Abstract:
Manufacturing companies are facing many challenges with globalisation, changing customer demands and technology development. In order to stay competitive, manufacturing companies have to constantly develop their processes and products, and at the same time generating innovations to meet future demands. This increasing demand for development is shifting the generation of innovations from single units to collaboration within the whole organisation. Technology roadmap is a strategic management tool to help organisations map the future and identify potential products and technology, determining needed resource allocations to meet future demands. Research regarding Technology roadmaps has previously been associated with exploratory innovations and development, not mentioning or discussing the use of it for exploitative development. This study will investigate Technology roadmaps for exploitative development, based on a single case study in a large high technology manufacturing company.  The results shows that manufacturing units have troubles with deciding appropriate detailed level in the map, and the purpose for exploitative development to illustrating what needs to be done in order to meet future demands, rather on aligning product development with long term business strategy that is associated with exploratory development. The findings from this study put the theoretical implications for Technology roadmap in a new categorization of Exploitative development and the need of research regarding different hierarchical roadmaps within an organisation. Practical implications from the study are highlighting challenges and purposes for exploitative development units to adapt and use technology roadmaps, and that there are major differences between exploratory development and exploitative development with designing and purpose of the technology roadmap.

Abstract:
Technology roadmaps are useful for much longer technology planning periods in which past performance might not determine the future. They are also very useful in translating strategies into implementable actions, with clear targets and timelines. A growing number of organisations, industry associations, national governments and international agencies are also using technology roadmaps for future technology planning and analysis. This research responds to the complexities associated with technology roadmap development in South Africa and other developing countries. It seeks to investigate whether the predominant literature on technology roadmaps and technology roadmapping is suitable for developing countries or if the existing frameworks need to be customised to suit framework conditions for developing countries. The following are the main research questions: 1) what are the unique framework conditions for innovation in developing countries and 2) what is a suitable technology roadmapping framework for developing countries? The research sub-questions associated with the first research question are 1) what are the main priorities for innovation in South Africa and 2) what are the actual/ perceived innovation competitive advantages for South Africa? The research sub-questions associated with the second research question are: 1) what is the nature and characteristics of technology roadmaps in South Africa and 2) what are the critical factors for successful technology roadmaps in South Africa? Relevant literature reviewed in this research includes knowledge evolution of the technology roadmapping field, nature and impact of emerging technologies as well as technology management in developing countries. The mainstream technology roadmapping literature is useful in guiding technology roadmapping efforts in developing countries, although the intention of this study was also to determine its ‘fitness for purpose’. A literature review led to the development of the theoretical framework for technology roadmapping in developing countries. The key elements of this framework are the multilevel perspective analysis based on complex systems theory, transition management theory and leapfrogging as technology catch-up strategy. The methodology adopted for this research was informed by a theoretical framework developed and a literature review. The research design is based on post-positivism research philosophy (realism perspective). As a result, both a quantitative survey and qualitative interviews were used to collect data. Data collection tools used were online quantitative survey as well as semi-structured qualitative interviews. The information collected from qualitative interviews along with secondary data (documents analysis) were used to assist in interpreting patterns of responses received from quantitative survey data. The five deduced analytical propositions regarding the innovation dynamics in South Africa, as a case for developing countries, address the key issues to consider in transitioning the complex innovation systems. Building from the findings regarding the innovation dynamics within the developing countries, the additional five propositions provide some foundation and principles for technology roadmapping in developing countries. These incorporate usage of the third generation technology roadmaps in the developing countries, importance of timing the window of opportunity, the recommended usage of scenario planning, a balance between involvement of stakeholders from dominant product-technology platform and those who are transition-oriented and the importance of monitoring and updating the transition-based technology roadmaps. The ten analytical propositions deduced were further tested and demonstrated through the analysis of sociotechnical transitions taking place within the energy, mining and water sectors in South Africa. The common innovation landscape factors that are incorporated for long-term technology planning in these sectors are the economic climate, government policy and public discourse. All three plans also begin with a transition phase that entails predevelopment of multiple emerging technologies that are characteristic of the third generation technology roadmaps.

Abstract:
The present study presents a draft national CCT (Clean Coal Technologies) and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology roadmap to policy makers. Various technical and non-technical (economic and social) challenges that currently prevent CCT and CCS from being a widely used commercial technology are discussed and the goals for each research pathway are defined. The process of creating the roadmap started with a review and assessment of the existing national and international technology roadmaps which represent a global picture of the state of the art and national and international plans for future on CCT and CCS research development, demonstration and deployment (R&
D&
D). Following this step, the national situation, capacities and priorities were examined. Finally, R&
D&
D actions discussed in the existing roadmaps and/or new actions were carefully selected and suggested as a draft Turkish CCT and CCS Roadmap that needs further development and discussion by the input of interdisciplinary national stakeholders. As a conclusion a number of technical and non-technical suggestions are delivered.

Kim, Mun Jung. "Industry Technology Roadmap for the Flushable Pre-moistened Nonwoven Wipes Industry." NCSU, 2009. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-10012009-081723/.

Full text
Abstract:
The body of this research seeks to create an Industry Technology Roadmap for one segment of the U.S. textile and apparel industry, specifically, the flushable pre-moistened wipes industry. Industry Technology Roadmapping is a new type of strategic planning method. Previous technology forecasting methods allowed planners to identify several alternate future states or scenarios and provided uncertainty in either product needs or technological developments. In contrast, Industry Technology Roadmapping allows a company or an industry to proactively plan and prepare for its future by offering future goals, critical requirements and, finally, solutions to achieve the future goals. In addition, Roadmapping works as an effective organizational learning and knowledge creation tool and induces collaboration and new partnerships among companies as well. Currently, flushable pre-moistened nonwoven wipes emerge as new textile products and attempt to expand their future markets. During this research, industry expert interviews and surveys, consumer surveys, heavy user surveys, creation of an Internet blog, and literature review including a patent analysis were conducted for data gathering. The resulting Roadmap provides the nonwoven wipes industry valuable information about the potential future markets, required properties, the current environment of flushable wipes, including challenges, strength, and opportunities, and the solutions. These can help the U.S. nonwoven wipes industry to do informed investment into research, development and manufacturing facilities.

This thesis explores the measures for the Japanese electric power utilities to meet the Kyoto Target, and the technological development of the coal thermal power generation to meet the further abatement of the carbon dioxide beyond Kyoto. To meet the Kyoto Target, the present measure by the Japanese government to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in the energy sector relies much on the development of the nuclear power generation. Therefore, the current delay of nuclear power development, mainly due to the lack of public acceptance for the nuclear energy, and, consequently, the increase of the carbon dioxide emissions are crucial problems to be solved to the achieve the target. In this paper, possible measures to achieve the abatement target of the carbon dioxide emissions are examined. Among the five measures, changing dispatch from high carbon emitting capacity to low emitting one provides a sufficient abatement with relatively low cost. Other measures, like wind power or re-powering of existing thermal power plant require the higher abatement cost or fail to provide sufficient quantities. Looking at the scenario beyond the Kyoto Target after 2012, further reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions calls for the technological development. Since the uncertainty of the nuclear power development will still remain in the future, and other measures including re-dispatch and re-powering can not afford to provide further reduction, the development of the generating technologies is one of the crucial measures to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. Especially, the technologies for coal thermal power, which are expected to be the most stable and inexpensive energy resources in a few decade, affect the strategy for the global warming. The developing technologies, the coal
(cont.) gasification and the carbon dioxide sequestration are examined in the latter chapter.

