Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to identify different approaches to conceptualize value co-creation and analysing firms’ co-creation strategies aided by various advancing technologies. This study further discusses the strengths and weaknesses of these strategies and suggests solutions to overcome the limitations. Design/methodology/approach Following a critical literature review, the authors propose a conceptual framework to denote the relations between evolving technologies and co-creation activities. Findings On one hand, technology influences the co-creation processes by empowering consumers, offering greater ability to connect, providing greater access to information and furnishing a platform that facilitates co-creation; on the other hand, technological advancements may add complexity, variability and lead to loss of control for service organizations. A role of customers and value definitions are identified and elaborated in the value co-creation process. Originality/value Advanced information and communication technologies transcend the traditionally defined service encounters by enabling co-creating actors to exchange resources through virtual interfaces, thus redefining the strategies of value co-creation. Though many studies have discussed value co-creation in diversified standpoints, a perspective from its relationship with technological progression over time remains nascent. The study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of technology-enabled value co-creation in service ecosystems.

Abstract:
The quality of performance during international competitions such as the Olympic Games and various world championships is often judged by the number of world records attained. The simple fact that world records continue to improve is evidence that sports performance is progressing. Does this also mean that athletes are improving? Is the continual progression of world-record performances evidence that contemporary athletes are superior to the athletes who performed in the past? Technological developments may obscure insight into the athletic enhancement made by athletes over the years. This commentary tries to separate technological and athletic enhancement in the progression of world records by the use of a power balance model.

Abstract:
Near Field Communication (NFC) is increasingly being employed in modern consumer devices and until now it has been used for mobile payments. However, on further investigation there are other areas where NFC has a key role. Recent developments in Medical and ticketing based NFC applications show promise for being the so called “Catalyst” for NFC's integration. The objective of this research was to determine if mobile payments will be the catalyst for a more widespread integration of NFC into society and how NFC technology will impact on everyday life. Research Methods comprised questionnaire and interviews to gain further insight into the current standing of NFC. The findings indicated that NFC will not mature enough to be classified as viral by 2016, especially with contactless payments as no decisions seem to have been made for any progression. It is that most likely outcome that NFC will mature enough at the very latest in 2018, with further development in the years to come for unique serialisation and the internet of things. Managerial implications for this research extend to the medical sector where large gains can be made in better patient care and remote diagnostics leading to a more efficient service.

Abstract:
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) shed from primary and metastatic cancers are admixed with blood components and are thus rare, making their isolation and characterization a major technological challenge. CTCs hold the key to understanding the biology of metastasis and provide a biomarker to noninvasively measure the evolution of tumor genotypes during treatment and disease progression. Improvements in technologies to yield purer CTC populations amenable to better cellular and molecular characterization will enable a broad range of clinical applications, including early detection of disease and the discovery of biomarkers to predict treatment responses and disease progression.

