This paper describes the progress made by the Wright Laboratory Armament Directorate Instrumentation Technology Branch in developing Subminiature Instrumentation Technologies. These advancements will be explained relative to the overall scope of the Subminiature Instrumentation efforts. The goal of these efforts is a DOD depot capability to provide low cost, non-intrusive telemetry instrumentation for any weapon system. The concept of developing a "chip-set" of monolithic modules to allow quick design and fabrication of a specific telemetry package, has been implemented with the development of subminiature telemetry. Today, the telemetry package with 128 digital and 64 analog channels, 200kbs up to 10Mbs data rates, with programmable functions, is approximately 2 inches X 2 inches X .25 inches and weighs about 50 grams. Encryption is available and provisions are being made to transmit video in the same module. This technology is being pursued as the standard for all air-to-air and air-to-ground telemetry systems.

Eriksson, Jonas. "Advancements in Firefly Luciferase-Based Assays and Pyrosequencing Technology." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Biotechnology, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-3708.

Full text
Abstract:

Pyrosequencing is a new DNA sequencing method relying on thesequencing-by-synthesis principle and bioluminometric detectionof nucleotide incorporation events. The objective of thisthesis was improvement of the Pyrosequencing method byincreasing the thermal stability of firefly luciferase, and byintroducing an alternative DNA polymerase and a new nucleotideanalog. Furthermore, the development of a new bioluminescentassay is described for the detection of inorganicpyrophosphatase activity.

The wild-type North American firefly(Photinus pyralis)luciferase is a heat-sensitiveenzyme, the catalytic activity of which is rapidly lost attemperatures over 30°C. Two strategies for increasing thethermostability of the enzyme are presented and discussed. Inthe first strategy, the solution thermodynamics of the systemis affected by osmolytes in such a way that heat-mediatedinactivation of the enzyme is prevented. In the secondstrategy, the enzyme is thermostabilized by mutagenesis. Bothstabilizing strategies can be utilized to allow bioluminometricassays to be performed at higher temperatures. For instance, both DNA polymerase and ATP sulfurylase activity could beanalyzed at 37°C.

The osmolyte strategy was successfully employed forincreasing the reaction temperature for the Pyrosequencingmethod. By increasing the reaction temperature to 37°Cunspecific signals from primer-dimers and 3’-end loopswere reduced. Furthermore, sequencing of a challenging templateat 37°C, which previously yielded poor, non-interpretablesequence signals at lower temperatures was now possible.

Introduction of a new adenosine nucleotide analog,7-deaza-2’-deoxyadenosine-5’-triphosphate (c7dATP) reduced the inhibitory effect on apyraseobserved with the currently used analog,2’-deoxyadenosine-5’-O-(1-thiotriphosphate)(dATPαS).

Sequencing of homopolymeric T-regions has previously beendifficult with the exonuclease-deficient form of the DNApolymerase I large (Klenow) fragment. By using the DNApolymerase from bacteriophage T7, known as Sequenase, templateswith homopolymeric T-regions were successfully sequenced.Furthermore, it was found that the strand displacement activityfor both polymerases was strongly assisted if the displacedstrand had a 5’-overhang. In contrast, the stranddisplacement activity for both polymerases was inhibitedwithout an overhang, resulting in reduced sequencingperformance in double stranded regions.

A firefly bioluminescent assay for the real-time detectionof inorganic pyrophosphatase in the hydrolytic direction wasalso developed. The assay is versatile and has a linearresponse in the range between 8 and 500 mU.

Key words:bioluminescence, osmolytes, glycine betaine, thermostability, firefly luciferase, inorganic pyrophosphatase, inorganic pyrophosphate, Pyrosequencing technology, secondaryDNA-structures, Sequenase, Klenow-polymerase, reaction rates, temperature, c7dATP, dATPαS.

Madan, Tanvir Singh. "End-use electrification in the residential sector : a general equilibrium analysis of technology advancements." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/72900.

The residential sector in the U.S. is responsible for about 20% of the country's primary energy use (EIA, 2011). Studies estimate that efficiency improvements in this sector can reduce household energy consumption by over 25% by 2020 (McKinsey Global Energy and Materials, 2009). In this thesis, given the increasing amount of attention that both policy-makers and industry are giving to residential energy use, I examine the implications of end-use electrification and efficiency improvements in households. In particular, I focus on high efficiency electric technologies for heating and cooling (referred to as HVAC) needs. Advancements in technologies such as heat pumps are beginning to make the economic case for switching from end-uses of gas to end-uses of electricity in the residential sector. I examine the implications of such end-use electrification, ranging from its impact on energy consumption to its contribution to the abatement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. I use the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model, a computable general equilibrium model, to analyze the research question. The EPPA model captures full economy-wide impacts of policy mandates and technology changes. First, I added further detail to household energy consumption in the model. Then, I introduced technology changes corresponding to advanced electric technologies for residential heating and cooling and tested their impact with policies that either support or inhibit their entry into the marketplace. I find two interesting results from the analysis. First, if policies are enacted to support advanced electric HVAC technologies, they displace end-uses of gas and increase household electricity consumption. Second, household end-use electrification in the U.S. leads to an increase in overall emissions in the economy, given that the overall emissions of any electric appliance depend not only on the end-use efficiency of the appliance but also on the efficiency of generating and distributing electricity. Thus, end use electrification only helps in emissions abatement if the power sector becomes less carbon intensive.