Roux, Rina Nicolene. "A Roadmap for the Titanium Metal Industry of South Africa." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/75057.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African titanium metal industry is underdeveloped and has a fragmented value chain. The aim of this study was to investigate fragmentation within the local titanium metal value chain by using industry technology roadmapping as a tool to comment on the completeness of each value chain stage. Roadmapping for the period 2021 to 2030 was applied to a novel value chain produced for the local titanium metal industry. Within the fragmented value chain, it was indicated that from the eight identified stages only four were established locally. The identified stages of the titanium metal value chain were: stage 1 - mineral reserves; stage 2 - slag; stage 3 – TiCl4; stage 4 – sponge; stage 5 – melted products; stage 6 – mill products; stage 7 – metal powder production and stage 8 – metal powder products. Stages 1, 2, 6 and 8 are already established in South Africa. The roadmapping type selected to address the fragmented South African titanium metal value chain was an industry technology roadmap. This type of roadmap focuses on forecasting the development, commercialisation and deployment of new technologies. The overall industry roadmap was designed using individual roadmaps for the value chain stages. These individual roadmaps were used as a guideline on what to include and what to exclude from the overall industry roadmap. The technology roadmap layout consisted of five layers namely market, product, technology, R&D, and resources. These roadmapping layers were applied to each stage of the titanium metal value chain resulting in the production of individual roadmaps for each stage. The roadmap model was based on the three fundamental questions in roadmapping: “Where are we now?” addressing the current state of each value chain stage, “Where do we want to go?” addressing the vision elements for each value chain stage and “How will we get there?” addressing how the vision elements would be achieved for each value chain stage. The methodology used in this study relied on data collection from two main sources. The first was primary data collected through conducting interviews and a survey. The main aim of the interviews (conducted with industry and R&D experts) was to establish a vision element for each of the titanium metal value chain stages which was validated though the survey. Secondary data was then combined with the collected expert driven data in order to follow the selected roadmapping approach and complete a roadmap for each of the value chain stages following the specified layers (top-down approach). The vision elements were then combined to obtain an overall South African titanium metal value chain vision. The consolidated vision, based on what should be included in the South African titanium metal value chain and what not, was used as driver for compiling the overall South African titanium metal industry roadmap. This was done by considering and combining the required actions needed from the value chain stage roadmaps (top-down visioning approach) to achieve the identified overall roadmap (bottom-up visioning approach). The newly developed vision for the South African titanium metal industry is: South Africa should continue to mine and upgrade titanium mineral concentrates in a sustainable and efficient manner. The country should commit to the establishment of two additional stages within the titanium metal value chain, which is TiCl4 production and titanium metal powder production. Capacity and expertise within the two already developed downstream stages (mill product and powder product production) should be expanded for both the local and the export markets. Within the mill product market, the focus should be on producing products for the medical, chemical and aerospace industries while the powder product markets should focus on medical, aerospace, leisure and automotive industries. In addition to the vision and roadmap establishment, other outcomes of this study indicated that the South African titanium metal industry is fragmented and should remain fragmented over the next decade. This thesis presents novel research on the production of a roadmap for a fragmented industry. To the best knowledge of the author, no other industry roadmap approach has first considered the production of individual roadmaps in a fragmented value chain and then combine them into a single overall industry technology roadmap. South Africa can apply the newly obtained titanium industry vision and roadmap, since there was no prior vision that addressed the development of the industry’s fragmented value chain. The newly produced roadmap can be used to advance and develop the South African titanium metal industry in order to improve local value addition to the already existing resources.

Abstract:
Home Automation (HA) has emerged as a prominent ¯eld for researchers and in- vestors confronting the challenge of penetrating the average home user market with products and services emerging from technology based vision. In spite of many technology contri- butions, there is a latent demand for a®ordable and pragmatic assistive technologies for pro-active handling of complex lifestyle related problems faced by home users. This study has pioneered to develop an Initial Technology Roadmap for HA (ITRHA) that formulates a need based vision of 10-15 years, identifying market, product and technology investment opportunities, focusing on those aspects of HA contributing to e±cient management of home and personal life. The concept of Family Life Cycle is developed to understand the temporal needs of family. In order to formally describe a coherent set of family processes, their relationships, and interaction with external elements, a reference model named Fam- ily System is established that identi¯es External Entities, 7 major Family Processes, and 7 subsystems-Finance, Meals, Health, Education, Career, Housing, and Socialisation. Anal- ysis of these subsystems reveals Soft, Hard and Hybrid processes. Rectifying the lack of formal methods for eliciting future user requirements and reassessing evolving market needs, this study has developed a novel method called Requirement Elicitation of Future Users by Systems Scenario (REFUSS), integrating process modelling, and scenario technique within the framework of roadmapping. The REFUSS is used to systematically derive process au- tomation needs relating the process knowledge to future user characteristics identi¯ed from scenarios created to visualise di®erent futures with richly detailed information on lifestyle trends thus enabling learning about the future requirements. Revealing an addressable market size estimate of billions of dollars per annum this research has developed innovative ideas on software based products including Document Management Systems facilitating automated collection, easy retrieval of all documents, In- formation Management System automating information services and Ubiquitous Intelligent System empowering the highly mobile home users with ambient intelligence. Other product ideas include robotic devices of versatile Kitchen Hand and Cleaner Arm that can be time saving. Materialisation of these products require technology investment initiating further research in areas of data extraction, and information integration as well as manipulation and perception, sensor actuator system, tactile sensing, odour detection, and robotic controller. This study recommends new policies on electronic data delivery from service providers as well as new standards on XML based document structure and format.

