Abstract Forskningen syftar till att studera läsvanor hos tonåringar. Frågor att svara på är: När och vad läser ungdomar i skolan? När och vad läser ungdomar utanför skolan? På vilket sätt kopplas skolans läsning med fritidsläsning? Vilka skillnader har iakttagits mellan pojkars och flickors läsning? Kvalitativa intervjuer har använts i denna studie för att samla in uppgifter från de undersökta eleverna, lärare och bibliotekarier. Deltagarna är 12 elever, hälften pojkar och hälften flickor, en lärare och en bibliotekarie från en skola belägen i en mellanstor svenskstad. De viktigaste resultaten från studien är: Tonåringar läser så ofta som möjligt både i skolan och under fritiden. De läser allt som intresserar dem från romaner till sms. Det finns ingen skillnad av skönlitteratur läste av pojkar eller flickor. Medan flickorna är allvarliga läsare och njuter läsning utanför klassen, pojkarna har lågt intresse att läsa för nöjes skull. Tonåringar idag kommer i kontakt med litteratur genom film, böcker, nätet och Ipad/telefon mobiler. Lärare och bibliotekarier hjälpa tonåringar att öva läsning för att väcka ett intresse för läsning

Child abuse began to emerge as a central topic depicted in Western children’s and teenage realist fiction from around the 1990s, peaking in prevalence around the turn of the century and into the early years of the twenty-first century. In this thesis I explore the formal expression of abuse and trauma in a corpus of twenty French texts published between 1992 and 2008 for young-adolescent readers aged between 10 and 16 years. The project begins with a Propp-inspired structural model of child-abuse plot features and characters, which identifies a set cast of protagonists across the corpus which serve a specific functional role in the narrative. I then focus on the three main narratological categories of voice, mood and time, using Genette’s Discours du récit as a framework for a close reading of the abuse texts, whilst also drawing upon various trauma theorists, to explore how choice of narrator, focalizing character and temporal perspectives are manipulated to express different aspects of and perspectives on abuse and the psychological impact of abuse in particular. The final chapter is an analysis of the means used by both protagonists within the texts, and the authors of the texts, to communicate and express abuse and trauma on a personal level, to other characters, and to readers. By drawing upon structural and narratological studies as well as trauma theory in my analysis, I show that form and content are inextricably linked across the corpus. Indeed, the protagonists’ traumatic memories and painful experiences are expressed both on a diegetic level via the characters, and also reflected in the formal and structural features of the texts.

Inspired heavily by the Virginia Woolf's novel, The Waves, Dirty Girls tells the story of four girls coming of age in coastal Texas. Told through interior monologues, Dirty Girls explores themes of adolescent girlhood from the various perspectives of those who live it. Carmel has always been on the outside looking in, envious of the prettier, thinner, blonde girls who seem to own everything and everyone. Christina protects her, attempting to straddle the line between sexual awakening and childhood innocence. Lauren grapples with her lesbian sexuality in a time and place where such an identity is forbidden. And Taylor suffers the consequences of her grown-too-fast flashy ways. All four girls overlap and change, though through their interiority the reader comes to realize no girl is spared the struggle of the patriarchy.

Scheherazade is the story of Felicity who is in pursuit of a dream to become a solo violinist. As she ploughs into Year 12, she is so absorbed by her goals that she neglects her social environment: family; friends; relaxation. Sometimes she is barely conscious of their presence. At the Year 12 formal, she is forced to realise the consequences of the choices she is making. Writing Scheherazade, my first novel, was a lesson in dealing with and learning about mastering the writing process. The exegesis shows the journey of taking pieces of unconsciously/subconsciously created writing and turning them into pieces ofa deliberately crafted complex whole. Starting with a premise -If you don't pursue your dreams, you will live with regret -I found it easy to put together a character and give her a dream. Bringing in aspects of adolescent theory, I could contrast her with her friends and her parents. But all of the conflict was external and Felicity was unlikable. When I investigated other Young Adult and Junior fiction I found that I needed to bring the conflict more inside Felicity. Then I had a story.

Bibliography: leaves 126-134.The Young Africa Awards Series (YAA) was commissioned as a competition challenging South African writers to produce novels for teenagers that were relevant to their lived reality in South African society today. All the novels examined in this dissertation can be defined as realism. In this study the text is examined as a written locus of meanings around which are constellated oral and written discourses that frame the text. I discuss the ideology operating through the competition's publishers and judges. I also examine the meaning produced through the YAA competition through an analysis of reader responses to different YAA novels.

This study describes a content analysis of six contemporary young adult fiction novels. Adolescence is a time of great change, particularly for girls. It is during this time that female adolescents develop their voice and identity. As literature reflects the reader’s world, it also affects in part how female adolescents perceive their identity. Latent content analysis was used to code eight variables to determine if select contemporary young adult fiction novels appropriately describe the development of identity among adolescent females. All of the novels included in the study provided sufficient evidence of accurate portrayal of female adolescent identity development, by having examples of at least four out of eight variables, with most having examples of seven out of eight variables.