Abstract:
This qualitative exploratory study assesses the technological disruptions in restaurant services caused by innovations in food delivery. A systematic review of the restaurant classification for the past two decades showed that the use of the term “restaurant delivery service” increased significantly since 2014 and is now used as often as “fast food service.” An improved typology of services as affected by technology is presented. A hypothetical model was developed to show the hierarchical progression of restaurant services as affected by technological innovations. Technological disruptions were categorized at different stages. The theory of disruptive innovation was assessed, and a hypothesis is presented to relate the impact on delivery services. Major disruptions identified are in the restaurant terminology/classification, widening of the distance between the service provider and customer contact points, and the potential collateral disruption to the service quality. Opportunities and challenges related to disruptions are identified.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between architecture and the blind people. For better clarity and understanding of the topic, The work has been divided into five distinctive parts. In the first, introduction part, I approach space sensation of a blind person from the physiological and psychological angle. This analysis is very important for the understanding of imagination, which the blind person has. Another important fact to understand is the way in which the blind person gets the information about the space and what is his ability to process it. Further, I explain the basic principles of the blind person’s movement through space and describe instructions of how to help blind people in the concrete spatial situations. In the next part, I give a short information about the historical progress of the relation between the society and the blind people. An important fact is that, as late as 200 years ago, the blind people were considered as “sub men” and did not have the full freedom privilege. This relation has been modified over time and nowadays, the blind people have the freedom of movement and all the rights to enjoy their lives. To meet the needs of the blind people, many associations have been created that act on their behalf. The associations have different modes of functioning, but their common goal is to help blind people with their social rehabilitation, looking for employment and removing architectural barriers. The core of my work is divided into two parts. In the first one, I focus on the problematic of the blind people and architecture from the functional aspect. The functional aspect is vital for the blind people. It corresponds to their safety in the environment. In this chapter, I treat in detail basic elements for designing buildings, for specifying barriers and principles of design for blind people. Furthermore, I describe the help tools the blind people need in order to move in the space. I evaluate the future of these tools and indicate the rapid technological progression which makes the life of blind people more comfortable. In the next part, I focus on the problematic of the blind people and architecture from the aesthetic aspect. This question has not been much explored yet, but is, nonetheless, very important. In this part of my work, I use more my personal experience and the knowledge coming from the exploration of space. Aesthetical values are subjective for all the people, with or without a handicap. Therefore, in this final chapter, I try to note the facts that can be used in the process of the aesthetical perception and to reflect on them. In the domain of aesthetical research, there also exist tools and institutions that help blind people in their comprehension of architecture. The division of my work emerged from the compilation of diverse facts in the process of writing. This thesis has an informative and practical character. It is intended for people who want to understand and to be informed about how to design architecture for the blind people. It will be directed towards people who build this kind of architecture and need an overview of how to make it. It is also intended for people interested in learning more about architecture.

The primary aim of this research is to study certain factors that determine productivity. The following factors have been taken into consideration: Human Resources, technological progress, innovation and quality/safety in the workplace, which apparently seem to have scientific and technological areas that are more relevant than others. It is within these areas that Portugal may increase its economic productivity together with the support of adequate public policies. Although the private sector plays the most important role in financing R&D and technological progress, the Portuguese Government must conceive strategic priority models for the growth of the economy. The establishment of a strategic priority model applied to CTI economical and budget making policies may contribute towards a rise in the trust levels of investors, thereby increasing competitiveness and economic growth.

Abstract: The advent of so-called bio-economy is linked to a growing interest in processes and products more environmentally friendly, which are able to sufficiently preserve the conditions of life on our planet. This advent implies the need of a quantitative reduction and a qualitative change in the use of production inputs. For its large endowment of renewable productive inputs and its experience in industrial use of them, Brazil may occupy a central role in this context. In the chemical industry, it is example of this advent the emergency of the new biotechnological routes, which are governed by the use of renewable resources, especially biomass, that is less polluting of the model based on the use of fossil resources. The model captained by the use of biotechnology is represented by biorefineries, that is a parallel concept of the traditional refineries that operating based on fossil resources. In this paper, we use the term white biotechnology to describe the application of this technology to chemicals products, materials and fuels. The advent of biotechnology, as it constitutes an event of breaking up with the current production model, can serve as an opportunity for firms that have relatively less commitment to the traditional model to assume an innovative and market position of greater prominence. However, the existence of such opportunities must be look with caution, since some assets and competencies established in the previous model still have great value for development of innovative activity and production in white biotechnology. This study sought to analyze, largely supported by indicators derived from patents, the strategic positioning of firms in Brazil - Braskem and Petrobras - to take advantage of these opportunities, compared to large international competitors. The renewal of the portfolio of skills and assets, in line with the concept of exploration strategies, is a major means by which incumbent leaders can consolidate their positions, even in the face of a rupture event that will possible undermine some of its competitive advantages. In conclusion, the analysis of indicators constructed revealed that Brazilian firms are poorly placed to take advantage of opportunities created by white biotechnology advent, despite the mere existence of such patent ownership by these firms reveals the building, even if incipient, of dynamic capabilities. Brazilian firms occupy a marginal position in the innovative hierarchy with respect to these technologies when measured by the strength of their patent portfolio, so that, despite the existence of a window of opportunity, they seem to be poorly prepared for their catch

Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to discuss the insertion of modern biotechnology in the agriculture production system, in particular the plant nutrition. In the Brazilian soybean cultivation, the inoculation technology can supply all the nitrogen that plants need via the biological fixation of nutrients. Thus, the inoculation can replaces all the nitrogen fertilizers in soybean production representing a process of creative destruction. Seeking to empirically assess the economic impact of this process, an input-output model using the data from input-output matrix for the Brazil economy in 2006, is developed. In spite of nitrogen biological fixation, the inoculation also results in soil organic matter enrichment, better patterns of seed germination, great nutrients absorption and control of soil hydric and temperature stresses.Jointly, these factors contribute for more sustainable agricultures practices, without decreasing the production output. However, they cannot boost the diffusion of inoculation technology. To agriculture benefits from the adoption of inoculation technology it is necessary to build an evaluation mechanism that goes beyond the market mechanisms. Based on the systemic approaches innovation, this thesis recommends policies for strengthening the inoculation technology trajectory. In accordance with the proposal of this study, the institutionalization of policies that incentive the diffusion of inoculation technology represent a "way" to transform the efforts of public Research and Development centers in new products and process for agriculture. Additionally, it also increases the chance of innovation for other biotechnology products and processes via the learning by doing process

Abstract: This dissertation presents the university-industry linkage panorama in Brazil, by CNPq's Directory data, that represents a university's overview, and Pintec's data, that shows industry's opinion of the importance of cooperative projects to develop new process and products. The focus of this study is to understand which sectors use more universities to develop innovations and which science fields contribute directly with innovative active in Brazil. This work also discusses the relationship between science and technology importance to assurance a development process coherent and sustainable. Considering that institutions' construction are significant elements and determines the building of this relationship, it also presents an historical overview of scientific and industrial building and then shows that weak university-industry linkages detected is influenced by how those actors were built up and consolidated. Using information collected on CNPq's Directory it could be elaborated a matrix that show the number of research groups and firms that interact dividing by science fields and industrial sectors. To Brazil were founded 15 "spots of interactions" where it is relevant the dialogue and feedback between universities and industry. There are few points where there is university-industry relationship and rare of them are intense. Among the "spots" founded in this dissertation it was described briefly four cases and their linkage to their histories' constitution. From these cases described in a few words, it can be said that the "spots of interaction" have roots in the development based on incentives for cooperation, development and sectorial consolidation policy, existence of a domestic industry instigated to compete and export, constitution of knowledge-based and technological sectors, support to scientific production by stimulating the formation of new researchers, funding for science and scientific community concern to contribute to technological capabilities of those industries. Even though the picture presented reflects a weakness in the university-industry linkages, and this weakness influences innovative process, the Brazilian scenario can still be estimated as optimistic. If considered the beginning of the recent concern about the importance of innovative process as a source of competitiveness and development (the 1990s), Brazil can be considered a country where the owned technology production is in its beginning and provides a positive progress

