Abstract:
This thesis designed and evaluated computer coding clubs for autistic adolescents. The coding clubs did not aim to treat autism or ‘fix’ adolescents but rather celebrate autistic strengths and abilities. This thesis developed a strength-based framework that focused on leveraging interests, valuing strengths, encouraging autonomy, and modifying the environment to suit the individual. The club provided a place where autistic adolescents felt like they belonged, surrounded by like-minded people who shared a passion for technology.

Slater, Carl. "The static and dynamic behaviour of carbon fibre composites used in golf club shafts." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3476/.

Full text
Abstract:
The static and dynamic properties of carbon fibre composites of varying orientation, stacking sequence and geometry has been analysed in terms of modulus and material loss factor up to strain rates applicable to golf club shafts. No noticeable change in modulus or damping was seen at strain rate applicable to golf club shafts. All panels tested strain rate sensitivity onset occurred at around 0.4 s\(^{-1}\), which is above the maximum observed during a golf swing (0.1 s\(^{-1}\)). The strain rate sensitivity was found to be sensitive to aspect ratio (for strain rates above 0.4 s\(^{-1}\)). Two 20° panels of the same fibre interfacial area, but with different aspect ratios (length/width) showed different strain rate sensitivities. The short wide panel (aspect ratio 1.5) showed a higher stiffness and lower strain rate sensitivity when compared to a panel with an aspect ratio of 2.6. A model was created to predict the modulus and damping of lay-ups for laminates and golf club shafts. The model was validated against three composite systems at varying orientations and stacking sequences. The software agreed well with laminate experimental data (data sets showed a RMSD of less than 5 %). From this an optimising software was developed to provide the user with a stacking sequence that will optimise modulus, damping or the product of both. This thesis also evaluated commercial shafts in order to determine the models applicability to this application. Commercial shafts were tested for both stiffness and damping, where a number of aspects such as inter-ply resin rich regions and seam were observed as possible areas for discrepancy with the models prediction. Shafts were fabricated in order to analyse these aspects in greater deal, and to determine the models limits for this application. The model accurately predicted the stiffness of the shafts however the model failed to predict the damping of the shafts when comparing to the average values taken. When damping was compared to the areas where no seams were present, the model agreed well except for in two cases, which have been attributed to shafts flaws (cracks or excess inter ply resin). The model presented in this research consistently characterised the stiffness of fabricated shafts, however the seams proved too dominant a feature to be neglected in the prediction of damping.

Churchill, Jason L. "THE LIMITS TO INFLUENCE: THE CLUB OF ROME AND CANADA, 1968 TO 1988." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/747.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about influence which is defined as the ability to move ideas forward within, and in some cases across, organizations. More specifically it is about an extraordinary organization called the Club of Rome (COR), who became advocates of the idea of greater use of systems analysis in the development of policy. The systems approach to policy required rational, holistic and long-range thinking. It was an approach that attracted the attention of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Commonality of interests and concerns united the disparate members of the COR and allowed that organization to develop an influential presence within Canada during Trudeau's time in office from 1968 to 1984.

The story of the COR in Canada is extended beyond the end of the Trudeau era to explain how the key elements that had allowed the organization and its Canadian Association (CACOR) to develop an influential presence quickly dissipated in the post-1984 era. The key reasons for decline were time and circumstance as the COR/CACOR membership aged, contacts were lost, and there was a political paradigm shift that was antithetical to COR/CACOR ideas. The broader circumstances that led to the rise and fall of the COR/CACOR's influential presence in Canada from 1968 to circa 1988 also provides a fascinating opportunity to assess political and intellectual tumult and change.

