludes that in post-Mao China significant local policy innovations were able to take place when localities encountered structural changes, including China's reengaging with globalization, changing local-central relations, and serious territorial competition. Actions of local policy innovations were ignited by agents, across scales, whose self-interests were highly involved in local economic development in the context of asymmetric decentralization. More specifically, in the post-Mao China context of economic decentralization to the local combined with political centralization under the party, career-minded local officials utilized their decentralized 'economic resources' to strive for more development, which in turn became their 'political capital' with the upper-level government to get themselves promoted.

This thesis is focused on the links between mobile communication and participatory culture and their consequences on the contemporary transformations of social action. To investigate these articulations, we traced as the general objective to understand the inter-relationships between the development of digital media, the phenomenon of convergence and the emergence of participatory society. In order to accomplish this general goal, we take as the object of study two phenomena typical of participatory culture, called by Jenkins (2008) as "corporate convergence" and " alternative convergence". For the first phenomenon, we analyze the soap opera "Viver a Vida", aired by Globo Television Network (2009-2010). For the second, we investigate the digital activism or transmedia activism during the Arab Spring - to study the connections between mobile communication and the emergence of social activism within a participatory society. The discussion begins with the outlining of the changes in media development, focusing on the technological development that operated the transition from fixed to mobile devices. The analysis of the soap opera "Viver a Vida" showed changes in the traditional format of this television genre, establishing up a narrative that develops between television and digital media; while transforming the relationship between consumers and the soap opera, with new forms of watching chapters (which migrate to the computer and mobile devices) and interact with the narrative (the viewer can follow the story as it unfolds on television, complemented by the websites and blogs). As we analyze the digital activism during the Arab Spring, we emphasize its inextricable link with social networks and observe the shifts in practices of political activism enabled by the use of mobile media, by sharing photos and texts via smartphone. The analysis shows that activists can circumvent the censorship imposed on traditional media and provide visibility to events, denouncing crimes through shocking images that expose to the world the atrocities committed by dictatorial governments. Using the same mobile and social resources, dictatorial governments post images and texts that exalt their accomplishments and condemn the actions of the protesters and rebels, waging a battle materialized in texts and images circulating on social networking and giving global dimension to the events. The sharing of images and texts via smartphones highlights new practices established by using the Instagram app, both in terms of resources for processing images, as in the case of the instant posting of photos and text (captions, tags) on platforms and digital social networks. The use of Instagram is changing the production and circulation of texts and images taken by amateur photographers, as it provides image refinement features for smartphones, handled by the application and posted on social networks and platforms. The use of this application is also modifying production practices in the field of photojournalism, being increasingly used by professional photographers from news agencies and image banks, introducing new aesthetics for the photographic production in the press. We demonstrate, therefore, that the ecology of contemporary media move the boundaries between the political and the aesthetic, as mobile communication becomes arena for new forms of social action<br>Doutorado<br>Artes Visuais<br>Doutora em Artes

Abstract:
The objective of the technology assessment (TA) process is to understand problematic and undesirable consequences from the development and application of technology. TA advocates for the engagement of technology experts and stakeholders to understand the effects of technology. However, TA is often criticized that the decision-making process is not transparent - leaving stakeholders wondering if their contributions were heard. Furthermore, the methods have limited capability for conducting tradeoff analysis between the organizational objectives and conflicting stakeholder perspectives that can result in unintended consequences. Finally, these methods are static making it difficult to update and reassess decision alternatives when new information about issues becomes available. This dissertation research addresses these problems by developing a new technology assessment methodology using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (Fuzzy Cognitive TA - FCTA). This novel approach supports both stages of the process: capturing expert and stakeholder perspectives in cognitive maps, and then using FCM for assessment and decision-making. The methodology shows how experts and stakeholders perceive the value or harm of a technology alternative, which stakeholders share the same perspectives, and how these perspectives change over time. The methodology also shows the degree to which expert and stakeholder perspectives are in support or in conflict with the organizational objectives to help avoid the direct and indirect consequences associated with the decision. Finally, the methodology shows how new or changing perspectives by experts and stakeholders affect the outcome of the decision to improve system knowledge. The research applies the FCTA methodology with a real-world Environmental Impact Study conducted by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). BPA is a U.S. federal agency that provides about a third of the electric power and 75 percent of the high-voltage electric transmission in the Pacific Northwest.

