Abstract:
The paper presents the results of an empirical study on the personality traits of sexually active teenagers. The research identified the personality traits of teenagers who are inclined to look for sexual relations. The research focused on the following: motivation and values, implicit representations about sexual contacts, parent-child relations, and self-concept. The study comprised 465 individuals including 405 school students aged 14-16 and 60 mothers of the teenagers examined. The results demonstrate that teenagers' refusal to begin sexual life, provided they have this opportunity (i.e. a partner), is linked to their subjective perception of the basic values reflected in their consciousness. The research also focused on the features of teenagers' implicit representations with regard to sexual intercourse. This allowed to identify the role of sexual intercourse in teenagers' life. The factors regulating sexual relations in the age under study have been revealed. The research shows that teenage sexual intercourse is mainly driven by cognitive motives combined with the hedonistic (boys) and communicational/social ones (girls). Emotionally distant parents are another factor triggering sexual relations. The negatively critical attitude to sexual partners was also displayed, especially by girls. The attitude was expressed by teenagers even where they initiated sexual intercourse themselves, without been pressured into it by their partners. The study has an applied character and enables effective preventive and corrective work with sexually active teenagers.

Abstract:
Teenage life is not far from romance and identity formation. Programs on television have an essential role in shaping the lives of these teenagers. Teenagers use media such as television to form perceptions and images of how relationships are. Not only relationships, but the programs on television also show a lot of sexual content, which is a source of sexual information for said teenagers. Because of these television programs, teenagers expect their lives to be like what is shown on television, as explained in cultivation theory. This study analyzes how Euphoria season one creates expectations through its depiction of relationships and sexual behaviors. All Euphoria season one episodes were gathered to analyze the frequency of relationships and sexual behaviors portrayed to an adolescent audience. This research explores the types of relationships, ages, genders, and sexual behaviors shown and implied using a frequency distribution table and cross-tabulation. The results show all episodes consisted of sexual behavior, suggesting that a television program significantly impacts on a teenager's sexual socialization.

Abstract:
Teenagers, as the nation's next generation, have the right to optimal growth and development, as well as the assurance of their survival, free of discrimination and mistreatment, and protection from a variety of health concerns. This group has health issues, owing to a proclivity towards risky behavior. Strengthening teenagers' abilities to inhibit sexual behavior in teenagers is the solution to this problem. This activity was carried out in Bangunjiwo Village, Kasihan, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Through video media, lectures, and peer group discussions, this program aims to educate youth about risky sexual behavior. The results of the program indicate that health education using video media, lectures, and peer groups can improve rural teenage knowledge and attitudes about risky sexual behavior. This activity is expected to promote teenager understanding, attitudes, and reduce risky sexual activity, as well as provide a venue for seeking alternate solutions to reproductive health problems.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: to test a theoretical model based on the Parent-Based Expansion of the Theory of Planned Behavior examining relation between selected parental, teenager and cultural variables and Latino teenagers' intentions to engage in sexual behavior.METHOD: a cross-sectional correlational design based on a secondary data analysis of 130 Latino parent and teenager dyads.RESULTS: regression and path analysis procedures were used to test seven hypotheses and the results demonstrated partial support for the model. Parent familism and knowledge about sex were significantly associated with parents' attitudes toward sexual communication with their teenagers. Parent Latino acculturation was negatively associated with parents' self-efficacy toward sexual communication with their teenagers and positevely associated with parents' subjective norms toward sexual communication with their teenagers. Teenager knowledge about sex was significantly associated with higher levels of teenagers' attitudes and subjective norms about sexual communication with parents. Only the predictor of teenagers' attitudes toward having sex in the next 3 months was significantly associated with teenagers' intentions to have sex in the next 3 months.CONCLUSION: the results of this study provide important information to guide future research that can inform development of interventions to prevent risky teenager sexual behavior among Latinos.