Specific organizations where the COR/CACOR's influential presence was felt included: the Ministry of State for Science and Technology, the International Development Research Centre, the Institute for Research on Public Policy, the Foundation for International Training, and the University of Guelph

Hong, Yuan-Jin. "Examining the role of self-regulated learning in the context of enhancing critical analysis in a computer-supported collaborative medical journal club activity." Thesis, McGill University, 2013. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=114173.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines how self-regulated learning facilitates critical analysis development among undergraduate medical students in a journal club, and how computer-supported collaborative learning influences their self-regulated learning. Fourteen of the 29 second-year medical students who initially consented to participate in the study actually completed the training. A mixed method design was employed as both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Quantitative data included pre- and post-tests on self-regulated learning and critical analysis, and qualitative data consisted of audio and video tapings of pair discussions and participants' reading processes. Quantitative analysis indicated that none of the results was significant, due primarily to the small sample size. Despite the lack of significance, participants' self-regulated learning was nonetheless a strong predictor of their critical analysis performance. Analysis of learners' reading processes showed that highlighting was used more than any other tool across both groups. Analysis of verbal interactions indicated that students in the experimental group frequently demonstrated self-monitoring, commonly engaged in co-regulation, often exhibited summarizing and explaining strategies, and regularly engaged in responsive and informative activities while attempting to understand journal articles. Findings suggest that medical students require more scaffolding in the development of self-regulated learning and critical analysis skills. Moreover, using a heterogeneous grouping based on prior knowledge and employing specifically designed software are beneficial in helping students regulate crucial aspects of their learning while critiquing journal articles.

Blank, Sarah T. "The robot club : robots as agents to improve the social skills of young people on the autistic spectrum." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/4407.

Full text
Abstract:
To better understand the difficulties and strengths associated with both high and low functioning individuals with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), the hyper-systemising theory has been proposed by Baron-Cohen and colleagues. It explains the social and communication difficulties in autism and Asperger syndrome (AS) by reference to delays and deficits in empathy, whilst explaining the areas of strength by reference to intact or even superior skill in systemising (Baron-Cohen, 2002). The evidence for hypersystemising alongside hypo-empathising in autism, suggests a corresponding desire to systemise the social world. Based on this theory, the use of technology in supporting the development of social and communication skills in children with an ASD is discussed. Technology and computers rely on strict, predictable systems made up of sets of rules that can be programmed, determined and understood. Use of such technology to assist in the development of social skills in an individual with an ASD utilises an existing area of strength and engages a person in an often existing area of interest and/or obsession. This thesis describes an exploratory study using non-humanoid robots with a group of young people with either high-functioning autism (HFA) or AS, which aimed to use robots as a focus of shared attention in a more naturally occurring and systemisable environment; thus promoting more implicit learning of social skills for this clinical group. Ten children attended the ‘robot club’ for eight sessions enabling a design using a series of single case studies pooled together for multiple and individual base line comparisons. The results indicate improvements as rated by parents and the young people themselves (although not by teachers), with some evidence of statistical and clinically significant changes, for example, in communication skills specifically and with general difficulties associated with autism. The results were found to be affected by total number of sessions attended, but not by age or academic functioning. Possible implications of the findings are presented in line with theory and for clinical practise. Limitations of the study are discussed and suggestions for future research made.

Abstract:
The history and institutionalisation of rugby in France has led to the establishment of a set of rules that make it possible to define, and thus make possible, the practice of rugby. These rules focus on the game, the establishment of a ranking, but also on the status of clubs and their interaction. The institutionalisation of rugby has made it possible for major changes in the way rugby is played, with the creation of federations and the transition into professionalism in 1995. After a century of resolute opposition to the idea that rugby could shift into an era of professional practice, the institutions in place finally accepted the need to change from the growing pressure from players (media, sponsors and players) to professionalise. The challenge of such a change is that rugby can finally be considered as an economic activity in its own right. Professionalisation has led to players no longer considering "rugby" in the same way. Formerly deeply rooted in amateurism, rugby has now become an essential support for a profitable entertainment product. The sports structures have adapted to professionalism by adapting their statutes but also, above all else, by defining their new business model. In analysing club strategy, maximizing sports performance is a key element, impacting the ranking institution to which the club belongs. The clubs, in an effort to optimize their business model, have gradually integrated the use of technological tools and the exploitation of the resulting data. This work attempts to analyse the factors of adoption and appropriation of technology in the context of club performance, within the elite league in France: the Top14

