Abstract:

AbstractObjective:The aim of the study was to explore how teenagers reason about a parent's recent death and about their life without that parent.Method:A total of 10 teenagers (aged 14–19 years, 7 boys and 3 girls) were interviewed twice, 3–12 months after their parent's death. The interviews were carried out individually and as free-ranging conversations. A content analysis with a descriptive and interpretive design was conducted.Results:Importantly, all teenagers appreciated participating in the interviews. Some had not previously talked in such depth about this with anyone, while others had more open communications within their families and with others. Their parent's death was the worst thing that could happen, but they still expressed the feeling that it had been a relief for both the ill parent and themselves. The death had relieved the parent from suffering and a life with severe illness. Many of the teenagers empathized with the surviving parent's grief and worried about him or her as well as the entire home situation. As a consequence, the teenagers did not show their grief, as they did not want to burden the grieving parent. Seeing the parent grieving could lead to feelings of loneliness and hopelessness and that the support they needed was not there for them. Nevertheless, some teenagers could grieve together with the surviving parent in common understanding and with openness.Significance of Results:A tentative conclusion is that the teenagers who were more likely to talk and grieve together with their surviving parent coped better with their situation than teenagers who did not. Parentally bereaved teenagers tend to take on a responsibility to support the grieving parent, when it is they themselves who need and should receive support.

Due to the widespread of smoking and accessories for it many teenagers in the world and in our country inhale gas for lighter refills (butane) – this phenomenon is called «sniffing». In some cases sudden death occurs at intensive actions. It is connected with the fact that butane is inhalation drug and sensitizes a myocardium to arrhythmogenic effects of catecholamines. In experiments on rats the arrhythmogenic and secondary ischemic effect at butane inhalation has been shown. Death occurs as a result of sudden arrhythmias.

Studies have shown that teenagers, from the time of diagnosis, are already extremely worried about the consequences of a parent's cancer but tend to be left to manage these concerns on their own. The present study aimed to explore young adults' advice to healthcare professionals on how to support teenagers who are losing a parent to cancer.Methods:This work derives from a Swedish nationwide survey and employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive/interpretive design to obtain answers to an open-ended question concerning advice to healthcare professionals. Of the 851 eligible young adults who had lost a parent to cancer when they were 13–16 years of age within the previous 6 to 9 years, 622 participated in our survey (response rate = 73%). Of these 622 young adults, 481 responded to the open-ended question about what advice to give healthcare professionals.Results:Four themes emerged: (1) to be seen and acknowledged; (2) to understand and prepare for illness, treatment, and the impending death; (3) to spend time with the ill parent, and (4) to receive support tailored to the individual teenager's needs.Significance of Results:This nationwide study contributes hands-on suggestions to healthcare staff regarding attitudes, communication, and support from the perspective of young adults who, in their teenage years, lost a parent to cancer. Teenagers may feel better supported during a parent's illness if healthcare professionals take this manageable advice forward into practice and see each teenager as individuals; explain the disease, its treatments, and consequences; encourage teenagers to spend time with their ill parent; and recommend sources of support.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) accounts for up to 450,000 deaths every year in the United States (Zipes et al. (2006)). Most cases of sudden cardiac death occur in subjects with no prior history of heart disease (Myerburg et al. (1998)). The incidence of sudden death in a general population has been shown to increase contemporaneously with substance abuse (Phillips et al. (1999)). The causative association of sudden death with cocaine, methadone, and volatile agents is well established (Adgey et al. (1995) and Isner et al. (1986)). We describe a case of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest temporally related to abuse of the synthetic cannabinoid street drug known as K2. To our knowledge, there are no previously documented cases of sudden cardiac death associated with synthetic cannabinoids although they have been linked to myocardial infarction in teenagers despite normal coronary angiography (Mir et al. (2011)).

Background. Teenage pregnancy being a high risk condition requires skilled attention for good outcome. Objectives. To determine the influence of antenatal care on perinatal outcome in teenage pregnancies in Calabar. Materials and Methods. A review of patient records in Calabar was conducted between 1st January, 2006 and 31st December, 2010, to determine perinatal outcome in teenage pregnancy. Results. Teenage pregnancy accounted for 644 (6.5%) of the total deliveries with 245 (38.0%) booked while 399 (62.0%) were unbooked. Teenage mothers contributed significantly to the proportion of women who were delivered without prior antenatal care (; ). The mean duration of labour in booked teenagers was hours, while unbooked teenagers was hours (t-value ; ). There was statistically more caesarean sections among unbooked teenage pregnancies than booked (; ). Stillbirth was statistically significant (; ) among unbooked teenagers than booked. However, early neonatal death was not significantly different between booked and unbooked teenage pregnancies(; ). Conclusion. Unbooked teenage pregnancies were significantly associated with increased operative intervention and poor perinatal outcome.