Abstract:
Background: It is recorded in Semarang that nearly 50% of the teenagers have conducted premarital sexual intercourse at the age 10-15 years. One of the efforts to prevent it is by reproduction health education at school to improve the teenagers’ knowledge and health behavior. Objective: The research objective is to find out the relation of school role in health education with reproduction health behavior on high school teenagers in Semarang. Methods: The research was conducted in 2017, which is a correlation description research with a quantitative approach. The population is all high school students in Semarang, i.e. 6620 students, the sample taking technique is by purposive sampling with 178 respondents. Questionnaire instruments were used to collect data on the role of schools and adolescent reproductive health behaviors. The questionnaire was tested for validity and reliability first. In addition, additional instruments such as APARQ are used, which are standard questionnaires for measuring physical activity and standard recall, so validity and reliability tests are not needed. Data was analysed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate with SPSS. Results: There was a significant role of school in the teenager’s reproduction health behavior (p-value 0.023), there was no significant effect of the dating status on the teenager reproduction health behavior with (p-value 0.693), there was a significant effect of teenager knowledge to teenager reproduction health behavior (p-value 0.012) and there was no significant relation between teenage physical activity and teenager reproduction health behavior in Semarang (p-value 0.370). Conclusion: The role of the school is directly related through knowledge to the reproduction health behavior where the policy and activity have the highest effect on knowledge. Moreover, age, dating status, and physical activity do not directly relate to the reproduction health behavior of high school teenagers in Semarang. Besides, result demonstrate that school has a high role in teenager knowledge compared to other variables in this research.

Abstract:
Adolescence signifies a pivotal transition from childhood to adulthood, marked by various explorations, including sexual behavior. The prevalence of casual sexual behavior among teenagers has raised concerns, influenced by numerous factors, notably the quality of parent-teenager relationships. However, a significant knowledge gap persists among adolescents regarding the meaning and consequences of free sexual behavior. This study aimed to explore the relationship between teenagers' knowledge concerning the impact of promiscuous sexual behavior in SMA Negeri 1 South Payabungan, Class XI IPS. Using an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional approach, the study involved 32 participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire to assess teenagers' knowledge levels. Analysis revealed that the majority of respondents exhibited good knowledge (65.6%), with a minority demonstrating sufficient (15.6%) or insufficient knowledge (18.8%). Furthermore, statistical analysis unveiled correlations between knowledge levels and certain demographic factors, such as age (p value = 0.572), environment (p value = 0.597), and information sources (p value = 0.000). These findings underscore the importance of addressing knowledge gaps and enhancing awareness among teenagers regarding the repercussions of casual sexual behavior. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for targeted interventions and educational initiatives to empower teenagers with comprehensive knowledge and promote responsible sexual behavior in SMA Negeri 1 South Payabungan, ultimately contributing to healthier adolescent development.

Abstract:
Background: Teenagers are at a turning point in people’s physical and psychological maturity and are also in a critical period in reproductive and sexual health. It is reported that the initial age at first sexual behavior is younger than decades ago, which implies that the risky sexual behavior among teenagers may be on the rise. However, it is unclear about the changes of sexual knowledge and behaviors in recent years. Methods: Based on the national sentinel surveillance survey in 2011–2021 among students in Hangzhou, we selected out teenagers aged 10–19 years as our study sample. Demographic characteristics (gender, age, marital status, etc.), knowledge of HIV and sexual behaviors were collected. The sexual knowledge score and sexual behaviors were analyzed, and their influencing factors were explored. Results: In total, 1355 teenagers were incorporated in this study; the awareness rates of sexual knowledge in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2021 were 74.9%, 71.8%, 89.3% and 95.8%, respectively, which showed an overall upward trend. The results of binary logistic regression showed that the survey year, whether students had received and participated in HIV-related publicity services and whether they had sexual behaviors, had a significant influence on whether the awareness rate ≥ 75%. The survey year and whether the awareness rate ≥ 75% had a significant influence on whether students had sexual behaviors. Conclusions: Both the average scores and awareness rates of teenagers’ sexual knowledge showed an overall upward trend from 2011 to 2021. Teenagers’ initial sexual behavior was at a low age, and the proportion of teenagers who had fixed, temporary and commercial heterosexual sex was still relatively high despite no significant increasing. Therefore, we should further strengthen health education on the risks of sexual behaviors from schools, families and health-related institutions to ensure teenagers receive HIV-related publicity services.