Full text
Abstract:
The relatively new concept of talent management has been recognized to have a strategic role in disruptive business environments by both researchers and practitioners. A resourced-based view proposes that organizations should focus on internal resources and foster their own unique resources, for instance human resources. These unique and valuable resources are managed to become a core competence for facilitating organizations to seclude imitators and achieve competitive advantages. The proposition that initiate the research question of this thesis aims at delving into the relationships between talent management systems (TMS) and environmental volatility. The concept of talent management and other related theoretical concepts have formerly been theoretically ambiguous and remains empirically unexplored. This thesis aims to find out how TMS are managed in times of technology advancements. In order to achieve that goal, the authors integrated theoretical knowledge from the field of talent management and further developed a resource-based integrated TMS framework accordingly. Based upon a qualitative and abductive research approach, a single case study of a Nordic company operating in financial services was conducted to answer the research question and to test the framework. By following the order and structure of the framework, the semi-structured interviews were designed and analyzed respectively. The empirical findings reveal that strategic talent management proved to be of great importance in times of technology advancements. A lightweight structured talent management system addressing on flexibility and agility is managed to adapt to environmental uncertainty. Accordingly, the resource-based integrated TMS framework is reviewed and modified for future researchers and practitioners to use and further elaborate upon.

Abstract:
The present paper describes an innovative electro-hydraulic system developed for automated side loaders. The system is based on Intelligent Flow Control (IFC), a concept where open circuit electric displacement controlled pumps are coupled with EH directional control valves. IFC was selected in order to achieve the level of performance required, in terms of efficiency and productivity (i.e. cycle times), and also to provide the best possible control of the side loader arm. The paper describes the system layout and the basics of the controls: from the alghorithms of the arm actuators to the vehicle on board telemetry and diagnostic. The paper reports the comparison between the IFC system (implemented on the vehicle) and a more traditional approach based on a Load Sense Flow Sharing concept. The benefits of the IFC solution are highlighted focusing on the energy efficiency (very important especially in the case of CNG engines, where the torque available at idle is significantly lower than diesel engines), but also in terms of controlability and response (due to the lack of load sensing signal lines).

Kubbara, Fawzi Saeed. "Geographic Data in City Planning Departments: The Volume and Use Related to Advancements in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology." PDXScholar, 1992. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1352.

Full text
Abstract:
Many local planning departments have acquired and put into use advanced automated geocoding and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to store, process, map and analyze geographic data. GIS technological advancements in hardware, software, and geographic databases - specifically, in geocoding methods to reference street address data to geographic locations - enable data to be integrated, mapped, and analyzed more efficiently and effectively. Also, technological advancements depend on organizational and institutional environments. The relationships between technological advancements and technical (data mapping and analysis), organizational, and institutional environments are not clear. The purpose of this study is to explain these relationships to help planning and development directors make better decisions in acquiring and using advanced geocoding and GIS technology. The findings are based on a mail survey of planning and development departments in cities with populations of 50,000 or more in the United States. The study found that planning departments with advanced geocoding and GIS technology are capable of conducting advanced geocoding applications. Data can be tabulated, aggregated, linked, and modeled for mapping and planning. Geocoding to aggregate data to small geographic areas helps by providing required and up-to-date information to solve urban problems. However, the study did not find that advanced geocoding systems enhance data quality as measured by spatial resolution and volume. Further studies are needed to explore this issue. The adoption and implementation of advanced geocoding and GIS technology are influenced by organizational and institutional environments. Large cities have more experience with hardware, software programs, computer professionals, and training programs, but they are dependent on centralized systems from an earlier computer era. Consequently, more recent entrants to using computers for geographic data processing are emerging rapidly. As technology is becoming more advanced, hardware and software costs are declining. Some of the organizational and institutional issues are eliminated while new ones are emerging. As a result, small area cities are adopting advanced geocoding and GIS technology more rapidly than they were previously, and sometimes they surpass large cities. This study improves understanding of automated street address geocoding methods and how these methods are related to advancements in GIS technology. The study also examines how technical, organizational, and institutional environments are interrelated in adopting and using geocoding and GIS technology. The challenge in the 1990s will not be how to fund and acquire a GIS, but how to integrate all of the pieces in order to make the technology work properly.

Ingersoll, William Robert. "Technology Advancement in Network Markets and Agent Bargaining." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/596000.

Full text
Abstract:
I extend the Katz and Shapiro (1985) oligopoly model with network effects to encompass products with differing technological levels. I focus on a version of the model in which firms can invest in order to improve the probability that they advance their technology from a low level to a high level. I find that better available technology, lower adoption costs, and stronger network effects increase the rate of technological advancement and social welfare. Incompatible networks have lower total surplus but higher adoption rates. The investment competition dissipates to some degree the potential producer rents from successful advancement, particularly in the incompatible network case where increased competition can result in lower total welfare. A policy imposing a technology standard (via a high type technology requirement) yields the highest adoption rates, but negatively affects overall welfare. Analysis of the optimal tax/subsidy policy shows that taxes are optimal in most cases, since the private incentive to advance technology outweighs the social incentive. Negotiations in the real world can rarely be represented by a simple bargaining session between two parties. Agent bargaining, when one player represents another party in a bargaining situation for some form of compensation, is one such complicating circumstance from the real world. I explore the effects that this third entity has on the outcome of negotiations. I conduct a laboratory experiment emulating a simple example of agent bargaining. I test a hypothesis formulated using sequential-Nash-bargaining and also propose behavioral explanations for the observed behavior. I find that sequential-Nash-bargaining does a poor job of explaining our observations, and that using a weighted minimization of the differences between each of the three parties as a focal point provides a promising alternative.

