Abstract:
Background: In today’s digitalized society there are high demands from customers on how things should work. Companies face demands on how they should provide their customers with a attractive offerings and with today's fast growing technologies new ways of offering service are presented. AR-technology has recently started being used as a tool in companies’ aftermarket service within B2B and it allows for service technicians to, remotely provide aid, problem solve and repair of the machines with the assistance of an expert. Aftermarket service can, if performed correctly, give companies competitive advantages and is believed to be a large future profit maker. There is a hype surrounding AR-technology, new technologies are a driving force for new services and consumers are demanding fast service, but there are still studies missing regarding AR-technology in the aftermarket service on the B2C market.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes of the different operators within the supply chain, from three different dimensions, towards the introduction of AR- technology in companies’ aftermarket service towards consumers, and also to improve the understanding of its effect on the service process. Method: The study uses a qualitative method where we have performed an explorative case study on the introduction of AR-technology in companies’ aftermarket service. The empirical data have been gathered by 14 semi-structured interviews with respondents from three different operators within our studied supply chain. Result: The operators, within the supply chain, all agree that there are clear advantages with the introduction of AR-technology in the aftermarket service as knowledge transfer, facilitated by AR-technology, can promote self-service which can mean cost and time savings for both the company and the consumers. There are though questions regarding the actual use of the technology and if the technology in some cases may become redundant. There are also questions about how a shift of service closer to consumers may affect companies ́ stable revenue flow in the aftermarket service and also their customer relations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the companies at the forefront of sustainable development is WSP, which is one of the world's leading analysis and engineering consulting companies. They have a global innovation and sustainability program with the aim to see and analyze the future more clearly: Future Ready. The problem is that it is not always obvious for a technical consultant how to offer and increase the soft values towards the customer. The industry's companies are faced with the challenge of moving from a traditional domain expertise to be the one who also actively reduces the uncertainty that exists among customers, partners and employees in terms of sustainability issues. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to contribute to an increased understanding of the driving forces and obstacles to succeed with this type of change and implementation. This work rests on a conceptual model, of different theory areas, which is a potential development process for a technical consultant to move from traditional domain expertise to leading innovation. The theory is based upon Concurrent Engineering (CE), Design-driven Innovation (DI) and cultural movement. CE is a method that is based on a collaborative approach to expand the contextual ability regarding value offering, DI is based on how to increase the domain expertise value, which increases the innovative ability and the cultural movement is assumed to be parallel to these because this movement changes focus from only hard to even soft values. To carry out this work, a qualitative method and Mode 2 have mainly been applied. In addition, a literature study has been conducted and the collection of empirical material has been done through a process mapping and interview study. The analysis for the literature study was carried out iteratively and the interview study was based on an analysis model which the author herself produced, based on several keywords and themes. The biggest driving force for implementing work with Lead in innovation is time. Time is the common denominator regarding the current problem areas and seen as an interlinkage between the three areas within this project. The biggest obstacle to implementing CE is the specific way of working that "locks in" the employees to specific project days. DI requires every employee to think innovative, which can be hard to achieve. Due to the fact that the culture is hidden, it is hard to grasp which indeed makes it hard to overcome. Although this work requires continued studies to be feasible, it highlights many new interesting perspectives and proposals for a possible development process. Thus, this work should be regarded as a contribution to an incentive to start a journey for both WSP and other companies or organizations to move from traditional domain expertise to Lead in innovation.

