Abstract:
Tee-Resonant Dual Active Bridges are isolated, bidirectional, DC-DC converters that behave as voltage-controlled current sources, which makes them especially useful for battery charging applications. In this work, three new phase-shift modulation strategies are proposed that can improve the converter efficiency at high switching frequencies and enable loss-shifting between the primary and secondary sides. To model the converter, a large signal state-space model is derived and it is demonstrated to be useful for controller design. Lastly, a converter topology is proposed that enables direct integration of the converter with the grid, including power factor correction capability.

Abstract:
The use of computers by naval architects has revolutionised ship design and -construction management. The use of high power laser technology could similarly revolutionise production processes to produce a quantum leap in productivity. Facilitating low heat input materials processing, the laser is suited to various cutting, welding and heat treatment applications in shipbuilding to increase productivity through improved product accuracy. From these processes, the Author has concentrated on the application of high power lasers to the welding of tee section joints - the most common joint configuration in ship structures - by a single sided method (skid welding) to give both the lowest possible heat input and greatest flexibility. -Using a lOkW laser, single pass fully penetrating skid welds may be produced for joints in plate of up to 15mm thick, but using this size of laser, production parameter envelopes to produce visually and structurally sound joints reduce in size as plate thickness increases to greater than 10mm. It is shown that fully penetrating laser skid welds produced in steel conventionally used for surface vessel construction are of superior structural quality to fillet welds as required by classification society rules. The work has shown that achieving process consistency in an automated production based skid welding workstation operating with existing levels of joint tolerance will be dependent not only on well designed laser and beam delivery harware but also on suitable on-line adaptive control systems. It has been demonstrated that by employing laser skid welding for steelwork fabrication, an increase in productivity can be gained, principally through increased processing speed and improved product accuracy.

Abstract:
In modern computing environments, hardware resources are commonly shared, and parallel computation is more widely used. Users run their services in parallel on the same hardware and process information with different confidentiality levels every day. Running parallel tasks can cause privacy and security problems if proper isolation is not enforced. Computers need to rely on a trusted root to protect the data from malicious entities. Intel proposed the Software Guard eXtension (SGX) to create a trusted execution environment (TEE) within the processor. SGX allows developers to benefit from the hardware level isolation. SGX relies only on the hardware, and claims runtime protection even if the OS and other software components are malicious. However, SGX disregards any kind of side-channel attacks. Researchers have demonstrated that microarchitectural sidechannels are very effective in thwarting the hardware provided isolation. In scenarios that involve SGX as part of their defense mechanism, system adversaries become important threats, and they are capable of initiating these attacks. This work introduces a new and more powerful cache side-channel attack that provides system adversaries a high resolution channel. The developed attack is able to virtually track all memory accesses of SGX execution with temporal precision. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate our attack to recover cryptographic AES keys from the commonly used implementations including those that were believed to be resistant in previous attack scenarios. Our results show that SGX cannot protect critical data sensitive computations, and efficient AES key recovery is possible in a practical environment. In contrast to previous attacks which require hundreds of measurements, this is the first cache side-channel attack on a real system that can recover AES keys with a minimal number of measurements. We can successfully recover the AES key from T-Table based implementations in a known plaintext and ciphertext scenario with an average of 15 and 7 samples respectively.

Abstract:
As wind power expands rapidly worldwide, it is becoming more common to build wind farms in alpine locations where the wind resources often are good and conflicting interests are few. This is evident in Sweden where a substantial portion of the large wind parks planned are to be built in cold climate locations. The fact that icing of turbine blades and sensors can severely impact the production raises the question how large the losses are. In this thesis 10 wind parks comprising 45 turbines, well dispersed throughout Sweden are investigated. Daily production figures are compared to wind data from the MERRA reanalysis data-set in order to see if it is possible to determine the level of losses during the winter period caused by cold climate. A method is suggested where a relationship between daily production and daily average wind speed is established using representative summer days. This relationship is then used to calculate an expected production for the winter period. Losses are concluded as the difference between expected and actual production. The method did not produce a consistent and reliable result for the sites investigated. However, the method captures the overall trend with higher losses in the north of Sweden compared to the sites in the south where little or no icing is likely. At the sites where icing is expected, losses in the range of 10 to 20% of the annual production were calculated.