Abstract:
Sending a man in space is extremely dangerous. In order to continue the space exploration, robots have to be used. Designed properly, robots can handle any kind of operations in deep space. But in space there is no support such as an after-sale service. That is why their conception must be as perfect as possible to satisfy many tests. This is also the case of the ERA (European Robotic Arm). Its operations must be tested on the ground. But since forces acting at ground level are different than in space (e.g. gravity), the ERA must be in such position (the Iron Bird project) so that the target that it wants to reach must be brought by another robot. This other robot is called ERICA (Era Iron-bird CLU hArdware simulation). The goal of this project is to make the mechanical conception of the ERICA. The project was carried out in four parts. The first consisted in gathering information about the ERA in order to establish the requirements. The second was a pre-conception part. The third consists in explaining the research that had been made to choose the proper design of the ERICA. In the fourth part, the mechanical and electrical conception is presented. The ERICA is a gantry system where the payload is a gimbal holding a target. That way, the 6 degrees of freedoms of the ERA are achieved. The gantry system is provided by LinMotion and the motors by Maxon. The electronic parts are attached to the gantry at different places. A frame surrounds the working envelope so that the CLU (Camera and Lightning Units) can be fixed on it as well as protective plates against the CLU’s laser.

Byrne, Pat. "Hurling together with technology : appropriation of the mobile phone in the everyday life of an Irish community group." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30990.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how a new media technology becomes entrenched into the fabric of society – in particular how the mobile phone was incorporated into the existing communications landscape of a local voluntary community group: an Irish sports club. In the past, face-to-face interaction formed the basis of all social relations and strong local collectives were seen to provide a positive and supportive social environment, generating strong social capital. Today’s mediated communication enables the ‘networked individual’ who can choose when, where and with whom they share their lives. This has implications for the persistence and strength of local associations. Writers like Putnam (2000) have expressed concerns about the attenuation of local communities. However, others propose that communications technologies can provide new additional ways for individuals to link with each other in a ‘glocalised’ society (Hampton and Wellman, 2003) and this has the potential to overcome some of the limitations of the communicators not being in the same physical space. This thesis critically examines the applicability of these partly competing theses in the period in which mobile telephony became widely embedded in Irish society. Through 21 detailed interviews and a survey of 57 players, administrators and supporters, the study examines the choices made by club members in adopting and using the mobile phone. It further explores the changes they have made in their communication patterns and considers the implications of these for the cohesion and persistence of the community group as an entity and also the social capital it engenders. The study draws upon existing theories of human-technology interaction, in particular the Social Shaping of Technology perspective (Williams and Edge, 1996), to examine how club members weave their phone use into their everyday practices. Silverstone and Haddon’s (1996) Domestication approach, with its steps of appropriation, objectification and incorporation provide the detailed framework in mapping out this process. The study findings reveal that community members have all adopted the mobile phone and are heavy users of both text and voice calls. Membership of the sports club has eased the adoption process by providing examples of the artefact in use and a supporting environment when problems arise. Although use is now universal and intensive, there was a differential appropriation of the phone, with male club members being the first purchasers and females often being brought into the circle of users through a gifted or handed-down model. Users have devised strategies to manage their multiple overlapping sets of social relationship. They report that their use of technology has enabled a widening of their social circle while also bringing it closer, literally at the touch of a button. Contrary to the expectations of those analysts and policymakers who have foreseen technology causing local engagement to diminish, the clubs in my study have endured and are thriving; the social capital of their members is still strong and growing. This informs a critical reappraisal of such theories of community attenuation and the policies they have engendered.

This work presents a study of the critical, analytic and scientific development of the students from final grades of Elementary School from Olavo Bilac School in Cantagalo – PR, for their participation in a Science Club. This club is in the mentioned school, and attends the Program of Complementary Course in After School Activities, of the State Department of Education. The research conducted at the Science Club, have used several activities, such as group work, video presentations, conduction of experiments and the use of world wide web. In the dissertation of this work, it has presented what a Science Club is and means, and which is its role, and importance to the teaching of subjects, taking into account the Theory of Meaningful Learning. In addition, it is conducted an approach about interdisciplinary and the importance of experimentation. The theme chosen for study was Material Analysis in a sustainable perspective. The materials analyzed were paper, glass, plastic and metal in a qualitative way and participant research. Data were collected through a questionnaire before carrying out the activities and another after. A preliminary analysis of the responses revealed little knowledge and scientific vocabulary as well as a moderate and lacking critical arguments, and little analytical about the origin and type of materials they knew. The final questionnaire has shown that the Club has contributed to the development of students in an interdisciplinary perspective and meaningful learning through changes in thinking and attitudes of the participants.