High speed atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a developing process in which nanoscale objects, such as crystal structures or strands of DNA, can be imaged at rates fast enough to watch processes as they occur. Although current generation AFM is already pivotal in many fields of research and industry, slow scan rates inhibit the imaging of dynamic samples. Much advancement has been made in high speed AFM thus far, yet many subsystems remain to be developed. This thesis outlines the development of a feedback controller for the AFM scanner, as well as the filters designed to attenuate high frequency noise. A comparison of the scan signals and scanner output signals are compared, with and without the controller and filters. Post-data acquisition image processing techniques are also described and compared with raw data. Finally, these techniques are applied to the high speed imaging of calcite etched with hydrochloric acid.

Ability to store data is one of the key utilities in modern computer. The memory industry grows as demand for denser, smaller, cheaper and faster memory device increases. The term memory has been used widely in computing jargon to refer to random access memory (RAM). RAMs are built with steady improvement over the years owing to semiconductor integrated circuit (IC) technology. However, RAMs are still struggling to achieve all aspect of the paramount design intended for memory device: non-volatile (including radiation hardness and materials stability), dense, fast, low power consumption, low cost, IC technology compatible and read/write (R/W) endurance. Magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM) offers such possibility. MRAM has just entered in 2002 with 128kbit product, but it has improved to reach 16 Mbit density in the year 2009, that makes a 128 density multiplication in 7 years. The prototyping has gone through an even higher density at 64 Mbit in 2010, along with optimistic view of reaching Gbit density in the near future by the introduction of spin-torque-transfer MRAM. A close look at the presented MRAM cost model, the cost of 64 and 128Mbit module can go as low as 4.4-4.9 cents/Mbit and 2.8-3.0 cents/Mbit respectively. Comparing to similar density (64 or 128 Mbit) DRAM product - around 1993-1996, DRAM pricing is revolving around $1/Mbit, which makes MRAM a cost competitive product with respect to DRAM or other memories. Evidently, MRAM cost looks promising to compete with superior memory products such as DRAM and Flash, while on its way, it will replace the first few market penetration areas such as embedded memory and SOC circuit for mobile/automotive application.

Charles, Angela Michelle. "Perceptions of Women of Color on Career Advancement in High Technology Management." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4276.

Full text
Abstract:
In information technology, few women of color hold senior level executive leadership positions in the United States. Currently, in the high-tech industry, Asian and Black women hold 1.7% of executive/senior-level positions, and only 0.2% are in CEO positions. The purpose of this research was to understand professional executive women of color experiences in career advancement in the high technology fields. The study's conceptual framework included organizational culture theory, Krumboltz's theory of career counseling, and the leadership pipeline model. The overarching research question and subquestions addressed the lived experiences of 15 professional senior executive women of color in relation to career advancement in high technology to understand their perceptions, feelings, and values through a transcendental descriptive phenomenological approach. Through the use of Colaizzi's method of data analysis, 8 major themes and 11 subthemes emerged from interviews with the participants. The results indicated that women of color needed to have access to internal opportunities for advancement, adjusting to longer work hours in a male dominated work environment, and the need to establish networks of women of color for support. This study may support positive social change by prompting organizational leaders to develop gender-neutral, comprehensive strategies that do not impede women from obtaining technical executive positions. If women were extended the same opportunities as their senior executive male counterparts, women executives could thrive as senior leaders.

Farah, Geili Mustafa. "Multinational corporations in the Arab world with particular reference to the contribution of industrial joint ventures to development in the Gulf region." Thesis, Brunel University, 1991. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5263.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the status and the role of Multinational Corporations in the Arab World. Its main hypothesis is that the Multinationals today represent a permanent feature as the major world-wide source of modern technology. As such, the Arab countries will continue relying, into the foreseeable future, upon technology produced, owned or controlled by these global firms. The research finds that a century of increasing integration with the western industrialised countries, primarily shaped by the activities of the multinational corporations, has nevertheless left the Arab region less industrialised and more technologically and institutionally backward than many other parts of the world. The Arab Nation as a whole, in all its diversity of countries and regions, has failed to economically or industrially advance at the same rate as other newly industrialising regions. The lack of commitment to national and regional development needs in the Arab World on the part of most multinationals, is matched by an equal absence of any clear sense of purpose and dedication on the part of the Arab countries themselves. Despite the proposition by some Arab professionals and elites that the Arab States must consider breaking with any development strategy that substantially relies on access to capital and technology provided by foreign multinationals, the research contends that, in view of the current underdeveloped state of indigenous technology in the Arab World, the contemplation of the option of "de-linking" from the multinationals is neither possible nor desirable. The fact is, that the Arab States, individually or as whole, are not as yet prepared for the challenges that such a go-it-alone development strategy would imply. The research also finds that, as the multinational' behaviour is governed by diverse objectives, helping out the developing countries of the Arab World to build-up their technological base is not generally one of their distinctive goals. They have their own "growth" strategy while each of the individual Arab States has its own "development" policy. The objectives of each differ, as shown in this thesis, and are often incompatible. Yet, for a multinational corporation to secure profit, growth and security, it will need the goodwill of the Arab countries, while the latter, in order to start building their technological base, need the multinationals. Thus, objectively, they need each other and a fruitful cooperation between the two parties depends on the convergence of two strategies, which usually need to undergo many changes in order to accommodate each other's diverse interests. This means that, what a foreign multinational can really offer depends on how much an Arab country, individually or in collaboration with other Arab countries, may actually be prepared or able to take. From the latter's viewpoint, the ability to take is dependent on the extent to which the Arab countries can cooperate effectively together. The recent trend in the region towards forging economic integration, in the form of regional groupings among neighbouring Arab countries, is widely heralded to be an essential step in the right direction. However, in view of the considerable variations in natural resource endowments which exist among the countries of the Arab World, it has been increasingly suggested by the Arab participants of our main survey, that inter-Arab multinational joint ventures constitute a highly desirable form of organising economic activity, and of accomplishing effective economic cooperation among the countries of the region. Most importantly, the thesis demonstrates that there are many areas in which conventional economic theories are deficient in explaining multinationals' behaviour and impact on the Arab World. Deficiencies between theory and practice arc referred to throughout the work and discussed in particular detail in Chapters 4 and 12. A major conclusion of this study is that, the Arab governments which once feared the multinationals are now actively interested in seeking to court and accommodate them more effectively to local development needs. There is increasing evidence that the Arab countries have learned to bargain with multinationals to make them better serve their specific objectives and interests. Through more contacts and interactions, previously contrasting positions have softened and a wave of pragmatic attitudes on both sides is emerging to promote greater recognition of the mutual interests involved. It is the hope of the author of this thesis that his work will encourage even greater mutual understanding and cooperation between the Arab States and multinational partners in the future. Indeed it is only through such cooperation that joint efforts can be effectively used to promote beneficial development and growth for the future prosperity of the Arab Nation as a whole.

