Abstract:
This thesis addresses the commercialization decisions of academic scientists. Although there is a great deal of research on environmental, university and individual determinants of the formal technology transfer mechanisms, this thesis addresses a gap in the literature by studying how technology characteristics affect the selection of university technology transfer mechanisms. For this purpose the insights from main theoretical sources were combined: a) the economics of technological change and b) the diffusion of innovations theory and a conceptual framework that considers eight characteristi

Nearly half the worlds population is dependent on wood as their primary energy source. Therefore with deforestation becoming increasingly prevalent in many regions of the developing world, there is an urgent need to improve combustion efficiency of stoves or to find alternative fuels. Densification of loose biomass residues into briquettes is a means of upgrading the feedstock material. Briquettes are easier to store, more convenient to use and burn at a more steady and controlled rate than loose biomass. Falling film reactors are a very effective geometry in which to carry out fast exothermic gas-liquid reactions, because they allow easy removal of the heat produced. To optimise and improve falling film reactors, soundly based physical models are required. Existing models assume a flat liquid film combined with empirically-determined mass transfer coefficients, but there is growing evidence that this is unsatisfactory, since the interface is dominated by ripples and larger disturbance waves which have a significant effect on the mass and heat transfer rates through and into the film.