Bäckström, Kristoffer. "The Role of Public Policies for Energy Technology Development : Their Innovation Effects and Interaction." Licentiate thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, Samhällsvetenskap, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-26731.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis is to analyze the role of public policies for technological development (i.e., innovation) in the renewable energy sector. The thesis consists of an introductory part and three self-contained papers. Paper I investigates the innovation effects of renewable energy support policies and their interaction in the empirical context of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. This is achieved by using data on solar PV patent counts and policies targeting solar PV development across 13 countries over the time period 1978-2008. These policies include public R&D support to solar PV as well as two different types of production support schemes: feed-in tariffs (FIT) and renewable energy certificates (REC). The data are applied to a negative binomial model and the results indicate that: (a) both FIT and REC schemes stimulate solar PV patenting activity although the impact of the former is of a larger magnitude; (b) public R&D has been more influential than the production support schemes in inducing solar PV innovation; and (c) policy interaction exists in that the innovation effect of public R&D support is greater at the margin if it is accompanied by the use of FIT schemes for solar PV. Paper II analyzes the role of pilot and demonstration plants (PDPs) in technological development. As surprisingly little explicit attention has been devoted to this issue in prior research, the existing literature is synthesized and categorized, and an agenda is proposed for future work. Scholarly work on PDPs can be found across several research fields and the discussion in the paper is organized around three research streams: engineering and natural science research, technology and innovation management, and innovation systems. Based on searches in key bibliographic databases more than 200 publications were identified and reviewed. According to the literature synthesis, the plants bridge basic knowledge generation and technological breakthroughs on the one hand (promoted by public R&D support), and exploitation of new technology for commercial use on the other (promoted by production support schemes). Still, more research on the subject is needed. For instance, the role of PDPs for inducing innovation needs to be assessed in a rigorous empirical setting as this issue has only been researched in conceptual studies or retrospective case studies based entirely on qualitative or descriptive approaches. Paper III provides an econometric analysis of the innovation impacts of publicly funded PDP activities in the case of advanced biofuel technology. This is achieved by using data on biofuel patent counts and PDPs across eight European countries over the time period 1980-2011. It is acknowledged that PDPs have two main objectives: testing and optimization of technology (experimental PDPs), and diffusion and commercialization of technology (exemplary PDPs). The data are applied to a negative binomial model and indicate that: (a) PDP activities are overall positively correlated with biofuel patents; (b) experimental PDPs are more innovation-promoting than exemplary PDPs; and (c) experimental PDP activities encourage innovation also indirectly through knowledge spillovers. The overall conclusion is that environmental policy encourages renewable energy innovation. Public R&D support as well as production support schemes are important for inducing innovation, and there are interactions between these policy types which must be acknowledged when designing public support. As public R&D support is more innovation-promoting when accompanied by the use of certain production support schemes, these policies should be employed simultaneously. Moreover, publicly funded PDP activities foster innovation and thus, their role must also be acknowledged when designing public policy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
No matter how big a company is or what market segment it serves it still needs administration and supervision. An ERP system is a system that has the sole purpose to help a company with these activities and is often considered the backbone that intertwines the key business-processes in an organization. More specifically an ERP system can help a company to manage everything from product planning, purchasing, and inventory control to interaction with suppliers and customer service. Implementing a competitive ERP system into an organization can however become very capital intense, and small and medium enterprises do not often have the financial strength to handle this investment. An important step in the evolution of ERP is therefore cloud based ERP systems which are considered an enabler for many advantages for small and medium enterprises. The purpose of this master thesis is to establish which factors that affect the decision of small and medium enterprises to move their ERP system to the cloud or to implement a brand new cloud solution. Further, these factors have been evaluated and investigated from a strategic perspective in order to provide managerial recommendations for vendor companies. The main research questions for this master thesis are therefor: • What factors affect the client’s adoption decision of cloud based ERP systems technology? • How can the vendors cope with these factors? In order to collect empirical data, a set of interviews have been conducted with vendors which is targeting the small and medium enterprise segment; and customers to these vendors which have adopted a cloud based ERP system. These companies are the system vendors Implema AB, Alterview, and Unit4Agresso and the adopters Handheld, Naty, Grays American Stores, and Södertörns Högskola. The resulting data from this have been analyzed with the help from a theoretical framework which consists of theories from technological change (Types of technological change); Technological change as a social process (Technology diffusion; Technology adoption); Technology system evolution (Salient and Reverse Salient). The results of the empirical research show that risk, function, cost and flexibility are strong contributing factors for the adoption of cloud based ERP systems.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines technology adoption within the real estate development industry, an industry that has historically lagged the adoption rate of innovations compared to industrial counterparts. The study finds that the favorable market conditions for real estate as an asset class following the debt crisis in 2008 may have been a significant denominator in slowing down the technology adoption within the industry when several industries at the same time have faced fundamental industrial disruption. The absence of vertical integration within the industry decreases the transparency and complicates the emergence of innovative solutions as technology developers continuously fail to identify what features and functionalities that are desired by industry practitioners. The study finds that the higher the observability of the innovation, the higher is the probability of technology adoption within an organization. In addition, organizations are heavily dependent on having the facilitating conditions in-place internally to enable an effective technology adoption and implementation.

Abstract:
First-class software engineering is no longer enough for an information system product to gain success on a market. Developing successful information system products has become a challenging practice that requires an understanding of those who are going to use the products. As product innovation has become the lifeblood of companies competing in the fast- paced IT industry, the end users have ultimately become those who determine the success of these type of products. User research is conducted to gather insights of users’ contexts, behaviors and feelings when using products. It can be practiced to explore how to create products and features that end users will find useful. This thesis examines how methods and tools used in user research can expose opportunities for innovation. The study was conducted by a literature study and a case study, where user research methods were put to practice to discover opportunities for creating a concept for a new product. Emphasis was also put on studying how to provide utility when developing a new product. The case study was performed over a four month period at an e- commerce company called Swiss Clinic in Stockholm, Sweden. The study shows that opportunities for innovation in user research occur in the interplay between business, user research discoveries and iterative design and that effective communication and artifacts play essential parts for innovating successfully.

Eriksson, Lisa. "Technological Innovation System of Distribution System for Hydrogen applied to Heavy-duty Vehicles : Enabling factors for the development of a distribution system for hydrogen in Sweden." Thesis, KTH, Industriell ekonomi och organisation (Inst.), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-296585.