Skolutveckling och ledarskap, Specialpedagogisk magisterutbildning, Malmö högskola.Följande kvalitativa studie, med abduktiv ansats och reflexiv metod som vetenskapsfilosofisk grund, är resultatet av intervjuer med tio ungdomar som har fått diagnos dyslexi först under sin gymnasietid. Syftet var att utröna om diagnostiseringsprocessen och dyslexidiagnosen i sig hade haft någon betydelse för informanternas självbild, studiesituation och studieresultat. Intervjuerna reflekterade också betydelsen av omgivningens förhållningssätt till informanternas svårigheter, såväl före som efter diagnos. Den enskilda skolans och lärarens utövande av makt, bl.a. genom hur styrdokumentens riktlinjer för elever med särskilda behov tolkas, är av största vikt för den enskilda elevens möjligheter till kunskaps- och färdighetsutveckling. Vid jämförelser mellan intervjuerna och tidigare forskning synliggjordes betydelsen av såväl samhällsövergripande som individ- och klassrumscentrerade normativa mönster och brist på kunskap kring dyslexi, med risker för därpå följande stigmatiseringsprocesser. Studiens resultat visar att diagnostiseringen har haft en positiv inverkan på informanternas självbild, studiesituation och studieresultat. Studien visar också att informanterna är rädda för omgivningens okunskap och fördomar. Resultaten motsäger att diagnostisering i sig är stigmatiserande, men ger belägg för att omgivningens attityder till och värderingar av läs- och skrivsvårigheter kan vara det. The fundamental aim of the study was to examine if the process of diagnosing, and the diagnosis of dyslexia in itself, have affected the informants’ regard of self, study situation and study results. The interviews reflected the significance of attitudes among adults and peers, concerning the informants’ reading and writing difficulties, both before and after the diagnosis. To enable the students’ development of cognition and proficiency, it is of great importance how schools and teachers wield their power when interpreting the principles in the steering documents regarding special education needs. When comparing the interviews with results of earlier research, the lack of knowledge about dyslexia, the importance of normative patterns, attitudes and values in society, the classroom and the individual, with the following risks of stigmatization processes, became evident.The results of the study indicate that the process of diagnosing and the diagnosis itself have had positive consequences for the informants’ concept of self, study situation and study results. The study results also show that the informants fear the ignorance and prejudice of adults and peers. The results suggest that a diagnosis of dyslexia in itself is not stigmatizing to the individual, but confirm that the attitudes and values of others can be so. This Master's thesis deals with the influence of breathe to baroreceptor reflex. The first chapter is focused on measuring of blood pressure, in reference to later used method. In the second part is detailed analysis and explanation of term baroreflex, relationship between frequency spectra of systolic blood pressure, heart rate and breathing, mechanisms of regulation of blood pressure and heart rate variability. Third chapter deals with possible ways, how to analyze data, which are needed for estimation of baroreflex sensitivity, analyze of heart rate variability and estimation of power spectral density. Next parts of this thesis is paid attention to technical equipment and methods of acqusition of data, using this equipmnent. Part of this work is also software application, which makes possible from the recorded data estimate baroreflex sensitivity.

Abstract:
This study reports on a research project that examines teenage young women's themes of power. The themes emerged within a community education program that was conducted in a small, low-income, semi-rural town in Western Massachusetts. The teenagers engaged in theater games and improvisations that were eventually performed live on public-access television. The research also looks at power relations imbedded within the project itself. The program was designed to create an educational experience that provided teenagers with a public voice about their own concerns and issues, and to do so in a way that addressed feminist and postmodern critiques of "liberatory" pedagogy. The study seeks to understand what teenage young women express about self-efficacy and power in relation to themselves, their schools, families, and communities; and an analysis of how the project encouraged or discouraged this expression, particularly in regard to my attempts at utilizing a postmodern feminist perspective in its design. It is framed within a feminist approach to research and incorporates several methodologies to explore these questions. Three definitions of power are indicated by the teen women: Power as control over oneself, others, and events; power as speaking for oneself, being heard, and being understood; and power as intuitive, creative and spiritual experience. The study provides an examination of these themes and a deconstructive analysis of the pedagogy. A primary finding of the study suggests that a special time and place is needed by teen women as a means of finding empowered voices. This "ritual space", is a safe place for honest expression, outside of the space and time norms of an adult secular world.