Full text
Abstract:
The aims of this study were to compare the importance of government policies upon the development of advanced technology industries in five countries: France, West Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Japan. Three advanced technology industries were selected: microelectronics, machine tools and advanced materials. Data were collected from governments in the five countries, academia, independent research organizations, trade associations, industry and international organizations. The data were analyzed using statistical procedures and the results were related to classical and the "new" theories of comparative advantage determinants for the five countries. Critical analysis was also undertaken of the theories that postulate the role of government policies for industrial growth in the light of the rapid geographic diffusion of advanced technology sectors across national boundaries. As a result of these analyses the role of government policies upon the development of advanced technology industries was identified in the five countries. Analyses were undertaken to determine government policies that were successful and those that were not and the reasons for the success or failure of these policies in the light of economic, social, political and geographic factors.

Abstract:
“It is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the dominant factor in society today.”Isaac AsimovThe development in technology and the adaptation to strategies and production techniques has led the textile industry to a completely different path, to the one on which it was for decades. The current scenario shows the world at the verge of total transition. But this much advancement is not consistent. The countries across the globe can be divided into two distinct groups, developed and the developing countries. So is also the case with the development and the advancement within these countries and the one country Pakistan which is the focus in this paper. The countries which were at the forefront in expansion and development during the industrial revolution are now leading the textile industry in all aspects and the developing countries which realized the importance of textile industry quite late, are now following the footsteps of these countries. Still there is a huge gap between their approaches and strategies, and that concerns not only the technology but other constituents of society such as education, policies and infrastructure etc.The basic thinking and objective behind the study was to identify the strategies of the Pakistani textile and clothing industry with the consequences and results as a response of these adopted strategies. The textile and clothing industry of Pakistan has always been the backbone of the country’s economy. It contributes 54% of total exports and 46% of total manufacturing income which shows the importance of this industry in the overall economy of the country. So, in order to sustain and also to increase the current contribution level, it is necessary to sustain a certain level of competency and to increase this level either by improving the system, strategies, infrastructure or policies with or without the help of government. The technology up-gradation has not only simplified the processes but also has helped different industries to extract favorable results and to shape the things according to the desires and needs. But still there are regions where the main focus of the textile industry is not on further development in the textile field but to sustain a specific level of production which they are doing by containing a certain level of technology and equipment to run their industry such as in Pakistan, while on the other hand the developing countries are involved in much more intensive development in textile field exemplified by smart and intelligent textiles, nano technology, bio mimics and tissue engineering. In order to achieve the results, an extensive and detailed search was done which was then analyzed and finally interpreted to find the desired outcome. The study showed wide differences between the general approach and strategies of people and the industry of Pakistani textile and clothing industry from its main competitors in the same region of Asia and with the other countries.

Abstract:
he business climate is undergoing a transformation and managers are faced with several challenges, notthe least of which is related to pricing strategy. With an increased transparency in the market as well as anincreased competitive pressure, and with more sophisticated and well-informed consumers, retailbusinesses find it hard to navigate the pricing jungle. At the same time, the conventional wisdom in thefield of pricing and the theoretical models on the topic, originate from a time long before thedigitalization. Old models are not a problem in itself, but when there are new forces in the pricingecosystem, driven by technological advancement, an assessment of the incumbent models is in the bestinterest of both businesses and academia. The reason for this is that, the use of old models that rely oninaccurate assumptions may impact businesses’ prioritizing of resources or their overall business strategy. In addition, researchers might be distracted and the research field disrupted. Thus, the purpose of thisstudy is to discuss whether or not there are additional dimensions in pricing strategy that are not coveredby the incumbent pricing models. Here, dimensions refer to the key components of businesses’ strategicdecision making in regards to pricing. This thesis examines pricing models in today’s business context in order to answer the research question:“Are there additional dimensions of the empirical reality of pricing strategy that are not covered by theincumbent pricing models?” The research question has been studied qualitatively through a literaturereview, a pilot study and twelve case studies, where the pilot study had the purpose of exploring thedepth, whereas the multiple case studies focused on the breadth, of pricing strategies. The case studiescover businesses in different retail industries and of different sizes, namely the industries of Clothing &Accessories, Daily Goods, Furniture and Toys & Tools, and of the following sizes: micro, small, mediumand large. The empirical data has mainly been gathered by conducting interviews with production, salesand management personnel at the case businesses. The data has been structured, reduced and analysedwith the help of a framework of analysis that has been developed throughout the pilot study. The results of this study lean on previous research and a main divider in pricing strategies has beenidentified as businesses use either a data-driven or an intuition-driven approach in their strategic workwith pricing. As such, it is proposed that the division of pricing strategies need to be acknowledged, sincethe separate methodological approaches may lead to different results, while implying different costs, resources and required knowledge. Furthermore, the division may form a basis for competitive advantage,be extended to other areas of strategic management and become clearer, since the adoption of technologyand its impact will increase in the future. As a result, in the future of pricing, they key is going to be toaccount for both the strategic perspectives and the methodological approaches in the strategic decisionmaking process of pricing.