Full text
Abstract:
Factors that could enable the development of a distribution system for hydrogen applied to heavy-duty vehicles in Sweden are studied in this thesis. Fuel cell and hydrogen technology could be a solution in an electrification mix to reduce the environmental impacts of heavy-duty vehicles (Neef, 2009). However, the distribution system for hydrogen in Sweden is limited, with only five hydrogen refueling stations geographically dispersed (Vätgas Sverige, n.d.). In addition, distribution options at the lowest-cost delivery mode are highly dependent on the hydrogen application, density of demand, quantity to be transported, and distance between the delivery point and the production (Bersani, et al., 2018) To determine what factors could be decisive to develop a distribution system, the technological innovation system framework has been applied in this study. The analysis is carried out with the framework’s system functions. Further, the analysis is based on literature on hydrogen that considers hindering factors and barriers, policy recommendations, lock-in effects, distribution and transportation, and centralized vs. de-centralized systems. Moreover, data has been collected through 11 semi-structured interviews with actors from different sectors, energy companies, truck manufacturers, and researchers, amongst others. The analysis concludes that cross-sectoral collaboration, pilot testing, and governmental support can be enabling factors for the development of a distribution system in Sweden.

Abstract:
Head-up display (HUD) has a proven track record in the aviation and automobile sectors, allowing pilots and drivers to access information without diverting attention from the outside world. Similar benefits may be realized by the installation of HUD in locomotive cabs. The objective of this thesis work is to develop the user interface for HUD based on the ERTMS system. The HUD will be an added safety feature to the trains to prevent drivers from refocusing between the instrument panel and the outside view thus leading to reduced driver fatigue and better observation of the tracks ahead. Scenario Based Design method has been used to implement the project work with discussions regarding its advantages and limitations. The use of scenarios has allowed the design team to understand the scenarios that the drivers face in depth and has aided during the workshops to understand the drivers’ routine better. Additionally, recommendations for the hardware, installation and future work have been provided to support further implementation of the project.

Abstract:
Transportations role in society is increasingly important and today it has a prominent role in business, citizens lives as well as in the world economy. The increasing globalization and urbanization puts significant pressure on the existing transport system, with increasing demand for high-speed travel. However, this comes with implications on the environment, and the environmental concerns constitutes one of the biggest pressures in transport. And as the contemporary modes are bound by their technologies, enabling marginal rather than radical improvements, a possible window of opportunity for new radical technologies to enter the market can emerge. One new technology emerging within transportation today is called hyperloop, a technology that could prove to meet demand for faster, cheaper, safer and more environmentally efficient transportation. However, the technology is still in an early stage of development and hence surrounded by major uncertainties. Further, the nature of the technology necessitates overcoming several obstacles before it can reach commercial practice. And this together with a limited knowledge of the concept in Sweden makes it difficult to predict if hyperloop can become a viable transport alternative on the Swedish market. Which condensed lays the foundation to the purpose of this paper: "To give an overarching understanding of the Swedish transport market dynamics, together with a comprehensive evaluation of the hyperloop concept. And hence contribute to more inclusive knowledge and understanding of hyperloop’s viability in the Swedish context." Since the phenomenon has not been comprehensively studied previously, the elected research design is that of an exploratory case study, with an inductive, qualitative approach. To address the purpose, a literary review of the theoretical field was conducted. Looking in to previous research on disruptive innovation, diffusion of innovations, technical transitions, transformational pressure as well as window of opportunity. The empirical material gathered during the research process was derived from two main channels. Firstly, an extensive review of scientific articles about the hyperloop technology was conducted, providing insights on the technology and its surroundings. This was complemented by qualitative interviews to obtain material on the dynamics of the Swedish transport market as well as for understanding hyperloop in the Swedish context. The empirical study was further accompanied by a review of news articles and websites to map the most recent progress in the hyperloop development. By analyzing the empirical material through three frameworks; Characteristics of Diffusion, the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) and Technology Readiness Level (TRL), interesting findings and conclusions were drawn. These together points towards that hyperloop, if the technology reaches its predicted performance, will have significant relative advantages and observable effects in the relation to the contemporary modes of transportation. Further, a noticeable window of opportunity, sprung from capacity shortages and pressure towards environmental sustainability, seems to exist on the Swedish market. A window which could be capitalized upon and justify hyperloop in the Swedish context. The current state of the technology does however come with implications as it so far is insufficient to decrease uncertainty amongst the potential adopters. Factors that likely will prolong the adoption of the technology in Sweden relates to the relative complexity of the system, its limited compatibility with existing practices and the low maturity of the technology. Hence, the hyperloop companies must prove the concept feasible and increase the maturity to gain sufficient acceptance and recognition. This paper contributes to the academic community by assessing the compatibility of hyperloop on the Swedish market, as well as if hyperloop could become a viable alternative transport solution in Sweden. It provides insight to specific perspectives of the Swedish market, its requirements and the demand for alternative transport solutions. Hence, this paper is considered to make both an analytical contribution in terms of evaluating the viability of disruptive technologies. And an empirical contribution by shedding light on new important insights for the potential diffusion of hyperloop. Insights that are significant for hyperloop actors as well as for dominant actors on the Swedish transport market.

