Full textThis thesis examines the didactic approach CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), which is the methodology that best supports the development of multilingualism in all European countries. In particular, the thesis presents an analysis of CLIL teaching as a didactic proposal, focused on the learner, and outlines the profile of the teacher, who must be aware of the skills, difficulties and needs of their students in order to plan effective CLIL courses. In addition to an analysis of the theoretical framework of reference, of the teaching methodologies that support the active participation of the learner in the teaching intervention (group work is preferable, for example, to frontal lessons) and of the tools to support integrated learning , there will be a focus on the presence of CLIL didactic courses in the German language in Italian secondary schools. The thesis will then describe the objectives and methods of performance that characterized an empirical investigation carried out at some secondary schools in Lombardy where CLIL in German is part of the curriculum. The collected data are analyzed, commented on and measured against the theoretical framework of reference, and this makes it possible to highlight which are the most effective CLIL teaching methods in German, i.e. those which best involve the learner's profile and meet their needs. This work represents a resource for teachers who are preparing to plan CLIL didactic courses in German in Italian schools.

Full textThe dissertation investigates the problem of the German varieties, and in particular how a text is perceived by native speakers coming from its three main linguistic centres, namely Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where the institutions have felt the need to fix the different characteristics of their own variety in dictionaries, grammars and glossaries. The first Chapter is devoted to the development of the concept of textuality in linguistics. Chapter two considers some of the various approaches to text typology and culture in the different disciplines to introduce the question of pluricentricity in German. The hypothesis generally supported by the main scholars is that the varieties are signalled at the lexical, syntactic, pragmatic and grammar levels. The last chapter deals with the results of the interviews about the comprehension of some insurance texts and compare them to the dictionaries acknowledged in the code of the three varieties.

Full textThis research concerns the field of the audiovisual translation and the English movie language. In particular, the aim of the study will focus on the role of vocatives in a corpus of three films in three different languages. The chosen movies are produced in the '90s and are set in Victorian age: Jane Eyre, Swept from the Sea, The Piano. The empirical process will manly consider two categories of vocatives: proper names and address terms. The study approach will be based on the Corpus Linguistics methodology, in order to get a qualitative and a quantitative analysis of the vocatives. Indeed, there will be an investigation on the number and the type of occurrences involving the most frequent vocatives, both in the source language (English), and in the two target languages (Italian and German). Another important task of the research is the observation of translation universals (Baker, 1993), and the linguistic context in which the phenomenon occurs. The innovative feature of this work is a twofold analysis, which involves a three-way comparison. The results will show a higher frequency of vocatives in the dubbed languages and also different classifications of occurrences. Eventually, there will be some consideration regarding the translation strategies adopted for Italian and German, depending on their linguistic and cultural context.

Full textThe Essay, the «anti-genre» par excellence, describes a neglected research area within the Translation Studies. My thesis develops a holistic approach for the translation of the Essay. Preliminarily it joins literary-philological and linguistic acquisitions within the multidisciplinary theoretical-methodological horizon of an anthropological, literary, hermeneutic & text linguistic traductological paradigm. Through a critical examination of state of the art of both the literary-philosophical Essayforschung and text linguistic studies on the Textsorte essay, the work provides an operative: 1. Localisation of the genre and its main variants (from the specialist essay to the poetic essay) on the prototypical text continuum among the dimensions (scientific, pragmatic, aesthetic) of the Denkhandeln (Thought as Action); 2. Definitio per proprietates of the Essay. On the basis of these operative acquisitions the thesis devises a holistic model for the translation of the genre. The translating model is designed as a process with recursive, interacting phases featuring: holistic reception, hermeneutical and poetic analysis, rhetorical and stylistic analysis, cognitive and linguistic draft, wording and revision. The validity of this model is tested through a highly complex case study, i.e. the translation of the «poetischer Essay» of Durs Grünbein, arguably one of the world’s greatest living poets who enjoys large international recognition not least as a new classic of critical-poetic prose. Finally the unpublished Italian translation of Grünbein’s Essays Den Körper zerbrechen and Die Bars von Atlantis is presented.