Abstract:

The frequency in which today's teenagers have had to confront the death of a peer is understated. A convenience sample of sixty-eight adolescents responded to a 22-question survey instrument addressing the experience with the death of a peer. Eighty-seven percent indicated they had experienced the death of a peer; 13 percent had never experienced the death of a peer (although most replied involvement and awareness of a relative's death). Of the total response, 20 percent indicated that they had more than one experience with the death of a peer. The tool was divided into two sections: death due to illness and death resulting from accidents, or suicide. This descriptive, exploratory study describes adolescent grief reactions, participation in post-death activities (funerals, memorial services) and identification of support systems.

Introduction. One of the major public health issues across the whole world these days is teenage pregnancy which is defined as being pregnant in the age ranging from 13–19 years. About 11% of all births which occurred worldwide accounted for girls aged 15 to 19 years. From these, 95% teenage deliveries occur in low- and middle-income countries. World health 2014 statistics show that complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the second cause of death for 15–19-year-old girls globally. The aim of this study was to determine adverse obstetrical and perinatal outcomes of teenage pregnancy among deliveries at Lemlem Karl General Hospital, Tigray, Ethiopia, 2018. Result. This study result showed that 17.5% of the teenagers and 6.8% of the adults deliver low birth weight neonates. From the total teenage mothers, about thirty-five (11.3%) of them had developed pregnancy-induced hypertension, whereas about thirteen (4.2%) of adults develop pregnancy-induced hypertension. Regarding cesarean delivery, forty (12.9%) of those teenage mothers deliver by a cesarean section while 58 (18%) of the adult mothers deliver by cesarean delivery. Teenage pregnancy was significantly associated with adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes, a cesarean delivery (AOR: 0.57; 95% CI, 0.36–0.90), episiotomy (AOR: 2.01; 95% CI, 1.25–3.39), and low birth weight (AOR: 2.22; 95% CI, 1.13–4.36), and premature delivery were 2.87 (1.49–5.52). This study shows that adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes were significantly associated with teenagers than adult mothers. Therefore, giving health education on focused ANC is very important to bring change to the teenager at this study area.

Abstract:

The authors present a quantitative and qualitative study on homicides among teenagers in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, based on a historical series during the 1990s and the life and death histories in this group, with a special focus on 1997. In that year there were 68 homicides in which the victims were from 10 to 19 years old. Of the 68, 62 were males and only 6 females, or a ratio of 10:1, showing that young males are more vulnerable and susceptible to being murdered. The data indicate that cause of death is influenced by gender culture and that homicides are based on power and status symbols characterizing a kind of virility. This expression of virility in the shaping of violence also appears in the domination of the female body observed in homicides with young women as the victims. The life and death histories of these teenagers highlight the pertinence of the gender-based analysis as a theoretical-analytical category, in addition to analyses considering socioeconomic aspects and social inequity.

Suicide attempts made by the patients suffering from depression should be considered as a special case in the general category of suicidal and self-injurious behavior. The paper is aimed at describing the examples of psychotherapeutic work with three 16-year-old teenagers who were diagnosed with severe depressive episode and had made a true suicide attempt. It explains the specificity of their mental status in dy- namic perspective. The set of the personal characteristics peculiar for such teenage pa- tients includes sensitivity, disposition to reflexivity, higher level of personal and social anxiety, self-esteem disturbance, cognitive distortions (negative selection, polarized thinking, personalization, catastrophizing), low frustration tolerance, perfectionism, low social competence, lack of problem-solving skills. On the basis of these and other cases of severe depressive episodes the author defines the goals for individual and family therapy, the possibilities and perspectives of psychotherapeutic treatment.