Abstract:
The transformative capabilities of technologies have great potential contributing to change that benefits society, the environment and human well-being. The world faces many grand challenges today, such as climate change and extensive digital change. Investors affect which technologies shaping our societies and organizations that are mission-driven, rather than entirely profit-driven, can affect the paradigm shifts that are to come. Despite an increased interest in the field of “transformative technologies”, there is a lack of consensus on basic characteristics and what the term entails. The lack of defining characteristics results in a risk of the term being diluted, which further has negative effects linked to decision-makers’ lack of approaches to evaluate transformative abilities in technologies. Decision-makers can be helped by a more defined concept, and through applicable methods, decision-makers can be helped to achieve their goals. Existing methods for evaluation of so-called “responsible investments” such as ESG and Impact investing are not focused on transformative capabilities of technologies. Furthermore, some limitations make them less applicable in cases where transformative technologies are relevant. The study contributes to an increased understanding of the concept and provides methods for evaluation by analyzing transformative capacities in Industrifonden's portfolio companies in the field of transformative technology. The empirical basis consists of 12 portfolio companies. The study highlights three dimensions of characteristics for transformative technologies, value changes, mimicry and diffusion, and contributes to an understanding of their meaning. Furthermore, the study shows recurring patterns in terms of transformative characteristics. In addition to the contribution linked to an increased understanding in the area, the study provides suggestions on how these technologies can be evaluated and how evaluation methods can be applied to investment strategies.

Abstract:

A global mapping of early stage medical technology companies has been implemented. The companies have emerging products within neurology and have undergone an evaluation by clinicians concerning the ability to provide clinical value for Swedish health care. The evaluation process has been executed by discussion with neurologists and neurosurgeons in combination with a literature survey. To limit the evaluation process, areas of stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy were chosen.

Some companies turn up to develop more requested products than others. Medfield Diagnostics AB, with their microwave screening product could in the future address the need for fast, accurate and accessible diagnosis of stroke and head trauma. The NBS system from Nexstim Ltd. has potential to provide clinical value by the ability of the products TMS technology to navigate in the brain. Elminda Ltd. product built of an evidence based rehabilitation platform could enhance recovery of patients with neurological disorders on an individual basis. BrainsGate Ltd. product to deliver drugs over the blood brain barrier provides totally new treatment options and NeuroSonix Ltd. ultrasound based product could assist the surgeon and decrease damageable embolic debris. Neurolife non-invasive solutions innovative device, which non-invasively measured the intracranial pressure, would be a totally new way to monitor patients.

A symposium was organized and three top ranked companies with stroke care products were invited to present their technology for Swedish clinicians in Stockholm. Participating companies were Nexstim Ltd., Elminda Ltd. and Medfield Diagnostics AB, who were all well received and considered to have interesting technologies with ability to provide clinical value.

Abstract:
Manufacturing companies have traditionally focused their design and development activities on realizing technical and engineered aspects of physical artifacts based on performance requirements. The ever-changing business climate, with its increased pace during the past decades, has forced industries to continuously innovate their approach toward the development of new products. Pressured also by global competition, manufacturing companies need to reconsider the traditional concept of realizing value via goods production, and shift towards realizing value through product-service combinations. Companies have begun to recognize that gaining competitive advantage and expanding market shares is not achievable purely through continuous technical improvements. Rather, it is necessary to develop a closer relationship to the customer to gain a deeper understanding of expectations, needs, and perceived value. From a development perspective, the overarching problem within complex systems such as those in which cars, aircraft, and excavators are manufactured, or healthcare is provided, is that the focus on customer value is likely to become blurred since it is difficult to understand the impact a change in any single component in the overall system has on value, and to determine a new function’s impact on future scenarios. The main goals of this thesis are to provide an understanding of key challenges when considering the value different design alternatives provide in the conceptual phases of product development taking the automotive industry as case study, and to explore how to support a multi-disciplinary design team in making value-conscious decisions when dealing with new product-service offerings. The research approach has involved data collection through participation in, and facilitation of, product-service design workshops in the automotive industry. Also, it has involved follow-up meetings and interviews, as well as a review of literature on state-of-the-art methods in early conceptual design phases, which describes the advantages and disadvantages of the different frameworks. The primary finding of the study is that determination of the impact of different PSS design options on customer value becomes more challenging since new elements are introduced (e.g., new business models and services). The design team requires more holistic competences in order to more fully understand changing contexts; and new methods and tools are needed in order to establish a base to define, discuss and assess what “uncontested customer value” is, and link it to the different product-service elements of the system. Secondly, this thesis proposes a conceptual approach for value simulation and assessment of different design options, where the iterative use of personas and scenario generation is combined with value modeling and computer-based simulation techniques, enabling a quick “what-if” analysis of the various options, facilitating the identification of promising combinations of product and service elements that provide higher customer value.

Abstract:
The transformation of the Swedish Armed Forces is bringing about major changes in many areas. Indirect fire is one capability affected by these changes. Financial savings, a shrinking organization and higher eligibility requirements mean that fewer soldiers will gain access to exclusive high-tech support resources such as the JAS 39 Gripen aircraft and the ARCHER artillery system. This thesis aims to examine whether access to indirect fire capability can be increased through the use of civilian products and communication networks. Technology development in the civilian mobile communications area is exponential and nations such as the USA, facing challenges similar to those of the Swedish Armed Forces, devote substantial resources to research and development. Is the use of mobile phones for military purposes the innovation needed by the Swedish Armed Forces, do the necessary technical conditions exist and is the technology applicable during peace and wartime operations? The results indicate that the military use of commercial technology is too low at the moment, but that the technology itself sets no limits, and that there is a need and a demand to develop military mobile apps. The robustness of commercial networks does not meet Armed Forces’ requirements and the Armed Forces need a clear strategy that states the aims and objectives before procurement and implementation is possible. The results show further that, regardless of the challenges identified, there are good reasons to continue to pursue these issues in order to build up experience and knowledge in this area of technology. The development of civil mobile phone technology for military purposes will mean that there is an economically viable resource to use in the future.

