Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to examine the publication and reception of first volumes of poetry at the end of the twentieth century by means of the polysystem theory. This theory maintains that literature should be considered as a system within other systems in society. In this case the systemic boundary is limited to Afrikaans poetry. The reception of six first volumes of poetry that appeared between 1999 and 2000 and were taken into account for the Ingrid Jonker Prize is investigated. A study is made of the reception of Afrikaans poetry within the polysystemic context and in the light of the fact that poetry is already a marginalised genre. This marginalisation is largely the result of economic pressures – mainstream publishers think twice before publishing a volume of poetry, especially a first volume. While poetry, particularly oral poetry, seems to be increasingly popular, there are few publishing opportunities for new poets. This situation is going to affect especially upcoming poets negatively. Chapter 1 gives an outline of the study. The state of affairs in the Afrikaans poetry system at the end of the twentieth century is described briefly. The aim of the research, the delimitation of the field of study, and the organisation of the chapters of the thesis are set out. Chapter 2 offers an explanation of polysystems theory, which has its foundations in Russian Formalism. The chapter also describes the structure of a polysystem and discusses the possible applications of the theory. Chapter 3 presents a theoretical overview of the process of canonisation in literature. Different definitions of the concept of the canon are given and the process and effects of canonisation are considered. Chapter 4 focuses on Afrikaans literature, including discussion of poetry as a marginalised genre, the future of Afrikaans poetry, the Ingrid Jonker Prize, and the role of the publisher. The issue of the absence of "new voices" in literature is also investigated, as well as the future of Afrikaans poetry. Chapter 5 examines the reception of six first volumes of poetry between 1999 and 2000. The reviewer as literary critic and the function of reviewing are considered first. Qualitative and quantitative studies are undertaken in order to determine which of the first volumes might be incorporated into the canon. Chapter 6 draws together the findings of the investigation in order to extend the discussion on Afrikaans poetry. Possible areas of research are suggested.

Abstract:
There is compelling evidence that helping adolescents develop certain traits (especially related to resiliency) can mitigate the confounding effects of suicide. Specific demographics of youth appear to have higher rates of suicidal behavior including those with mental health diagnoses and educational disabilities that affect students' academic achievement. We looked at evidence based social and emotional learning programs (SEL) that fostered adaptive coping skills and resilience. We identified Strong Teens (Carrizales-Engelmann, Merrell, Feuerborn, Gueldner, & Tran, 2016) as a program that could be easily administered and adapted into traditional and nontraditional school settings. This study was conducted in a residential treatment center (RTC) for adolescent males. The RTC permitted one of their therapists to implement the Strong Teens over the course of two consecutively run groups. Group 1 included seven boys and Group 2 included four boys. We relied on the therapist's self-assessment of modifications made to the program; the researcher's field notes collected during observations; emails between the therapist and researcher; the researcher's notes taken during conversations between the therapist and researcher; monthly Youth Outcome Questionnaire Self Report (Y-OQ-SR) test scores; youth Strong Teens pre and post test scores; and youth exit surveys conducted in one-one interviews at the conclusion of the Strong Teens lessons. Fidelity of program implementation was measured by the therapist and researcher completing the Strong Teens fidelity checklist (included in the Strong Teens manual). Based on collected data, we make the following recommendations: Adapt the Strong Teens program to increase student participation and receptiveness; carefully consider the size of the group, taking into account the capacity of the group leader to manage the group's behaviors and attend to individual needs; consider conducting groups sessions in settings that help youth feel safe and comfortable--groups held outside may be preferable to groups held inside classrooms; mental health professionals and teachers who lead the Strong Teens lessons may consider learning about a variety of basic therapeutic strategies and how these strategies might fit participants' needs; when evaluating the effectiveness of Strong Teens, carefully gather, consider, and contextualize a variety of data (quantitative and qualitative) from a variety of sources (youth participants, group leaders, and others who interact with the youth); in addition to focusing on teaching information and skills, group leaders must consider motivational strategies; focus initial conversations on why one would use such strategies to benefit oneself--later conversations may expand to include how strategies benefit others.

