Full textTechnological advances have resulted in the development of wireless sensor applications. The densely distributed sensors, generally used for data gathering, environmental monitoring, industrial automation or surveillance, involve often low data rates and low transmission ranges. Despite the progress in software and hardware technologies, the energy efficiency is still one of the important constraints for the design of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). For wireless sensor applications, nodes are usually deployed with reduced energy resources and without capability of battery replacement. Several techniques could be used to minimize the energy consumption of WSN. In this thesis we focus the physical layer and we propose to reduce the energy consumption by using low energy coding schemes. Firstly, a study allows us to deduce that in AWGN channel, Minimum-Energy Coding based on OOK modulation is energy efficiency, but at the price of lower spectrum efficiency. Only the transmission power is considered and the consumption of electronic circuits is not taken into account. Then, different energy consumption models are introduced to achieve energy efficiency analysis using realistic devices. The fact that Minimum-Energy coding based on OOK improves the energy efficiency performance is confirmed and the limits of practical circuits are highlighted. At last, the network protocol is addressed by introducing the ARQ error control protocol. Finally, the energy efficiency of an autonomous remote control is improved by using OOK orthogonal modulation and a real demonstrator is realized

The study of usages by staffs in tertiary industries leads to a dual approach. On one hand what is generally known as cognitive technology deals with the impact of electronic writing on the mechanics of learning and thinking, interacting with the development of professional knowledge. On the other hand communication technology deals with temporal and spatial issues, directly interacting with work environment

Full textContributions due to the use, by firms, of new information and communication technologies, can be observed from two main levels. On one hand, firms tend to re-structure their communication systems and channels, both inside and outside. These are basic structural changes, since they tend to transform the stages of the production process, as well as the internal organization of the working groups involved. On the other hand, telecommunication infrastructures are extending the economic environment of the industrial organizations as they provide them with a kind of transparency -in terms of information. Combining these two viewpoints makes possible an original analytical approach of the present network of local activity

Full textThis thesis aims to study Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a General Purpose Technology (GPT) and their role in the labor productivity evolution in the United States and Europe during recent decades. This thesis is organized in three parts corresponding to the fundamental GPT features: the wide possibilities for development, the ubiquity of the technology and the ability to create large technological opportunities. The first part depicts, at first, the innovation in ICT, beginning with a short historical review of ICT inventions followed by the analysis of current data on innovation in this field. In particular, it shows how the US was better than the European countries in inventing ICT until now. Second, this first part makes an inventory of measurement difficulties due to the rate and the nature of the change created by such technologies. The second part of the thesis deals with the ubiquitous nature of ICT. It first describes the ICT diffusion across countries and industries and reviews the economic literature on the direct contribution of ICT on labor productivity growth in the US and Europe. The next chapter studies the factor demand's behaviour in sectors that are either ICT producers or ICT intensive users. The third part focuses on the ICT ability to create opportunities for complementarity innovations. Firstly, it identifies the nature of ICT complementary innovations and the corresponding efforts. It shows, then, that national accounts must be improved in order to take these efforts into account as investments. Secondly, this part shows that, among the eleven European countries studied, the problem is highly concentrated in a few countries that invest less both in ICT and in innovative assets and that these two types of effort are complementary

Full textThis dissertation brings to the forefront the informational and communicational aspects of strategic alliances. It examines how different stages of the lifecycle of an alliance are influenced by the communication capabilities of the partners and the interface through which the partners interact. More specifically, the dissertation investigates (i) the impact of firms’ ability to exchange a large information amount (IT capability) on the alliance design, and in particular on the governance structure and the alliance scope, (ii) the choice between information amount and information richness in alliances, (iii) how this choice influences changes in the levels of trust between the partners, and (iv) implications of the above for alliance performance. These issues are examined by extending existing communication media theories to the domain of interorganizational communication and by combining them with contractual and competence perspectives. Evidence for the arguments is provided from a mix of survey and qualitative data. The survey data were collected from two groups of people: Full members of the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals and alumni participants of the INSEAD executive program on strategic alliances. The qualitative data were collected through face-to-face interviews with key informants