The article presents the actual problem of teenagers’ suicides as a reflection of the realities of the modern information society. The research methodology was made up of a general scientific method, namely the analysis of scientific literature on the research topic, as well as methods of statistical data analysis, which made it possible to prove that the modern information society increases the threats in the field of adolescent suicide. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the individual psychological characteristics of children and teenagers affect the formation of their propensity for suicidal behavior. In adolescence, children have not yet formed an adequate attitude towards death, which can lead to committing suicide for seemingly insignificant reasons.The main conclusion that we have made basing on the results of the study is the following: adolescence is a very dangerous and unstable period in the development of an individual. Social structure, environment, various events - all these things can have a detrimental effect on the vulnerable, fragile psyche of a teenager.The Internet is a separate and very significant threat, as the global network contains dangerous content. In a modern fragmented society, a teenager is usually left to himself, and if, at the same time, he does not have an emotional contact with his parents (and this contact, as a rule, is absent during this period even in fairly prosperous families), then the teenager has no one to share his experiences or consult.Thus, an unhealthy society creates unhealthy conditions for the development of future generations, and as a result, modern children choose death without even knowing life.

Abstract:

The article discusses the attitude towards life and death in adolescents with cancer. The behavioral, cognitive and emotional components of the attitude to life and death in adolescents with cancer are described. Surveyed 83 teenagers. The main group - adolescents with cancer in remission (41 people), the average age of adolescents was 14 ± 1.1 years. The time spent in the department of rehabilitation treatment ranged from 7 to 21 days. The comparison group - pupils of Secondary School №7 (42 people), the average age of adolescents was 14 ± 1.1 years. Psychodiagnostic methods were used: 1) Death Attitude Profile-Revised Questionnaire; 2) Questionnaire with elements of an associative experiment, specially designed for the study; 3) Drawing projective technique “Drawing life and death”, R.V. Kadyrov. In the course of the study, the influence of the characteristics of attitudes towards life and death on the process of rehabilitation treatment and rehabilitation was revealed. Differences in attitudes towards life and death in adolescents also identified. In adolescents with cancer, the fear of death is more pronounced, the concept of life after death has more religious ideas than in the comparison group, and death perceived as a way to avoid life problems. They are less responsible about their future, the concept of the meaning of life is abstract or not formed.

Secara psikososial, remaja dapat terkucil, merasa malu, depresi, putus sekolah, sulit bekerja, miskin dan menambah pertumbuhan penduduk. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui gambaran epidemiologi dan faktor determinan dengan kehamilan pranikah remaja di Kabupaten Sumedang. Rancangan studi yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah rancangan studi cross sectional. Penelitian ini menemukan prevalensi kehamilan pranikah remaja di Kabupaten Sumedang tinggi (40,5%). Faktor yang berhubungan dengan kehamilan pranikah remaja meliputi usia ketika hamil, frekuensi pacaran, pola asuh orang tua, keutuhan pernikahan orang tua dan keterpaparan teman. Disarankan untuk melakukan peningkatan metoda pelayanan kesehatan reproduksi dan seksualitas dikalangan remaja, menambah jumlah kader remaja (peer educator) melalui pendidikan dan pelatihan. Meningkatkan keterlibatan orang tua mendampingi remaja melalui masa transisi kehidupan, mendirikan pusat konsultasi dan youth centre.Kata kunci : Kehamilan pranikah, remaja, kabupaten sumedang.AbstractPre-marital pregnancy among teenagers is one phenomenon occurred in adolescent’s life that can affect the reproductive health status physically, mentally and socially. It causes complication leading to death risk for both mother and her infant. Psycho-socially, teenagers could be isolated, felt ashamed, deppressed, being dropped out of school, difficult to find job, sunk into poverty, and increase population growth rate. This research objective is to describe the epidemiologic situation of pre-marital pregnancy among teenagers and to investigate its determinant factors in Sumedang District. This research found prevalence of pre-marital pregnancy of 40.5%. There are several factors related to pre-marital preganncy, that is, age, frequency of having a dating relationship, parental control, success of parental marriage, and peer exposure. Parental control has the highest OR of 2,90. Based on this research it is suggested to improve reproductive health services including teenage sexual education, to increase the number of peer educator through adequate education and training,and to improve parent’s involvement to accompany their teenagers through difficult phase of life’s transition, and to establish consultation for teenager center.Key words : Pre-marital pregnancy, teenagers, sumedang district.