Abstract:
Every year in the United States, anywhere from 200,000 to 400,000 youths under the age of 19 will experience the death of a parent (or both) or a sibling. The Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon, was established in 1983 to assist grieving children. Support groups are based on principles of nondirective play therapy. During the years 1996-2000, The Dougy Center administered questionnaires to a number of its clients. The results of one of these questionnaires, The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D), showed that 48% of those receiving services were severely depressed at the time of entrance into the program with another 15% showing symptoms of mild-moderate depression. Depression is the most commonly studied outcome of grief and mourning among all age groups (children, adolescents, and adults). Two additional questionnaires measured basic symptomatology at the time of intake into the program. The Child Intake Form showed that those ages 3-12 generally had difficulty being around others since the death and wanted to spend more time alone. The Teen Intake Form showed that those ages 13-18 relied upon friends for support following the death; furthermore, normal patterns of eating, sleeping, and attending school have been disrupted since the death. The only questionnaire to be administered after clients had received services was the Family Self-Evaluation (FSE). Children and teens responded to this questionnaire, reporting that since attending groups at The Dougy Center they are feeling better. Many respondents reported that the most helpful aspect of the support groups came from knowing that others were experiencing similar emotions and transitions. Limitations in the reported findings came from too small of a sample size, convenience sampling procedures, administration of an age-inappropriate instrument, and a lack of pretesting and posttesting procedures.

Abstract:
The teen pregnancy rate in Henry County, Tennessee has increased over the years. The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence-based family life education policy for possible adoption by the board of education to address the persistent high teen pregnancy rate for girls aged 15-17 in the county. This present study resulted in a revised policy that was based on a comprehensive policy termed Abstinence-Centered Plus Contraception. An 18-member collaborative, organizational, and community project team, made up of community leaders, nurses, counselors, teachers, and students, assisted in the development and adoption of the policy, practice guidelines, and the development of implementation and evaluation plans for the newly adopted policy. The theoretical framework was based on the social, cognitive, and behavior change theories. The program logic model served as a framework to monitor its progress. Existing peer-reviewed literature, including research studies, state and national teen pregnancy prevention projects and curriculum, and publicly available statistics, were gathered and reviewed by the project team as background to be used for developing and changing policy at the institutional level. Project monitoring involved tracking processes surrounding policy and practice guideline development and adoption, as well as implementation and evaluation plan development for the adopted policy and whether these processes progressed as the empirically-derived teen pregnancy prevention projects should when changing sex education policy at the organizational level. This project resulted in policy adoption and developing a policy implementation and evaluation plan to be disseminated within a county school system that could decrease teen pregnancy rates and demonstrate positive outcomes.