Helin, Alva. "A Framework for Assessment of and Advancement Towards Sustainable Circular Economy : An application on automotive brake calipers." Thesis, KTH, Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-280486.

Full text
Abstract:
The current use of natural resources within the industry generally constitutes of linear systems of raw material extraction to waste formation. However, an increased awareness of sustainability issues has resulted in engagements to try to minimise the impacts on the environment that these linear systems impose. Circular Economy is a concept for a strategy that strives towards closing loops of material in society, and therefore reduce the need of raw material extraction and waste formation. Although Cir- cular Economy strives towards increasing the sustainability of a system, recent research has shown that circularity of material does not necessarily have to lower the environmental impact. Therefore there is a need for a method that can assess circularity from a holistic perspective to ensure the contribution of the Circular Economy strategy to a more sustainable society. The aim of the study is to create a framework that accounts for both conventional circular economy indicators and environmental impacts, and that helps set a strategy for companies to transform towards sustainable Circular Economy. The findings of the performed literature study resulted in the gathering of the most used assessment tools for assessment of circular economy in previous studies: Material Flow Analysis, Cumulative En- ergy Demand and Life Cycle Assessment. This set of tools is used to identify hot spots of impact of a product throughout the product lifetime and to set a strategy toward better practices of manufacturing companies. The study gives an example of practical implementation of the framework on a case study of brake caliper remanufacturing at Autoexperten, a chain of franchise concept garages owned by the parent company KGK. A Material Flow Assessment and a Life Cycle Assessment is performed on a scenario modeled to represent the current state of the case of remanufacturing at Autoexperten, and an alternative scenario that do not include the practice of remanufacturing. The results of the performed assessments concluded that the current state scenario is the most preferable alternative regarding energy use, material use and environmental impact. Therefore, the main recommendation in regards to business strategies for Autoexperten and KGK is to continue the practice of remanufacturing.

Abstract:
Technological advancements lead to improved capital productivity along with a complement for labor, where tasks normally are considered non-automatable.  However, technological advancements reduce labor demand, leading to high levels of unemployment as industries adapt to automation.  In return, unemployment created from high exposure of automation affect income from taxes, which leads to changes in the social welfare. This thesis tests high exposure of automation and the impact it has on the potential welfare of a country, reflecting the consequences of diminishing labor demand and possible counter measures on the declining tax revenue. Using the recent model of Acemoglu & Restrepo (2018) as analytic base, our estimates indicate the displacing effects on labor share have become more evident with evidence automation having less labor augmentation and more labor displacement.

The recent invention of Google Glass has prompted me to contemplate how future technologies will affect the way we interact with one another. In this paper, I argue that Google Glass technology is the first sort of technology that will facilitate us to violate our genuine interactions with one another in a face-to-face setting. Once we diminish these types of interactions, we fail to respect one another on a fundamental level and as a result, we fail to genuinely pursue one of the most important classes of meaningful projects in our lives: developing and maintaining relationships.

Abstract:
The purpose of the quantitative study was to analyze the staffing patterns, organizational structures, funding resources, practice of resource allocation, technology use, size of alumni population, size of institution enrollment, and age of the institutions at senior public colleges and universities in the southeastern United States. These institutions were derived from the membership of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education [CASE] during the academic years 2010-2012 in the United States District III region, generally the Southeast to lower Mid-Atlantic states. The study was further limited to public, comprehensive institutions as determined by the Carnegie Classification system. Data were collected through an online internet survey to test 11 research questions and gather demographic information relevant to the study. Of the 100 potential institutions for response, 16 completed surveys were received. The overall results of the tests reflect that 3 of the 11 results were statistically significant. Specifically, resource allocation scores were significantly higher than funding resource scores. Also there were strong positive correlations between technology use and age of institution and between size of alumni and the size of the institution.

Objectives: Determine the factors related to technological innovation in the area of health, as well as the acquisition, maintenance and repair of such equipment, assessing whether its acquisition is related to the scrapping and disposal of this equipment. Method: Gradually developed in this study, with a sample of twenty four professionals with different level of education and their areas of training were different but also developed its activities in a single hospital. With 60% of respondents worked and two companies and only 40% worked in a company an interview was conducted with the possibility of written comments after the meeting is held. This comment related answers of the questions were recorded and then analyzed to join the sample results. The worked out the method of organization and tabulation of the data, which were expressed in percentages. Results: Concludes that 54% of respondents said that technology has contributed in the recovery of the health of people and therefore there is a need for management of this technology and a continuous improvement in the technological sector, which needs investment to acquire new technologies and their maintenance and upkeep. During the study it was found that the equipment are mostly discarded when the repair thereof become more expensive than buying new equipment. Also noted that the inappropriate use of such equipment are frequent and not always all equipment purchased are used, allowing a bunch of equipment without proper use and proper care, makes them quickly scrapped. Conclusion: Given these results, we conclude that the technology contributes to the improvement of peoples health, but we must recognize that in addition to the acquisition of the equipment is necessary professional training for the proper use of the equipment and for its maintenance and conservation so that these serve for use throughout its useful life