Full textThe business environment at the end of the 20th century requires that corporations should efficiently manage their information ressources, to wich purpose new information technologies (nit : informatics and telecommunications) can be a great help. However, it is not the present business environment justifies the importance of information ressources, we may add further reason, of genial and technological character. From a general point of view, it may be said that the importance of information within the firms is but me reflection on such social organizations of something that is changing at a global level, wich is said to be entering a new order that has been termed as postindustrial society, or information society amongst other definitions. Nevertheless, in the information society, changes in organizations caused by the introduction of new information technologies are inevitable as organizations are compelled by external environment to be efficient and competitive in order to survive. On a technological level, the progress and generalization of the so-called new information technologies have also played a major role in conferring information ressources me strategic character they possess within organizations. Once mis has been said, one of the purpose of our work is to present our hypothesis that the role to be played by new information technologies within thes organizations should consist on puttin the power of these technologies at the service of an efficient management of information ressources, thus opening a way to have at our disposal the quality in information as required by any firm deserving to be described as adpatable, quick responding, aware of the threats and opportunities of an increasingly internationalized environment, and willing to cater for any present and potential needs of its customers. Come to this point, we would like to to state that another of the purpose of this paper is to show that traditional organizational structures are dissolving and new forms of organizations are emerging. We have tried to outline the organizational changes that the introduction of new information technologies might involve. The main question pointed in our work is wich we might group under the name of +the relationships between nit and organizational structures ;. At this stage, our main hypothesis is + does the growth of nit contribute to the emergence of

Full textInformation under its various shapes, communication, and their related notions, have now become the key-concepts of our representation of the world and of ourselves. However, more than a mere scientific concept, the notion of communication, born in the bosom of what was called cybernetics, has gradually been instituted a value identified to modernity and the free movement of scheme which highlights transparency, rationality and the free movement of information. The purpose of this research is to make an analysis of the ways in which information and communication have now become the keystones of a new representation of the world, and the values of a society in a state of crisis. It is to deal with the consequences and limits of this scientific, anthropological and social shift, begin to be detected nowadays. In its conclusion, this middle of this century, begin to be detected nowadays. In its conclusion, this research tries to find, through the problem of complexity, how the limits of the communicational and informational frame of interpretation could be overstepped, and emphasizes the necessity of going beyond technicised man, and the vital renewal of the subject

Full textThe conception of the documentary has changed, as well as the possibilities of creating fiction narratives and the forms associated with the techniques. In this context, we are interested in documentary practice and the influence of tools and devices such as virtual reality and augmented reality, the use of mobile applications and the development of web works on the web.We defend the thesis that technology influences the forms of representation of the documentary and has led to the evolution of narrative forms that must be rethought in their context of creation. This means that research on non-fiction productions based on the digital medium needs an open and interdisciplinary framework that can encompass its complexity. Thanks to the international character that the co-tutelage agreement contributes to this work, visual methods are inserted in in a research within the framework of visual studies. All this shapes the epistemological approach of this work.We have opted for a visual methodology with the objective of analyzing the contribution of digital technologies to the communicative qualities of the documentary and of knowing the evolution of the forms of representation. We rely on three case studies in which we apply our own method. It is a composite method in which we include the creation of an interactive audiovisual piece. All this is complemented finally with the analysis of a sample of selected documentaries. The results of the work tell us how the evolution of the documentary, in parallel with the advancement of technology, puts the viewer at the center of the story. The documentary becomes a multisensory experience created for an individual consumption in which the user acquires a central role

Full textQuantum computing raises a lot of questions related to the foundations of computing. We study, in this thesis, a complexity model called communication complexity, where we study the amount of communication required to solve a distributed task. We study this model from the perspective of quantum information theory. This thesis introduces a new way of obtaining lower bounds on communication complexity, using ideas developed in the study of quantum nonlocality. These methods are compared to previously known lower-bound methods and allow us to define a new family of Bell inequalities. We also prove in this thesis that ail previously known lower bounds for communication complexity are also lower bounds on information complexity. This witnesses the potential equivalence between these two measures of complexity and allows us to obtain direct sum results on the communication complexity of very-well studied functions

Full textThe sense of professional telematics goes beyond the material technology to englobe a multi-faceted reality, a "concept" in the marketing sense of the word. France telecom who has the main responsability for offering this service (in the form of videotex and teletel) makes use of the concept both in its discourse and its strategy. Neither the technical determinism nor the social determinism explain this construction. The method adapted consists in finding in a genealogical perspective, the manner in which the discourse employed by france telecom incorporates and makes use of certain aspects of social practice while mainteniring its strategy which is to develop minitel into an universal toal. This evolution, far from being linear, consists of reality which can only be defined clearly by placing them in the context : modification of the terminology, hybridization of the technology

Artists however when using these technologies may, whether they realize it or not, lead us to certain uses and practices allowing us to imagine some elements of the future. This, of course supposes that artists are capable of anticipating uses in the domain of technical innovation. In order to explore this hypothesis, we decided to analyze artists work to try to understand how " artistic uses " arise during the process of the elaboration and realization of a project, but equally the way in which this work which we qualify as " tekhne-logic " either invent or bring into play new uses (either imagined or real) in contemporary communications. Along with an analysis of multimedia artistic practice, an in depth analysis of the collaboration between France Telecom R-D and artists was conducted over three years (2001 - 2004)