Abstract: This research purposes to investigate the knowledge production structure that is embodied in the Brazilian aviculture (broiler and layer), giving emphasis on the performance of national universities and research institutes (STIs). The investigation of the aviculture is related to the large Brazilian competitiveness in this activity. In the case of broiler sector, Brazil displays the third position in broiler meat production and the first position in exportation. What motivates this research is the importance that the generation of new inputs, practices and knowledge has carried out into the aviculture, increasing productivity, minimizing costs and improving products quality. Knowledge and innovations deriving from isolated and combined efforts not merely from genetic, nutrition and drug industries, but also from universities and research institutes, all of them immersed in what we called 'knowledge value networks'. Recognizing the great contribution that this groups of actors has granted to aviculture we mapped the companies and the organizations related to this activity in Brazil through the use of the Brazilian statistical source called RAIS and specialized poultry sources. Universities and research institutes, in particular, exert a crucial role inside these networks, forming qualified human capital, bearing remarkable scientific and technological researches, rendering technical and laboratorial services and even giving technical support to the production of new products and processes developed by supplier companies that, subsequently, will be introduced in the market. For the purpose of this research - to investigate the knowledge production structure focusing on the performance of the STIs - we analyzed aviculture related scientific papers published in Scopus database between 1970 and 2009. With the support of computational software called Pajek we generated co-authorship networks. Through the investigation of these networks we identified the most important STIs in terms of knowledge generation to the Brazilian aviculture and the STIs that presented a larger number of interactions with external sources, including the industrial sector

This paper will examine the Biotechnology Development Policy in the Brazilian and some major foreign legal systems in order to prove controversial issues, and that, on account of the progress of scientific research in the bioindustry, the law has not yet come to situations experienced in the legal world. The research will also show that the problem of practicing the policy of developing biotechnology and bioindustry under political, social and economic scopes goes beyond the legal regulations, that is, the public sector in partnership with the private sector and civil society need to design and carry out strategies for this area. In order to stimulate the insertion of the country in international trade taking into account their ability to develop competitive advantages in this segment. The goal of this research is to provide parameters for the law to monitor the progress of bioindustry and related areas, supporting these studies in the legal system with the aim of, at least, seeking answers to the questions that will be raised when the start of the search. The work will be developed through the analysis of the Biotechnology Development Policy, combined with other laws and regulations of scientific and technological interest, especially the Industrial Policy, Technology and Foreign Trade - PITCE, the Law of Innovation and Tax Incentives and other laws that comprise the Brazilian legal system related to the proposed topic. Apart from legislation, the search seeks, where possible, successful cases and experiences, besides the examination, at he same time, with Comparative Law. It was verified, in this context, the big importance of the three inter-relationship between all the members, such as Academy / University, biotechnology companies and the government (and their secretaries of support and implementation) for effective implementation of technology parks through the creation of viable regulatory milestones. With this study, proposals were done to be forwarded to the Biotechnology National Committee, newly created by the last policy. For that, there should be encouragement of investment and political will to structure these strategies, targeting it with the preparation and implementation of a scientific policy to be presented to civil society and the whole Brazilian industrial sector through concrete proposals for feasible actions in a short, medium and long-term with a view to the consolidation of Brazilian Bioindustry. With a global, strategic and comprehensive vision, once again, in a multidisciplinary stage, this is a typical case in which this work is not limited to know what the Academy/ University has to offer, but the will and desire to implement and put into practice all lessons arising from scientific research generated in the Academy to the direct application in national bioindustry. This link is necessary for biotechnology development, where the applied science still serve to benefit the whole community. With the implementation of these such policies, there is the real apllication of law and the consequent increase the efficiency of national production structure, innovation capacity of Brazilian Companies, the absorption of technology, the generation of business and the expansion of exports. Thus, this research should provide parameters for the law to monitor the progress of bioindustry and related areas, supporting its studies in law with the aim of, at least, seeking answers to the questions that have being raised routinely in the field of science by proving its real application in the legal world