1 Sudden death is a recognized hazard of volatile substance abuse and may occur during exposure or in the subsequent hours. Intoxication may also lead to indirect deaths due to trauma. 2 Specific post-mortem features have not as yet been identified either macroscopically or microscopically in VSA-related deaths. Toxicological examination for volatile substances of all unnatural teenage deaths is strongly recommended. 3 Four mechanisms for acute, direct VSA-related deaths are discussed, viz anoxia, vagal inhibition, respiratory depression and cardiac arrhythmia. Of these, cardiac arrhythmia due to 'sensitization' of the heart to adrenaline is probably the most common and is well documented in experimental conditions. 4 Deaths from cardiac arrhythmia during or soon after VSA are unpredictable, unpreventable and resuscitation is rarely successful. Previous uneventful sessions of abuse provide no protection from this mode of death.

BackgroundTeenage motherhood is relatively common in the UK, but little is known about related health inequalities in this population. We estimated cause-specific mortality risks over three decades in a nationally representative cohort.MethodWe examined premature mortality in a 1.1% sample of all women who were teenagers in England and Wales during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s using data from the Office for National Statistics Longitudinal Study (ONS LS). Our primary outcome was suicide. Long-term follow-up to 31 December 2006, to a potential maximum age of 49 years, was achieved through near-complete routine linkage to national mortality records. We created a time-dependent exposure variable, with relative risks estimated according to age when women first experienced motherhood versus a reference group of those currently without children.ResultsWomen who were teenage mothers were around 30% more likely to die prematurely by any cause and almost 60% more likely to die unnaturally, whereas first-time motherhood at mature age conferred lower risk compared to women without children. Teenage motherhood was associated with a more than doubled risk of suicide [mortality rate ratio (MRR) 2.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.30–3.83], and elevated risks of fatal cancer of the cervix and lung were also found. Changing the reference category to first-time mothers at 20 years and above also revealed a significant elevation in risk of accidental death.ConclusionsThe complex psychosocial needs of these women require greater attention from clinicians, public health professionals, social services and policymakers. Their elevated risk of poor health outcomes may persist well beyond the actual teenage motherhood years.

Teenagers’ high rates of motor vehicle crashes, accounting for 40% of external deaths among 16-19 yearolds, have been ascribed largely to inherent “adolescent risk-taking” and developmental hazards. However, the fact that compared to adults 25 and older, teenagers are twice as likely to live in poverty and low-income areas, risk factors for many types of violent death, has not been assessed. This paper uses Fatality Analysis Reporting System data on 65,173 fatal motor vehicle crashes by drivers in California’s 35 most populous counties for 1994-2007 to analyze fatal crash involvements per 100 million miles driven by driver age, county, poverty status, and 15 other traffic safety-related variables. Fatal crash rates were substantially higher for every driver age group in poorer counties than in richer ones. Multivariate regression found socioeconomic factors, led by the low levels of licensing and high unemployment rates prevalent in low-income areas, were associated with nearly 60% of the variance in motor vehicle crash risks, compared to 3% associated with driver age. The strong association between fatal crash risk and poverty, especially for young drivers who are concentrated in high-poverty brackets and low-income areas, suggests that factors related to poorer environments constitute a major traffic safety risk requiring serious attention.

Abstract Background: Teenage pregnancies are associated with negative outcomes. Prevention requires understanding them and their families. Objectives: This study aimed to describe personal and family attributes of pregnant teenagers in Sri Lanka. Methods: This was a community-based study in Sri Lanka among 510 pregnant teenagers. Results: Half (50%) of the subjects were 19 years of age at the time of pregnancy. A majority (79.8%) had studied up to grades 6–11. Confidence in decision-making (80.7%) and in refusing unnecessary requests (88.3%) was “excellent” in a majority. Mean age of marriage/co-habiting was 17.6 years. For 31%, marriage/cohabiting was a sudden decision taken jointly with their partner (81.6%) and 83% reported being “legally” married. Substantial proportions of mothers (17.6%) and fathers (13.9%) had not attended school, and 33.1% mothers had worked abroad. Teenagers reported the death of a parent (14.1%), parental separation (10.9%) and being brought up by relatives (20%). Only a few rated strictness of rules/regulations (32.4%), freedom to discuss problems regarding puberty (25.5%), love affairs (12.7%) and sexuality (26.7%) as excellent/good. Of the spouses, 12.9% were <20 years, 71.9% had low education and 98.8% were employed. A majority had “planned” the pregnancy, and for 79.8%, the reason was “husband’s wish to have a baby”. Conclusions: Pregnant teenagers were mostly in their late teens, from poor families and with low formal education. Though teenagers showed confidence in decision-making, the decision to have a pregnancy had mostly been their spouses. Parents and spouses of the teenagers were also young, less educated and poor. There was evidence of poor parenting practices.