Options of a constructions are really limited because of many area regulations. My proposal counts on the demolition of all existing buildings in the area, respects property area relations , protection zone, continuity with existing traffic roads, height regulation, imaginary raster of surrounding buildings, slope of terrain and orientation to the cardinal points. My suggest represents a study of five groups of objects which creating a rectangular raster. As a compromise solution, I chose the presentation and promotional areas of the individual faculties of BUT for the content of the buildings. Faculties have spaces for hobby groups for the public comprise all age groups included. I also designed the BUT Museum of History, a multimedia hall, a cafeteria, studios, a student leisure center and an observation tower with a climbing wall.

"Analyzing Digital Literacy Demands, Practices, and Discourses within a Library Computer Programming Club for Children." Doctoral diss., 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.49391.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Among researchers, educators, and other stakeholders in literacy education, there has been a growing emphasis on developing literacy pedagogies that are more responsive to the ways young people experience literacy in their everyday lives, which often make use of digital media and other technologies for exchanging meaning. This dissertation project sought to explore the nature of these digital-age literacies in the context of children learning through and about new technologies. Conducting a year-long, multimethod observational study of an out-of-school library-based program designed to engage students in self-directed learning around the domain of computer programming, this project was framed around an analysis of digital-age literacies in design, discourse, and practice. To address each of these areas, the project developed a methodology grounded in interpretive, naturalistic, and participant-observation methodologies in collaboration with a local library Code Club in a metropolitan area of the Southwestern U.S between September 2016 and December 2017. Participants in the project included a total of 47 students aged 8-14, 3 librarians, and 3 parents. Data sources for the project included (1) artifactual data, such as the designed interfaces of the online platforms students regularly engaged with, (2) observational data such as protocol-based field notes taken during and after each Code Club meeting, and (3) interview data, collected during qualitative interviews with students, parents, and library facilitators outside the program. These data sources were analyzed through a multi-method interpretive framework, including the multimodal analysis of digital artifacts, qualitative coding, and discourse analysis. The findings of the project illustrate the multidimensional nature of digital-age literacy experiences as they are rendered “on the screen” at the content level, “behind the screen” at the procedural level, and “beyond the screen” at the contextual level. The project contributes to the literature on literacy education by taking an multi-method, interdisciplinary approach to expand analytical perspectives on digital media and literacy in a digital age, while also providing an empirical account of this approach in a community-embedded context of implementation.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to understand the status of club drugs using in institute of technology students and to examine the relationships between sensation seeking, risk perception and the use of club drugs. A cross-sectional research design was used. The survey was conducted in January 2004. Accessible population was students in 3 institutes of technology in Taipei. Stratified random sampling was used to obtain 597 subjects. T test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson product moment correlation and multiple regression statistics were used to analyze data. The results of the study reveal that (1)Percentage of institutes of technology students used club drugs were:alcohol drinking 72.5﹪, smoking 36.4﹪, MDMA 5.03﹪, marijuana 3.2﹪, Ketamine 2.8﹪. (2) Gender 、grades 、mother’s education degree and part-time job experiences were significantly associated with club drug using behavior. 3)Students of institutes of technology are medium level of sensation seeking and high level of risk perception. (4)Sensation seeking was positively correlated with club drugs using behavior. Abstract Purpose: the objective of this research was to understand what factors affect university student’s intention to participate in sports clubs through the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The researcher explored the antecedents of university student’s sports club participation behavior in the context of an integrative sports club participation framework derived from previous relevant studies. Methods: The data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. Results: (a) The results suggested that this model fits the data well. (b) This study found independent variables accounted for 79% unique variance in intentions. (c) Perceived behavioral, control, attitude and subjective norm were positively associated to intentions, with the former two variables accounting for the most variance. Conclusion: Based on the findings, we can clearly realize that perceived behavioral, control and attitude dimensions play significant roles in determining whether or not university students take part in sports clubs. Therefore, university’s sports club organizers and promoters are advised to apply the implications drawn from these two perspectives to encourage more sports club involvement in the future.

