Full textThe survival of a State depends on the capacity of its leaders to be informed and on their successes to communicate their decisions, then to control their executions. The information in the ancient times circulated by mail, but also by transmissions of sound and/or light signals. After a documentary survey of stories attesting the transmission of informations by light and sound signals in the Near East during the first millennium BCE, we tried to see if the software used for telecommunications networks design and planning can hint repeater sites used for this transmission. The limitations of the technology at that time will determine parameters. Models of networks have been deducted. Finally these hypotheses have been validated on the ground

Full textThis PhD thesis is the result of a collaborative research through a CIFRE agreement between the XLIM-SIC laboratory at the University of Poitiers and the Scientific and Technical Center Building (CSTB) at Grenoble. The main goal of this thesis concerns the design and the energy optimization of a wireless sensor network able to measure during several years, the building energy performances (lighting, acoustics, temperature. . . ). To this end, research was mainly focused on the energy optimization of radio communications, through the lower layers of the OSI model. Because the physical layer performances directly impact the efficiency of the other layers, the approach was to model realistically the digital transmission chain from the development of a channel model which takes into account the people moving on the transmission quality. Then, from this physical layer model and an existing energy model, the quality of radio links has been evaluated in order to find the best trade-off between the robustness and the energy efficiency of radio transmissions. To extend our reasoning to a network scale, the following work has focused on the MAC layer study. Because of the interdependence of the parameters affecting consumption, the method chosen was to assess with a "cross-layer" approach, the energy performances of different MAC protocols, by taking into account the impact of the physical layer performances in the assessment. This study then resulted in the definition of an efficient MAC protocol for the aimed application. The final part of the work was devoted to the experimental design of a demonstrator operating on 433 and 868 MHz ISM bands, and allowed us to validate the theory developed during the thesis

Full textThe thesis work presented in this manuscript focuses on the development of a new transmission architecture specifically dedicated to wireless sensor networks and adapted to the particular characteristics of the later. The approach, based on impulse radio techniques for wideband transmission, is developed according to two main research aspects: functional and hardware. The functional aspect aims at defining the characteristics of the transmitted signal as well as the associated processing algorithms (modulation and demodulation). More broadly, it comes to define the functional architecture of the transmission chain, according to two different operating modes: mono- and multi-user. The proposed approach for transmitting pulse signals is based on the use of the discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT) at the receiver and the inverse transform (IDWPT) at the transmitter. The orthogonal nature of the wavelets makes it possible, without needing a complex MAC layer, to make multi-user communications, either simultaneous or not, over a wideband channel, thanks to the strong discrimination between the transmitted pulses. The second aspect relates to the development of hardware architectures allowing the implementation of the processing algorithms developed in the functional part. The search for high performance (high ratio between processing speed and hardware cost) and flexibility (configurability, extensibility) is particularly important in the functionality related to the discrete wavelet packet transform which constitutes the critical core of the transmission chain. Massive and generic parallelization techniques are developed and implemented to achieve the required levels of performance and flexibility. Validation was carried out using respectively Simulink/Matlab (MathWorks) modeling and simulation for the functional aspects, and VHDL modeling (at the Register Transfer Level -- RTL) and FPGA implementations for the hardware aspects

Full textPrecision measurements play a crucial role in electronic engineering, particularly in the characterization of silicon-based heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) embedded into devices for THz applications using the BiCMOS technology. Thanks to ongoing innovations in terms of nanoscale technology manufacturing, devices capable of operating in the sub-millimeter wave region are becoming a reality, and need to support the demand for high frequency circuits and systems. To have accurate models at such frequencies, it is no longer possible to limit the parameter extraction below 110 GHz, and new techniques for obtaining reliable measurements of passive and active devices must be investigated. In this thesis, we examine the on-wafer S-parameters characterization of various passive test structures and SiGe HBTs in STMicroelectronics' B55 technology, up to 500 GHz. We start with an introduction of the measuring equipment usually employed for this type of analysis, then moving on to the various probe stations adopted at the IMS Laboratory, and finally focusing on calibration and deembedding techniques, reviewing the major criticalities of high-frequency characterization and comparing two on-wafer calibration algorithms (SOLT and TRL) up to the WR-2.2 band. Two photomask production runs for on-wafer characterization, both designed at IMS, are considered: we introduce a new floorplan design and evaluate its ability to limit parasitic effects as well as the effect of the environment (substrate, neighbors, and crosstalk). For our analysis, we rely on electromagnetic simulations and joint device model + probe EM simulations, both including probe models for an evaluation of measurement results closer to real-world conditions. Finally, we present some test structures to evaluate unwanted impacts on millimeter wave measurements and novel transmission line design solutions. Two promising designs are carefully studied: the "M3 layout", which aims to characterize the DUT in a single-tier calibration, and the "meander lines", which keeps the inter-probe distance constant by avoiding any sort of probe displacement during on-wafer measurements

Full textThe rise in frequency band till 60 GHz in millimeter frequency-band, which should provide high data rate up to 5 or 7 Gb/s, has been the response to the increasing demands for high data rate telecommunication systems. This rising in frequency spectrum requires active or passive circuits more integrated with high performances. In this work we use the PGL technology (Planar Goubau Line) at 60 GHz: a metal strip deposited on a dielectric substrate without ground plane, the dielectric in our case is a bilayer substrate (High Resistivity silicon over Glass), we take into account in the simulations the measure bench metal plate. To show the efficiency of PGL technology at 60 GHz, several passive circuits have been fabricated and characterized: Transmission Lines (of low transmission losses with high quality factor Q), Coplanar/ PGL transition, filters based on square open-loop resonators, and a stepped impedance low pass filter. The agreement between the measurement and simulations validate this technology for the fabrication of low-pass and bandpass filters