Bekker, Michiel Christiaan. "A review of Sasol Technology Engineering division's strategic roadmap and the implementation thereof." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/5032.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 1999.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sasol Technology Engineering Division (SED) is part of the Sasol Group of Companies and was formally established in 1983. The organisation's immediate focus was to render technical and project management support to the operating petrochemical units of Sasol 2 and Sasol 3. During the late 1980's and early 1990's various external drivers appeared that necessitated a review and adjustment to Sasol's strategic direction. Sasol decided to unlock the value in raw materials and embarked on an investment program in major chemical production facilities. With this new drive towards implementing large, multi-million Rand, projects, SED had to re-assess its competencies and focus in order to support this new strategic drive of Sasol. During 1995 an extensive management buy-out (MBO) exercise was concluded whereby most of the technical discipline departments were outsourced. The idea was that all modification and operations support projects be handled by the MBO's. This enabled SED to focus on large projects. With the new strategic direction in place SED launched a Balanced Scorecard (BSG) exercise to convert this strategy into specific goals and communicating the strategy to all employees. This exercise led to the development of a document called the SED Strategic Roadmap. This document explained the goals and interventions required for success until 2003. The review and re-visiting of the SED Strategic Roadmap formed the main focus of this study project. A serious concern identified from the outset was that no realised strategy was drafted before the strategic intent was formalised. Therefore, in order to review the SED Strategic Roadmap a study was done on the realised organisational situation of SED by means of the results of various organisational studies done by consultants. With a realised situation formalised the development and contents of the SED Strategic Roadmap were explained. Following this explanation a broad literature review was conducted to grasp the latest thinking around the management science of strategy. With the realised strategy and theory as background the mere reason for SED's existence was unravelled. A very important finding was that SED should rather focus on improving its operational effectiveness instead of formalising a strategy. SED remains a supporting division that should underline and align itself with the strategic needs of Sasol. For reviewing purposes a "new" set of goals was identified that is closer linked with the purpose of SED. An intervention was allocated to each "new" goal to ensure focused implementation of every "new" goal. A proposal was tabled to conduct and implement the interventions in terms of project-based management, meaning that all interventions are handled as projects with budgets, time spans and specified outcomes. The listed "new" goals serve as an alternative to those in the SED Strategic Roadmap. The "new" goals support the vision of SED and provide the opportunity to excel in improving its operational effectiveness.

Abstract:
Modern world dynamics in which competitivity is the key word has forced organizations to structure themselves in a way to elaborate Strategic Technology Plans which consider the creation of research and innovation projects in short, medium and long terms. In this context it is up to Technology Manager to administrate and allocate the organization\'s limited financial resources in initiatives which enable opportunities to introduce innovations in the market which could add value either in financial terms and or for sustainability and Company\'s image. In the past Technology Strategic Plans which were based on Innovation Managers and Top Administration experience and intuition have produced good results, but in dynamic and globally interconnected markets there is no margin for mistakes under the penalty to compromise business continuity. There is a need to use Methodologies which enable the Technology Manager to balance the risks and success possibilities when implementing Technology Innovation programs and this reflection impelled the author to establish the following objectives for this research: a) Identify and apply Technological and Forecast analysis methodologies using a range of tools like Morphological Analysis, Delphi Method, Decision Matrix and Technological Road mapping which could allow the elaboration of Technological Roadmap applied to a specific technological scope and that could serve as well as a work routine for other technology branches.; b) Show to the reader the lessons learned in this research\'s process (right points and mistakes) as well as recommendations for this techniques use and suggestions for future studies. A specific product from Magneti Marelli in which this research\'s author works as Innovation Manager has been chosen as a theme for this action researches, that is, the Strut. The abovementioned methodologies composition has generated a rich data bank. The methodology implementation over these data generated a Technological Roadmap aiming to reduce weight in Struts. The right points and mistakes observed during research process have been shown as well suggestions for future studies. This is considered a material with a great academic and managerial value since the developed methodology can be applied total or partially in any technology field.

Abstract:
Today’s society is standing in front of a revolution where fossil energy should be replaced with renewable energy. Governmental agencies and policy makers have formed goals and regulations to become greener, and the organisation Fossil Free Sweden has published roadmaps for fossil free competitiveness. Therefore, this report has connected Paroc’s operations with a roadmap for fossil free competitiveness to form a strategic environmental plan. Early, it was recognized that the field was big and a limitation to CO2-emissions during production were established. The facts were gathered mostly throughout literature studies, scientific publications/articles, and personal communication with personnel at Paroc/Owens Corning. The results gave a description over fossil free competitiveness for the construction sector, previous, and current sustainability efforts at Paroc. After that, the report lifted suggestions of modifications to the mainstream process. Focus laid on the reduction of coke, propane, and dolomite. Later, the report discussed a possible strategy to become fossil free by 2045. It found out that there are many approaches to become climate neutral. Moreover, a need for practical testing of the solutions in the mainstream processes, and that emissions can be calculated in an absolute of relative way.

Amer, Muhammad. "Extending Technology Roadmap through Fuzzy Cognitive Map-based Scenarios: The Case of the Wind Energy Sector of Pakistan." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/999.

Full text
Abstract:
In this modern era, energy is a key element required for sustainable development and prosperity of a society. Pakistan is an energy deficient country facing problems due to the shortage of over 4000 MW of electricity. The national energy sector is heavily dependent on imported fossil-fuel resources. The energy crisis is negatively affecting all economic and business activities, and it is widely recognized as a severe obstacle to growth and poverty reduction in the country. Establishment of wind farms can help to overcome the energy crisis. In this research, a national level wind energy roadmap is developed through scenario planning. Multiple future scenarios are developed using the fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) approach. This research has extended technology roadmapping through FCM-based scenario analysis. Building scenarios with FCM is a very new approach, and for the first time FCM-based scenarios are developed for the wind energy sector of Pakistan. Based on these multiple scenarios, a technology roadmap has been developed. This research approach is applied to the wind energy sector of Pakistan as a case study. This approach has been used to establish objectives and national targets of the roadmap. Then in a systematic way, critical roadmap barriers are identified against each scenario, and appropriate action items have been proposed to overcome barriers and promote deployment of wind energy projects in Pakistan. The objectives and targets of the roadmap have been translated into action items. The technology roadmap has four layers: strategic objectives, targets, barriers, and action items. Expert panels have been utilized to develop scenarios and technology roadmaps. Validation of this research is also carried out using experts. This new approach has helped to develop a robust roadmap and enabled anticipation of a wide range of possible future outcomes. This research fills an important gap by combining scenario planning and technology roadmapping techniques in future studies, and it has enhanced flexibility of the developed roadmap. Moreover, for the first time multiple and plausible FCM-based scenarios are developed, which combine the benefits of both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Moreover, the technology roadmap for the wind energy sector of Pakistan is developed with a comprehensive study of practical obstacles and barriers towards deployment of wind energy technology. The research findings suggest that policy, financial, economic, lack of competition with conventional power plants, and technical are the most critical barriers towards deployment of wind energy projects in the country. Appropriate action items required to overcome the roadmap barriers against each scenario are also proposed in the developed roadmap. The experts also assigned responsibilities for the key roadmap action items to the major stakeholders.

What benefits can technology bring to the finance industry? Can it disrupt the oldest medium of exchange in the world, physical currency? If it can, are there any benefits to it, and most importantly, how would you do it? Our research aims to answer those questions. It looks at various sources that have spent a significant amount of time explaining why transitioning from a cash-dependent market into a cash-lite market is beneficial. Furthermore, it builds on this concepts and looks at the largest ever attempt at this transition and examines the benefits, and challenges it has faced. We deep dive into the Indian demonetization experiment. Most importantly our research draws five-key insights for how India is making this transition, and later we use those insights as a framework to examine a different market, Panama and draw a clear set of recommendations for that country to make such a transition. The framework, however, is to be utilized as a lens for which any market can be analyzed, and such a transition can be made.