Full textThis essay entitled “Come tradurre il metadiscorso letterario. Esempi di scrittura femminile nell’Ottocento austriaco/How to translate literary metadiscourse. Examples of nineteenth-century Austrian women’s writing” looks at the interlinguistic translation of non-fiction texts focusing on literary metadiscourse. More specifically, it does not analyse critical texts and/or methods, but rather functional writings of a strong pragmatic nature, which are also considered very important literary testimonies because they were written by women writers who made aesthetic expression their primary aim. The materials selected for the linguistic-textual analysis, spanning from the late eighteenth century to the mid nineteenth century, were written by women who worked in the theatre and used the pen as a tool for their intellectual and financial emancipation. The necessity of finding a way to publish their works induced them to use writing strategies connoted by special stylistic elements and rhetorical devices. These strategies aimed at favouring the acceptance and diffusion of the publishing offers of which these “paratexts” were the justifying moment. The “art of writing” is an experience that takes on many different contours, not devoid of relapses when selecting the translation strategies. In formal terms, the testimonies belong to an area of expressive mode similar to autobiographical testimonies. The historical period and the country of origin of the writers made it necessary to use an approach that could interconnect the diachronic plan with the diatopic dimension, whilst taking into account the diamesic components of a writing that was born in the theatre for the theatre and that must relate with the theatre and its regular visitors. The traductological model applied gets its fundamental lines from the reflections of textual linguistics and from the integrated/multi-disciplinary approach of “dynamic prototypology”.
Bazzanini, Lia <1961>. "Letteratura e realia. Le espressioni culturo-specifiche nelle traduzioni italiane della Wendeliteratur." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2010. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/2405/.
Full textLiterature and realia. GDR-culture-specific terms in the Italian translations of Wendeliteratur Realia are expressions referring to culture-specific phenomena, which can only be understood in the particular cultural context in which they are embedded; consequently they lack a corresponding expression in the target language. In the works of contemporary German literature focusing on life in the GDR, the so called Wendeliteratur, realia are used with a “quotational” function to denote and connote the particular situation of East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall and in the period until Germany reunification. Starting from the existing works concerning culture-specific terms, this thesis proposes a definition of realia. Through an integrated approach joining together the different theoretical issues of the translation studies with the practical issues of the translation task, it then develops a specific taxonomy for culture-specific terms in the GDR and investigates the main translation strategies and concrete procedures through an analysis of the solutions proposed in the translated works. The different choices in the Italian versions are finally submitted to an analysis based on the isotopies containing culture-specific expressions. Realia are repeated through the text assuring its coherence, they constitute an orientation for the interpreting task of the reader/translator, they guide him/her to recognize the different levels of the textual coherence and to choose the most appropriate solutions, taking into account the different textual dimensions and the complexity of the translation task. The results of the analysis are used as reference points for the translation into Italian of Friedrich Christian Delius’ novel Die Birnen von Ribbeck.