Since the popular indie-film Juno came out in 2007, it has received massive attention including both praise and harsh critique. Some have celebrated the protagonist Juno’s strong personality and her initial sexual liberty, but the majority have questioned what they see as the film’s anti-abortion message. In contrast, the more recent work Trouble, a young adult (YA) fiction novel from 2014 by Non Pratt, has received very little attention from scholars despite treating the same sensitive subject of teenage pregnancy. Therefore, this essay involves a comparative analysis of the two texts, which examines how the protagonists experience their pregnancies by looking at aspects such as the pregnant body, sexuality, maturation, identity and existential questions. The essay also takes into consideration some of the critique that previously has been voiced regarding the messages that Juno and other YA fiction send. The aim is to contribute to the same discussion by analyzing the film from a slightly different angle and by introducing an analysis of Trouble. In accordance with previous research, the essay concludes that these two works reveal traditional values and perspectives on teenage pregnancy that limit the protagonists’ sexual agency and leave them feeling isolated and confused.

Adolescence is an incredibly complex period of life. During this time young people are searching for and wanting to create their own unique identity, however being confronted with a plethora of roles and directions is challenging and confusing. These challenges are reflected in the vast array of young adult literature being presented to young people today. As a result young adult literature has the potential to function as scaffolding to assist teenagers in the struggles of adolescence by serving as an important source of information about the world and the people in it. Teenage novels also give young people the opportunity to try on different identities and vicariously experience consequences of actions while developing their own distinctive personality and character.
As this study reveals, the Australian young adult novel has undergone considerable developments, with 1989 serving as a milestone year in which writers and publishers turned in new directions. In general, Australian young adult novels have changed from books set predominately in rural areas, incorporating major themes of child abuse, death, friendship and survival with introverted characters aged between twelve and sixteen in the early 1980s to novels with urban settings, a large increase in books about crime, dating, drugs and mental health and sexually active, extroverted characters aged between fourteen and eighteen in the late 1990s.
To chart the progression of these changes and gain an understanding of the messages young adults receive from adolescent novels an evaluative framework was developed. The framework consists of two main sections. The first part applies to the work as a whole,
obtaining data about the novel such as plot, style, setting, temporal context, use of humour,
issues within the text and ending, while the second part collects information about character demographics including gender, age, occupational status, family type, sexual orientation, relationships with family and authority figures, personality traits and outlook for character. To qualitatively and quantitatively assess the construction of youth in Australian young adult literature a random selection of 20 per cent of Australian young adult books published in each year from 1980 to 2000 were analysed using the evaluative framework, with 186 novels being studied altogether.
During the 1990s in particular, Australian young adult literature was heavily criticised for being too bleak, too dark, presenting a picture of life that was all gloom and doom. This research resoundingly dismisses this argument by showing that rather than being a negative influence on the lives of young people, Australian books for young people present a comprehensive portrayal of youth. They probe the entire gamut of teenage experiences, both the good and the bad, providing a wide range of scenarios, roles, relationships and characters for young people to explore. Therefore Australian young adult literature provides an important source of information and support for the psycho-social development of young people during the formative years of adolescence.
This research is significant because it gives hard evidence to support the promotion of a representative selection of Australian young adult novels both in the classroom and in home, school and public libraries. By establishing the available range of contemporary Australian young adult literature through this study, young adult readers, teachers and librarians can be confident in the knowledge that appropriate titles are accessible which meet the needs and interests of young people. Consequently, the substantial amount of data gathered from this
study will considerably add to the knowledge and understanding ofAustralian young adult novels to date and provide an excellent starting point for further research in the future.

The aim of this research, Reading Selection as Information Seeking Behavior: A Case Study with Adolescent Girls, was to explore how the experience of reading fiction affects adolescent girls aged 13 through 15, and how that experience changes based upon four activities: journaling, blogging, a personal interview, and a focus group session. Each participant reflects upon works of her own choosing that she had recently read. The data is evaluated using content analysis with the goal of developing a relational analysis tool to be used and tested with future research projects. The goal of this research is to use the insights of the field of bibliotherapy together with the insights of the adolescent girls to provide a higher, more robust model of successful information behavior. That is, relevance is a matter of impact on life rather than just a match of subject heading. This work provides a thick description of a set of real world relevancy judgments. This may serve to illuminate theories and practices for bringing each individual seeker together with appropriate documents. This research offers a new model for relevant information seeking behavior associated with selecting works of essential instructional fiction, as well as a new definition for terminology to describe the results of the therapeutic literary experience. The data from this study, as well as from previous research, suggest that literature (specifically young adult literature) brings the reader to a better understanding of herself and the world around her.