Abstract:
The Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843 was arguably the most important event in Nineteenth Century Scottish religious history. The prime factor in the dispute which precipitated this crisis was the question as to whether the Church should rule itself through its own courts or be controlled by the secular government. This tension had existed in Scotland since shortly after the Reformation, but by the nineteenth century new factors had become involved. These included the political clash between democratic rights and the privilege of the ancien regime, the economic ability of Scots to maintain a church without state aid, the proper interpretation of Scots law, personal prejudice and bias especially on the part of Judges and politicians and, not least important, the transfer of civil government to the parliament in London with the consequent loss of contact with Scottish sensibilities. This study is concerned less with the detail of national events than with the reactions of local churchmen, both clerical and lay, to the events which occurred between 1830 and 1850. It focuses on three adjacent but dissimilar presbytery areas: the industrial area of Dundee where the leaders of public opinion were the entrepreneurial and professional members of the rising middle classes; the largely rural area of St. Andrews where public attitudes were formed by landowners and university professors; and the Cupar Presbytery area where agriculture and industry co-existed and where landowners and the middle classes shared responsibility for the general climate of opinion. This diversity of views is explored in the study as also are the reactions of various groups (e.g. , laity, clergy, students) to the judgements of the civil court concerning the Veto Act and to the campaigns for non-intrusion and spiritual Independence mounted by Church leaders. The contrasting responses of the three presbyteries to the allied issue of the Chapel Act are examined, while local preparations for the Disruption are explored in detail and set in the national context. The final sections of the study are devoted to a careful examination of the local aftermath of the Disruption: the manner in which the three Established presbyteries responded to their loss of ministers and elders and their attempts to recover their earlier social dominance; the ways in which the Free Church developed during the post Disruption years; the differences between the social and economic characteristics of those ministers and elders who adhered to the Established Church and those who joined the Free Church.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: We characterized B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases over ten years at a tertiary children's hospital to contribute to the body of knowledge on pediatric lymphoma in developing countries with a high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) burden. Methods: A retrospective cohort study using clinical and laboratory records of children newly diagnosed with B-cell NHL from January 2005 to December 2014. Results: Seventy-five children ≤ 15 years were included. The majority had Burkitt lymphoma (n = 61). Twenty-five percent (n = 19) were HIV positive and 16% (n = 12) had concurrent active tuberculosis. Bulky disease was present in 65.7% (n = 46) and 30.1% (n = 22) were classified as Lymphomes Malins B (LMB) risk group C. The five year survival estimates for HIV-negative and HIV-positive children were similar in our cohort: 81% vs. 79% for eventfree survival and 85% vs. 83.9% for overall survival. Of three children with Burkitt lymphoma, HIV and LMB group C, two died within one year. Conclusions: Irrespective of HIV status, the survival of children in our B-cell NHL cohort compares favorably with cure rates in developed nations, although advanced disease remains associated with a poor prognosis. Characterization of childhood NHL cases contributes to accurate risk stratification and tailored treatment.

"Theory-Driven Longitudinal Study Exploring Indoor Tanning Initiation in Teens Using a Person-Centered Approach." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2016. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/58.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Younger indoor tanning initiation leads to greater melanoma risk due to more frequent and persistent behavior. Despite this, there are no published studies exploring the predictors of indoor tanning initiation in teen populations. Purpose This longitudinal study uses latent profile analysis to examine indoor tanning initiation in indoor tanning risk subgroups from a national sample of female adolescents. Methods Latent profile analysis used indoor tanning beliefs and perceptions to identify indoor tanning initiation risk subgroups. The teens in each subgroup were reassessed on indoor tanning initiation after a year. Results Three subgroups were identified: a low risk, anti-tanning subgroup (18.6 %) characterized by low scores on positive indoor tanning belief scales and high scores on beliefs about indoor tanning dangers; a moderate risk aware social tanner subgroup (47.2 %) characterized by high scores on positive indoor tanning belief scales but also high scores on beliefs about indoor tanning dangers; and a high risk risky relaxation tanner subgroup (34.2 %) characterized by high scores on positive indoor tanning belief scales and low scores on beliefs about indoor tanning dangers. Teens in the aware social tanner and risky relaxation tanner subgroups were significantly more likely to initiate indoor tanning in the following year. Conclusions These findings highlight the need to identify teens at risk for indoor tanning initiation and develop tailored interventions that will move them to the lowest risk subgroup. Subgroup correlates suggest parent and peer-based interventions may be successful.