Youthful driving while intoxicated (DWI) is a leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults. In spite of great social concern about teenagers and DWI, definitive studies are lacking which characterize youth who are at a high risk for this problem behavior. The present study uses a large representative sample of over 11,000 New York State secondary school students aged 16 years and older. The relationships between DWI, alcohol use, other drug use and numerous social factors are explored using multivariate analysis. Driving while intoxicated is found to be a prevalent problem, occurring among almost a quarter of the high school students in the past year. DWI is strongly related to various sociodemographic factors such as age, sex, ethnicity and geographic region. Furthermore, DWI is found to be part of a complex network of adolescent problem behaviors including other alcohol-related problems, illicit drug abuse and school misconduct.

This work is grounded in my professional practice as a teacher in middle schools in vulnerable neighborhoods in the southern part of the city of Buenos Aires. In this article I will focus on the relationship between middleschool education for teenagers from vulnerable contexts and specific processes of violence and exclusion such as "slow death" and "necropolitics". The hypothesis I will present is that in certain contexts, the educational system encourages and (re)produces a politics of death that exposes these male identities to greater risk. I will also contend that this has its correlation in the construction of identities. Finally, I will suggest that critical and queer pedagogies can provide tools for resistance and transformation.

ABSTRACT We report 2 cases of teenagers who were poisoned with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) and presented to the emergency department with a severe acute anticholinergic toxidrome after ingestion of several hundred seeds. The patients presented with visual hallucinations, disorientation, incomprehensible and nonsensical speech, and dilated sluggish pupils. Both patients required restraints for combativeness until adequate sedation with lorazepam and haloperidol was achieved. Jimson weed is found in southern Canada and the United States and can cause acute anticholinergic poisoning and death in humans and animals. The treatment of choice for anticholinergic poisoning is mainly supportive care and gastrointestinal decontamination with activated charcoal. Jimson weed intoxication should be considered in cases of patients presenting with unexplained peripheral and central anticholinergic symptoms including delirium, agitation and seizures, especially among younger patients and partygoers. It is important that health care professionals recognize that Jimson weed is a toxic, indigenous, “wild” growing plant, subject to misuse and potentially serious intoxication requiring hospitalization.

There is a dearth of research investigating youths’ experience of grief and mourning after the death of close friends or family. Even less research has explored the question of how youth use social media sites to engage in the grieving process. This study employs qualitative analysis and natural language processing to examine tweets that follow 2 deaths. First, we conducted a close textual read on a sample of tweets by Gakirah Barnes, a gang-involved teenaged girl in Chicago, and members of her Twitter network, over a 19-day period in 2014 during which 2 significant deaths occurred: that of Raason “Lil B” Shaw and Gakirah’s own death. We leverage the grief literature to understand the way Gakirah and her peers express thoughts, feelings, and behaviors at the time of these deaths. We also present and explain the rich and complex style of online communication among gang-involved youth, one that has been overlooked in prior research. Next, we overview the natural language processing output for expressions of loss and grief in our data set based on qualitative findings and present an error analysis on its output for grief. We conclude with a call for interdisciplinary research that analyzes online and offline behaviors to help understand physical and emotional violence and other problematic behaviors prevalent among marginalized communities.

Since 2003, Institut Paoli-Calmettes (IPC), a French Comprehensive Cancer Centre, has set up a welcome and meeting time dedicated to families and specifically to children whose parents are undergoing or have undergone cancer treatment. The project of ”Les Gouters de l´IPC” (IPC snacks) is to allow children and parents to talk about cancer and death, expected or lived. The framework of this research-action consists of an evaluation of this approach: How to support children through this event, define and evaluate proposals for support and care, refine and disseminate them? Methods: 1500 children, from few months to teenagers, were met in 15 years. Families welcomed in “Les Gouters de l´IPC” were contacted by post and phone and asked for a home or IPC research interview, conducted individually. More than 1200 answered and 870 interviews were realized. Data collection was recorded using participant observation and free interview technique. Results: The results of this research are communicated here for the first time. Children hesitate between hypermaturity and regressive tendencies, resigned and impulsive conducts, need of power and guilt. Misunderstanding and communication breakdown are real risks, sometimes isolation and withdrawal. Conclusion: Children can´t cross these dramas smoothly and painless. But those concerned will not suffer for the rest of their lives. The death of a parent is a wound. In this unimaginable ordeal, children must be able to count upon our unqualified solidarity.