Abstract:
The mobile revolution has had a huge effect on our lives in all spheres. To ensure its continued evolution patents have played a part in protecting rightsholders from infringement cases by implementers. Also, many companies in the ICT industry focusing on innovation have come together to create standards, which ensure interoperability and compatibility of devices whilst supporting an ecosystem that is beneficial for both innovators and implementers as well as the consumers. Despite challenges (hold-up and hold-out) arising, regulators and standards organizations have created policies to regulate the processes involved. This has seen the introduction of FRAND and other international agreements. Using 3GPP as an illustration, this thesis highlights the efforts that are poured in research and development to even come up with a set standard that is universally applicable. This thesis gives an analysis on the underlying principles and processes that allow for standardization. It focuses on the relationship between patents and standards and how a strong IPR system has an impact on the progress of technology innovation. This thesis will highlight the benefits that arise from an ecosystem that is predevelopment and analyses the legal cases that have been dealt with over the years. Several cases have been brought before the courts in different jurisdictions to address issues relating to standardization and the ruling have seen a change in direction on the way to approach FRAND. The landmark case Huawei v ZTE paved a way for Europe’s balanced approach on licensing agreements and now courts have realized the importance of both parties to actively participate in good faith negotiations. The same has happened in the United states where after eBay v MercExchange the courts are now realizing hold-out is equally detrimental as hold-up and can create complications in licensing. The courts are now reluctant in offering injunctive relief without efforts from both parties to perform licensing agreements. As the technological boom continues in an upward trajectory it is crucial now, more than ever for Africa to join in and leverage the available laws to benefit its SMEs and ICT industry and strengthen its IPR system. Legend has it that the stronger the protection of own technological know-how, the higher the likelihood to join formal standardization processes to leverage the value of the technological portfolios. The empirical findings establish that if African countries develop their IPR system, this can be a source of encouragement for innovators to engage in global standardization.

Hirose, Yuta. "Technology venture emergence characterisation." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/273663.

Full text
Abstract:
Technology entrepreneurs and managers aim to navigate emerging technology ventures and innovations towards successful commercialisation and business development, often over long periods of time. However, this is challenging due to high uncertainties associated with planning and navigating relevant market and business drivers, technological resources and capabilities, and applications. Failure to understand and manage these uncertainties appropriately can lead to undesired consequences and poor outcomes in the realisation of value creation and capture. This research firstly built a knowledge base of technology ventures by conducting a literature review, enabling the development of a conceptual retrospective roadmapping framework as the basis for characterising the emergence of technology ventures. This leads to an analysis of 13 case studies, characterising phases, transitions, patterns, enablers and barriers associated with the emergence of technology ventures. A conceptual model, the so-called ‘emergence archetypes’, was then developed by conducting an in-depth analysis with a further 19 case studies. The concept provides practical insights regarding how emerging technology ventures can be exposed to different levels of technological and market uncertainties along the journey of technology commercialisation and business development. Finally, a strategy visualisation tool and process have been designed based on the research outputs, and a focus group was then conducted with industrial practitioners to review and evaluate the research outputs for practical use in industry. In total, 32 case studies and a focus group have been conducted in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Japan, Australia and the United States. Overall, this research demonstrates that characterising technology venture emergence, by applying roadmapping principles, provides significant implications for both researchers and practitioners of strategy and innovation. Success or failure of emerging technology ventures, in terms of value creation and capture, is not only directly related to products or services, but more broadly to the innovation systems in which the technology ventures operate. By demonstrating the characterisation of technology venture emergence, the conceptualisation of emergence archetypes and the strategy visualisation tool and process development, this research shows that applying roadmapping is an appropriate method to characterise and improve emerging technology venturing practices, supporting value creation and capture.

Bondeson, Per, and Stefan Liss. "Roadmap of Virtual Commissioning Inertia : An Investigation of Technical and Non-TechnicalFields of Action." Thesis, KTH, Industriell produktion, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-232436.

Abstract:
Virtual Commissioning (VC) enables simulation of the combined work of mechanical, electrical, robot andautomation engineers prior to commissioning of the real production equipment. Hence, testing of areaslike collisions, PLC and robot code can be performed in risk free virtual environments and thus, errorscan be detected and corrected early in the development phase of the production equipment. Effectively, both the time and the cost of commissioning will decrease significantly. In addition, advantages likeoperator training, increased knowledge about the equipment, a more mature and optimized system priorto installation is enabled. Nowadays, the commissioning phase of a production system accounts for 25%of the total project time and research has shown that VC can decrease the commissioning time with upto 75%.However, despite all advantages and existing solutions that enables VC, it is not a standard amongmanufacturing companies nor production equipment providers to use VC today. Therefore, we wantedto investigate why VC is not a standard today. There are many barriers and challenges that must be solved prior to successful implementation of VC. Aglobal survey concerning simulation concluded that eight fields of action must be addressed in order tofacilitate the use of simulation. These eight fields address barriers and challenges and they are assumedto apply for VC too. The fields are categorized into four technical and four non-technical fields of action. The technical concerns: model re-use, modeling efficiency, integration and usability. The non-technicalconcerns: work-flow, education, acceptance and collaboration. The purpose of this project is to investigate barriers that prevent VC from becoming widely used inthe industry. Thus, each field of action was researched to better understand why VC is not commonlyused. In addition, the objective of the project is to provide an investigation regarding the technical andnon-technical fields of actions and how each of the parties along the value chain relate to each field. Therefore, the following research question was formed. What barriers are preventing VC from gainingmomentum and becoming widely used by the industry?Through our interviews we did not find any company that currently use VC.We conclude that it generallyis the non-technical fields of action that contain barriers that prevent VC from becoming a standard inthe industry. Especially, it is the organizational related barriers that are the most severe. Nowadays, there exist technical solutions that enables VC and the technical fields of action mainly treat modelingefficiency improvements. However, interoperability is considered to be the most severe technical barriertowards VC and is therefore an important area to improve. Nonetheless, we conclude that the technicalbarriers are considered less severe compared to the non-technical in terms of enabling VC to becomingwidely used.

Minnie, Erick Francois. "Technology roadmap for improvement of the North–West University neutron monitor system of the Centre for Space Research / Erick F. Minnie." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4829.

Full text
Abstract:
The Centre for Space Research (formerly known as the Unit for Space Physics) at the North–West University manages the operation, maintenance and data gathering of four neutron monitors. This is done in order to indirectly study the patterns and reactivity of the Sun. Some of these neutron monitors have been operating from the late 1950’s while not receiving much attention regarding technology upgrades, but were kept alive by merely maintaining the bits and pieces that started giving problems. This is all about to change due to this thesis that will serve as a Technological Roadmap for the Improvement of the North–West University Neutron Monitor System of the Centre for Space Research. It begins by looking at the essential parts needed to count cosmic rays - the primary particles that are affected by the Sun’s intensity and reactivity - and register their collision–products, neutrons. Then it covers the Centre for Space Research’s neutron monitor systems as a whole, including the physical locations up to the logistics needed to change a part. The systems analysis of the neutron monitor operation was done in order to determine the current neutron monitor operational functions and to determine the system’s risk profile. A complete FMECA breakdown of worst–case scenarios and their impact on the system was done, and the mitigating actions were discussed in order to minimize the effect a specific failure mode will have. The project ends by giving a couple of technological and design suggestions in order to maintain and upgrade the system.