Abstract:
This research offers an overview of the Bituriges Cubi's ceramic during the two centuries before AD. It is based on the detailed analysis of new material originate from Chateaumeillant/Medio/anum and Bourges/Avaricum (Cher). These two urban sites have also been put into perspective in published sets of Levroux (lndre). A dual objective is pursued through the establishment of a regional typology and the functional and technical analysis of ceramics material. On one hand, it is about comprehending the chronological dynamic of the bituriges grouped settlements, since the emergence of the opened urban area to the creation of oppida and their evolution to the Biturige's city integration to the Roman Empire. On the other hand, it broaches the different socio-economic and cultural aspects perceptible through ceramological data. Thus, this multi-faceted approach sheds a new light on the Biturige society during this transitional period where central Gaul is subject on contacts and influence of the Mediterranean world

"The Role of Teen Centers Investing in the Success of Latinx Youth." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53936.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This study explores how a teen center within a local police department in California impacts the lives of local Latinx youth. Through a mixed methods approach of surveys, focus groups, and interviews, the study explores Mexican American youth, the most populous Latinx youth in the United States who are uniquely challenged by varying immigration statuses, mental health, and academic barriers. Theoretically, the study draws out intersections unique to the Latinx youth experiences growing up in America and engages in inter-disciplinary debates about inequities in health and education and policing practices. These intersections and debates are addressed through in-depth qualitative analysis of three participant groups: current youth participants of the teen center’s Youth Leadership Council (YLC), alumni of the YLC, and adult decision makers of the program. Pre- and post-surveys and focus groups are conducted with the youth participants over the span of a full year, while they take part in the teen center program, capturing how the teen center directly impacts their academic achievements, feelings of belonging, mental health, and attitudes towards law enforcement, over time. Interviews with alumni and key decision makers of the teen center further reveal broader patters in how the YLC program positively impacts the lives of Latinx youth and the challenges it faces when federal immigration enforcement complicates local policy relations with local communities.

The need for efficient managers is ever increasing. If any company wants to make use of its managers' full potential it is important that it should have an effective management development programme. Although many companies do have such programmes, their effectiveness is not always clear. Management development, as applied by the South African Transport Services is presented, followed by a survey of the literature on the evaluation of management development. On the basis of the foregoing. a questionnaire was designed to measure management's perception regarding management development within South African Transport Services. The questionnaire was administered to 444 managers within the organization and the findings suggested that more attention should be given to the selling of management development to all managerial levels and the refinement of current development techniques. Furthermore research should also be directed at the learning-, work behaviour- and output levels of evaluation. as well as at better methods of self-development.

Many countries were facing the social change of population aging. Taiwan was included, too. Government has improved and developed long-term care services to respond for increasing needs of care. Day-care service is one of services. Government made regulations of day-care, including service items, staffing, space, and facilities etc., however, there is no standards for pricing. As a result, the charging standards of day-care center were inconsistent. Therefore, the study focuses on the pricing of day-care center. There are three purposes of the research. First, analyze the charging standards and pricing models of day-care centers in Taiwan. Secondly, show finance and cost structure of day-care centers in Taiwan. Thirdly, find out the principle applies to pricing day-care centers in Taiwan. In this study, methods of data collection are in-depth interviews and secondary qualitative studies. We also combine quantitative and qualitative methods in order to enrich the content. To understand the imagination and views of day-care center price, researcher chose purposive sampling and had been invited ten executive officers and five local government authority staffs. Researcher used semi-structured interviews to focus on research framework to enrich flexibility and the content of the interview. The results of the study are as follows:First, the charging standards of day-care centers in Taiwan could be separated into three states. One is that whether the charging standards could distinguish different degrees of disability between models of single price and rating price; another is that different types of day-care center have different charging standards; according to the study, the single price in dementia day-care center is higher than others. The other is regional variation. We could find the price is getting lower from northern to southern in Taiwan. Secondly, as three states mentioned above, the effect of charging standards and degree of disability show the most significant deviation. Therefore, we analyzes the effects of models of single price and rating price for service providers, consumers, and governments. The results show that both of those two pricing models have strength and weakness for service providers and consumers. Thirdly, the causes of day-care center price could be divided into five categories:needs and willingness-to-pay, ability-to-pay, market price, cost, and policy. The study provides recommendations for the future day-care center development policy.

