Two articles in this issue of Medical Problems of Performing Artists use specific technologies to advance our understanding of particular aspects of performance health. Clemente et al. used three-dimensional accelerometers to measure the motion of the head, jaw, and neck in pianists. Saito et al. used electromyography (EMG) in the soleus muscles of dancers along with transcranial magnetic stimulation to show that the corticospinal tract adapts to the demands of dancing. These two examples of the use of technology in performing arts medicine research led me to review past issues of the journal

AbstractSince Antiquity, there have been biunivocal links between theater, technology and visual arts, each of these branches being, if not decisively influenced by the others, at least stimulated. Technology was put at the service of theater either as a logistical part or in “main” roles, sometimes in competition with the actor, in other words with the man. In the first case we are dealing with elevators, cranes, light or sound devices and so on. In the second, with automatic machines, largely autonomous. A Mediated Intimacy; Art, Technology and Exchange in the Digital Age examines the role of intimacy in the technologically extended work of art. The text posits that there are three strategies that the technologically extended work of art uses to create mediated intimacy. These strategies are technological completion, where the viewer/participant completes the work; technological exchange, where the viewer/participant enters into an exchange with the work; and technological displacement, where the viewer is displaced from their time and place and occupies a new co-constructed space.