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes medical manuals published in England between 1500 and 1770 to trace developing medical understandings and prescriptive approaches to conception, pregnancy, and childbirth. While there have been plenty of books written regarding social and religious changes in the reproductive process during the early modern era, there is a dearth of scholarly work focusing on the medical changes which took place in obstetrics over this period. Early modern England was a time of great change in the field of obstetrics as physicians incorporated newly-discovered knowledge about the male and female body, new fields and tools, and new or revived methods into published obstetrical manuals. As men became more prominent in the birthing chamber, instructions in the manuals began to address these men as well. Overall these changes were brought about by changes in the medical field along with changes in culture and religion and the emergence of print culture and rising literacy rates.

Lucas, D. Pulane. "Disruptive Transformations in Health Care: Technological Innovation and the Acute Care General Hospital." VCU Scholars Compass, 2013. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2996.

Full text
Abstract:
Advances in medical technology have altered the need for certain types of surgery to be performed in traditional inpatient hospital settings. Less invasive surgical procedures allow a growing number of medical treatments to take place on an outpatient basis. Hospitals face growing competition from ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). The competitive threats posed by ASCs are important, given that inpatient surgery has been the cornerstone of hospital services for over a century. Additional research is needed to understand how surgical volume shifts between and within acute care general hospitals (ACGHs) and ASCs. This study investigates how medical technology within the hospital industry is changing medical services delivery. The main purposes of this study are to (1) test Clayton M. Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation in health care, and (2) examine the effects of disruptive innovation on appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and bariatric surgery (ACBS) utilization. Disruptive innovation theory contends that advanced technology combined with innovative business models—located outside of traditional product markets or delivery systems—will produce simplified, quality products and services at lower costs with broader accessibility. Consequently, new markets will emerge, and conventional industry leaders will experience a loss of market share to “non-traditional” new entrants into the marketplace. The underlying assumption of this work is that ASCs (innovative business models) have adopted laparoscopy (innovative technology) and their unification has initiated disruptive innovation within the hospital industry. The disruptive effects have spawned shifts in surgical volumes from open to laparoscopic procedures, from inpatient to ambulatory settings, and from hospitals to ASCs. The research hypothesizes that: (1) there will be larger increases in the percentage of laparoscopic ACBS performed than open ACBS procedures; (2) ambulatory ACBS will experience larger percent increases than inpatient ACBS procedures; and (3) ASCs will experience larger percent increases than ACGHs. The study tracks the utilization of open, laparoscopic, inpatient and ambulatory ACBS. The research questions that guide the inquiry are: 1. How has ACBS utilization changed over this time? 2. Do ACGHs and ASCs differ in the utilization of ACBS? 3. How do states differ in the utilization of ACBS? 4. Do study findings support disruptive innovation theory in the hospital industry? The quantitative study employs a panel design using hospital discharge data from 2004 and 2009. The unit of analysis is the facility. The sampling frame is comprised of ACGHs and ASCs in Florida and Wisconsin. The study employs exploratory and confirmatory data analysis. This work finds that disruptive innovation theory is an effective model for assessing the hospital industry. The model provides a useful framework for analyzing the interplay between ACGHs and ASCs. While study findings did not support the stated hypotheses, the impact of government interventions into the competitive marketplace supports the claims of disruptive innovation theory. Regulations that intervened in the hospital industry facilitated interactions between ASCs and ACGHs, reducing the number of ASCs performing ACBS and altering the trajectory of ACBS volume by shifting surgeries from ASCs to ACGHs.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the changes and challenges technology has created in the field of technical illustration. Technical illustration includes the fields of technical drawing as well as scientific and medical illustration. Previously, technical illustrators learned and used traditional illustration methods, without the aid of computers. However, technology has rapidly entered the field and has changed the education, work environment, skills, and role of the technical illustrator. I note both the benefits and disadvantages that current technical illustrators are facing in their work. I explore both sides of the digital media and traditional art debate while focusing on the technical illustrator's role, tools and methods used in the illustration process, education, idea-generation, and the future of technical illustration. By emphasizing the issues associated with the incorporation of digital media into traditional methods, I hope to bring awareness to the transformation of technical illustration and the future of this discipline.

Case, Lindsay Anne. "Improving the efficiency of turkey breeding programs through selection index design, technological advancements, and management optimization." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/3039.

Full text
Abstract:
Breeding objectives in the turkey industry are heavily weighted towards improving growth traits. This thesis focused on methods to efficiently select for other important production traits such as reproduction, feed efficiency, and meat yield. Based on bivariate and random regression modeling it was determined that egg production, fertility, and hatchability were influenced by genotype by environment interactions and, as a result, the regulation of reproductive traits is by some unique genes in the summer and winter. This may be due to changes in day length and temperature. Feed efficiency is another important consideration in a breeding objective and feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake were both moderately heritable. Residual feed intake was also more independent of production traits than feed conversion. Feed intake, body weight, and weight gain were moderately heritable and progress can be made in feed efficiency by appropriately weighting these traits in an index. Infrared measures of surface temperature were then investigated to determine if they can be used to select for feed efficiency. Temperatures of the distal metatarsus, eye, neck, and head did not show a strong relationship to feed efficiency and therefore offer limited advantages to a breeding program. Selection for breast meat yield (BMY) is important and it was determined that breast muscle depth, measured with ultrasound technology, is heritable and highly correlated to the carcass trait. As a result, ultrasound traits can compliment conformation scoring and sibling testing in a breeding program to increase the accuracy of selection for BMY and increase response to selection. A deterministic model was also developed and could be used to determine optimum slaughter weight. This would optimise profits in an integrated system, enabling the industry to account for and capitalize on genetic gains. Overall, the population parameters and selection criteria identified for reproduction, efficiency, and meat yield traits identified in the present thesis could be used to increase selection efficiency in turkey breeding programs. Further, the developed production model can be used by the industry to slaughter turkeys at a time that maximizes profits, based on performance levels.