Abstract:
Teen films from the 1980s are a part of the zeitgeist, but there is very little we actually understand about how they can be qualified and defined, and about the phenomenon of their prolific production, box office success, and cultural relevance. Gaining greater insights about these issues is essential for recognizing the significance of a specific group of films and the ways they address concerns of how teens come of age, but is also important for learning about the films’ historical and industrial contexts of production. Asking the questions why these kinds of films, why at this time, and what do they mean, leads to an awareness and identification of the phenomenon, but additionally, these lines of inquiry explore how the films and their success are tied to changing Hollywood industrial conditions, and to the shifting political, economic, social, and cultural climate of the U.S. in the 1980s. While previous scholars have studied the industrial context of production of teen films in the 1950s, and some have looked at the different types of films produced in the 1980s, the matter remains as to whether teen films actually constitute their own genre. Examining this question of genre is necessary for clarifying a number of issues: how the films relate to the culture at large; how representations of youth on screen can help us understand and reevaluate Generation X, the demographic group coming of age at the time; and how an assessment of these films contributes to a re-conceptualization of the ways films are produced, marketed, and categorized in the New Hollywood. Using primary data consisting of textual analysis and contextual analysis, and applying both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study builds on and adds to previous approaches to genre. The contributions of this research are multifaceted. By gaining insights about these films, we can begin to appreciate more fully a maligned generation, the changing landscape of the entertainment industry, and a cultural phenomenon.

This research regards customer who once went to the bank to buy common fund of the area of Tainan as the parent, send out the questionnaire and retrieve 168 portions, reject 18 invalid questionnaires, effective questionnaire amounts to 150. This research is with relation interests (include confidence interests, social interests and special treatment interests), the relation quality (includes promising and satisfied with) In order to change one by oneself, and with the relation result (include customer's intermediate range and public praise) For in accordance with become item, in order to probe into relation and mutual influence degree during that time. This research sums up the real example result and gets the following conclusion now. First of all, among relation interests, different moon average customer of income has apparent differences on “social interests “. Then, different moon in “ promise ” construct surface for difference of showing average customer of income in relation quality. In each studying and constructing the interaction relation in addition, it has a relation analogous to the degree that exist between the surface that the result of study shows and concerns two interests, relation quality and relation result to construct. In relation interests and impact on relation result of relation quality analyze, concerning the “ confidence interests “ in the interests will have more apparent influence on “ the public praise “ of the relation result. However, the “ promise “ and “ satisfaction” in relation quality with regard to “ public praise” and “ loyal of the customer” in relation of result has influence of showing. In addition, in relation interests impact on relation quality, discovering “ confidence interests” and “ special treatment interests” to counter with “ public praise” and “ loyal of the customer” has influence of showing.

Kinematical indeterminate linkages are ones whose complete set of instant centers cannot be obtained graphically by the Kennedy’s theorem. This article aims to graphically obtained the solutions for some of such linkages, using a concept of introducing a imaginary link, while not altering the degree of freedom, called imaginary link method. It is also possible to combine this scheme with Pennock’s method to achieve greater applicability.

Abstract:
During the last 50 years, there has been a transfer of care for individuals living with mental disorders from predominately institutional settings to predominately community settings. The purpose of this research was to document the closure of Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) and to look at long-term outcomes for discharged individuals. These objectives were met by interviewing key people involved in the closure and through analysis of administrative data. To support individuals after BMHC closed, new services were developed in four priority areas: adult inpatient and crisis response services, adult rehabilitation and consumer support services, psychogeriatric services, and child and adolescent services. Visits to a general practitioner for a mental disorder by individuals discharged from BMHC decreased significantly over the follow-up period while visits to a psychiatrist increased significantly. Mortality rates, physician visits, and hospital admissions were higher in former BMHC residents than in a matched cohort.