Full textBinaural synthesis is a spatialization technique for headphone listening. It relies on the Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) encoding the auditory space in a unique way for each individual and allows to virtually position an auditory source at any location in space. Binaural synthesis was developed and tested only considering the auditory perception. In this thesis, binaural synthesis is used in the context of virtual reality (VR) environments, involving other sensory modalities. Crossmodal perceptual effects arise and may improve or lower the feeling of presence, which is the aim of RV. We focus on two perceptual and technical aspects about the spatial coherence between the different modalities. First, binaural synthesis is associated with a visual stereoscopic rendering and we run perceptual experiments on visuo-auditory interactions. It is shown that VR gives results that are comparable to those obtained in real conditions. Then, we take advantage of the VR characteristics to use more complexe stimuli and vary the experimental conditions. Second, we explore a method to get a better distance synthesis, especially in near-field, with binaural technique. We use spherical acoustics to extrapolate measured HRTFs toward closer and further distances. This method is compared to other methods and is shown to get slightly better objective results

Full textThis thesis focuses on bidirectional optical wireless communication techniques for the indoor monitoring of medical patient data. More precisely, the uplink uses infrared transmissions between a device carried by the patient and several receivers dispatched on the ceiling. For the downlink, the study deals with Visible Light Communications (VLC) using the lighting of the environment. In order to illustrate the potential of this technology for medical monitoring, the main contribution of this study consists in the evaluation of the infrared and visible channel performance considering a wearable device and patient mobility in the environment. After a general description of optical wireless communications, the thesis focuses on basic principles and characteristics of VLC, in particular the LED which is the key component allowing to provide both lighting and communication. The method used for the optical channel simulation is based on ray-tracing method associated with Monte-Carlo technique permitting a complex modeling of the studied scenario. From VLC channel study, it is shown that in order to carefully predict performance, it is important to model the presence of the patient’s body and to consider the variations induced by its movement on the position and the orientation of the wearable device. Moreover, the impact of body’s reflectivity optical properties cannot be neglected. The overall performance of the Infrared/Visible bidirectional link is then discussed in terms of outage probability for several data rates and qualities of services corresponding to several medical data types. The results highlight the feasibility of the considered monitoring scenario and the potential of optical wireless communication as an alternative for radiofrequencies regarding remote transmission. To conclude, some experimentations contribute to validation for the infrared uplink. Finally, the development of an experimental test bed on the visible downlink opens the way for future tests in order to validate the overall theoretical performances

Full textThe specifications of the standard data transmission, such as digital terrestrial television (VHF, UHF, L1, L2, S-band), mobile (GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, ... ) or the growth of the flow of the wireless data (WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, WHDMI ... ), require a reduction in the threshold of detection and a densification of channels. Several solutions can increase the flow of data: the growth of the amount of information carried by the radio-frequency carrier or the multiplication of carriers within a band. The spectral quality of signaIs becomes a key to ensuring the information integrity. At the heart of the generation and detection signaIs, the varactor, variable capacitance in function of the supply voltage, is a crucial element determining the performance of the chain of transmission. The thesis deals with the study of new varactors in technology sub-90nm CMOS and sub-250nm BiCMOS technologies. After introducing the general context of the study, we present a state of the art of varactor, then we define the performance factors and assessment tools of technologies to provide the improvement of electrical and geometric caracteristics. The first axis of our work focuses on the evaluation of new structures varactor around the intrinsic capacitance and the architectural aspect. The second axis is dedicated to the study of measuring techniques closer to the system context. Finally, we de scribe the conception of a test vehicle as VCO in 65nm CMOS technology to quantify the performance factors across the circuit. Full textHow may we understand the appropriation of the collective intelligence technologies ? We easily believe, about intranets, that sharing and communicating will be quickly adopted and shared practises of enthusiastic users. For who places the orders and who develops these technologies, the collective appropriation poses initially no question. Nevertheless, strong resistances are noticed among the addressees… They give as a pretext they are disfavoured. They argue their practises, their aims and goals, their strategies are not considered. In a word, their situation and how they define it are a far cry from what planned. Uses don’t rise. In our comprehensive research, we will analyse the process of a collective appropriation thanks to three qualitative approaches. One is a systemic approach by modelling the relationship between the actors. The second is an affordancial approach by modelling the actors’ situation. The third is an affordancial approach by modelling the actors website’s consultation. Our research will be enhanced by a case : a community of researchers in nuclear toxicology, Clairatome. Our analyses are aimed to understand the global sense of the website in the situation, its meaning for the researchers of the community, and the adequate uses for part of the actors. The collective appropriation is a long process of redefining the situation that leads to integrated and shared uses. How then can we coach the involvement of each actors ?