The technology forecast and management methods have been considered by academics and managers important tools to support technology development. Generally the organizations, which are worried about this issues, needs data and information to look ahead and clarify technologies course before it happens. Considering that development s time has become shorter, these kind of methodologies may turn more and more important. Despite of these matters, it s rare to find papers and related cases to this subject in Brazil. That s why this study has the objective of collect and discuss methodologies, and right after that, compare the Technology Roadmap (TRM) to the CNPDIA s method of technology forecast and management. This TRM method is frequently presented in the related magazines. The work realized has compared the dimension of the TRM, considering some extras observations. These extras looks offered a more complete view and understanding of the environment in which the technology activities took place. The expected intention was to collaborate by analyzing some of the CNPDIA s characterizes. One extra hope is to inspire some discussion in the unit observed, based on this work.

Ekebring, Oskar, and Mattias Eriksson. "Managing a transformation towards industry 4.0 : A study within the bus manufacturing industry." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-78855.

Full text
Abstract:
Prior research suggests that industry 4.0 could bring numerous benefits to firms manufacturing operations. Despite industry 4.0’s overwhelming popularity, there is considerable confusion surrounding how to approach a transformation, and additionally how it will affect organizations. Bus manufacturing has seen minor advancements in initiating change towards industry 4.0 due to characteristics with low volumes, high product varieties, high complexity and a large variety of customer adaptations. This thesis intends to give clarity to the opportunities and challenges that industry 4.0 technologies entail for bus manufacturing operations. Furthermore, contribute with a roadmap for how to manage a transformation towards industry 4.0 directed for bus manufacturing. The thesis was conducted studying a case using the process of systematic combining. Qualitative methods were applied to address the research questions, collecting data from ten interviews with operational- and manufacturing managers. Empirical findings indicate that the characteristics of bus manufacturing influence the industry 4.0 technologies that are applicable and suited for implementation. The findings suggest opportunities in terms of increased production efficiency, improved flexibility and reduced takt times with data management and real-time capabilities from adapting data management, cloud technology and sensors. Other opportunities such as virtualization with digital twin and virtual training were also suggested to enable factory simulations and virtual representations of manufacturing stations. Prominent challenges identified were lack of knowledge regarding industry 4.0 technologies, data analytics, how to motivate investments, system integration and using robotics in the bus manufacturing operations. Furthermore, the proposed roadmap for how bus manufacturing can manage a transformation towards industry 4.0 consists of eight steps that include important factors identified from the study such as vision, determination, barriers, responsibility, consistency and working in small steps. This study’s theoretical contribution is providing knowledge about industry 4.0 in the context of bus manufacturing operations. The findings suggest that knowledge is a primary factor for managing a transformation towards industry 4.0, where educating and engaging personnel could facilitate the change work. Further, the results of this study lend support to the argument that approaching industry 4.0 is dependent on the organization and industry. The study also emphasizes that future research should focus on establishing a uniform definition of industry 4.0, and further examine what the costs for a transformation towards industry 4.0 could necessitate for bus manufacturing operations.

Box, Stephanie. "Arterial roadway traffic data collection using bluetooth technology." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/42778.

Abstract:
The use of Bluetooth technology for gathering traffic data is becoming increasingly popular due to the large volume of data that can be gathered at a relatively low cost. The limited number of devices in discoverable mode and potential long discovery time of the Bluetooth devices creates an opportunity for evaluating the sensor array setup that can maximize the sample of devices identified. This thesis investigates several factors that have a significant impact on the quality of the data obtained using Bluetooth, including the number of Bluetooth readers, orientation of the Bluetooth antennas, position of the readers relative to one another, and the location of the Bluetooth stations. The thesis begins with an overview of Bluetooth technology and literature review on the use of Bluetooth in previous traffic studies. Next, the methodology for the setup of the Bluetooth system and the four tests performed to evaluate the factors affecting the quality of the data are described. Through the results of these tests, it was observed that a "flat" antenna orientation allows for the greatest detection range and that the walls of buildings can prevent detection of Bluetooth devices inside the buildings. In addition, using multiple Bluetooth readers per sensor array resulted in statistically significant increases in number of detections of single reader sensors, and horizontally separated sensor arrays were observed to be more effective than vertically separated sensor arrays. Finally, the thesis concludes with a summary of findings and a discussion of further research needs.

In today's society, there is a need for organizations to have a robust knowledge infrastructure in place, so that they can create or acquire knowledge; store knowledge; disseminate knowledge, and protect and manage their knowledge assets. However, with advances in the publishing media, our ability to generate information has far exceeded our abilities to find, review and understand it, thus leading to "Information Overload". Information overload refers to the inability to extract needed knowledge from existing information due to the volume of information, or lack of understanding of information and its whereabouts, or efficient ways to locate relevant information. These issues could be addressed by having efficient Knowledge Management Systems/Knowledge Services, so that people can create and understand available information, and have services to help them learn effectively and make better decisions. To tackle the new information needs, the use of technologies such as Weblog Services (weblog-enabled knowledge services) offer opportunities for decentralized knowledge creation and dissemination; as such tools put the authors in charge of knowledge creation process without any administration-enforced policies. Learning environments are also typically characterized by challenges such as barriers to use, quality control and relevance issues, or issues of credibility of information. These issues are effectively tackled by weblog services since weblogs are often open source and need no training for authoring. In addition, favorite blogs act as information filters or "bird dogs" and point at useful information. Feedback incorporated in weblog services makes people react and learn "interactively" and also enhances credibility and trust in information.
(cont.) Weblog services can also share published content through the process of Content Syndication, and thus offer an insight into knowledge assets in the timeliest of ways. This thesis report describes certain weblog services implementations carried out at MIT. Results of such implementations have emphasized the applications of such weblog (knowledge) services in knowledge sharing and online learning. However, there are certain issues to be addressed in weblog services such as privacy and intellectual property issues, as well as resolution of organizational tussles in the domain of content syndication standards.

