Within the Troodos ophiolite of Cyprus, samples were collected from extrusives and sediments exposed along the Arakapas fault belt and around the periphery of the Limassol Forest block. These areas represent crust which formed in the Upper Cretaceous within a 'leaky' oceanic transform fault, and also a small fragment of crust generated at an 'Anti-Troodos' spreading axis. The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) was investigated in three Chinese Loess Plateau sedimentary sections along a W–E transect. Previously published models assumed that winter monsoons were responsible for the magnetic fabric formation of loess sequences. In our new interpretation, the stronger summer monsoons from the southeast played the major role in magnetic fabric orientation in the studied west and central parts of the Chinese Loess Plateau. The AMS was generated during the rainy summer monsoon when the sedimentary particles including magnetite were rearranged, settled, and fi

<p>Geochemical records of continental weathering environments are limited despite their critical value to understanding how past climates functioned. This thesis seeks to address this limitation by drawing together innovative lines of research in geochronology, stable isotope geochemistry, and chemical weathering. Two distinct projects are described; each project designed to provide new insight into the paleoenvironmental and tectonic history of continental weathering environments. These projects, though distinct in their methods and samples, are unified by their goal: to use the stable, radio

Abstract:
Strain distribution across broad plate boundaries is inadequately understood. California's Mojave Desert has been adjacent to Tertiary convergent and transform plate margins and its general geology is fairly well known, making it an excellent location for crustal motion studies. Models for the Cenozoic history of the Mojave Desert predict crustal motions, but paleomagnetism is the primary method for quantifying such motions. The Barstow, California area has good exposure of appropriate rocks ranging from Oligocene-earliest Miocene to Pliocene in age. Standard paleomagnetic sampling and analysi