The purpose of this study was to describe how Black adolescent males understand “second-line” (musical processions) and “regular”/traditional funeral rituals in New Orleans following the violent deaths of significant persons in their lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Black males between the ages of 12 and 15 using descriptive phenomenology methodology. Findings revealed that these participants understood death as a cause for celebration, remembrance, and unity related to their experiences with the second-line ritual. Three elements of the life world of Black teenage males were descriptive of second lines, including: a) observed locations of second lines; b) dancing to good music; and c) observed messages conveyed through t-shirts. Participants provided gender-based descriptions of perceived spoken and unspoken rights in grieving at the two distinct rituals. Related to their second-line experience, the teens reflect on ways in which they wish to have their deaths ritualized.

We first heard about this case from nurses in one of our intensive care units (ICUs) while we were conducting an inservice. When the session was over, we discussed it between ourselves, and decided that it must have been misrepresented. The case had been presented as one of a teenager who was brain dead, had been so for six months, yet had been brought into the ICU for treatment. We have run into this before, we thought: medical professionals confusing brain death with persistent vegetative state (PVS). But, of course, we reasoned, no one can be brain dead for six months. To us, as it would to many, the case sounded like a clinical and ethical impossibility. A week later, we were called by an attending physician from another ICU, at the urging of that unit's nursing staff. They had a patient who was brain dead, whose presence was causing distress among the staff. Ronald Chamberlain, a fifteen-year-old boy, had been a patient at a nearby longterm rehabilitation facility that is equipped to care for ventilator-dependent patients.

Underaged drinking‖ by Californians younger than 21 generates perpetual concern, but the toll ―overaged drinkers‖ 21 and older inflict on children and teenagers has not been quantified. This study extracts Fatality Analysis Reporting System crash cases involving California drivers testing positive for alcohol use along with those of the other drivers, passengers, and nonoccupants in the same crashes for 1998-2007 and arranges them in cross tabulations showing the ages of drinking drivers in fatal crashes by ages, injury severity, and types of victims. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates are used to project all alcohol-related traffic victimizations. Californians age 21 and older who drank and drove caused approximately 235,000 crashes from 1998-2007 victimizing persons under age 20, killing more than 400 children under age 16 and 400 teens age 16-19 and injuring nearly 80,000 children and teens. Drinking over-21 drivers caused most alcohol-related victimizations of teenage vehicle passengers and nonoccupants and victimized more sober teenage drivers than drinking teen drivers victimized sober over-21 drivers. If tabulated as a separate mortality cause, ―overaged drinking and driving‖ would be the fifth leading cause of death to California teens age 16-19 and the sixth leading cause for children ages 1- 15. The findings suggest ―overaged drinking‖ represents as severe a hazard to teenagers as ―underaged drinking.‖

Rubber and plastic ammunition was used by the Israeli Defence Forces between the years 1987 and 1993 (Intifada) almost exclusively as a deterrent to aggression by the Palestinian civilian population in the occupied territories of Gaza, Judea and Samaria. While designed to avoid the serious wounds and deaths caused by the use of conventional military ammunition, the firing of rubber and plastic bullets has resulted in extensive injuries and more than 20 deaths. The data from the autopsies of 17 of these victims, mostly teenagers, were analysed. Ten of the victims died from injuries inflicted by Improved Rubber Bullets, while the other seven succumbed to injuries caused by Plastic Bullets. In most instances, the cause of death was related to injuries to the brain. Ballistic features of non-conventional bullets are discussed, and suggestions to curtail the serious injuries and fatalities arising from their use are given, with emphasis on firing from a safe range. British and South African experience with this type of ammunition is compared with our observations.

More teenagers in the United States die from gunshot wounds than from all natural causes of disease combined. Firearm-related mortality accounts for almost half of all deaths among African American teens. Residents of central cities have the highest probability of experiencing violent crimes. This article describes an innovative community-based intervention designed to break the cycle of violence among youth in metropolitan Atlanta. The intervention, Kids Alive and Loved (KAL), emerged from the African American community as one mother's response to the violent death of her 17-year-old son. The authors describe how her response to tragedy gave birth to a culturally appropriate intervention for youth exposed to violence. This article delineates the evolution of KAL, the role of community partners in the design of the intervention, and how diffusion of innovation theory has implications for understanding the KAL approach to breaking the cycle of violence.