Mattsson, Adam, and Martin Åhlén. "Vibraesthetics of Music : The design of BEATHOVEN: a haptic device for enjoying music through vibrotactile sensations."

Full text
Abstract:
The project has the purpose of designing and developing a wearable haptic device for experiencing music through tactile vibrations on the body, and the result is the product concept BEATHOVEN and a completely new way of experiencing music.  Music is powerful, it touches our soul and gives form to our emotions. It captures the inner landscape of our minds, resonating in endless colours and nuances and shares it with others. Music has been a part of the human species for over 40 000 years and has played a fundamental role in our evolution and society; it is believed that we sang before we even spoke. Music, along with its aesthetic qualities, has throughout history been closely tied to our auditory perception. It was originally created and designed for listeners and has long been considered as something for the hearing. That perspective is starting to get more and more blurred out, however, and music is stepping out of auditory exclusivity. The general view of music today excludes over five percent of the world's population: people with disabling hearing loss. Hearing loss can impact a person’s life in many ways and one major impact is their ability to communicate with others. Music is another form of communication, and it is one where all of these people have thus far been excluded. The goal of this project is to design and develop a product that includes more people in music.  The project is carried out in collaboration with Pariception, a company specialized in research and development of assistive devices for people with deafblindness, and stems from one of their existing products: Good Vibrations. Good Vibrations is a wearable device for experiencing music through vibrations; it is a completely unique product and differs from all other solutions on the market. There are some brands, such as SubPac and Woojer, who have developed tactile music accessories, but these products are focused on enhancing a listening experience. Good Vibrations and BEATHOVEN are unique because they aim to convey the full musical experience and to be used independently from hearing. The current project brings Good Vibrations back to its basic concept idea, to redefine, refine, and design it into a usable, viable, and desirable consumer product: BEATHOVEN.   The project is made up of three main parts; to understand how the vibrotactile experience of music can be designed into a meaningful product, to understand how music can be conveyed through vibrotactile sensations on the body, and to know where on the body the vibrations should be conveyed to optimize the experience. To do this, we have created our own approach, adopting a mix of different design approaches such as design-driven innovation, human-centered design, embodied design, and aesthetic exploration. Research strongly indicates that it is possible to perceive aesthetic qualities within music through other senses than hearing, for example through stimuli such as tactile vibrations. To aid us in the development of the product, and to explore the aesthetic qualities of vibrations, we have defined a new research subject called Vibraesthetics.  The project has resulted in BEATHOVEN, a product concept featuring five vibrotactile actuators distributed to the chest and the neck. The product takes the input from any song or piece of music and transposes its frequencies to fit within 5-1000 Hz, which is the general range of human tactile perception. The music is further divided into three registers and distributed to separate and dedicated actuators. Some of the artist's original intentions with the music may be altered, but the richness of the experience is still there and available to anyone, regardless of their hearing abilities.

Full text
Abstract:
In the increasingly competitive market, innovation has become important if not crucial for entrepreneurial survival. The construction industry, although argued to be a bit behind, is catching on. As the ambition to become more innovative rapidly increase, several challenges must be managed within the building sector and one of them is the implementation of innovations. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the implementation process of innovation in a construction organisation’s projects. More specifically, to increase the understanding of the important aspects, which could result in a more effective implementation in the future. This will be done in collaboration with a large contractor firm in Sweden, NCC and with the help of an implementation framework developed by Sarah E. Slaughter. The framework will be used to see how well theory reflects practice and is especially directed towards the construction industry. It describes how innovations in general should be implemented, regardless of its type. The thesis is built around a case study and where a particular project within NCC has been chosen to study more closely. The project, which is addressed as the “Pilot Project” is a collaboration between NCC and an external supplier. In this collaboration they have worked together to implement an innovation, however, the process will be looked through the contractor’s eyes. The empirics has been collected through a qualitative interview study including individuals in different positions in the pilot project but also complemented with interviews with other individuals in the firm that have in some way been involved in an implementation of an innovation. Through the empirics, a number of significant aspects could be identified in the following categories: “Commitment”, “Communication”, “Organizing teams and Creating good Conditions” and last “Evaluation”. The result was that the majority of the most important factors were in line with the framework’s stages but that it should be complemented or modified with several aspects found in the empirics. It can therefore be concluded that the model, to a large extent, reflects reality in a good sense.