Abstract:
Bipolar complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (BiCMOS) processescan be considered as the most general solution for RF products, as theycombine the mature manufacturing tools of CMOS with the speed and drivecapabilities of silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors(HBTs). HBTs in turn are major contenders for partially filling the terahertzgap, which describes the range in which the frequencies generated bytransistors and lasers do not overlap (approximately 0.3THz to 30 THz). Toevaluate the capabilities of such future devices, a reliable prediction methodologyis desirable. Using a heterogeneous set of simulation tools and approachesallows to achieve this goal successively and is beneficial for troubleshooting.Various scientific fields are combined, such as technology computer-aided design(TCAD), compact modeling and parameter extraction. To create a foundation for the simulation environment and to ensure reproducibility, the used material models of the hydrodynamic and drift-diffusionapproaches are introduced in the beginning of this thesis. The physical modelsare mainly based on literature data of Monte Carlo (MC) or deterministicsimulations of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). However, the TCADdeck must be calibrated on measurement data too for a reliable performanceprediction of HBTs. The corresponding calibration approach is based onmeasurements of an advanced SiGe HBT technology for which a technology specific parameter set of the HICUM/L2 compact model is extracted for thehigh-speed, medium-voltage and high-voltage transistor versions. With thehelp of the results, one-dimensional transistor characteristics are generatedthat serve as reference for the doping profile and model calibration. By performingelaborate comparisons between measurement-based reference dataand simulations, the thesis advances the state-of-the-art of TCAD-based predictionsand proofs the feasibility of the approach. Finally, the performance of a future technology in 28nm is predicted byapplying the heterogeneous methodology. On the basis of the TCAD results, bottlenecks of the technology are identified
Abstract:
Currently Germany is failing to reach its set emission targets. To achieve the envisioned carbon neutrality until 2050 fundamental changes will have to be implemented in all productive and non-productive sectors in the coming decades. Especially the transformation of the industry is of interest, as Germany’s economy relies heavily on the large industrial sector. This paper focusses on the transition of the two largest industrial sectors, the chemical and steel industry. The needed emission reduction in the industries will be mainly enabled by the implementation of innovative decarbonization technologies. Based on a thorough analysis of the developments of the technological and economic characteristics of the current production technologies and alternative decarbonized production technologies, this paper proposes detailed technology roadmaps for the decarbonization of the two industries until 2050. For developing the roadmaps two scenarios are defined: An economic potential scenario which aims at minimum cost of the transition and a technological potential scenario which aims at maximum emission reduction. In addition to the costs and emissions of the decarbonization technologies, the pathways of the industry transformation are defined by the reinvestment cycles of the existent production facilities and the market entry points of decarbonization technologies. The analysis of the modelled decarbonization pathways shows that the envisioned emission reduction target cannot be achieved based on the assessed decarbonization technologies, as either their remaining emissions are not low enough or their use is limited by external factors. The most promising technologies to achieve full decarbonization are based on hydrogen. The maximum achievable emission reduction is 84%, the economic potential scenario achieves only 75%. A sensitivity analysis of the emission reduction in the economic potential scenario against financial incentives shows a limited and sometimes even negative impact of external price reductions. The strongest positive effect is achieved by an increase of the price rise of CO2 price with a final price in 2050 in the range of 140 to 300 EUR/tCO2. Concerning the production cost the assessment reveals that, assuming a CO2 prices of 200 EUR/tCO2 in 2050, the production cost of most decarbonization technologies already drops below the cost of the current production technologies after 2030. This allows the general conclusion that the transition to a low carbon production will be profitable.

Abstract:
The proposed research aspires to provide new insight on issues of applied Roadmapping and advance the state of the art in Roadmapping and its practice. It provides a conceptual model and an integrated process framework for the development of a Third Generation, Meso-level, Co-innovation Dynamic Roadmapping (from now on called ‘Dynamic Roadmapping’), which integrates policy, research, industry, and organisational roadmapping methodologies, in order to manage the development and adoption of systemic innovations in complex domains. It has been developed to meet the needs of increasingly complex systemic innovations where multiple organisations are involved as co-innovators and many other intermediaries and decision makers need to be included in the innovation adoption process. These types of innovations are usually driven by the interplay of multi-dimensional and cross-impacting factors derived from changes in social, market, economic, political and technology systems. Thus, the ‘Dynamic Roadmapping’ does not presuppose a single desired future for complex domains, but several futures, based on the complementary strategic perspectives of inter-dependent stakeholders, which need to be contextualised and negotiated at various sectoral, national and regional levels in order to be adopted. The ‘Dynamic Roadmapping’ approach supports the achievement of the realisation of the desired futures through two main components: a ‘co-innovation group’ and an ‘observatory function’. The co-innovation group is formed from all the necessary co-innovators, adopters, decision makers and users that are needed in order for the innovations to be developed and adopted. Their function is predominately ‘normative’ describing “what they want to happen” and “how” it will happen. The observatory function provides foresight and sense making methodologies to the co-innovation group, in order to constantly review and adapt their roadmaps in light of the emerging changes that can impact the roadmaps’ realisation and adoption. A conceptual model and its theoretical grounding have been built in order to bridge support for roadmapping activities among different innovative communities (e.g. in policy, research, industry and practice) and foster their collaboration via stakeholders’ innovation networks. The proposed conceptual model and its process framework have been evaluated in a case study in order to establish its validity in the European context and provide implications to theory and practice. A pilot of this framework is first implemented for the area of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). The impact of this research is: - Managing uncertainty in Future planning - Managing and implementing emergent Roadmaps for systemic innovations - Monitoring and adapt the produced Roadmaps according to change factors in emerging reality - Ensure their adoption in complex domain This research work has been funded by an EU Marie-Curry Fellowship grant via the DYRECT project no. 255182. The proposed integrated framework has been adopted by the EU TEL-Map project (in education sector) and EU CRe-AM project (in creative industry sector). It has been documented in many European project deliverables as well as in international conference papers, and in journal papers.

Abstract:
Following the continuous increase of the mobile data traffic, the 5G technology has been introduced to offer additional capacity and higher data rate. WiFi APs integration with mobile networks are considered as potential candidate towards the heterogenous networks. We first propose in this thesis an algorithm for the estimation of the WiFi physical channels load through the observation of the non-overlapped channels and estimating as a result the load of the entire physical channels. Then, in our second proposed algorithm, we propose to dimension the WiFi network to offload LTE network and transfer the users that consume the high level of transmission power. The algorithm calculates the minimum needed number of APs that will support the extra offloaded LTE traffic. Finally, we evaluate the benefit of the cooperation by estimating the profit share of LTE and WiFi. We calculate for each player the profit using a coalition game concept based on Shapley value

Abstract:
Roadmapping was introduced by Motorola more than 26 years ago as an approach to support market, product and technology integrated planning. The main objective of the roadmapping is to create roadmaps, visual models of diagrams and tables that capture and synthetize market, product, technology and resources information in a plan compounded by goals for new developments. The roadmapping implementation enhances several challenges. One of the main, according to recent studies, its the difficulty in sustain the roadmapping process, in other words, maintain the roadmaps updated. This difficult can be attributed to the fact that the most of the applications are based on the use of external experts to collect e analyze information, which is prohibitive to some organizations due to the costs involved and to a gap in the literature, that doesnt present a model for guiding the practitioners in how to maintain the roadmaps updated. This paper presents a model for updating roadmaps that combines competitive intelligence and agile management theories. The model was developed through an action research in a civil construction segment organization. The collect data shows that the developed model contributed to this specific organization, by means of a positive impact on the degree of continuous information monitoring, the credibility on the roadmap and its use during the organizations innovation strategy formulation. One of the differentials of the model is the proposition of a framework that can be managed by the organization itself through the use of agile teams, without the need of new holes or functional areas to accomplish it.