Abstract:
Introduction: The teenage age group is the most vulnerable category to various negative behaviors, such as risky sexual behavior. Consequently, there is an increase in adolescent health issues, such as the spread of sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, early marriages, and abortions. Parents play a crucial role in providing the foundations of teenagers' personalities and guiding them to make responsible decisions, including those related to their sexuality. All forms of interaction between parents and teenagers manifest in the form of parenting styles. In addition to the role of parents, teenagers themselves must also have high self-efficacy to avoid premarital sexual behavior. Objective: This study aims to examining the relationship between parenting styles and self-efficacy with premarital sexual behavior among high school adolescents in Gunungkidul Regency. Method: This study is a quantitative research employing a cross-sectional study design. Results: Adolescents engaging in premarital sexual behavior have a risk of 36.21%. There is a significant relationship between parenting styles and premarital sexual behavior among high school adolescents (p < 0.05). There is also a significant relationship between self-efficacy and premarital sexual behavior. Gender and peer influence are significantly associated with premarital sexual behavior (p < 0.05), while exposure to information is not related to premarital sexual behavior (p > 0.05). The study concludes that adolescents who receive permissive parenting styles and have low self-efficacy are more likely to engage in risky premarital sexual behavior.

Abstract:
Despite the rapid increase of HIV infections among South Africa's adolescent population, many teenagers continue to partake in sexually risky behaviours. The theory of planned action accounts for the low correlation between information and behaviour by identifying the strong influence of behavioural intentions, attitudes towards the behaviour, subjective norms, and perceived control in determining behaviour change. This research primarily aimed to assess the levels of sexual risk-taking behaviours, HIV-related knowledge, beliefs, and religiosity of private school adolescents, as well as to determine the nature of the relationships between these variables.

Heath, Lance Julian. "Operationally defining sexual orientation : towards the development of a fundamental measure of adolescent sexual responsiveness variations." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003564.

Full text
Abstract:
Much published work has pointed to the need for the development of a sound operational definition of sexual orientation in order to enable the research in this area to progress. To contribute to this process the current research set out to develop two measures of sexual orientation and examine their psychometric properties. In order to develop relevant tools historical, conceptual and operational definitions of sexual orientation were critically examined and standard questionnaire development techniques applied. The first scale consisted of 32 items and was administered to a total of 835 adolescents, comprising three sub-groups (189 Grade 11 Scholars, 547 First Year and 99 Third Year Psychology Students). A Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.85 was calculated indicating that this instrument had very good internal consistency reliability. Similar factors emerged in each of the sample sub-groups when factor analyses were performed suggesting that this instrument has good external and construct validities. These factors each had respectable Cronbach alpha coefficients indicating their own internal consistency. The four factors which consistently emerged were Same Sex Responsiveness, Opposite Sex Responsiveness, Previous Month’s Same Sex Responsiveness and Previous Month’s Opposite Sex Responsiveness. The second scale consisted of 16 items and was administered to 646 adolescents, comprising the latter two sub-groups referred to above. A Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.82 was calculated indicating that this instrument also had very good internal consistency reliability. Once again similar factors with generally good internal consistency emerged in factor analysis suggesting that this too was a valid instrument. The factors that emerged from the second scale were Same Sex Responsiveness, Unattractive Opposite Sex Responsiveness, Attractive Opposite Sex Responsiveness and Attraction. Future developments, adjustments and applications of the instruments as well as implications for the arena of sexual orientation research are discussed. In the light of the dearth of information with regard to the sexual orientations of South African adolescents the current study also briefly explored and presented the sample’s responses in terms of the dimensions of each questionnaire as well as how each emerging factor related to the demographics (education level, gender, sexual orientation self-label and age) of the sample.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to find the relationship between adolescent premarital sexual activity and involvement in the family, school, and church. The sample was composed of 192 adolescents. The data were analyzed for significant relationships by using chi square test of independence. The study found that there were significant relationships between adolescent premarital sexual activity and family structure, family mobility, parental employment, grade level achievement, and parental attendance at school functions. Since the findings of a study of this nature are pertinent to society, further research needs to be done using a more heterogeneous sample and a more refined, limited instrument. The instrument should be further tested for reliability and validity.