Abstract:

High pressure die casting is an industrial metal casting process used to manufacture goods for use in many aspects of society. Within this manufacturing process, the tooling is subjected to chemical attack from molten aluminum while also being responsible for heat removal during solidification. The purpose of this study is to develop and test materials that allow the tools to better withstand the chemical attack, and to develop design rules to guide the use of additive manufacturing for improving the heat exchange function of by way of conformal cooling.

Within the material studies, a gooseneck with a niobium lining was developed to allow the successful implementation of hot chamber aluminum die casting. In addition, a manufacturing plan is described that will allow the niobium gooseneck design to be easily sourced by die casting companies. The material studies also included dunk testing of several coatings, including a plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition silicon doped diamond like carbon (PACVD Si-DLC). The Si-DLC coating performed the best in the dunk testing as compared to bare and nitrocarburized tool steel, and a number of other coating architectures.

Within the study of additively manufactured conformal cooling design, a finite difference model is developed that allows a simulated experiment that produced a number of useful equations that guide the design of die casting tooling. During the development of the models, it was discovered that little is known regarding the friction factors of additively manufactured steel pipes, so a factorial experiment was employed to empirically determine said friction factors. Charts allowing design engineers to quickly determine pressure drops and heat transfer coefficients of conformal cooling designs was produced as well.

The progress of technology increases the average human lifespan. A rise in aging population drives the value of the medical equipment market increases rapidly. According the marketing report, the value of the medical equipment market is US$ 300 billion in 2012, and it is forecasted to reach US$ 430 billion in 2017 (Global Information, Inc., 2012). The rapid growth of medical equipment market indicates that it has great potential for developing. During the period from 1995 to 2008, the volume of patent applications in medical technology increased rapidly worldwide. Computer science, electrical machinery, pharmaceuticals and digital communication also accounted for the large share of total growth (World Intellectual Property Organization, 2011). Patent analysis is useful to understand the trend of technology development. However, the huge volume of patents is hard to analyze effectively and efficiency. In addition, clinical trial on patients must be performed to validate that the new medical equipment is efficacious. The purpose of this study is to analyze emerging medical equipment developments and marketing directions, and a methodology which combines patent analysis with clinical trials is proposed in this study. Knowledge discovering, ontology and meta-analysis are used to extract the useful information from patent documents and clinical trials. This study will use the dental implant technical domain as case study to understand the medical technology market trends.

Information technology and its usage on the internet have revolutionized the way in which various copyrighted works are captured, stored, copied and distributed. By expanding the breadth, diversity and sheer number of copyrighted works in existence, the internet has fundamentally changed the nature of copyright markets.
This thesis attempts to argue that the laws in Mainland China should reserve enough space for information technologies to develop, without unreasonably prejudicing the interests of copyright holders.
This thesis contends that the utilitarian justification for copyright plays an underlying role in both Chinese copyright legislation and judicial application. Under the utilitarian model in China, fostering a maximization of culture development is the aim of the copyright law. As such, in the era of information overload, the Chinese government should aim to develop the Digital Economy. In order to achieve this aim, it needs to start by ensuring that its copyright law appropriately enables Internet Intermediaries to operate and to invest in creating Chinese Digital Economy. Copyright law in China needs to create room to move.
This thesis examines Sony defense, notice-and-take-down safe harbors, inducement liability and fair use, for the purpose of seeking enough space for information technology development. The existing rules in China, e.g. inducement liability, should be interpreted as avoiding placing unreasonable burden on internet intermediaries. As to the defenses against copyright infringement, Sony defense in the US should be introduced as a factor in assessing copyright infringement in China. And the scope of safe harbor protection should be extended to include all internet intermediaries, for the purpose of providing breathing room for unanticipated technology developments. Moreover, at the very least, certain fair dealing exceptions for certain transformative use in good faith should be adopted in China to foster the existing operations of information technology. And it is more desirable to introduce a non-exhaustive fair dealing exception to cover activities necessary to run all socially useful internet intermeiary services, in the way of ensuring information technology development.
A well-designed legal system should have positive impacts on the human progress; or otherwise, it would have deterrence effects on the social development. A legal system which promotes both copyright and communication technologies creations is what we need in the future. This kind of system requires a fertile land for technologies innovation without destroying the developments of the entertainment industries

In nowadays, semiconductor has become one of important industries in the whole world. As process technology shrinking, IC (integrated circuit) products get better performance due to faster electric signal operation; moreover, manufacture cost is lower by increasing more chips in the same area after process shrinking. Moore’s Law which be published by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in 1965 once plays a leading role in semiconductor industry. But as the coming of nanometer generation, Moore’s Law seems to meet bottleneck for its physical limitation. On the other hand, in 2004 TSMC founder Morris Chang has said that: “If Moore’s law has not slowed down in the lab, it will surely slow down in the marketplace”, it shows that the economy benefit of market can also make a great influence to the Moore’s Law. In this research, from the perspective of technology, we explored the trend of semiconductor advancement and observed the following challenges as nanometer generation comes: wafer material, component technology, lithography technology, interconnect technology and research cost. Additionally, from the perspective of economy, we used Bass model to analyze the upgrading of process adapting and discovered the behavior of market demand: For the first phase, adapters are chip designers who need to utilize advanced process; For the second phase, the demand of adapters in superiority of high speed by process shrinking is less than in high year rate of fabrication, most of these chips fabricated belong to mature products.