Abstract:
This study examined the family literacy practices of ten adult participants who attend the Tembaletu Adult Basic Education (ABE) Centre in rural KwaZulu- Natal. The aim was to explore the influence of the ABE programme on these practices? The concept of family literacy in this rural context was interrogated. This is a qualitative case study, and the data collection techniques included individual interview, focus group interviews, observation, and document analysis. Findings revealed that women engaged in varied literacy practices in their homes. Story telling was more common than reading to children. The participants in the study for the first time are able to engage with their children in school related literacy activities. The extent to which the participants and their children supported each other in their literacy development was dependent on the levels of literacy. The Adult Basic Education programme had a direct impact on the literacy practices in the families of the participants. The benefits reported by the participants included personal empowerment, enhanced self-image, and the acquisition of literacy life skills that are crucial to the health and well being of their families. The study highlights tensions between the content of adult programmes and family literacy practices valued by the participants. Other key issues that emerged in the study are: the link between family literacy and culture; gender and family literacy; family literacy in the context of HIV/Aids. The findings in this study valuable perspectives on emerging family literacy in a rural context - an area of study that is in its infancy in South Africa.

Abstract:
Trabalho de Projeto do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina apresentado à Faculdade de Medicina
AbstractBackground: The “Ten Commandments for Patient-Centred Treatment” explores and advocates a different approach to the pathology based therapy. Objective: To ascertain the agreement with the “Ten Commandments for Patient-Centred Treatment” by physicians enlisted in the Central Regional Section of the Portuguese Medical Council, exploring differences by age group, gender and medical speciality.Methodology: Observational study in a convenience sample that answered an on-line questionnaire, carried out in September 2016 with emails sent back every Friday to remnant non-responders. The English wording was translated to Portuguese, a questionnaire with a four grade answer was created and its feasibility determined. Variables as gender, age group (≤35 years, ≥ 36 and ≤ 55 years and ≥ 56 years) and medical specialty (General Practice/Family Medicine, Medical and Medico-surgical) were considered. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. Results: 811 doctors participated (calculated sample size of n=366), ≤35 years n=203, ≥ 36 and ≤ 55 years n=217 and ≥ 56 years n= 373, women n=391 (49,2%), from General Practice/Family Medicine n=301, from a Medical specialty n=303 and from a Medico-surgical specialty n=173. By medical specialty and for commandment 1 there is higher prevalence of the “Disagree/ Completely Disagree” in the General Practice/Family Medicine specialty (p<0,001). By gender and for commandment 1 women vs men doctors “Disagree/ Completely Disagree” proportion of 11,7% vs 6,4% (p=0,003). For the younger age group (≤35) for Commandment 1 there is a lower proportion of “Disagree/ Completely Disagree” (p=0,016), whereas for Commandment 4 (p=0,007), for Commandment 6 (p=0,001), for Commandment 7 (p=0,001) and for Commandment 8 (p=0,020) there is a higher proportion of “Disagree/ Completely Disagree” in those aged more or equal to 56.Conclusions: There is vast agreement with the “Ten Commandments for Patient-Centred Treatment” by physicians enlisted in the Portuguese Medical Council, Central Regional Section. For Commandments 1, 3 and 6 the proportion of “Disagree/ Completely Disagree” is higher than for the remaining. There’s a need for future investigations to elicit the present results.