Similar to the concept of conceptual, or cognitive maps, they represent organized knowledge and are composed of concepts. These maps were developed in the 1970s by researcher Joseph Novak (1977). The following thesis was build up having as its basis relationship softwares separated by themes and interests, the concept of a tree of related knowledge. This experience proposes the construction of a process of navigation on a three-dimensional environment, using 3D software which will operate as apps with the engine of a video game, which are graphic motors. The data base and the interaction between texts and tasks is made with the use of the MediaWiki platform, an open-source software which maintains the website Wikipedia. The platform for the maps are operated by a software which is like FlashMeeting, used for web conferences, and Mindjet, as well as CMAPS, for the construction of maps, and also, used for the mapping and navigation on the web. Most of them are open-source software. All operating systems in presence or modulation EAD. The conceptual basis is structured within a vision of disruptive education, which launches a new educational model based on maps, as an approach within a multi-screen world, a world of hyper was a hypermodern world, which is based on a culture of the technological age, a renovation of the concepts of culture, now refreshed in the light of new technologies and new networked society.<br>O trabalho proposto é a montar um projeto exploratório funcional que parta da cartografia cognitiva, que é definida como a arte, teoria e técnica de construir mapas do conhecimento, visando com esta cartografia a sua aplicabilidade na estruturação de um conjunto de cursos/saberes da área da Comunicação. Particularly, this essay analyzed how the students entering a course in Computer Sciences mobilize metacognitive strategies while using digital concept maps. Thus, this research intended to answer the following question: To what measure the concept digital maps can become instruments to help the metacognitive development of the students while studying mathematical functions? As a methodology, the presumptions of Didactic Engineering by Artigue (1996) were used. The theoretical panel for research was based on the Theory of Didactical Situations by Brousseau (2008) for the elaboration of the activities, in the studies about metacognition and the metacognitive strategies treated by Flavell (1999), and in the studies of the concept maps by Novak (1984) and Moreira (2006). The activities related to the content of the affine function were developed in a computerized environment with situations chosen that benefited the investigation by the student. The data analysis collected in the experience enabled to state that the use of the digital concept maps together with the Theory of Didactical Situations allowed the students to mobilize metacognitive strategies in the building of these maps. The results indicate that metacognition is used in the creation moments of a concept map, and that, the reflexive and regulatory characteristics that the metacognitive strategies enable the student might influence positively in the learning process<br>Esta tese teve como objetivo analisar se o trabalho cognitivo gerado pela utilização de mapas conceituais alavanca o desenvolvimento de estratégias metacognitivas dos estudantes.

Abstract:
Despite educational directives advocating the integrated use of technology, some staff remain resistant to the adoption of computer-mediated classroom practice. As resistance is sometimes akin to lack of confidence or understanding, this thesis sought to illuminate the nature of work for teachers and students in a digital environment. It reports on a descriptive and interpretive case study on the classroom experiences of teachers and senior secondary school students in two humanities subjects where technology use was integrated with literacy practices for learning (technoliteracy). Findings suggest that there is a role for technology in the learning process and that student learning might be enhanced by constructivist-based, computer-mediated activities. These findings seem to confirm the important role of teacher agency in designing classroom experiences that capitalise on the potential of new technologies of communication for effective student learning. Furthermore, this thesis has synthesised key ideas from constructivism, educational technology and learning theory with study findings to generate a supportive framework that might encourage techno-reluctant teachers to engage productively with technology in meaningful ways. It develops a grounded model for technoliteracy that gains its dynamism from the notion of design. With its related constructs of "teacher-as-designer" of classroom digital learning environment and "students-as-designers" of electronic representations of knowledge, this model suggests a purposeful integration of technology and literacy practices towards a more critical appreciation of subject content. The thesis also offers practical guidelines for applying constructivist principles to promote technoliteracy and a digital learning culture. The evaluative criteria developed from the SOLO Taxonomy and specially designed for analysing the student-created electronic artefacts also offer possibilities for reconceiving the choice of texts, activities and assessment for students of the 21st century. From the theoretical and practical perspectives shaping this study, this thesis could prompt other teachers to imagine new possibilities for digital learning and to pioneer new models for teaching and learning in increasingly borderless classrooms in the knowledge age. It could encourage techno-reluctant staff to engage in computer-mediated learning practices.