Patent right is the method to practice innovative abilities and maintain competitive advantages. Using patent analysis which could help us understand the technical situation and hold the development trend is the important referable base of making strategies. However, it’s found by reviewing the past references that patent analysis mostly focus on high-tech industry, but there are rarely complete researchs on domestic golf manufacturing industry which have 80% global market share rate. This study uses patent analysis to explore the correlative patent data of golf club from the patent databases of Taiwan Intellectual Property Office(TIPO), the United States Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO). And it also tries to hold the technical development trend and the state of patent layout by analysising the patent management charts and technical charts. The research result shows that the golf manufacturers in Taiwan recently get stuck with technical development and enter the decline stage of the industrial tech life cycle. On the other hand, the name brand vendors in the United States possess the strong R&D ability and industrial technology stably maintain in maturity stage. In this industry, the main patent technology presently is concentrated in the “golf club structure”, and the main effect is “controlling promotion”.

Abstract:
The Lab is an established Australian after-school network of technology clubs for young people who self-identify as having autism. Conducted at three different Lab sites across Melbourne (Australia), this research explored how these young people socialise and develop meaningful interpersonal relationships within technologically-mediated spaces—conceptualised as ‘differentiated spaces’. The research was underpinned by scholarship in Critical Disability Studies, posthumanism and neurodiversity, and involved a total of 24 participants aged between 10 and 16. Informed by a transformative paradigm, the research methodology deployed three qualitative methods— participatory observation, video ethnography and online participatory ethnography. These methods were implemented in a consultative and flexible manner, to ensure that participants had opportunities to participate in research within a safe and relaxed environment. The research found that The Lab’s participants socialise, communicate and interact in their own unique ways, beyond the perceived limitations of dis/ability. This was largely enabled by the flexible configuration of the differentiated spaces at The Lab wherein participants were observed to interact and develop meaningful friendships in unstructured physical and online ‘Third Places’ of the programme. The study, in conclusion, advocates for a new way of understanding sociality in the digital era through the concept of ‘posthuman sociality’. This concept is capable of interrogating socially diverse identities that are reflexively interconnected with the environments one occupies. Posthuman sociality has assisted in forming an understanding of how young people at The Lab achieve a unique sense of self through the ways in which they navigate online and offline spaces to connect with others.

"The Use of Technology Compared to the Traditional Educational Methods to Improve Hydration Status of Club-Level Collegiate Athletes With a Focus on Cognitive Performance." Doctoral diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.44194.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: It is widely documented and accepted that athletes have difficulty maintaining adequate hydration status and that dehydration is a key risk factor for the heat-related illnesses commonly observed among athletes. Research has also suggested that hydration status can influence cognitive performance. Educational interventions focused on rehydration strategies have had minimal success reducing dehydration rates; hence, alternative interventions promoting adequate hydration status in athletes should be explored. This trial examined the efficacy of a commercial hydration mobile application (app) for reducing dehydration rates in campus athletes. Fifty-eight college students aged 18-40 y, who participated in club-level collegiate athletics were recruited from a large Southwestern university and randomized by team to one of two study arms, the Standard of Care – Education (EDU) or the hydration mobile app (APP), to determine if app technology improved hydration status as compared to traditional education messaging. Twenty-three (79%) in the EDU group and twenty (69%) in the APP group were mildly-dehydrated at baseline based on the three-day averages of hydration assessment (USG 1.010). Moreover, 31% (n=9) and 28% (n=8) of the EDU and APP groups, respectively, were dehydrated (USG 1.020). No significant differences were found between the EDU and APP groups following the intervention. Three-day average post-intervention USG testing showed 76% (n=22) and 72% (n=21) of the EDU and APP groups respectively were at best mildly-dehydrated. Additionally, 28% (n=8) and 17% (n=5) were considered dehydrated. Neither intervention improved hydration status after four weeks of treatment. Further analyses of cognitive measures were conducted by hydration assessment groups at baseline and post-intervention: hydrated (HYD) (USG < 1.020) or dehydrated (DEH) (USG 1.020). No significant differences between hydration status were found between intervention groups. Additionally, no significant improvements were seen for either group, which indicates there is still a need for a novel way to improve hydration status in this population. Multi-dimensional interventions and individualized interventions to improve hydration status in this at-risk population may be more effective. Additional research should be conducted to determine if there is any cognitive performance enhancement associated with dehydration or mild-dehydration by reassessing previous data and conducting future trials.

