Abstract:
The present study examined the root surfaces of teeth from children with or without periodontal diseases and with or without systemic diseases. Light microscopy revealed that when compared to control teeth: teeth with chronic periodontitis had similar radicular histology; teeth from children with leukocyte adhesion deficiency,Down syndrome and aggressive periodontitis had narrower cementum areas; teeth from children with hypophosphatasia showed cementum aplasia. Cementum anomalies may facilitate the establishment and progress of periodontitis in children.

There has been controversy about the length and structure of the odontoblast process within dentin since the earliest histologic studies of teeth. Our objective was to use the fluorescent carbocyanine dye Di-I combined with a new gelatin embedment procedure and confocal microscopy to determine the structure and extent of odontoblast processes in developing and mature rat teeth, injured rat molars, reparative dentin, and adult monkey teeth. We found that odontoblast processes do not extend into outer dentin or to the dentin-enamel junction except during early stages of development. Those in inn

ABSTRACTThe presence of a petaloid pattern (previously known as ‘dark dentine’) in cross sections of teeth of the embolomere Pholiderpeton attheyi has been used as a synapomorphy of the embolomeres or of the embolomeres plus the stem tetrapod, Crassigyrinus scoticus. Among the taxa studied, dentine that appears dark results from closely packed dentine tubules and can be found in any part of a tooth section in which such crowding occurs. The petaloid pattern is restricted to tooth sections of a particular diameter, and is obliterated in larger sections of teeth that show complex folding. Petalo

We used transmission immunoelectron microscopy and polyclonal antibodies to study the reactivities of Types III and VI collagen in dentin of normal human permanent and primary teeth and in primary teeth from five patients with dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) associated with osteogenesis imperfecta and occurring as a single trait. In the normal permanent tooth, reactivity of Type III collagen was occasional and, where present, peritubular. Staining of normal primary teeth was less occasional but still rare, whereas the abnormal dentin stained more uniformly. Atypical, non-striated fibrillar stru

The principal aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between trace elements in the tooth enamel of children from the Destitute Children’s Asylum (DCA), who died in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and their health, diet and environment, as determined from historical records and osteological stress markers. The secondary aim is to explore the validity of trace element analysis in archaeological populations in relation to paleodiet and health status.