Abstract:
abstract: This dissertation examines gender differences in career advancement outcomes among academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scientists. In particular, this research examines effects of gender, PhD advisors and postdoctoral supervisors mentoring resources and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads on the career advancement outcomes at early career stages. Female academic scientists have disadvantages in the career progress in the academic STEM. They tend to fall behind throughout their career paths and to leave the field compared to their male colleagues. Researchers have found that gender differences in the career advancement are shaped by gender-biased evaluations derived from gender stereotypes. Other studies demonstrate the positive impacts of mentoring and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads. To add greater insights to the current findings of female academic scientists’ career disadvantages, this dissertation investigates comprehensive effects of gender, mentoring, and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads on female scientists’ career advancement outcomes in academic science. Based on the Status Characteristics Theory, the concept of mentoring, Social Capital Theory, and Ingroup Bias Theory, causal path models are developed to test direct and indirect effects of gender, mentoring resources, and gender homophily on STEM faculty’s career advancement. The research models were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) with data collected from a national survey, funded by the National Science Foundation, completed in 2011 by tenured and tenure-track academic STEM faculty from higher education institutions in the United States. Findings suggest that there is no gender difference in career advancement controlling for mentoring resources and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads and other factors including research productivity and domestic caregiving responsibilities. Findings also show that the positive relationship between gender homophily in mentoring dyads and the reception of the mentoring resources, especially regarding providing help on career development and research collaboration, lead to enhanced early stage career advancement. Insights from the findings contribute both to theoretical understandings of the overall effects of gender, mentoring, and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads on female academic scientists’ career advancement at early career stages and to provide evidence of positive effects of same-gender mentoring dyads to universities.

The purpose of this study is attempting to construct a theory of project advancement (TOPA), and a case analysis is used to illustrate the techniques of TOPA’s five main analytic steps which have to be implemented during projects management. For improving current theories of Project Management, TOPA has different points of views and solution. Those different points of views are: (1)There is a time-limit to executing Multi-projects program, and each project will contribute to the program only under a circumstance of being completed before that limitation. (2)The resources for executing projects are deficient; therefore proper strategies are necessary for resources allocation. The solution is to construct a decision analysis and tasks operation procedure for formulating strategies at upper level and implement tasks at lower level. The five main steps of analysis procedure in TOPA are: STEP 1: Define problem and its fundamental goal. STEP 2: Clarify the projects and their goals to achieve the fundamental goal. STEP 3: Entry mode selection. STEP 4: Advancement mode selection. STEP 5: After confirming entry mode and advancement mode, establish resources allocation model and make a solution. TOPA is an integrated theory of present decision-analysis and project management’s concept, and can be used for project management and execution in a variety of fields. It will not only be utilized to resolve the problems of resources allocation and using priority (which is so call “to do things right”), but emphasizes to verify the value of fundamental goals (which is so call “to do the right things”). For both theoretic accuracy and practicable simplicity, TOPA proposes either mathematical programming or heuristic method to be the choice of solution. Though the result of analysis on national defense technology R&D can not be used practically by Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, TOPA has shown a high performance for practical application. Due to continuous developing of TOPA, the issues below are suggested to study further: the field of application, comparison on TOPA with other PM method (e.g. EVM, Earn Value Management), the solution of multi-resources insufficiency, the factors for entry mode selection and advancement mode selection, and the selection rule for choosing analysis tools.

Abstract:
A considerable amount of research effort has been invested in investigating the under-representation of women and their career advancement in traditionally male dominated sectors. Although it is widely recognised that females’ participation at all levels of management as well as in the economy has increased substantially over the years, more than half of the economically active women in South Africa are still found in occupations which are extensions of the traditional female role. The technology sector is regarded as one of the vital sectors to the economic development and sustainability of any country, therefore, attracting and retaining women in the sector is an imperative. Despite initiatives to address inequalities in the workplace, attracting and retaining women in the ICT sector nevertheless remains a challenge. Thus, the aim of this research was to explore the career advancement experiences of female managers in the ICT sector. An exploratory qualitative study approach was adopted to gain insights into the said career advancement experiences of female managers at different levels in an ICT company. Semi-structured interviews were administered to ten female managers in the company. Insights from the interviews formed the basis of the data analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Integrating the participants’ experiences with pertinent literature provided an in-depth understanding of female managers’ career advancement experiences. Literature and findings of the research indicate that various factors combine to give effect to the so-called glass ceiling, which denies women access to opportunities crucial for their career advancement. Lack of role models, mentoring and networking opportunities, work/family conflict, working hours, training and development and organisational culture were identified as factors that inhibit the advancement of women into senior leadership positions. In addition, the findings further revealed that commitment to ongoing development, mentorship, an enabling organisational culture and flexible work environment are career advancement enablers. The outcome of the study confirms that there is an imbalance in the representation of women at senior management levels in the participating organisation (at the time the study was done) and, while numerous studies have sought to analyse the trends in employment and retention, in South Africa very little is known about the factors that influence the retention and advancement of women, specifically in the ICT sector. The study thus highlights the interventions required to attract, develop and retain women in the ICT sector as a means for organisations gaining a competitive advantage.