The subject of this dissertation is Swedish upper secondary pupils’ reception of novels read as part of their literature instruction. The main purpose is to study and compare the reading of female pupils with that of male pupils and to analyze to what extent attention is paid to their private reading experiences in the literary teaching. What strategies do the students use to interpret and discuss fiction? And what is the relationship between their private reading habits and the way fiction is studied at school? Consequently, the subject field of this qualitative study concerns not only teenagers’ private reading habits, but also gender related issues, school adjusted reading routines and didactic matters. Reading at school differs in many ways from the pupils’ private reading habits, but there are also differences regarding the students’ attitudes towards reading as such. There proved to be certain diversities between the reading habits of boys and girls. The boys read in general less than the girls, and many boys were interested in reading adventurous and exciting stories. The girls were more into reading realistic novels, and to them it was important that they could identify with the characters. Many pupils responded personally to their reading. Instead of reflecting on the meaning of a text and comparing it to other texts or phenomena of the surrounding world, their reception confined itself to categories like “boring” or “exciting”. Merely a few students included a more profound literary analysis in their responses. An important aim of literature instruction must be to broaden the pupils’ literary repertoires and to make them improve their reading skills. This study shows that to achieve these improvements the students must feel involved, which means that literature instruction must be adapted to the literary cultures of both boys and girls.

A pesquisa “Diálogos da diferença: alteridade e preconceito a partir da narrativa ficcional infantojuvenil” tem como objetivo compreender como se configura, nas relações de alteridade presentes em narrativas ficcionais infantojuvenis, o potencial educativo sobre a questão do preconceito, sendo o objeto de estudo a série de filmes Harry Potter. Parte-se das definições sobre aspectos do preconceito, tendo nas relações de alteridade um ponto focal. Busca-se discutir como a narrativa ficcional pode enunciar possibilidades de discussão sobre o preconceito, sob a perspectiva da hexis educativa proposta por Sodré (2013). Por fim, a abordagem teórica sustentará o estudo de caso que analisa falas específicas ao longo dos oito filmes da série Harry Potter, com base nos conceitos da sociolinguística interacional. Busca-se, portanto, mostrar como a pesquisa proposta responde à hipótese de que Harry Potter pode ser um caso que mostre como determinados elementos constitutivos da narrativa ficcional infantojuvenil podem ser vistos sob uma perspectiva educativa que propicie a reflexão sobre o tema do preconceito junto ao público
The research "Dialogues of difference: otherness and prejudice from fictional farrative for children and teenagers" aims to understandhow the educational potential on the question of prejudice is configured in the relations of otherness in fictional narratives of children and teenagers, being Harry Potter film series an object of study. It starts from aspects of prejudice, having the relations of otherness as a focal point. It aims to discuss if a fictional narrative can enunciate possibilities of discussion about the prejudice, from the perspective of educational hexis by Sodré (2013). Finally, a theoretical approach supports a study that analyzes specific speeches throughout the eight Harry Potter films based on the concepts of interactional sociolinguistics. Therefore, it aims to show how the research can proves the hypothesis that Harry Potter can be an example that shows how the constituent elements of the fiction narrative for children and teenagers can be seen from an educational perspective that provides a reflection on the theme of the prejudice close to the audience

You-Yu Zhang’s works focus on a variety of problems in the growth of teenagers and inspire teenagers. This thesis is based on You-Yu Zhang’s six novels as research designs. It discusses the teenagers’ problems in the texts; accordingly, it sets up the purpose of the study; it uses documentary analysis and content analysis to analyze the texts. It analyzes the influence of background on teenagers’ problems according to Erikson’s (Eric H. Erickson, 1902-1994) psychosocial developmental theory. The teenagers’ problems in You-Yu Zhang’s teen fiction involve the family factor, the teacher-student relationship and peer interactions. After analyzing the texts, the teenagers’ problems in You-Yu Zhang’s six texts include emotional distress, deviant behavior, sexual issues and identification; the conflicts present in these novels are divided into three aspects: people and self, people and people and people and the society; it also researches the six modes of resolution resulting from the different characters between the main characters in the novels. We can conclude that the teenagers who have problems result from the problematic environments, the problems of teenagers become more complex, teenagers acquire identification from the conflicts. It is hoped that analyzing the teenagers’ problems written by You-Yu Zhang’s helps teenagers think about correct directions in life and bringing in mature new perspectives.