Abstract:
This study has examined the possibility to measure road quality with smartphone apps, with help from their built-in accelerometers and GPS functions. With the help of IRI (International Roughness Index) and percentage absolute difference, the apps have been compared.  After a literature study, based on a question of issue, the apps Roadroid, Roadbump and Roadlab were selected for further evaluations.  The study has been carried out with several measurements, mainly on a 10 km long section of road 259, and then been evaluated and compared with the help of graphs. A final measurement of an approximately 90 km long drive with varying road data, have also been made to see if there was a difference between the different roads in the apps.  The results based on the measurements showed that it was possible to measure the road quality with help of the two apps Roadroid and Roadbump, however, some calibration is required, depending on a vary of parameters such as phone model, car model and phone holder, in order to achieve a result that corresponds to the actual values of the road.

In the context of global warming, academic institutes, international institutions such as the IPCC, and governments of numerous countries have proposed global objectives of reducing CO2 emissions and announced national targets. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the governmental targets in comparing with the global objectives of various allocation methods, which correspond to different carbon equity principles. In order to evaluate the technology roadmaps which are necessary to achieve these reductions of CO2 emissions, a flexible modeling framework is proposed for policy makers. Our sectoral model avoids the complex computing operations. It can be customized according to different requirements and situations. We simulate the model up to the horizon 2050, which is often seen as a turning point in energy use patterns worldwide – forced by the probable decline in hydrocarbons extraction. In the thesis, the technology roadmaps for the governmental targets on CO2 emissions are studied for three typical countries: China, France, and the United States. The model covers the sectors responsible for the greatest part of CO2 emissions: power, transport, residence and industry sector, in studying the impacts of the principle energy technologies, such as energy mix, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), electric vehicles and energy efficiency.Various methods and approaches are used in our modeling. IPAT identity - which assumes the environment Impact is the results of Population, Affluence and Technology - is employed in the power sector emission decomposition. Besides STIRPAT - for Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology - model is used for the projection of CO2 emissions in the Business-as-Usual scenario. Then SVR - for Support Vector Regression - is used to forecast electricity production. Finally, the Theil index is employed as the measurement of per capita CO2 emission inequality. Different from classic cost-effective energy system models, our model provides the technology pathways for different criteria, such as balanced development of energy technology across sectors, availability of energy resources, etc. Besides, the carbon equity is employed as one of the constraints in the multi-objective optimization, under the consideration of the convergence of technologies in sectors in the long-term.Our results show that the governmental targets in France and the United States prove very strict, as they require all sectors to make large efforts in reducing CO2 emissions. In contrast, the governmental target in China seems more easily achievable, as the necessary advances of technologies are less demanding. More precisely: if the energy mix is expected to be kept unchanged in China and in the United States of America, the CCS prove indispensable in the power sector. In France, 80% of automobiles are required to be changed into electric vehicles, in order to get the target of CO2 emissions. However, under the sectoral carbon equity consideration, coal combustion is projected to be reduced by two thirds in China, and it will have to be almost eliminated in the United States to achieve their CO2 reduction target. But gas is encouraged to be used in the power sector, especially in the United States. Regarding the transport sector, more than 60% of vehicles should be replaced to electric vehicles in China, and this share will be about up to 90% in France and the United States. Finally the sensitivity of parameters in the model is tested for a robust simulation, at each step of the work, and for all technology roadmaps. The results of the sensitivity tests show that electricity production and the emission intensity of production are the two parameters with the most important influence on CO2 emissions. Thus improving the efficiency of coal combustion and the energy efficiency of electricity will play an important role in the CO2 emission reductions

Abstract:
In recent years, numerous high tech companies have developed and used technology roadmaps when making their investment decisions. Jay Paap has proposed the Customer Focused Technology Planning (CFTP) framework to draw future technology roadmaps. However, the CFTP framework does not include risk assessment as a critical factor in decision making. The problem addressed in this quantitative study was that high tech companies are either losing money or getting a much smaller than expected return on investment when making technology investment decisions. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between returns on investment before and after adding risk assessment to the CFTP framework. Paap's CFTP framework and process to improve technology investments thus served as the theoretical framework for this study. Data were obtained from cloud computing companies using the companies' market risk data and actual returns on investment data. The results and findings of paired sample two-tailed t tests for means and equal variances showed that return on investment was positively related to adding a traditional risk assessment model to Paap's CFTP framework. These findings regarding the addition of risk assessment to the technology investment framework may be used by investors to (a) make better and more expeditious decisions, and (b) obtain a high return on technology investment by selecting the highest return value and lowest risk value.

With the superior electronic properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) such as high-efficient field emission, many applications are emerging in different industries. For example, using CNTs as a new light source in displays for televisions or computers may be a solution to the continuity of the flat panel display (FPD) industry in Taiwan. As a consequence of this approach, CNT back light unit (CNT-BLU) is now considered as a potential replacement to the contemporary CCFL-based BLU for LCD panels, especially when facing pressures from high material costs and environmental issues. In addition, the development of CNT-BLU can serve as the base for developing the next generation FPD, the CNT field Emission Display (CNT-FED). Although being full of potential, the CNT-BLU and CNT-FED technology is relatively new and the risk of the market exists. Whether CNT related technology can readily enter the stage of mass production and outperform the relatively mature LCD industry is still highly uncertain, therefore, it is critical to have a systematic approach to evaluate CNT-BLU/CNT-FED technology as well as market before any mass production decision can be made. This paper discussed the current progress of CNT-BLU/CNT-FED technology and tried to predict the development of this emerging technology using patent roadmap analysis and the concept of technology S curve based on a modified product roadmap.Using appropriate keyword sets, 746 CNT-FED related patents were found in USPTO database. These patents were categorized into four groups by major CNT-FED manufacturing process and analyzed. The curves of cumulative numbers of patent over years and across different countries were consistent with technology S curve and showed the stages of the technology life cycle of these countries and their competitiveness. It can be shown that the development of cathode is in the period of maturity, and processes related to anode, vacuum packaging, and CNT paste are in the period of growth. The curves also show that US is already in the mature stage while Taiwan, Japan and Korea are in the growth stage. According to the modified technology roadmap, it can be shown that Asia companies are most likely to take the initiatives for mass production of CNT-BLU/CNT-FED.