Abstract:
A ten year analysis was conducted on the ten county Nashville metro area to determine which atmospheric thermodynamic parameters are important for thunderstorm development in North-Central Tennessee. Spatiotemporal patterns of thunderstorm activity around the city were also studied. Two case studies depicting initiation (July 10, 2009) and bifurcation (June 13, 2010) of thunderstorms were additionally discussed. The purpose of the analysis was to determine whether heat from the urban heat island (UHI) or moisture from the Gulf of Mexico was a larger factor in thunderstorm formation. A similar methodology completed by Dixon and Mote (2003) for Atlanta, Georgia was used for Nashville, Tennessee. Two land based weather stations collecting dry-bulb temperatures, twice daily radiosonde measurements, and local NEXRAD weather radar were used to determine where, when, and how thunderstorms developed around Nashville. One-sample t-test hypothesis testing of 24-hour land-surface temperature differences ahead of each event along with average daily radiosondes dry-bulb and dewpoint temperatures at five standard pressure levels were examined to determine if statistically significant mean differences (α = 0.05) were found between average study days. Atmospheric stability indices and other moisture parameters such as precipitable water (PWAT), mixing ratio, theta-e, and lapse rates were examined for average differences between average study days. Ultimately, 22 events were found (18 initiations and 4 bifurcating) over the 10-year period with the non-drought years 2005 and 2010 exhibiting the most events. The warm season month of August showed the largest distribution of events with 8 events during diurnal hours (between 2 p.m.-4 p.m. CDT). The analysis also found 12 storm centers (32%) formed within 1km of interstate highways with 77% (23) of initiation locations falling within 3 km of limited access highways. Statistical results showed that moisture, rather than heat from the UHI, were a larger component to thunderstorm formation over the city of Nashville.

Williams, Allan James. "Getting to know them : characters labelled as mentally disabled in ten Canadian short stories and novels." Thesis, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1541.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the treatment of mental disability in Canadian literature. Literature reflects the perceptions and practises of the culture of which it is a part. Radical changes have been made in recent years in the thinking about persons with mental handicaps. The issue of whether the changes are reflected in literature prompted the writing of this thesis. Little is known about characters labelled as mentally disabled in non-didactic, Canadian Literature. They are not commonly discussed in the academic journals of Canadian Literature and Education. The purpose of this thesis was to get to know ten of the above characters. The following questions were drawn from issues in the academic literature regarding mental disability. All seven questions were applied to each character in turn. (1) Label? (2) Personal relationships? (3) Thoughts and feelings? (4) Choices? (5) Daily activity? (6) Relationship with service providers? (7) Personal assets and abilities? Short story characters: Benny Parry, "The Time of Death," Munro, 1968; Dolores Boyle, "Dance of the Happy Shades," Munro, 1968; Kelvin, "Circle of Prayer," Munro, 1986; Neddy Baker, "Hello Cheeverland, Goodbye," Findley, 1984; Stella Bragg, "Bragg and Minna," Findley, 1988. Characters from novels: Francis Cornish, "What's Bred in the Bone," Davies, 1985; John-Gustav Skandl, "What the Crow Said," Kroetsch, 1978; Lotte, "Not Wanted on the Voyage," Findley, 1984; Rowena Ross, "The Wars," Findley, 1977; Tehmul Lungraa, "Such a Long Journey," Mistry, 1991. Findings indicated that Canadian literature is not yet reflecting the new movement to develop full personhood. Most characters were limited in the choices they made. A variety of labels were used. Little was said about what the characters think or feel. No characters were married, had children, or a job. Most of the characters had a personal relationship with another character.

Abstract:
After Jagiellonian dynasty ascended to the throne of Bohemia and especially at the time of permanent absence of the King in the land, the political ambitions of the estates of Bohemia, particularly the lords and knights, intensified. The estates strived, among other things, for codification of the land constitution which they succeeded in the beginning of the 16th century when the King issued the so-called Land Constitution of Vladislaus II. (Vladislavské zřízení zemské). At the same time, the estates also made an inventory of archives of the Crown deposited at Karlštejn castle, which is known as the Matouš of Chlumčany's Registry of Ten Coffers (Registrum desíti truhlic). These documents prove the power of bohemian nobility, who attempted to consolidate their position in judicial and administrational system of the country. At the same time they represented themselves as co-responsible political unit, alongside the King, which works for the good of the Kingdom and the whole Lands of the Bohemian Crown. My diploma thesis pursues the gradual growth of power of the bohemian nobility, who wanted to consolidate their position not only at the expense of royal cities, but also of the power of the King himself. The accent is mainly given to the most influential persons or aristocratic groups who...