Geweld en skoolgeweld veroorsaak ernstige maatskaplike ontwrigting in Suid-Afrika. Die metodes waarmee skoolgeweld tans hanteer word, is oneffektief en meestal op mag en dissipline gegrond. Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om alternatiewe benaderings vir die hantering van skoolgeweld te ondersoek en om ʼn implementeringsraamwerk vir ʼn heelskoolbenadering teen skoolgeweld te ontwikkel. Ten einde hierdie doel te bereik, fokus die navorsing, wat binne ʼn aangepaste ekologiese model (AEM) onderneem is, op ʼn konseptuele analise van die aard en inhoud van die konsepte “geweld” en “skoolgeweld”, omdat beide dikwels met konsepte soos “mag” en “dissipline” verwar word. Beide begrippe is multidimensioneel en kom binne al die sfere van die AEM voor. Dit sluit geweld weens verskeie oorsake, soos psigo-biologiese faktore, strukturele geweld en reaksiegeweld in. Skoolgeweld kom eweneens weens verskeie oorsake en in verskillende vorms binne die sfere van die AEM voor. Voorbeelde sluit lyfstraf, boeliegedrag, bendes en strukturele skoolgeweld soos rassisme, die kwaliteit van onderwys en oorvol klasse, in. Die navorsing toon aan dat die wyse waarop skoolgeweld tans in Suid-Afrika hanteer word, onsuksesvol is. Dit word hoofsaaklik by wyse van mag, dissipline en ʼn strafbenadering hanteer, wat meebring dat die verhoudings wat weens die geweld beskadig word of skipbreuk ly, versoening tussen dader en slagoffer verhoed en dat die slagoffer se behoeftes nie in ag geneem word nie. Die wyse waarop skoolgeweld hanteer word, bied ook nie ʼn wyse waarop strukturele skoolgeweld bestuur kan word nie. Een van die alternatiewe wyses waarop skoolgeweld hanteer kan word, is herstellende onderwys. Dit is ʼn betreklik nuwe benadering tot onderwys, wat op herstellende geregtigheid gegrond is, maar ook proaktiewe aktiwiteite insluit. Omdat herstellende onderwys op beginsels soos verhoudings, dialoogvoering, waardegedrewenheid, herstel en versoening gegrond is, kan dit gebruik word om skoolgeweld te beheer. Herstellende onderwys maak van verskillende proaktiewe en reaktiewe metodes gebruik, soos slagoffer-oortrederbemiddeling en groepsgesprekke. Dit fokus op ʼn skoolgemeenskap wat waardegedrewe is, eerder as op oortredings. Herstellende onderwys word egter deur ʼn aantal knelpunte gekniehalter. Die navorsing toon aan dat hierdie knelpunte deur die Freire se benadering tot onderwys ondervang kan word. Freire se benadering tot onderrig word aan die hand van ʼn aantal kernelemente, wat in vyf groepe verdeel is (naamlik sy siening oor mag en bemagtiging, etiesgodsdienstige elemente, bewustheid en aksie, dialoogvoering, onderwyspraktyk en onderwys en die samelewing) hanteer. Die navorsing toon aan dat hierdie elemente gebruik kan word om die leemtes in herstellende onderwys te vul en dat die twee benaderings en ʼn aantal ander benaderings wat daarby aansluit, soos onderwys vir maatskaplike geregtigheid, kritiese pedagogiek en die leerstellings van Mohlomi, tot ʼn geïntegreerde onderwysbenadering – geïntegreerde helende onderwys – saamgevoeg kan word. In die voorlaaste gedeelte van die navorsing word die beginsels van geïntegreerde helende onderwys gebruik om ʼn praktykgerigte implementeringsraamwerk te ontwikkel. Die raamwerk word in twee dele hanteer: eerstens die implementeringsterreine, naamlik die geleerde en geleefde leerplanne, en tweedens die implementeringsproses wat deur middel van deelnemende aksienavorsing uitvoer kan word. Die navorsing sluit af met ʼn opsomming van die navorsing, ʼn uitwysing van die beperkings van die studie en aanbevelings vir verdere ondersoek.
Violence and school violence play havoc with South African society. Current methods to curb school violence depend on power, discipline and a penal approach, and prove to be ineffective. The purpose of this research was to investigate alternative approaches to manage school violence and develop an implementation framework for a whole-school approach to it. This research was conducted according to an integrated ecological model. The concepts “violence” and “school violence” were analysed as they are often confused with the concepts “power” and “discipline”. The former pair of concepts are multidimensional and present in all spheres of the integrated ecological model. They include individual violence, group violence and structural violence. School violence manifests in different forms, including bullies and gangs. This research differentiates between controllable school violence – which is within the school community’s sphere of influence – and manageable school violence – which originates outside the school community. The research indicates that the ways in which school violence is currently addressed do not consider damaged relationships because of violence, reconciliation between the perpetrator and the victim, and the needs of the victim. In addition, they do not contribute to the management of structural school violence. Restorative education is a recent approach based on restorative justice and includes proactive activities. Because it is value-driven and grounded on relationships, dialogue, restoration and reconciliation, it can be of great use in the fight against school violence. Restorative education includes both proactive and reactive methods such as victim-offender mediation and group discussions. It focuses on a value-driven school community rather than infringements. However, restorative education has certain deficiencies. This research indicates that they can be made good thanks to Freire’s approach to education. Freire’s approach to education comprise a number of key elements, which can be divided into five groups, viz his views on power and empowerment; ethical-religious elements; consciousness and action; dialogue; educational practice; and education and the community. The research indicates that these elements can compensate for the deficiencies in restorative education. Freire’s approach and a number of connected approaches such as education for social justice, critical pedagogy and the doctrines of Mohlomi, can be combined in an integrated approach to education, referred to as integrated healing education. In the penultimate part of the research, the principles of integrated healing education are utilised to develop a practice-orientated implementation framework. The framework is discussed in two sections: the fields of implementation, viz the learned and lived curricula, and the implementation process through action research. The research concludes with a summary, limitations of the study, and recommendations.