ObjectiveGuidelines recommend individual decision making on resuscitating infants of 22–24 weeks’ gestational age (GA) at birth. When the decision not to resuscitate is made, infants would likely die soon after delivery, and under some circumstances such neonatal deaths may be registered as stillbirths occurring during delivery (intrapartum stillbirth). Thus we assessed whether socioeconomic factors are associated with peridelivery deaths (during or within 1 hour of delivery) of infants delivered at 22–24 weeks’ gestation.MethodsWe analysed 14 726 singletons of 22–24 weeks’ GA using the 2003–2011 Japanese vital statistics, and assessed how maternal characteristics influence risk of peridelivery death as well as intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) and death after 1 hour of age until 40 weeks postmenstrual age.ResultsLiving in a municipality with low-average income (lowest tertile (risk ratio 1.32, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.44), middle tertile (risk ratio 1.08, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.19)), younger maternal age (age <20 (risk ratio 1.43, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.75), age 20–34 (risk ratio 1.14, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.27)) and having previous live births (risk ratio 1.08, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.17) increased risk of peridelivery deaths, but did not increase risk of IUFD or deaths after 1 hour of age. Peridelivery death was twice as likely to occur in births to multiparous teenage mothers in a low-income municipality, compared with those of older primiparous mothers in a wealthier municipality.ConclusionsSocioeconomic factors substantially influence whether births of 22–24 weeks’ GA survive delivery and the first hour of life. Such disparities may reflect the impact of socioeconomic situations on decision making for resuscitation.

Bromochlorodifluoromethane (Halon 1211) is a widely used fire extinguishing agent. Several cases of sudden death in teenagers associated with BCF abuse have been reported. BCF is used as a fire extinguisher in battle tanks. Two young previously healthy male soldiers were accidentally exposed to BCF in a battle tank. The tank driver died, but the gunner survived the event with no medical complications. It is concluded that BCF should be used in confined chambers only after the evacuation of all personnel.

Background Teenage pregnancies constitute a serious health and social problem worldwide. World estimates in 2008 report about 16 million births to adolescent mothers, most of them occurring in low and middle income countries. Objective To assess pregnancy co-morbidities and outcome of teenage pregnancy. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted at obstetrics and gynecological department of Dhulikhel Hospital. Study was conducted for 18 month period from 1-07-2013 to 30-12-2014. All teenage pregnancy cases admitted at the time of study period were enrolled. Purposive sampling technique was used. Data were collected by face to face interview using clinical Performa and through record file of the patient. Collected data were analyzed in SPSS version 21.0. Result Total of 527 teenage mothers of varying age group (15 to 19 years) were enrolled in the study. Teenagers who had never been to school were 3.0%; 66.2% of them were from low socioeconomic background , and 58.6% were from rural areas. Pregnancy co-morbidities detected were, Urinary tract infection (UTI) 18.4%, threatened preterm 12.9% followed by ante partum hemorrhage 4.7%. However, other major co-morbidities such as hypertensive disorder, gestational diabetes found to be very less such as, hypertension 0.8% and gestational diabetes found in only one woman. Conclusion Maternal and newborn outcome and co-morbidities among teenage pregnant women found less compare to other studies. Major pregnancy related morbidities such as hypertension, pre-eclampsia and diabetes were found very less. Most common maternal morbidity found was urinary tract infection during pregnancy but statistically not significant. Similarly, newborn mean weight was more than 2.5 kg and neonatal death found very less. However, teenage pregnancy is significantly associated with low economic status, illiteracy status, willingness to marriage by teenagers and ethnicity.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, though no case reports of teenage deaths due to the disease were found after extensive literary research. A case is presented of a 17-year-old male driver involved in a motor vehicle collision. Autopsy examination revealed multiple blunt force injuries. Approximately 3 mm of the middle portion of the left anterior descending coronary artery displayed about 90% atherosclerotic stenosis. It was determined that the cause of death was ventricular fibrillation due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The consultation with the parents and possible finding of hypercholesterolemia are discussed in the report.

Abstract:

AbstractIn young patients with unexplained ventricular fibrillation, coronary occlusion may be missed by echocardiogram and misinterpreted by CT. We report two patients presenting with ventricular fibrillation and initially negative workup, later identified to have occlusion of left main coronary artery. We demonstrate the importance of angiography to rule out coronary occlusion in patients with unexplained ventricular fibrillation.