Full textThe thesis expounds the following theoretical and espistemological options : - at the moment, a technical culture with its notions, values and methode is setting itself up; it tends to substitute itself to another culture - called here "humanistic" - which was prevailing until now. -the juxtaposition of the two cultural fields is particulary sensible in the domains linked with communication. The latter notion is presently a compulsory passing place for the two cultures. The thesis then centers on the evolution in the pedagogical conceptions of the lecturers in "expression techniques" in the french "polytechnics" (i. U. T. ) since 1969. This evolution points out to a gradual shift from one field of reference to another. The analysis rests on a sorting of the words used by the aforementioned lecturers in the pedagogical journal "expression". The sorting has been carried out with two different methods : the former is subjective and qualitative, the latter quantitative (the words have been counted and sorted thanks to the use of a software specifically modified for carrying out the research). The two methods intersect and confirm the presuppositions : there is an evolution in discourses from a humanistic culture to a technical culture

Full textInformation and communication technologies have revolutionized work of individuals by their capacity for processing information, and bringing together spaces and time dimensions. During the ten last years, e-mail has been quickly developed in the organizations, certainly by it's facility of use and it's utility. In this context, the main problem is no longer how to access information but its quality and the individual capacity to choose among the various channels of communication the “good” way to work “effectively”. The negative impacts are felt by new practices that are often difficult to predict (information overload, conflicts…). In the light of evolution of 16 theories and models, this research identifies three axes -choice, use and appropriation-, and present meta-analysis in the field of the information systems. Using a statistical analysis of textual French research, the approach allow us to get four different classes: “processing in time”, “HMI”, “productivity compared to the choice of the media” and “use/satisfaction”, under consideration like as a new ways of research, opening lines enquiry. A qualitative study of a multinational in the IT sector has been performed in two distinct phases: documents study and participant observation, semi-structured interviews and analysis of messages. The thesis is completed by managerial prescriptions to be aware of human ans social dimension in processing the information

Full textNiger is a landlocked country in West Africa. Its position on the outskirts of essential poles in the under-region partly explains its delayed development. To this is added, a further delay, called digital divide. Its fleet of obsolete infrastructure does not allow it to take full advantage of global flows of information to take advantage of the competitiveness of the new information society. Spurred on by recent international discussions on new technologies, it appears that the economic development of Niger would require an appropriation of ICTs by the population. Therefore, these new information technologies are at the epicenter of development issues facing the Niger. This research was given the objective to analyze the current system of ICT in Niger and its ability to set off economic development in a context of globalization of economies based on information, knowledge and expertise, by using ICTs. Following this analysis and the questions it poses, some economic theories have emerged, the information economy and its derivatives. In the second time, this study explores, describes, explains, interprets and illustrates these theories in the context of ICTs access. Illustrative examples show that ICT correct some of these predictions. ICT improves human capital, refine agents' anticipations and reduce the risk of economic decisions. That’s why, ICTs can be considered as an economic development factor in Niger. In this revolution of new technologies, the economies have not necessarily need to go through the stage of industrialization as the old theories. The example of China and the Asian dragons shows that

Full textSince ancient times, Philosophy is a posture sui generis in front of reality, a specific manner of understanding reality: the philosophical attitude is characterized by permanent dissatisfaction regarding to available data. It is this dissatisfaction that turns permanent research, which is designed to find out what is around us, into the most remarkable characteristic of Philosophy. The uncomfortable reasoning, which accompanies the evolution of philosophical thought characterized by permanent searching of ways of dealing with the challenges of the environment in which human beings live, is the main trait of human nature. By examining cultures and information and communication technologies, we believe we are introducing ourselves to one of the really typical human problem, in the sense that we are seeking to find out how we can examine these universal assets of the humanity, but which are, in practice, shaped in the singularity of the people. Moreover, while it is true that the human beings share this characteristic of not enabling the environment to defeat them, but they do whatever they can to dominate it, it is also true that environments are varied and, within this diversity, the human beings test several manners of dealing with different environments. How, then, can this diversity be examined? What role do we attribute to the set of experiences hidden under these life patterns, that is to say, the set of values that do not belong to universal knowledge? With which legitimacy the experiences not hidden should impose themselves upon the universe of cultures? It is within this context that we propose the current analysis, which is based in different acceptations of ICT. As a matter of fact, history demonstrates that human relationships do not always tend to approach different cultures, and that several human deeds were conceived as conditions to justify wars, domination and division among human beings. This fact leads us to a double position: while we keep on regarding ICT as powerful worldwide tools, we start being worried about the fact that ICT are being given a paradigm status in the issue of development, which, as we well demonstrate later, requires other interventions and attentions different from ICT’s.When thinking of the possibility of ICT’s contribution to the issue of development, and when realizing that illiteracy doesn’t enable them to be mastered, we think what has to be done is a reconstitution and reconsideration of peoples’ specific practices, in particular agricultural activities, as a way of dealing with environmental challenges. We are, in this way, back to the issue of technique – conceiving technology as a perfect state of technique – and to the need of attributing a specific role to the technical thought, which enables every human being, in specific conditions, to not just be a simple product of the environment