Abstract:
Abstract Premarital sex among teenagers is a major issue in the United States today. Although this has been primarily due to concern over unwanted pregnancy, it has also taken on an increased importance since the spread of herpes, which is not curable, and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is fatal. Highly personal sexual attitudes and practices have come under increased public scrutiny in the past 5 or 6 years. Given the documented negative consequences for teens of bearing children too early, and the increased risk of contracting incurable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), it is of the utmost urgency to have up-to-date information on the sexual beliefs, values, and behavior of individuals, the trends in these behaviors, and their causes in order to better understand the population at risk.

The marketing of e-cigarettes to young people and the legalization of marijuana present challenges. The current substances available to students are detailed. Parent–student communication continues to be important for students leaving home and creating patterns of their own. Parents’ values and behavior are predictors of teens’ use of substances. There is an association between underage drinking and chronic marijuana use and depression. Teenagers who are sensation-seeking present a difficult challenge for parents. Also important are conversations about respect and safety in sexual relationships. Parental monitoring, limit-setting, and ongoing communication can help prevent risk-taking behaviors. The need for students to develop refusal skills and the importance of establishing house rules and consequences are described.

Abstract:
Once a young person experiences coitus, she or he acquires “risk status.” Unquestionably, young people who are not sexually active are not at risk of pregnancy, unless they are forced to have sex (which is not a rare event). However, once the decision is made to initiate sexual activity, risk of pregnancy is high for those who do not use contraception consistently. And since no contraception is 100 percent effective, an unplanned pregnancy may occur. Once pregnant, a young woman must decide whether to carry the pregnancy to term. She may decide to have an abortion, if that option is available to her. If a child is born, the mother may decide to give the child up for adoption. While this series of decisions seems relatively straightforward, there is little consensus in our society about how to intervene at any point along the way and prevent the negative consequences. Differing perceptions of the problem shape the range of solutions. One set of conflicts centers on the morality of premarital sex. Some people believe that the only response to the issue of adolescent pregnancy is to promote abstention. Others believe that premarital sexual activity has become a normative behavior and, therefore, interventions should focus on teaching responsible sexual behavior and providing access to contraception. A second set of conflicts is focused on the abortion issue. Once pregnant, should a girl be required to maintain the pregnancy and encouraged to put the baby up for adoption if she cannot care for it, or should she be assisted to obtain an abortion if that is what she wants? We can turn to many sources of data to gain insights into these questions. The problem of adolescent pregnancy has received a great deal of attention over the past decade and numerous studies have been produced from which we can learn about the antecedents, prevalence, and consequences of early sexual activity, contraceptive use, and pregnancy among teenagers.

Abstract:
The number of young people who have had sex at an early age increases in proportion, it concerns unsafe sexual behaviors, teenage pregnancy, HIV aids and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study examines the health behaviors and factors predicting sexual risk behaviors pertaining to teenage pregnancy among adolescents in Thailand. Adolescents consulted the reproductive health center about problems with the same gender. The factors of adolescent reproductive behaviors were significantly associated with age, education level, and the perception of peer norms. Receiving social support from media information also significantly correlated with those behaviors. The results recommend that to prevent premature pregnancy, adolescents should protect themselves. Parents should take the issue of social media use by their teenagers very seriously.

Abstract:
Social media is one of the variables affecting sexual behavior among teenagers in today’s society. This study was conducted in Tamale, Ghana, to examine adolescents’ application of social media to access and use reproductive health services. The study involved 342 adolescents randomly selected from multicultural and diverse backgrounds of students drawn from four Senior High Schools in the Tamale metropolis of the Northern Region. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires and interview guides. The quantitative data were analyzed using STATA 16.0, chi-square test of association, and binary logistic regression at a 5% significance level. The study found that 45.4% of adolescents accessed reproductive health (RH) information through social media. The study showed that there was a significant association between using a mobile phone to access RH information and romantic relationship (p < 0.001), awareness of reproductive health (p < 0.040), respondents’ place of residence (p < 0.040) and occupation of guardian (p < 0.040), mobile phone ownership (p < 0.004), social media use (p < 0.001), means of accessing RH using a mobile phone (p < 0.02) and whether their problem was solved (p < 0.001). The study concludes that, despite the high utilization of social media and awareness of reproductive health services, less than half (45.4%) of the adolescents use social media by adolescents to access adolescent reproductive health services in the Tamale metropolis.