Abstract:
The present dissertation aims to analyze the representations of the worker, work, technology and progress in child labor ―História das Invenções‖, of Monteiro Lobato, published in 1935. It is considered that the representations of technology, progress and work, present in the work, demonstrate the process of recontextualization, directed by Monteiro Lobato, by adapting the work of Hendrik van Loon, to the Brazilian context, which is marked by new political, economic and ideological tensions. To this end, it is necessary to verify that the perspective of progress is included in the work, since, for the Brazilian writer, progress is associated with some types of inventions, which impacted the world of work. Two progress concepts are presented in the narrative: at first the evolutionary process by which the human being passed, idea strongly related to evolutionary theories. In a second moment, the author shows the progress as a tool of modernization, being closely related to inventions. The inventions considered as a technological apparatus, are extensions of human bodies. Also discusses the approach of Monteiro Lobato on the use of the machinery and its relationship with the employee. It will be seen that, for the Brazilian writer, the machine came to make work efficient and complete man, being a fundamental instrument of human progress and a mechanism of rationalization and improvement of the worker. We will seek to demonstrate that the idea of progress in Lobato is associated with the mechanization of the work, which would bring modernization to the social and economic structure of the country.

Abstract:
AbstractWe examine the technological aspects of political collaborative practices in one of the first studies of participatory constitution writing in the course of its progression. In particular, we examine how digital collaborative and communicative tools can facilitate (or inhibit) the permeation of boundaries, which manifest through the differences in political ideologies and partisan beliefs. Our study is grounded in interviews with 15 members of the Constituent Assembly in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, and its primary contribution is in constructing a fine-grained contextualized understanding of political collaborations, their evolution, and their relationship with collaborative tools. Our findings demonstrate the centrality of versatile and widely available digital tools (such as WhatsApp and Google Docs) in political work. In addition, elected lawmakers prefer tools that allow them to organize their collaborative and communicative actions based on dynamic social boundaries, and their need for asynchronous work practices. We observed a tendency of simultaneously using multiple digital tools to accomplish specific political objectives, and leveraging them in plenary sessions for strategic advantages. On the one hand, collaborative tools enabled strategic advantages by selective permeation of boundaries across political ideologies. On the other hand, lack of awareness about boundaries between ‘private’ and ‘public’ on social networks were considered as privacy blind spots. By focusing on boundaries of different kinds, our paper elucidates how the introduction of digital technologies into political process transforms the long-established categories, distinctions and divisions that are often taken for granted.

Abstract:
AbstractThe future is influenced by various possible developments and is hence difficult to predict. Still, each company or institution bases its vision and strategic progress on certain assumptions for the future. In order to prepare for various developments of the future, it is reasonable to consider different possible scenarios while building a future vision. Thus, this chapter focuses on the methodological approach for the generation of future scenarios showing what the surroundings for supply chains might be like in a time horizon until 2030. This integrates various political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental influences and changes. The methodological framework required for generating scenarios is set by a combination of quantitative and qualitative scenario planning methodologies. Close coordination and collaboration between production and logistics guides the underlying scenario design to focus the context on supply chains. While considering trends described in Kalaitzi et al. 2020, this approach results in a set of macro scenarios, each describing a possible future development until 2030. The macro scenarios range from scenarios with progressive developments to regressing or stagnating evolutions.

Abstract:
AbstractWith the advent of 5G technology and an ever-increasing traffic demand, today Communication Service Providers (CSPs) experience a progressive congestion of their networks. The operational complexity, the use of manual configuration, the static nature of current technologies together with fast-changing traffic profiles lead to: inefficient network utilization, over-provisioning of resources and very high Capital Expenditures (CapEx) and Operational Expenses (OpEx). This situation is forcing the CSPs to change their underlying network technologies, and have started to look at new technological solutions that increase the level of programmability, control, and flexibility of configuration, while reducing the overall costs related to network operations. Software Define Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Machine Learning (ML) are accepted as effective solutions to reduce CapEx and OpEx and to boost network innovation. This chapter summarizes the content of my Ph.D. thesis, by presenting new ML-based approaches in order to efficiently optimize resources in 5G metro-core SDN/NFV networks. The main goal is to provide the modern CSP with intelligent and dynamic network optimization tools in order to address the requirements of increasing traffic demand and 5G technology.