Those students who participate in club activities can not only enrich their university life, but also enhance their thinking skills. Besides, as stepping into the society after their graduation, they can be proactive and strong at self motivation. Clubs are on the basis of club members and vice versa, the aura and the group dynamics of clubs can also have a profound effect on their members; therefore, it is an important issue to discuss how clubs affect their members while the members are participating in club activities, and how clubs allow their members to blend into their clubs’ big families as well as to complete the mission objectives by working together. This study mainly discusses the effects of organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) based on participation motivation and cohesion of student club members’. Relying on literature reviews to confirm the perspectives and questions of the influences, the study targets at 299 valid questionnaires from 72 student clubs in a University of Science and Technology in central Taiwan and makes the subsequent analysis. Research findings indicate that participation motivation has positive influences on cohesion; cohesion has affirmative effects on OCB; and participation motivation has constructive impacts on OCB as well. As a result, the findings can be helpful when the school authorities counsel students and their clubs to uplift OCB or to improve relative operation of their clubs effectively by encouraging students to take part in club activities. In short, recommendations can be given as references for schools to help their students according to the data analysis.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the organization performance of the student clubs by using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. The DEA model can handle more than one input and output at a time, and this makes it more convenient and objective in analysis. The DEA model is implemented in this study to find out whether it is suitable to evaluate the performance of the student club activities by comparing it with current evaluation methodology and with a set of appropriate evaluation index. The input and output items are determined by references and interviews. Then, the study has been conducted against 39 student clubs that had been running for more than one year in National Taipei University of Technology. Based on the CCR-O and BCC-O models of the DEA, the analysis shows that the highly performed student clubs are different from those evaluated by traditional methodology. The inconsistent result is expected because of the differences in evaluation indexes, tools, and the contents. Because the result can affect the allocation of the resources in the coming year, the annual performance evaluation is important for both Extracurricular Activity Section of the university and student clubs. A student club is an incubator for students to develope their interpersonal relationships, and adapt themselves to social life. Therefore, all universities in Taiwan pay close attention on the developement of student clubs. It thus makes the choice of the evaluation process and tool an important factor. The study also shows that the DEA is an ideal model to evaluate the performance of the student clubs with objectivity, completeness, conveniences, and consistency, which can help the developments of the student clubs in all universities in Taiwan.

Abstract This study employed information technology in ukulele teaching to investigate the effect of an interdisciplinary approach to studying music on junior high school students. Eight Grade-9 students from a junior high ukulele club in New Taipei City were recruited, and a research course that mainly involved teaching ukulele was designed. Through elements such as performance art, component assembling, and improvisation, the researcher incorporated the maker spirit into the process of teaching ukulele. During the research process, the researcher also served as the actual teacher. Assistance from scholars and experts in related fields was incorporated. In addition to reviewing relevant literature in advance, information was collected during the teaching process from sources including the teacher’s teaching notes, interviews with students and collaborative researchers, and students’ worksheets. Experts and scholars’ opinions were taken into consideration throughout the study, and the results were summarized as follows: I. Information technology and electronic ukulele music creation teaching were incorporated to diversify the course model. II. Incorporating information technology and electronic ukulele music creation teaching was beneficial in that: A. From the perspective of music skills, students were able to employ new media to collect arts information; integrate traditional, contemporary, or pop music styles; and to adapt music to express their viewpoints. These achievements satisfied the creative performance and life application requirements—two key contents in the 12-Year Basic Education curriculum—enabling students to be inspired and achieve the highest level of skill creation. B. From the perspective of musical appreciation, students’ learning attitudes toward music and their ability to appreciate value judgment were improved. III. Interdisciplinary, professional, and technical problems that were encountered when applying information technology to electronic ukulele teaching were solved by teacher–student cooperative learning. Based on the research results, suggestions for future research implementing interdisciplinary teaching that incorporates information technology and music teaching were proposed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among the student’s participating motivations, involvement and learning achievement of campus organizations university student clubs, and to discuss the differences among three of all base on personal background. The research samples were the students who study in Chaoyang University of Technology and participate in campus organizations student clubs via the method of cluster sampling. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed, and with 426 valid responses, the effective collection rate is 85.2%. According to the purpose of this study, data analysis included descriptive statistic, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, multiple simultaneous regression analysis statistic. After statistical analysis, the findings were as follows: About the participating of campus organizations, the mainly participators are the lower grade female students who rent an apartment outside of campus and the most popular clubs are recreational and sports associations. The highest level of participating motivated scale was “social needs”. The highest level of involvement scale was “attractiveness”. The highest level of learning achievement was “affective achievement”. There were significant differences among participating motivations, involvement and learning achievement by different personal background. As a result, the involvement intention of participators could be positive predicted by the “spiritual needs”, “self-efficacy needs”, “skills needs” and the “social needs” within the category of the participating motivated. The learning achievement of participators could be positive influence by the “skills needs”, “spiritual needs” and the “self-efficacy needs” within the category of the participating motivated and also can be positive influence by the “cognitive”, “behavioral”, “attractiveness”, “self-expression” and the “living centrality” within the category of the involvement. Based on the results, this research would provide practical applications and recommendations as references to the campus organizations managers to develop future management strategies.