Abstract:
This research project was begun during the financial crisis of 2009 with the objective of increasing the competiveness of SMEs’ (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) by developing their innovation-management capabilities. The research presented in this licentiate thesis (thesis) is a part of the project in which newly-formed innovation groups at two SMEs in Eskilstuna, Sweden have been studied before they began innovation work. Prior research has indicated a need to observe processes within on-going innovation projects. My overall hypothesis that reaches beyond this thesis, is that an innovation group that improves its innovation-related knowledge, reduces knowledge gaps and increases innovation-related awareness, generates positive additional values such as motivation or enthusiasm above the results such as patents or project costs that are traditional measurements within innovation projects. The first study in the iterative research process focused on the innovation-related knowledge of newly-formed innovation groups. The results led to further immersed studies, in total five case studies, in which 21 respondents participated. A theoretical framework consisting of theories from Knowledge management and System theory was used to analyze the results and the research question of this licentiate thesis emerged as: “What would a model that describes a newly-formed innovation group’s innovation-related knowledge, knowledge gaps, information flow and awareness look like?” Four sub-questions, one per each aspect of the research question, have been used to analyze prior research, theories and the conducted case studies. A model, Innovation Group Model (IGM), was created according to the research question and goal for this thesis. A one-sentence-explanation could be: “The organization, the innovation group and the individuals must have the opportunity to be motivated to learn innovation management in theory and practice to achieve innovation-readiness and awareness to detect and utilize innovation-related information available within the internal and external information flow.” This thesis contributes to the research area of Innovation and design with knowledge concerning newly-formed innovation groups. Three practical applications of the research results are suggested; (1) IGM can be used in organizations to understand the complex situation when an innovation group is created. (2) IGM can be used when planning for physical or virtual environments in which an innovation group consisting of professionals and customers is intended to develop or generate ideas. (3) IGM can be used when developing innovation-related audits intended to provide a deeper understanding of a respondent’s knowledge. On the basis of the results from this licentiate thesis, I suggest further research according to the overall hypothesis. With IGM as a starting point, one could study the progress of innovation groups and where necessary, provide support in specific areas.

Abstract:
During the last two decades, innovations that contribute to sustainable development has received increasing attention in the markets and academia. The diffusion of sustainable innovations is a key element in society’s transformation toward a greener and more sustainable economy. Within industries that utilize industrial gases in their operations, there are thousands of fugitive emission sources that puts strain on the safety of the plant and the personnel. As most gases are combustible and hazardous to humans and the environment, these companies must have effective leak detection and repair (LDAR) programs. In recent years, a new gas detection technology called Optical Gas Imaging have emerged which can identify gas compounds safer and more efficient compared to older leak detection technologies. However, the rate of diffusion of the innovation has been slow and limited to oil and gas industries, even though many other industries such as steel, paper and pulp and chemical industries utilize gases as well. As such, this research has aimed to identify factors that influence the adoption of sustainable innovations within gas-utilizing industries. The qualitative data was gathered through semi structured interviews with gas-utilizing companies in Sweden and analyzed with interpretive methods. The results show that regulatory factors are a strong driver for the diffusion of sustainable innovations while characteristics of price, availability and type of innovationdecision works as barriers. The generated knowledge may contribute on how innovators of a sustainable innovations can overcome these barriers and improve the rate of adoption of sustainable innovations.

Abstract:
Today firms must maintain high levels of efficiency, quality control, customer responsiveness and speed, but even the full set of these attributes is not sufficient for sustainable competitive advantage. A further challenging requirement is to innovate successfully, not only in product development but also in production. Traditionally, innovation is regarded as successful product development, and delivering innovative products of sufficient quality at a reasonable price is seen as the primary means of acquiring and maintaining competitiveness. In this context, the role of production development is simply to provide production solutions required for the realization of new products. However, production development (sometimes called ‘production improvement’ or ‘process innovation in production’) may also involve continuous incremental or radical improvement of current production processes or systems in terms of productivity, cost, speed, quality, and/or flexibility. Previous research provides a rather narrow view of production development, largely ignoring value creation, which obscures its importance for organizations. Due to the lack of attention to innovativeness in production development, limited effort is also made to understand how to manage production development projects as innovation processes, where the emphasis is on obtaining value. This retards progress and restrains organizations’ competitiveness, and to some extent the potential social benefits (such as increases in sustainability) of new production technologies. Thus, the primary objective of the research this thesis is based upon was to increase understanding of distinguishing features and valuable outcomes of production innovation, together with challenges in managing production innovation processes. Data underlying this research were collected through case studies of development projects in firms operating in several industries. The research findings show that the pursued outcomes of production innovation are mainly cost reductions and increases in quality. Nevertheless, production innovation also contributes with expansion of product design space, and strengthening innovation capabilities, which in themselves provide sustainable competitive advantage. Further, production innovation is highly dependent on successful implementation – a complex endeavour involving internal organization, external customers and other actors contributing to the production system. Organizations lack support for capturing, prioritization, decision making and resource allocation in production innovation processes, a topic that warrants further research.