Abstract:
AbstractThe theme is the urban re-qualification, applied in particular to the architectural heritage and the public space. The goal is the ongoing challenge of outlining a new perspective aimed at “common good” and sustainability. The instrument chosen is the “environmental technological design,” understood as a cultural, scientific, and social position, that is, as a position on the role of architecture. The contribution reiterates the urgency of restoring the transformative power of the design mission to the project, too often reduced to a set of technical compilation procedures. In the best cases, a position that is lost in the complication of procedures, in the extension of time, in the waste of economic and human resources. A crisis of the project as “anticipation” of progressive scenarios, precisely in the most acute, ever more serious phase, of the urgency of the reorganization of urban systems, with a view to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Not a recent urgency, today only brought to light, dramatically, by the reality of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Among the solutions, the design experimental research, well beyond the objective of flexibility, up to the notion of “functional indifference,” understood not as shapeless neutrality, but as the maximum functionality of spatial, architectural and urban quality.

Abstract:
Democratic commitments to progress for all have long been made. The necessary aims must include responsibility for environmental stewardship to ensure that a sustainable planet earth is passed down to succeeding generations. Commitments are also made to achieving universal human rights to freedom from the five giant evils of society: squalor, ignorance, want, idleness and disease. All people must also enjoy equal opportunities irrespective of race, gender, religion or belief, age, disability or sexual orientation, and societies must achieve some measure of social balance. Politicians have long made such heroic statements of intent, but actual achievement has fallen far short of those commitments. They can only be achieved by the effective operation of all three layers of the real economy, nominated here as the social-infrastructural, progressive-competitive and technological-revolutionary layers. Each layer is briefly outlined, together with the essential roles they must play in economic progression without destruction. Recognition of the interdependence of all humanity and the early stirrings of a rising rebellion against the status quo are noted.

Abstract:
Governing key phenomena in core disruptive accidents (CDAs) in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) are supposed to be (1) fuel pin failure and disruption, (2) molten pool boiling, (3) melt freezing and blockage formation, (4) duct wall failure, (5) low-energy disruptive core motion, (6) debris-bed coolability, and (7) metal-fuel pin failure with eutectics between fuel and steel [1]. Although the systematic assessment program for SIMMER-III [4–7] has provided a technological basis that SIMMER-III is practically applicable to integral reactor safety analyses, further model development and validation efforts should be made to make future reactor calculations more reliable and rational. For mechanistic model development, a mesoscopic approach with the COMPASS code [1, 2, 3] is expected to advance the understanding of these key phenomena during event progression in CDAs. The COMPASS code has been developed since FY2005 (Japanese Fiscal Year, hereafter) to play a complementary role to SIMMER-III. In this paper, the overall analysis of SCARABEE-BE+3 test with the SIMMER-III and those with COMPASS, focusing the duct wall failure in a small temporal and spatial window cut from the SIMMER-III analysis results of the test, are described.

Abstract:
The SGT-400 industrial gas turbine was launched in 1997 and is now a proven and mature product in the market place for both power generation and mechanical drive applications. Rated at a nominal power of 12.9MW (electrical) and 13.4MW (shaft), this gas turbine has achieved sales of more than 180 units and exceeded 1,300,000 fleet operational hours. The natural progression for the SGT-400 was to build on this experience by developing a power enhancement from the current rating to a 15MW class of engine. This paper describes the key design features of the power enhancement along with the steps taken to validate the product in a risk controlled manner. Existing proven product design complemented by new technological advancements has enabled a 12% increase in gross power output for the core engine. The latest design tools and methods result in a 15MW engine offering the highest efficiency in its class. The design upgrades to the existing gas turbine are predominantly in the compressor section which has been given an increased inlet annulus area to accommodate the extra massflow through the core. The 15MW gas turbine core maintains common interfaces with the package as the current rating, so can be retrofitted in earlier installations if required.