Rodriguez, Erika Marie. "Identifying women at risk for polycystic ovary syndrome using a mobile health application." Thesis, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/36694.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disrupting disorder affecting at least 10 percent of reproductive-aged women. In many cases, women develop comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic disorders. In North America and Europe, it takes several years and multiple doctors for women to receive a diagnosis of PCOS. This results in lost time for risk-reducing interventions. Menstrual tracking applications are one potential tool to alert women of their risk for PCOS and prompt them to seek further evaluation from a medical professional. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to develop the Irregular Cycles Feature (ICF) on the mobile phone application Clue®, which generates a probability of a user’s risk for PCOS. The secondary aim was to assess the accuracy of the tool by testing the feature on virtual test subjects. METHODS: A literature review was conducted to generate a list of signs and symptoms of PCOS. Probabilities were assigned to each variable and built into a Bayesian Network. The Irregular Cycles Feature, an adaptive questionnaire, was then developed in order to detect high-risk PCOS patients. The ICF detected at risk Clue® users through self-reported menstrual cycles and answers to medical history questions. Upon completion of the questionnaire, a Result Screen is displayed to the user. The Screen is a summary of the individual’s probability of having PCOS. For each eligible user, a Doctor’s Report is also generated. This is a screen containing information regarding menstrual irregularities and a brief medical history to be used by a medical professional in order to make a final diagnosis. Both the Result Screen and Doctor’s Report disclose information about PCOS and detailed explanations for consulting a medical provider. A brief statistical validation was then performed to compare the output of the network to predictions made by a physician-scientist using a correlation coefficient, a p-value, and a Pearson’s coefficient. RESULTS: The Irregular Cycles Feature successfully predicts probability of PCOS based on eight test cases. The correlation between the network’s calculation and the assessment made by a board-certified reproductive endocrinology/infertility physician-scientist was 0.82, with a p-value of less than 0.05. The Pearson’s coefficient was calculated to be 0.69. These values indicate that the ICF made statistically significant predictions when compared to the physician-scientist. CONCLUSIONS: The ICF provides consumer-friendly ways to improve interactions between medical providers and patients. The tool can be adapted to capture other causes of menstrual irregularities and can serve as an important mechanism for drawing attention to potentially hazardous health problems. Further validation studies will be conducted to confirm the utility of the ICF with Clue® users, particularly amongst those who receive an official diagnosis from a medical professional.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the activity of a robotics school club of a school located in the urban center of Funchal, Escola Secundária de Francisco Franco. Through an ethnographic methodology, we sought to characterize the culture and the pedagogical dynamics emerging from this learning environment saturated with technology and creative ideas. The underlying discussion was set against the background of constructivist / constructionist learning contexts, as well as the role that technology can play as a driver of pedagogical innovation. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first, the literature is reviewed, discussing the themes of learning, pedagogical innovation and the role of advanced technologies in the creation of new learning contexts. The second part discusses the methodology of the empirical study, characterizes the locus of the investigation (the school and the club) and describes and interprets the emerging culture of the dynamics of the participants of that extracurricular project.