Abstract:
“There is no need to reinvent the wheel” – a cliché, often told when you want to come up with something new that in someway can be connected to something that already exist. This study shows the opposite – that inventions emanate from what is given. It can be a detail, a problem in a thing - a wheel - or a situation that catches the inventor’s attention. It is something that seeks a solution or something that generates an idea, a hint or a clue of something new and useful. The art of invention emerges from the ability and skill to broaden the seeing and put thinking, substance and tradition into motion. An old radio dial generates a new ergonomic steering wheel. The connection of memories between a chestnut, a cello and an early morning at a water pump creates three works of art. The epistemology of this study is based on a dialogue between voices from different times and traditions. Some voices are normative examples, drawn from a dialogue between Swedish inventors. The others are those of philosophers from the Age of Enlightenment, fetched from their original writings. Through that dialogue, perspectives and ideas of inventors and classical philosophers meet and are compared. A deeper understanding thus emerges that shows the essence of invention and in fact the essence of all creative work: i) Freedom – in thought and in action ii) Dialogue - to test and try new ideas and things in the ever changing circumstances. iii) Doubt - not taking established fact and assumptions for granted iv) Action – testing and breaking established praxis and rules. The study also illustrates the need for an alternative scientific form and expression concerning studies in the fields of invention, innovation and other practical work. Invention can not be captured or shaped by exact measurements, concepts, definitions or abstract models. It takes place in the borderland between fact and fiction, where technique, aesthetics and philosophy are one working entity. The strive for knowledge is endless and without limits and it is nurtured by wondering, searching and ambiguity. With inspiration from the dialogue seminar method used within KTH Advanced Programme in Reflective Practice – this study point out the actuality and vitality in using the classical philosophical writings, dialogue and analogical thinking as a scientific method within higher education.

Abstract:
This has been a project with the aim to develop a product which will solve what I consider to be the biggest difficulty and problem in the sport of wave surfing. That is to get enough speed to be able to stand up on the board and surf without the wave passing you. Today this is done only by paddling with your arms and this project has developed a product that helps the surfer to generate enough speed. This it makes wave surfing easier, especially for beginners and people with less physical ability. Another benefit with the product is that it enhances safety due to the possibility to start surfing further from the shore where stones and swimmers can be present. At the moment of standing up and starting to surf the risk of falling and possibly colliding with obstacles is the highest. A functional prototype has been developed that does this in an effective way, both economically and function wise. A general plan for development and introduction to the market has been developed.

Abstract:
This thesis amends some existing theoretical gaps and an overall lack of empirical studies regarding the ways R&D managers can use Open Innovation during the management of the radical innovation processes’ early development phase.Using existing theories, an interview guide and an analytical model was created. These were later used during the gathering and analysis of empirical data. Our sampling involves three of Sweden’s largest companies, representing three distinct industry fields. Interviews took place during April 2010, and all the interviewees were R&D managers with previous experience with Open Innovation and radical innovation. The results reveal that the managers do use Open Innovation when managing radical innovation, and point to both benefits and issues brought about by using Open Innovation during this process. The use of Open Innovation during the management of radical innovation can be divided into two main aspects; the actual extent to which it is used, and the ways the managers use it. Our results reveal that the extent varies from an early peak, an in between Open Innovation chasm and a final increase. Furthermore, our studies also show that the main ways the managers use OI are; exploitation and creation of revenue streams, knowledge leveraging and integration, and finally to create superior products using broad knowledge networks.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this master thesis is to enhance knowledge about how business model innovationcan be managed in a structured way within large companies. Method – We used a single case study design with an abductive research approach were the main data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews and a focus group, with a total of 29 informants. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis. Findings – The findings show that the developed business model innovation process for large companies differ from previously presented theories. Integrating our empirical investigation with prior literature, the business model innovation process that we recommend consists off our overall phases: (1) clarification, (2) team mobilisation, (3) development and (4) implementation. Theoretical contribution – The findings extend prior literature by suggesting that: (1) The responsibility for business model innovation should be shared between top managers and operational managers; (2) The current business model innovation process should be extended by adding a completely new phase, namely Clarification; (3) Several of the tasks within the original business model innovation process should be split; (4) A new task should be added after composing a project team that defines the projects specific fixed and variable elements of a business model; and (5) The development phase should have a completely iterative design. Practical implications – This study provide top managers with a framework for how large companies can work with business model innovation in a structured way and guidelines for operational managers on how they can manage the actual execution of business model innovation. By using our business model innovation process, managers are provided with a structured working process to streamline their work with business model innovation, by considering business model innovation without using too much resources. Limitations of the study – This study focused on attention to detail and depth rather than providing statistical generalisable findings. Based on different predefined criteria the case study company selected projects and individuals to participate in the empirical investigation which limited the study as it may have affected the scope and result of the study. Furthermore, there may have been ambiguity about which project we asked about during the interviews as several informants were part of several projects, affecting the transferability of the study.

Abstract:
This paper will discuss the challenges that arise in the business-to-business marketing process in the area of highly technological and innovative solutions. The authors will depict the processes that are involved in the business-to-business marketing approach and portray the challenges that arise due to a number of factors, such as trust, customer value and early adoption, when it comes to selling new technology and innovative solutions, and innovations overall, that companies nowadays need, but not necessarily want. The Diffusion of Innovation theory as well as the concept of Relationship Management will be used to put this topic into theoretical frameworks. With the support of existing literature, the qualitative methodologies of this paper are chosen in order to gain knowledge of the preferred approaches of business-to-business marketing. In accordance to this, the authors aim to analyze the diffusion of innovation and how companies today can attain customers not only within the early adopters group, but also the early and later majority, thus increasing market value and share. This exact transition has been analyzed, however not in the exact field of industrial marketing with a focus on the financial industry, though innovation and digitalization is now more important than ever.  Firms need to establish personal and trustworthy relationships with potential and actual customers in order to generate more value and implement necessary innovative solutions. In a survey conducted within the scope of this thesis, respondents emphasize the perceived level of expertise suppliers need in order to initiate collaborations. The focus on innovation and increasing customer and market values through its implementation will be discussed in order to accelerate value generation for all parties involved in an ever-changing digital environment and to fill the research gap within innovation diffusion in industrial marketing.