White LED has become the mainstream of lighting today. It has become possible to replace RF communication with visible light. Visible Light Communication (VLC) combines the functions of lighting and wireless communication. It has high transmission rate similar to traditional RF communication, and it has many advantages such as proper confidentiality, high transmission speed, and no electromagnetic interference. However, due to the limitation of the natural frequency response characteristic of white LEDs, the transmission speed is affected. The current focus of VLC research is on improving speed. Constrained by the traditional VLC system circuit design, the LED driving power on the VLC is low, resulting in a very short effective communication distance and insufficient for direct lighting. High-speed VLC systems currently use the Bias Tee to transmit signals and drive LED lighting, while high-current Bias Tee with wideband is hard to obtain and expensive (over US$500). As a result, the current VLC research has difficulties in both distance and transmission rate. This thesis is aimed at improving the driving power and speed of VLC and proposes a high-power Bias Tee with a working bandwidth of 30kHz~3GHz. This thesis also built a verification VLC transmit and receive system. Use Cascaded T-bridge, pre-emphasis circuit and first-order RC post-equalizer circuit to improve the transmission speed, so that our VLC system bandwidth can reach 300MHz. The cost of Bias Tee proposed by this thesis is about 20 times lower than that of the commercial Bias Tee, and the distance is 50% longer than the traditional researches using white LEDs and bring brightness closer to the lighting of everyday life. The use of this Bias Tee as a VLC application in daily life will have the advantages of low complexity and low cost to make VLC more practicability.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to destabilize notions that representations of ‘Indians’ as they appear in contemporary Switzerland, Germany, and France are benign. Rather, Europeans in this region rely on ‘playing Indian’ and consuming Indianness to understand themselves as white modern subjects. I demonstrate how this operates through two case studies and argue that colonialism persists through symbolic dialectical processes between North America and Western Europe. Colonial discourse, and regimes of representation, concerning Indianness circulate across geographical locations. I link these symbolic representations to ongoing material struggles of Indigenous peoples for self-determination and land rights. Switzerland’s foreign investments and free trade with Canada for natural resources on unceded Indigenous territories implicates them in a neoliberal colonial paradigm that continues to dispossess peoples of their land. I turn to Indigenous artists and international solidarity networking as potential strategies that address both symbolic and material processes of colonization.

