During the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic, around the world, evidence is mounting as to the unenveness of impacts across communities. There are disproportionately more impacts on people who are elderly, economically marginalized, immunologically compromised, and members of racialized and equity-seeking communities. As part of the COVID-19 response, virus transmission mitigation efforts including the use of new technology tools like contract tracing apps are being explored. There are significant implications to the use of these tools, including how they impact different community mem

The Industrial Revolution was an era that began in Britain around 1850s, where production shifted from hand tools to complex machines that were powered by water and steam. The era provides clues about how societies transform with technological advancement, which has brought to reality some of the fictional marvels that were once restricted to comic books. Interestingly, we are living the reality of some of those marvels in this era. Also, some of McLuhan's theoretical projection of the 1960s about technology shrinking the world into a global village have come true. These realities provided the

Abstract:
AbstractAccording to “A Scorecard for Humanity,” a report from the Copenhagen Consensus Center, our world gains every time an individual is educated, and our world pays a price when people go illiterate. In the future, those regions and nations of the world that manage to educate its people would gain, whereas those that do not pay much attention to this crucial aspect would continue to suffer losses, hidden in plain sight. Hence, by 2050, we suggest that though the world would have made tremendous progress in basic education, illiteracy would persist with almost 500 million uneducated in the world. Illiteracy shall be most concentrated in the regions of Africa and South Asia, whereas most other nations would move toward a total eradication. However, there would also be a systemic change in the higher education sector across the globe, as the age cohort of 18 to 24 years in Europe would shrink, but in South Asia and Africa, this would continue to grow. There would also be a disruption of the current pedagogic and regimental learning systems toward flatter, flexible, and open systems based on research in learning sciences. Technology would also come by to play a larger role, where education would be driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and big data—resulting in complete personalization of curriculum and methodology focusing on each individual's minute needs.

AbstractThe “postdigital condition” is characterized by an entanglement of digital and analogue media technologies and practices, with two of today’s primary societal challenges being a loss of privacy in data-driven media practices and the implicit power relations within media constellations that determine who is able to participate how. Education plays a crucial role in this context, being both the sphere in which reflection on these challenges can take place and also being itself based on digital media constellations that must in turn be reflected upon. This chapter considers two workshop concepts that facilitate such reflection: one based on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA), based on risk management and the tradition of technology impact assessments, and an original approach for reflection on media constellations that has its roots in media and practice theory.

Abstract:
Today, higher education is experiencing significant changes in its recruitment, retention, graduation, and accreditation. Faculty professional development is considered a key for the success of Generation Z students. As a result, faculty are interested to modify their teaching environment. More and more faculty are flipping their traditional courses and offering either hybrid or online courses. Blended learning means that students receive instruction in both face-to-face and online environments. Embedded within the concept is an assumption that blended teaching environments also give students some control over the pace, flow, or focus of their learning activities. Also, blended learning prepares students for full online courses. Research indicates that empowering students to have organization in their education leads to many positive outcomes, including that students do better in inequality of access situations, are able to personalize their learning and achieve regardless of ability, and build dispositional skills, such as executive functioning, perseverance, self-awareness, and tolerance for uncertainty, that many believe are necessary to thrive in current and future societies. This chapter explains current practices and the potential of digital learning initiatives to teach Generation Z in the technology-driven world.