If a company gets embroiled in legal disputes for patent infringement, significant losses in time and costs can occur. With the arrival of knowledge-based economy, Companies compete for the Intellectual Property Rights frequently. Occupying the patents of potential technological fields in advance will assists a company in acquiring competitive advantage in the future. As a result, patents play an important role in the marketplace. With the advance of science and technology, the amount of patent grows larger as time goes on. How to manage the considerable patents effectively is currently an important issue. Patent map is the visualization of the results of statistical analysis applied to patent documents. This study proposes a method for constructing patent map and recommending technological vacancy. When companies are formulating research and development strategies, patent map allows them to distinguish the patent similarity and assists them in avoiding developing similar technique. The recommendation function assists companies in assessing whether to occupy technological vacancy in advance for acquiring competitive advantage in the future. One feature of this study is the method of dimension reduction of the terms. In text mining, the sparse matrix generated by the considerable terms usually costs a lot of computational resource. Dimension reduction of the terms will save storage spaces and increase execution efficiency.

To understand the current implementation of mind maps and the learning experiences of students in clinical nursing practice at one technological university, a retrospective and descriptive study was proceeded with past three-years data including the questionnaire of the learning experiences in mind maps, the overall evaluation of clinical nursing practice, students’ reflection in the nursing practice and the final reports of mind maps. A total of 178 questionnaires of learning experiences in mind maps, 61 from two-year program and 117 from four-year program, were collected. Of which 70.2% (125) students had learning experiences of mind maps in clinical practice. Most of mind maps were applied in case studies (29.3%) and reading reports (28%). In the use of teaching strategies, most students perceived that teachers are familiar with the application of mind mapping; teachers use examples to stimulate the direction of thinking; and teachers have introduced classification or induction methods of the concept. The students had made great progress in the analysis of organization (35.6%) and inductive classification (31.7%). Of 73.6% students agreed that mind maps can enhance the logical thinking skills in nursing, 63.2% of the students satisfied the learning outcomes of mind maps. 26.4% of students felt the pressure while learning mind mapping. From “student’s reflection in the nursing practice”, the students suggested a progressive process design which teach the concepts and practice the thinking process before operating the mind maps. It could reduce the pressures from clinical practice and learning new material. For future study, the teacher should plan mind mapping training courses before the clinical nursing practice, integrate it into nursing education step by step, and improve the concepts and software skills of mind maps for teacher and students.