Abstract:
Abstract Edge computing has been recognized as a potential solution to enable intelligent manufacturing in the machining industry, especially for the small and medium-sized manufacturers. However, while various research studies have proposed their edge-based architectures for intelligent systems, there still exists a lack of practical and affordable technological plans that can be applied to complex machining process designs in actual production scenario. The objective of this research is to realize the tool condition monitoring (TCM) in machining by the edge computing based architecture for actual mass production. This study creatively proposes a calibration-based TCM system to monitor the cutting tool conditions in repetitive machining operations by comparing the characteristic signals generated by the reference cutting tools in the calibration procedure with the signal generated by the cutting tool in production through a concise similarity analysis, which can be easily integrated into typical cyber-psychical systems to realize the edge computing in a very efficient and flexible way. To validate the performance of the proposed architecture, a case study is demonstrated for tool wear monitoring of repetitive milling operations with a complex machining process design. Experimental validation has shown that the proposed edge-based TCM system can effectively monitor the tool wear progression which is in good agreement with actual wear measurements.

Abstract:
Remote work provides an alternative method of working for organisations, which in turn became a norm during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this, paper, we study adaptation practices introduced by both individuals and organisations as a way for managing the enforced remote work. The study draws upon 33 interviews collected over a year during different phases of the Covid 19 pandemic. We apply adaptation theory lenses to examine the adaptation process over time and new digital working practices. In our study, we extend technological practices by including organisational and behavioral practices. We approach adaptation as a way of coping with a radical change or dynamic situation and building resilience. Based on the data analysis, we expend the adaptation theory in relation to different forms of adaptation to new remote work practices (e.g. at technological, organisational, and behavioural level).

Abstract:
Digitization of activities in hospitals receives more attention, due to Covid-19 related regulations. The use of ehealth to support patient care is increasing and efficient ways to implement digitization of processes and other technological equipment are needed. We constructed a protocol for implementation and in this study, we evaluate this protocol based on a case to implement a device in the OR. We used various data sources to evaluate this protocol: semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and project documents. Based on these findings, this protocol, including identified implementation activities and implementation instructions can be used for implementations of other devices. Implementation activities include setting up a project plan, organizational and technological preparation, maintenance, and training. In future research, these activities and instructions need to be evaluated in more complex projects and a flexible tool needs to be developed to select relevant activities and instructions for implementations of information systems or devices.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, both small- and medium-sized manufacturers as well as large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have been faced with an increasing need for low cost and scalable intelligent manufacturing machines. Capabilities are needed for collecting and processing large volumes of real-time data generated from manufacturing machines and processes as well as for diagnosing the root cause of identified defects, predicting their progression, and forecasting maintenance actions proactively to minimize unexpected machine down times. Although cloud computing enables ubiquitous and instant remote access to scalable information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures and high volume data storage, it has limitations in latency-sensitive applications such as high performance computing and real-time stream analytics. The emergence of fog computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and cyber-physical systems (CPS) represent radical changes in the way sensing systems, along with ICT infrastructures, collect and analyze large volumes of real-time data streams in geographically distributed environments. Ultimately, such technological approaches enable machines to function as an agent that is capable of intelligent behaviors such as automatic fault and failure detection, self-diagnosis, and preventative maintenance scheduling. The objective of this research is to introduce a fog-enabled architecture that consists of smart sensor networks, communication protocols, parallel machine learning software, and private and public clouds. The fog-enabled architecture will have the potential to enable large-scale, geographically distributed online machine and process monitoring, diagnosis, and prognosis that require low latency and high bandwidth in the context of data-driven cyber-manufacturing systems.

Abstract:
The recent technological advancements have greatly improved the quality and resolution of displays. Yet, issues like full-color gamut representation and the long-lasting durability of the color emitters require further progression. Colloidal quantum dots manifest an inherent narrow spectral emission with optical stability, combined with various chemical processability options which will allow for their integration in display applications. Apart from their numerous advantages, they also present unique opportunities for the next technological leaps in the field.