We are living in a century of industialization, with noise as the more general of the polutents. Because Eskom workers are subjected to this risk factor, it was decided to institute and implement a hearing conservation programme. Literature concerning noise and hearing conservation was researched with the view to suggestions as a basis for a successful hearing conservation programme. A programme was compiled and included in research of the relevance concerning the knowledge and attitude towards the active use of hearing protection. For the purpose of this research a true experimental design, with a pre-test and post test in the form of a standardised questionnaire, wa~ used. The hearing conservation programme was implemented and controlled by an occupational health nurse in conjunction with other competents on the subject. On completion of the presentation and analysis of the questionnaires, certain findings were noted and used as guidelines to specific recommendations.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred on 11 March 2011 in the north-western Pacific Ocean, Not only the strong seismic waves but also tsunami caused destructive damage to the coastal city in eastern Japan,. The nuclear power safety became a big issues because of nuclear leakage incident. People started to attend street campaign to appeal for compulsory retirement of Nuclear Power Generators. At the same time , using more strict standard to examine the construction of the Long-Men (4th nuclear power plants). After negotiation meeting, Republic of China government announced 1st , 2nd and 3rd nuclear plant will be retired when arriving compulsory retirement date. And 4th nuclear power plant should be suspended the construction until safety measurement is finished. According to the policies, Taipower company proposed the power planning without nuclear power to supply increasing electric power load. This thesis proposed the application of Fuzzy Controller Hybrid Time-Varying Acceleration Coefficients Particle Swarm Optimization (FCHTVAC-PSO) to solve the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problem over the entire 24-hour period with minimum cost each hour period for Taiwan power system. The DED problem must satisfy the constraints of the load demand, generating limits, and also the limit of power flow, buses voltage and transmission line capacity. This thesis proposed a research focused on the minimum cost DED result with compulsory retirement of every nuclear power generators and variation of percent operating reserve and marginal cost.

In the past two decades, questions about sexual health have become of pressing concern in light the global rise of the HIV epidemic. Statistics show that young people in sub-Saharan Africa make up the largest percentage of the African population infected with HIV and heterosexual sex is argued as the predominant mode of transmission. There is a growing body of research seeking to understand social determinants such as poverty, gender inequality and violence that contribute broadly to the sexual-wellbeing of young South Africans, however, the impact of religion on the sexual lives of adolescents, despite an overwhelming majority of adolescents reporting close religious affiliation, is not enquired about much nor is it well understood. This study is an exploration and investigation of the intersection of religion and the sexual perceptions, practices and wellbeing of adolescent South Africans. Using a case-study of Teens Ignited (TI), a Charismatic Pentecostal Youth Group in Potchefstroom, a town 100 kms West of Johannesburg, this study in an exploration of the impact of the discourse of sexuality identified at TI, as well as the power relations that impact on the way members of TI understand and experience their sexuality. Using participatory research methods and a survey questionnaire, the perceptual and behavioral sexual patterns reported by the membership of TI is examined and critical insights about the positive and negative contributions of religion to the sexual-wellbeing of the participants of this study are discussed. Drawing largely on Foucauldian understandings of sexuality as a discursive project, the religious messages and power present at TI are analysed. The key findings of this study demonstrate that TI members have knowledge of the official message about sexuality at TI, however, discontinuities and disjuncture identified between the dominant discourse and lived experiences of TI members raise concerns about negative impacts of religion on the way TI members negotiate their sexual lives. The aim of this study is to provide theoretical frameworks related to sexuality and religion as a basis for understanding how the negative contributions of religion to adolescent sexual-wellbeing due to inadequate messaging and unequal relations of power can be redressed and positive contributions such as the sense of belonging TI members experience can be strengthened.

A construção da imagem feminina no cinema tem sido questionada desde os anos 70 pelas teorias e críticas feministas. O modo como a mulher é representada nas telas, desde seu papel como personagem, sua aparência como objeto de desejo masculino até seus comportamentos e atitudes, se baseia em valores machistas e patriarcais que permeiam a sociedade ocidental. As comédias românticas, produzidas especialmente para atrair o público feminino, disseminam suas mensagens sobre true love e happy ending. Devido ao grande alcance do cinema hollywoodiano, essas mensagens são transmitidas por todo o mundo, fomentando o imaginário social das pessoas e reafirmando a desigualdade de gênero através de retratos irrealistas e estereotipados sobre as mulheres e sua função como indivíduo social. Assim, esta pesquisa busca identificar quais são essas mensagens reproduzidas pelos filmes de comédia romântica teen dos anos 90 e debater de que modo eles podem influenciar na vida real das espectadoras.
The construction of the feminine image in cinema has been questioned since the 70’s by feminist theories and criticism. The way women are presented on screens, from their role as characters, their appearance as objects of male desire to their behaviors and attitudes, is based on patriarchal values that permeate western society. Romantic comedies, produced especially to attract female audiences, spread their messages about true love and happy ending. Due to the wide reach of Hollywood cinema, these messages are transmitted all over the world, fostering people's social imagery and reaffirming gender inequality through unrealistic and stereotyped portraits about women and their role as a social individual. Thus, this research seeks to identify what are the messages reproduced by the teen romantic comedy films of the 90’s and to discuss how they can influence the real life of the viewers.