Full textResearch in multilingual business communication and knowledge management so far has mainly focused on large international companies or on SMEs facing globalisation, while this research centres on SMEs in historically multilingual regions. The aim is to to assess whether the long-term habit of communicating in more than one language on the local market gives these SMEs a competitive advantage. The dissertation bases on a mixed-method study performed in 2012-2013 in Italian-German bilingual South Tyrol (Alto Adige/Südtirol). The dataset consists of 443 valid responses to an online questionnaire and 23 qualitative interviews with local CEOs. Questions aimed at understanding how the South Tyrolean businesses cope with the challenges of multilingualism, focusing particularly on: multilingual communication, documentation, translation and terminology. The results sketch a general picture of multilingual habits in South Tyrol and pinpoint common weaknesses. Notwithstanding the availability of bilingual and multilingual staff, the ensuing potential is not fully exploited: companies tend to address same-language markets (i.e. Italian-speaking companies target the national market while German-speaking companies address neighbouring Austria and Germany). Internal communication is monolingual whenever possible. “DIY in-house translations” offer the illusion of coping with several languages, but quality is poor. Most texts are translated by internal staff with no specific competences. The cooperation with external translators also lacks the necessary insights to optimise the cost-benefit relationship. Based on these results, the dissertation proposes a set of simple and practical recommendations for South Tyrolean companies that build on optimising current workflows and better exploiting existing resources, thus helping to master the challenge of multilingual knowledge management and international communication. Most recommendations do not require financial investments and can easily be transferred to other multilingual (border) regions or to SMEs employing multilingual staff. Therefore, the recommendations can be helpful for a wide range of companies.

Full textRhetorical questions (RQs) are an integral part of the plenary sessions of the Bundestag and are here analysed in their prosodic realisations. The corpus comprises 40 RQs and 60 topic-setting questions (TSQs). The prosodic analysis has been carried out using the software PRAAT and focuses on nuclear accents, boundary tones and nuclear contours. After a preliminary perceptive analysis, the following acoustic analysis was aimed at measuring and observing the variations of F0 and intensity in relation to nuclear and pre-nuclear contours. The results show that RQs are almost exclusively produced with a falling contour and a widespread use of downstepped nuclear tones was also observed. Another key feature was the occurrence of two or more emphatic accents in prenuclear position which break the regular pattern of German intonation. Other prosodic patterns such as accents on the wh-word, F0 peaks on deictics and the use of contrastive realisations – or verum focus – were observed and their function associated to persuasion and maintaining attention. TSQs largely presented the same patterns, but differently from RQs, one-fourth of TSQs presented a rising or rising-progredient contour. This contour contributes to marking the question as a narrative device and as part of a broader prosodic context.

Full textAs lower secondary school students commit many errors in writing when English is the target language and Romanian is the native language, I have decided to conduct an error analysis in order to find out what the sources of their errors are, and to suggest improvements for teaching and learning. The present study is intended to provide a theoretical background for contrastive analysis, error analysis, models for error analysis and sources of errors by identifying, describing, categorising, and diagnosing Romanian students' errors in English written compositions. It will also examine related terms such as interlingual errors, negative L1 transfer/interference, interlanguage errors, intralingual errors, error gravity and error evaluation. The ultimate goal of this paper is to demonstrate to what extent negative L1 transfer/interference is the cause for errors in my students' English writing and to what extent these errors are caused by the target language. The findings have demonstrated that interlingual (negative transfer) errors and intralingual (developmental) errors are quite balanced; while interference from the mother tongue plays a role, it is not the only interfering factor. The hypothesis regarding the importance of establishing an error hierarchy based on error frequency has also been validated.

Full textThe research concentrates on the analysis and translation in Italian language of the Treatise on the techniques of memorization. The Treatise was written in Chinese language by Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit missionary at the end of the sixteenth century. At first we take into account the role of mnemonics in the Jesuit educational system; we than take into consideration the important terminological activity carried out by Ricci during his life in China. We observe the main contributes of Ricci to the invention of neologisms in Chinese language, in order to transmit Western knowledge to Chinese literati. We then analyse the Treatise on the basis of other linguists' previous studies and we identify key concepts to be analysed in order to describe the main terminological activity used in the Treatise.
ZANIN, RENATA. "La lingua dell'insegnante: Un modello per l'insegnamento e per l'apprendimento. Fondamenti metodologici dell'insegnamento CLIL." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/16648.
Full textTeaching a CLIL-class (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is a big challenge for teachers of non-linguistic disciplines (NLD), as they need to pay particular attention not only to the specialized language but also to the everyday language, in particular to chunks and formulaic sequences. The discourse structure necessary for a ‘good’ Clil lesson contrasts with the lingua franca, which is characterized by a reduced use of chunks and formulaic sequences (Aguado 2002, Wray 2002) and by a reduced attention for prosodic features. Teacher training on Content Language Integrated Learning needs therefore to raise and to foster language awareness of discipline teachers. The research presented in this work proposes a model for teaching and learning in CLIL-classes, which is based on chunks, formulaic sequences and their prosodic features. The scientific foundations of this model are the competition model (Bates 1999), the "idiomatisch geprägte Sprache" as well as the "Anschließbarkeit" (Feilke 1994, 1996) and the silent reading (Perrone-Bertolotti et al. 2013). The central point of the model for teaching and learning is the "prosodische Prägung", which can be successfully exercised and learned with poems from the great German literature giving new value to the role of the foreign language teacher in supporting the discipline teachers in CLIL-classes.