Inspired by Mexican-American folktale, La Llorona, (the Weeping Woman), Malas is a work of fiction. The novel is set in the early 1990s, in Las Cienegas, a fictional town on the Texas-Mexico border. Nerdy high school freshman by day, wannabe rock singer by night, fourteen-year-old Lulu Muñoz is out to make her mark on the world in spite of her complicated father, Julio Muñoz.
When her father’s relationship with a married woman brings violence into Lulu’s life, and he reacts by shutting her out, Lulu decides to take matters into her own hands. She sets out to find the truth about her father while keeping him from discovering her own secret life. She’s the front-man for a high school punk band, Pink Vomit. She’s sneaking into night clubs across the Mexican border. Battling her father for her own autonomy, she breaks the family taboo and seeks out Pilar Aguirre, her estranged biological grandmother, and the woman who, local history says, tried to drown Julio at birth.

The book publishing industry experienced a period of drastic change
during the final decades of the twentieth century. Small publishing companies
consolidated and were purchased by large, profit-minded media conglomerates.
The widespread adoption of digital media technologies prompted many questions
about the very future of the book itself. Yet at the pinnacle of these changes, the
American young adult publishing market gradually began to experience not a
decline, but a renaissance. In this report, I explore ways that changes in book
publishing have manifested themselves in contemporary young adult literature
through two case studies. Are today’s young adult books works of literature or
commercial products? Is their increased popularity due to widening readership
or more savvy marketing? Are the companies producing them more concerned
with the public good or their own profit margins?text

This study examines the experiences of teachers and students in secondary English classes, as they engage in the reading of contemporary adolescent fiction, when such fiction is set as a class text. This study also includes an examination of students' perceptions of such reading, and of reading in general. The aim of the study is to add to the knowledge about what actually goes on inside English classrooms during the teaching of literature, and within that field, to specify how teacher-student interaction in the classroom defines and positions the kinds of meanings that are made of literary texts. Therefore, this study focuses on the teaching of units of work related to the reading of adolescent fiction novels by three South Australian English teachers, based in three different metropolitan schools.The central focus is on the teachers? plans for these units of work, and on the outcomes: that is, on teacher-student interactions during the time spent in class on the novel, and on students? written and oral responses. Thus this study also focuses on the learning that took place in these classrooms, as students made meaning from their reading.In the review of the literature, the role of the literary novel as the class ?set text? in its several historical contexts is examined, as well as current theories of reading, of pedagogy, and of literary criticism. Finally this study is placed in the context of other related studies and its contribution to the field explained.An interpretive approach is employed and methods of educational ethnography are used to what was visualised from the outset would be qualitative research in the form of case studies. Some quantification is used in this research to report on a small-scale survey, using a questionnaire to create a ?readers? profile of the cohort of student-informants as a whole. Metaphors were used to encapsulate the teachers? teaching styles, and their intentions and practices analysed to uncover the underlying theories on which these intentions and practices were based. Throughout, but especially in the final chapter, the related notions of ?enjoyment? and ?the teaching of reading? at secondary school levels, as well as the concept of reflectivity, are examined for their impact on reading pedagogy. The growing concern that teenagers don't read, led to this study.
The study is preceded by an explanation of aspects in which the teenager develops, the value
of reading and the influence of the environment on the teenager's utilisation of leisure time.
In the study, a total of 478 Afrikaans-speaking pupils from grade seven to grade ten completed
different questionnaires, whereby their reading interests and habits were determined.
Some of the important findings of the study are:
- although teenagers indicated their preference of fiction reading as that of horror and ghost
stories, the romantic Sweet Valley series is read the most;
- they prefer main characters who have the same religion and interests as they have;
- cartoons and the periodical, Huisgenoot, are popular with all age groups;
- books in Afrikaans are seemingly not popular;
- the title and blurb are "decisive in the choice of a book;
- teenagers consider it as normal that so little time is spent on reading;
A few recommendations are made at the end of the study.Die groeiende kommer dat tienderjariges nie lees nie, het tot die studie gelei. Die studie is voorafgegaan deur 'n uiteensetting van die aspekte waarvolgens tienderjariges ontwikkel; die waarde van lees en die invloed van die omgewing op tienderjariges se vryetydsbesteding. My mini-dissertation gives the autobiography of Talent Nyathi, who was born in rural Zimbabwe in 1961. Talent was unwillingly conscripted into the Zimbabwean Liberation Struggle. On her return to Zimbabwe, she has worked tirelessly for the education of her compatriots.
Talent's story casts light on subject-formation in conditions of difficulty, suffering and victimization. Doubly oppressed by her race and gender, Talent has nevertheless shown a remarkable capacity for self-empowerment and the empowerment of others.
Her story needs to be heard because it will inspire other women and other S/subjects and because it is a corrective to both the notions of a heroic Struggle and the `victim' stereotype of Africa.
Together with Talent's autobiography, my mini-dissertation offers extensive notes that situate her life story in the context of contemporary postcolonial, literary and gender theory and further draws out the significance of her individual `history-from-below'.English Studies