Technology and patent portfolio has become the basis of national policy and industrial strategy as the main stream. The application of technology blueprint modelling and patent analysis results in new technology and product, which enables greater competitiveness for the country, industry and company avoid patent litigation loss. The related forecast also forms the basis of science and technology policy and strategic technology planning to boost new business and achievements. Therefore, all levels of government and enterprises ought to consider seriously the future science and technology policy as well as industry development. The purpose of this study is to explore the development and strategy of intelligent robot through a technology blueprint modelling and patent trend analysis. The research process involves literature review of technology roadmap and then establishes research model. The research model consists of technology roadmap trend by patent map analysis. It is followed by the combination of patent map and technology roadmap to build an assessment framework. This research can contribute to the reference of new product and technology at country, industry and company level, which also benefits technology introduction and strategy setting. While applying to various scenarios using technology roadmap modelling, the timeline and externalities are taken into consideration of appropriate analytical methods and tools to outline the technology blueprint at different level, such as government, industry, company, and product. It is then validated by the staff/team in charge to produce a technical blueprint for implementation procedures and solve the integration gap. The research findings of technology patent analysis found that the maximum patents include ‘sense of touch technology’ and ‘coordinated motion control’, which meets robot evolution. The least patent is ‘hot recognition’. The possible reason is this technology has limited application and other substitute technology is not few. Hence, the suggestion is made to search for a high-performance alternative technology to improve quality of decrease the cost in the planning of medical care and tourism robot.

Industrial robots were introduced since 1970, and extensively used in industrial production such as vehicles, machinery, semiconductor and other industries. Due to the saturated market demand and applications, the major makers have to reconsider the application scope of traditional industrial robots, and establish the next stage of new application actively. In fact, Robot is the convergence of multidisciplinary technology. The robot visual servo technology is one of the vital areas. Patent analysis is not only a prerequisite for enterprises’ patent battle, but also highly related to technology strategy by providing useful information regarding competitors. Patent analysis can be a unique and helpful business strategy and common used competition analysis. The data source includes domestic and international databases, patent search database, technical retrieval database and expert opinions. The literature review incorporates patent analysis is thus concluded to provide more accurate trend analysis. Therefore, this study adopts patent life cycle to analyze US Patent Database from 1995 to 2010. The study findings show that most of the technologies are still in emerging stage. The technologies in growth stage are noise cancelling technology, monocular camera technology, depth camera technology, and most of the patents are held by the United States. The only mature technology is reverse motion mechanism technology, patented primarily by Japanese firms. There are fewer patents in the area of motion control technology, object recognition technology, object tracking technology developed in recent years to apply for patents, are currently under review stage, Our research suggests these technologies will file more patents faster than other technologies into the growth stage in next 5 years,. Therefore, Taiwanese R & D companies should pay attention to the development of these three kinds of patents to engage with technical licensing or technical cooperation with foreign companies to avoid patent infringement and paying a large licensing fee.

The semiconductor manufactories in Taiwan play an important role in international semiconductor industry, so it is very important to predict the Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing technologies. The dissertation will use technology roadmap to predict the developing trend of the Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing technologies. The research use the expert opinion method, relevant technology report, and secondary data, and then use the statistic analysis method to compile the Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing technology roadmap that compare with ITRS in 2001, finally to discuss critical system requirements and manufacturing technologies. As critical system requirements, most of the indexes get ahead obviously beside ASIC process index, that show manufacturing technology development faster and more complex than ITRS forecast. As DRAM capacity index, DRAM capacity requirement not grow as fast as expected, but DRAM manufacturer need to grasp the prevailing specifications from major customers. For manufacturing technologies, there are tree technologic dimensions, including front end process, interconnection process, and lithography process. In front end process, seven of nine technologic dimensions are faster than ITRS forecasted, but the manufacturers must strengthen SOC technology. In interconnection process, fourteen of twenty technologic dimensions are faster than ITRS forecasted, but manufacturer should resolve problems of the Low-κ materials. In lithography process, eight of nine technologic dimensions get behind ITRS forecasted, and manufacturers should pay attention to 157nm lithography technology, EUV technologies, cost control of the masks, and return of investment.

In recent years, the concept of big data is becoming more and more popular. Various industries now use analysis of big data. Data oriented to solve many practical problems. And then effectively improve the industrial efficiency and recognition that may be data mining to extract from the database of useful, special, previously unknown, potentially valuable information. The information is converted to data visualization, and become a reference for enterprises to improve decision-making. Big data analysis has also begun to be used to explore patents in the recent year. Patent analysis becomes one of the best tools for finding potential technical trends and applications. Through a patent analysis, the firm can explore the trend of technology development. Patent documents not only provide the science & technology information but also reflect the technological trend and development. Previous studies on the technology road map usually deal with the results of road mapping in specific techniques or case studies of firms’ experiences with the road mapping process. However, a few studies have discussed how the results of patent exploration and technology road mapping can be used to further predict future technologies. Therefore, empirical studies based on the patent analysis of the Virtual Reality (VR) search defined the technology roadmap. This study will introduce MADM methods based data-driven technology roadmap by using following procedures. First, this research defined the scope of the technology to be analyzed. Then, database will be confirmed. Mining technical keyword in the database and keyword will be grouped after the expert evaluates the keyword. The decision rules for each product being derived by Dominance-based rough set approach (DRSA). Last, the influence relationship between the keyword will be derived by using Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) and Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL). Based on the results being derived by the above processes, technology roadmaps for technology development can be definition. Along with the rapid development of information and technology, techniques for Virtual Reality (VR) are also gradually maturing. The Forth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) integrates all current technologies such as sensors, wireless networks, Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, artificial intelligence and information management systems to create a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) and smart factories. According to a 2016 PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) survey, through 2021 manufacturing enterprises globally expect that the successful implementation of Industry 4.0 initiatives will increase annual revenues by an average of 35% and reduce costs by an average of 43%. Moreover, global industrial product companies intend to make annual investments averaging US$907 billion through 2020. Industry 4.0 is still in its adolescence and each country varies in its industrial conditions and how it is proceeding to promote and implement concepts and practices. Industry 4.0 represents a revolution in engineering which integrates a wide range of industrial and technological fields. This study conducted two studies, including qualitative study and quantitative study to understand the smart manufacturing technologies development trend, technology roadmap and critical factors influence enterprise investment intention of smart manufacturing in Taiwan. First, a smart manufacturing key technology architecture is proposed which classifies the nineteen key technologies into four layers: sensor layer, an integration layer, an intelligent layer and a response layer. A technology roadmap is developed as a context for the analysis of correlations between technology applications and industry maturity. Technologies were defined through interviews with industry experts, and the correlation results are used to create a correlation matrix for the current status of smart manufacturing in Taiwan, including market maturity, technology maturity and correlation of key technologies. Suggestions for future smart manufacturing industry development in Taiwan were also collected. Second, drawing on Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), this study develops a model to identify impact factors for enterprise intention to invest in smart manufacturing. The model was tested using online survey data collected from 188 R&D and project development professionals from manufacturing and high-tech firms in Taiwan. The results showed that perceived demand market maturity significantly affects self-efficacy and outcome expectancy, and thus influences enterprise intention to make Industry 4.0 related investments, while the impacts of perceived supply market maturity and government subsidy policies were less significant. The results can serve as a useful reference for Industry 4.0 investment and policy making for government agencies, industry, and researchers, while providing insight for the future development of smart manufacturing.