Full textMy dissertation aims at applying pragma-dialectical concepts to banks' annual reports. It is divided into three parts: in the first part the main theories of argumentation, from Aristotle to the most recent philosophers, are summed up. In particular, we intend to set the pragma-dialectical approach among argumentation theories and to explain the way how the School of Amsterdam has adopted previous concepts and has applied them to real argumentative communication. In the second part of our dissertation the main features of texts, and especially of argumentative texts, are highlighted. We also stress the fact that every text, even if written, has a dialogical nature. Moreover, we introduce banks' annual reports as means of interaction in economic and financial communication. In the third part of our dissertation we focus our attention on annual reports as means of persuasive discussion on the basis of the pragma-dialectical concepts regarding the critical discussion. In particular, the last chapter deals with the technique of strategic maneuvering, which tries to restore the balance between dialectic and rhetoric and stresses the necessity of their coexistence in the same text in order to argue successfully.

Full textIn the ongoing discourse about Italy's political image in Germany, the dissertation adds to the discussion the analysis of the modalities about how the present-day image of Italy's political system is handled in the German media during the so-called “Second Republic”. More than the illustration of Italy´s political institutions, parties and leader images in German media, the paper consults theories of gatekeeping, news bias, news values, and framing handles with the origins of the perception and in particular with the communication processes that reduce the accuracy in political foreign news. The analysis of journalist's daily work through 90 interviews / questionnaires and a content analysis of 1.024 newspaper articles shows that the media image of Italy's political system is not so much characterized as permanently negative as it is a never-ending personalization of Italy's political leaders. Finally, the dissertation shows the political orientation of newspapers in contrast to national news doesn't significantly influence foreign news. Moreover it was demonstrated the processes of perception and communication that take place in foreign news is determinant. Under these restrictions the correspondents are able to use the scope of development for writing articles and judging the events and the characters of Italy's political system.
LISI, LAURA ANA. "L'ospitalità linguistica. Studio comparativo delle traduzioni tedesca, inglese, danese ed italiana di El Llano en llamas di Juan Rulfo, secondo la traduttologia di Antoine Berman." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/127.
Full textThis work seeks to apply the theoretical principles and methods of the French-Canadian philosopher and translation theorist Antoine Berman to a comparative study of four translations (German, English, Danish and Italian) of Juan Rulfo's El Llano en llamas. The application of Berman's analytical grid aims at identifying the processes of linguistic and cultural transformation to which the translators cede when dealing with a work conceived and written in a foreign language. The analysis thus focuses on describing the negotiations needed to transfer Rulfo's style and his textual micro-universes to the four target languages. The main objective is to measure the efficacy of this methodology for a comparative analysis aimed at establishing how and to what extent Rulfo's texts have been transposed. In contrast to theoretical approaches where the readability of a translation and the consideration of the target reader's competences and expectations are the main focus, Berman offers a hermeneutical perspective based on the notion of 'linguistic hospitality': the aim of translation is not that of making the foreign comprehensible, of annexing it, but rather that of hosting it as something foreign in order to enrich the target horizon.