Abstract:
The topic of violence and aggression is extremely relevant in modern society. It provokes the scientific reflection of scholars and practitioners in various fields (political scientists, psychologists, philosophers, cultural scientists, sociologists, philologists, theater experts) and it finds vivid reflection in modern drama. The purpose of this work is to study the author's interpretations of the causes and consequences of violence in the youth environment based on German-language dramatic works of the 2010s. The resolution of this research task determines the logic of presenting the material in this part of the collaborative monograph. We describe the socio-psychological basis of violence from the perspectives of social psychology, philosophy, sociology, political science, etc. The peculiarities of socio-psychological causes and consequences of youth aggression and violence conceptually substantiated by playwrights in artistic texts are investigated. The research methodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach and literary methods, including a holistic analysis of a literary work, descriptive, systemic-analytical, hermeneutic, receptive methods, the method of semantic interpretation, feminist, and multicultural approaches to the study of the text. The results of the researchshow that the problem of violence in German-language drama of the 2010s received an original author's artistic interpretation, based on a deep study of the socio-psychological foundations of such deviant behavior among young people. It is considered by modern playwrights in different aspects: the uncontrolled aggression of a teenage murderer in a school shooting situation, a robbery attack carried out by teenagers from disadvantaged families; the abuse and murder of a disabled young man by skinheads and neo-Nazis; violence against women based on national cultural differences and stereotypes in a multicultural environment; school bullying and cyberbullying; partner's sexual aggression and family violence. Modern playwrights look for the basis of antisocial behavior not only in society and in the family, but also in collective memory and national archetypes. Representatives of postmodernism and the dramaturgy of "new realism" explore the theme of violence in the genres of documentary (verbatim), psychological drama, turn to the traditions of experimental, "post-dramatic", "station" theaters, "theater in a classroom", combining in dramatic texts the realism of the image with bright conventionality. Practical implications. Materials and conclusions can be the basis of lecture courses and textbooks on the history of modern German-language literature, as well as can be used in psycho-corrective and psychological-prophylactic work with adolescents and young people. The value/originality of this work lies in the fact that it has a scientific novelty: in modern literary studies, until now, no attempt has been made to comprehensively and systematically (in an interdisciplinary context) analyze the problem of violence in German-language drama of the 2010s.

