Although English law recognises that developing adolescents may acquire the capacity to make decisions about medical treatment themselves it does not address the problem of mentally disturbed or disordered adolescents. This article examines the nature of adolescent refusal of treatment and suggests that a line be drawn between three categories of adolescent disturbance—the competent young person who refuses treatment that an adult too may refuse, the rebellious teenager whose refusal is triggered by simple teenage angst, and the mentally ill teenager whose refusal is triggered by mental illnes

During adolescence, many biological, psychological and social changes occur, but in general the process of physical maturation occurs faster than psychological maturation. During adolescence, there are many things that cause people in general to experience mental disorders. Some mental disorders that usually occur are caused by various existing stressors which can cause anxiety disorders, depression and lead to suicide. Adolescents who grow up in a conducive environment will rarely experience mental disorders which are usually suffered by most teenagers who experience these mental disorders. T

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent mental health problems have increased in recent years, and such problems may predispose the adolescent to long-term mental illness in adulthood. In past decades it has become more common for Icelandic teenagers to work while attending school (term-time work). Nevertheless, research is missing on the association between the level of termtime work and mental health. The aim is to examine the association between six types of mental symptoms (tiredness after an adequate night's sleep, difficulty sleeping, depression, stress/anxiety, worries/sadness, and multiple symptoms)

It is important to consider these age distributions in order to understand causes and mechanisms of illness and to intervene at an appropriate juncture for primary and secondary prevention. This article reviews some of the approaches to studying age at onset, sets out the evidence to support the assertion that adult mental disorders begin in adolescence, and finds that perhaps half of all adult mental health disorders have begun by the teenage years.