Abstract:
Both, market forces and public systems are unable to provide remote rural communities of developing countries with contextually relevant and appropriate technologies. This is because the number of people and their incomes are too low, to constitute either a market or a political constituency. Consequently, development aid and development projects emerge as the primary means of introducing new technologies to these regions. However developmentalism is heavily inscribed with economic determinism resulting in the conception of technologies that are focused at the level of the nation state and whose primary objective is to increase its productive and consumptive capacity in an attempt to jumpstart economic growth. This results in mass technologies that are inherently violent, ecologically damaging and which restrict individual freedoms. Furthermore, these technologies end up replacing rather than building upon the only resource in which the poor are rich; traditional knowledge and the ability to innovate and contextualize technologies to their own local worlds. How can we disembed the conception of technologies from development aid and build upon the resources of the poor instead of seeking to replace them? How can we create a knowledge network that assists in taking the technological innovations of the poor from concept to market and which protects intellectual property rights and allows follow-on innovation. The emergence of networked computing accompanied by new paradigms of production such as peer to peer and open source along with a rethinking of the ‘commons’ which not only reduces development costs but also geographic barriers to collaboration presents us with a unique opportunity to satisfy these conditions. This thesis will therefore explore the feasibility of engaging with Open Source methodologies for facilitating user led technology innovations in developing countries. This includes the many operational and disciplinary challenges that must be addressed before seeking to contextualize Open Source methodologies for the Industrial Design process. It will investigate the intrinsic character of computer software and its development process for insights that can help determine if the open source methodology can be extended to Industrial Designers and the Industrial Design discipline. If yes, what forms of contextualization would be required? Abstract:
Por fim as implicações futuras sugerem eventuais soluções para os problemas encontrados e o que poderá acontecer caso se mantenham as actuais políticas.<br>The urgency to transform the Portuguese justice becomes clear when we are confronted with its inefficiency over time, and when the expenses are too high with it. There was a need to make justice more expeditious and economical, while credible in the eyes of Portuguese population. Therefore we have been trying to give big steps in the various reforms introduced to the judicial system, although many of these changes were late and not suitable for the organization of the judiciary in its essence. This project aims to evaluate and draw attention to points that are good and bad in the new judiciary map, trying to find solutions to this one. The expertise and citizens proximity level with the Courts are points to keep in mind at the current economic and legal situation in our country. As such, the study is based on these two key reform policies, both important to economy resources and to a better image of the Portuguese justice. Technological development is another key point of the new judiciary map reform and that development is covered in this project as a possible factor for improvement of the judiciary system in different aspects such as, better internal functioning of the Courts of Great Judicial District Lisbon Northwest, and closeness between justice and citizens. It was through the survey, with 62 people in the sample, that we determined the scope and effectiveness of the new reform of Portuguese legal map. We have opted to a cross-sectional study, limiting the sample of individuals (Judges, Lawyers, and Bailiffs) and locals (Experience Judicial District of Great Lisbon Northwest). By analyzing the survey responses and the interview with the Judiciary Administrator we can determine and find out the level of distance between specialization and proximity of justice with citizens. Finally, future implications suggest possible solutions to the problems encountered and what might happen if current policies are maintained.

Abstract:
As such, e-commerce platforms using Artificial Intelligence (AI) with agile methodology have been thriving. On the one hand, AI allows for better data processing and the creation of forecasting models. On the other hand, agile adoption ensures a management improvement over uncertainty and a better adaptation to new market requirements. Considering the limited number of studies that cover these three knowledge fields, we propose the creation of a new model to identify determinants that favor or inhibit the development of e-commerce, AI and agile methods in SMEs. This model will be developed using cognitive mapping techniques, based on the Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA) approach, and the DEcision MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique. The aim is to retrieve a set of recommendations that will allow SMEs to acquire competitive positions in the global market.

Abstract:
As implicações práticas e os benefícios do sistema proposto são também objeto de análise.<br>Given the increasing relevance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the European economy – and considering the market context in which these companies operate in, which is ever more competitive – the SME adaptation process to Artificial Intelligence (AI) is of utmost importance. Due to a constantly evolving social, environmental and technological scenario, there is a growing concern on the part of SMEs to adapt to technologies such as AI, recognizing all its associated benefits. However, due to the subjectivity and complexity associated to the topic, an integrated analysis of the SME adaptation process is a challenging endeavor. The present study aims to propose a multicriteria decision support system using cognitive mapping and the DEcision MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique in a neutrosophic context. The objective is to overcome some of the limitations of previous studies and models, structuring the decision problem at hand and recognizing and understanding the initiatives/factors that should be at the center of the analysis. With the assistance of a panel of experts in the field of AI, an analysis system resulted that includes situations of indeterminacy in the decision-making process. The practical implications and benefits of the proposed analysis system are also analyzed.