Abstract:
Background: Teenagers aged 15-19 encounter a disproportionate burden of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The urgent ongoing efforts are needed to lead healthy, safe, and productive lives of teenage girls. This scoping review aimed to identify the association of early menarche with negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selection; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The search included PubMed, EBSCO, and Wiley databases. The keywords were “effect” OR “outcomes” AND “menarche” OR “menstruation” OR “menstrua” OR “menses” OR “early menarche” AND “reproductive health” OR “sexual reproducti” AND “sexual behavior” OR “sexual debut” OR “sexual partners” OR “unsafe sex” OR “unprotected sex”. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 116 full text articles was obtained. After the review process, nine articles were eligible. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Four articles from developing countries (Nigeria, Malawi, Philippine) and five articles from developed countries (France, United States of America, England, Australia) met the inclusion criteria with cross-sectional and cohort design studies. The existing literature showed that early menarche was associated with sexual and reproductive health (early sexual initiation, low use of contraception), sexually transmitted diseases (genital herpes, HIV), and other factors (income, education level, sexual desire). Conclusion: Early age at menarche may contribute to the increase vulnerability of girls into negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Quality comprehensive sexual education may improve the sexual and reproductive health and well-being of adolescents. Abstract:
The Department of Health and Human Services began administering a Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) program through what is now the Office of Population Affairs in 2010 (DHHS, 2021). Via replication of approved, evidence-based programs, sexual education was administered to teens across the country with the goals of preventing teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (DHHS, 2021). One funded program delivered the TPP curriculum in community-based settings across southwestern Ohio for four years, using undergraduate nursing students as facilitators. The program served 1,642 females, ages 15-19. The objectives were to gather data on baseline knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, intentions, and perceptions related to sexual health in a target population and examine trends in knowledge at 12-months post-intervention. Identical surveys were distributed at baseline and 12 months post-intervention. Survey questions from the original instruments were assigned to one of nine categories for a more focused exploration of critical topics. Teens’ perceptions of risk did not align with the risky behaviors reported. Healthcare providers must work to find ways to address feelings of invincibility in teens before other educational efforts may be effective. Implications for Nursing: Ongoing evaluation of target populations is necessary to ensure effective programming. Abstract:
The National Programme for Addressing HIV/AIDS in the Czech Republic 2018- 2022 is a strategic document for combating the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections in the Czech Republic. The activities of the programme are funded by the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Health’s subsidy programmed called the National Programme on HIV AIDS. The target population groups of the programme are not only persons at high risk of HIV/AIDS infection due to risky sexual behaviour, but also adolescents, teenagers, and other persons of reproductive age with a lower level of health literacy. One possibility that could increase their level of knowledge is the short intervention method, which is also applicable in the field of prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. The aim and purpose of the brief intervention method recommended by the WHO is to increase the health literacy of the intervened persons, eliminate their risky behaviour and promote their reproductive health. Reducing the incidence of HIV-positive persons in the population brings significant financial savings in terms of reduced treatment costs for both HIV-positive patients and especially those with advanced AIDS. The application of the brief intervention method in the field of prevention of HIV/AIDS and other STIs was the essence of the 6-year project conducted by the University of Health Sciences in health care facilities across the Czech Republic. Patients were privately familiarised with the content of educational cards and were offered the opportunity for a closer consultation on the topic. After the education, the effectiveness of the intervention was evaluated by a short questionnaire. 5,146 people of reproductive age were intervened in more than 150 health care facilities across the country during the implementation of the 6-year project. A total of 1,347 patients (26%) reported that their loved ones were not adequately protected from HIV/AIDS and other STIs. Only 56% of the male and 66% of the female respondents reported that they had ever spoken to their loved ones about STI prevention. After the education, 56% of the 89 reproductive-age interveners requested copies of the education cards for their loved ones. Increased health literacy due to education was more often acknowledged by women than men, and especially by those in the 15-25 age group, where 74% of those in this age group who intervened confirmed increased health literacy. Women (75%) were more likely than men to believe that their loved ones were not adequately protecting themselves from STIs. Patients with lower levels of education were more likely to admit an increase in health literacy than those with university education (64%). 71% of patients with only primary education, completed at fifteen years old in the Czech Republic, said their health literacy had increased. 70% or patients who finished their schooling after secondary education, completed at eighteen years old in the Czech Republic, said their health literacy had increased. Over the course of 6 years, more than 5,000 people of reproductive age were educated in the project. The health care environment in which the interventions were implemented contributed significantly to the success of the brief intervention method. The realisation of the project by the College of Health contributed to the implementation of the National Programme for Addressing HIV/AIDS in the Czech Republic 2018-2022 and at the same time the National Action Plan, entitled Development of Health Literacy.

Youth talk about sexuality: A participatory assessment of adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Lusaka, Zambia. Population Council, 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1998.1023.

Full text
Abstract:
Thirty-six percent of Zambia’s 9 million inhabitants are between 10 and 19 years of age, and most adolescents are sexually active by their mid-teens. Pregnant teenagers have an elevated risk of maternal mortality and complications related to birth. In 1990, at Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital, self-induced abortion accounted for up to 30 percent of maternal mortality, and one-quarter of these deaths occurred in women under 18 years. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major health problem for adolescents, yet only a small proportion protect themselves from pregnancy and STIs. There are many barriers to improving the situation, including opposition by parents and teachers to the use of modern contraceptive methods. CARE Zambia is conducting a study to test community-based strategies that increase knowledge of, demand for, and use of barrier methods to reduce unprotected intercourse among out-of-school adolescents in peri-urban Lusaka. As noted in this report, adolescent behavior change will be measured as the prevalence of barrier method use, number of sexual partners, FP attitudes, and measures of self-esteem and responsibility among participants.