Abstract:
When compared to other industries, the construction industry has been slow to adopt digital technologies. BIM stands for Building Information Modeling (hereon referred to as BIM) and it represents a turning point when it comes to digitalization in the AEC sector. Despite BIM’s proven potential to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of construction projects, widescale adoption, and implementation of construction projects using BIM hasn’t happened yet. This research aims to conduct an innovation analysis of adoption of BIM in Europe using innovation theories such as Rogers’s diffusion theory and Crossing the Chasm by Moore. We hope the reader will have an understanding of the various adoption barriers for BIM in Europe after reading this research paper.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis was to identify and analyze good innovation management practices in Sweden’s most innovative large companies, excluding governmentally owned organizations. Out of 500 large organizations in Sweden, the top 25 most innovative companies have been ranked based upon over 7,000 printed press articles from 2018 available through Retriever Media. The companies are ranked by their innovations score which is calculated by the number of articles a company is mentioned in, adjusted to the company size, and multiplied with the mean sentiment score. The top 25 companies from the ranking was compared with 25 reference companies, active within the same industry based on the Swedish Standard Industrial Classification (SNI) number, that received a lower innovation score. Good innovation management practices were analyzed based on 14 qualitative interviews in 12 of the top 15 ranked companies and a quantitative survey responded by 20 top ranked and 17 reference companies. The interviews were semi structured with open ended questions to identify used practices, and the reasoning behind them. Spearman’s correlation method has been used to investigate if there was any correlation between the company’s innovation score, the mean performance score, and the mean importance score rated by respondents. The company case studies provide authentic examples on how and when different methods and concepts are used within industry. However, while theoretical frameworks often are strictly defined and described in solitary, the interviews have shown that when used within industry, it is rather the opposite. In many of the interviewed companies, frameworks and methods are modified, combined and constantly evolving. Aspects that the interviewees have expressed as important for an innovative company are: Innovation and change should be iterative, decentralized and started in small scale while receiving full support from top management. Examples of identified practices are: The innovation vision is used in the decision-making process for new ideas. Keywords connected to innovation are used for guiding new aspirations. There is an overall aim to become industry or/and digital leaders. Although the interviewed companies had similar innovation management practices, they were usually modified to fit within the company’s own organization and industry. The interviews contributed with interesting collection of practices within their authentic setting from which other companies could draw inspiration from. Lastly, a handbook was created describing how to conduct the innovation ranking annually, including a description of how to use the software as well as the required script of code.

Abstract:
Over the last few years there has been a downturn in business. As a response, many companies have initiated various downsizing activities – often on a short-term financial basis – in order to improve the competitive position of the company. Yet, at the same time, innovation is often cited as the key to long-term success by the very same companies. The central problem examined in this book is whether downsizing and innovation are compatible. The problem was studied during a two year exploratory case research in six cases – selected from a well-defined reference population consisting of 37 companies – facing the exact challenge of simultaneously downsizing and trying to sustain its high level of innovation. The simple answer found in the study is yes. Companies can simultaneously downsize and still maintain a high level of innovation, but it is difficult and challenging and it depends on the company’s ability to handle the knowledge creation process. So what is needed? Create an understanding in the company, at all levels, that balancing knowledge creation – the ability to share and transfer knowledge – is one of the most important tasks in order to remain innovative over time. This is done by building a commitment to knowledge creation. This commitment is achieved through making knowledge creation a visible and central element of the strategic intent, and organizing the company so that ideas can be generated and generalized. Examples of activities include: At an organizational level there is a need to create boundary spanning activities to facilitate knowledge creation between various part of the organization, but also to other organizations. At a top management level shared visions and values need to be created; exemplified in words and action. Important is that the top management not get involved into micro-management. Avoid cutting-down on initial activities – where visualization and brainstorming are in focus – in projects aiming for innovation, as these activities are the foundations the rest of the project. This book is useful for those who are faced with the challenge of finding a balance between short-term activities, often focusing on downsizing, and the more long-term activity of being innovative.

Abstract:
Maternal health has been found to lag significantly behind in medical innovations compared to other branches of medicine such as radiology. Prenatal care, being part of maternal health, seems to be no different. Driven by this fact, this study first attempts to investigate the state of innovation implementation within the context of prenatal care in Sweden. Then, it continues with the identification of critical barriers and facilitators for the implementation of medical innovations within the same field and context as medical innovations are at some point necessary. Considering the nature of the issues at hand a qualitative study was deemed more suitable and hence was conducted. The overall work consists of a literature review alongside a planned and executed empirical study. The empirical study was conducted as a single case study comprising of three stakeholder groups that were of interest. These were: doctors, midwives, and healthcare managers. Participants were approached using a combination of convenience and snowball sampling. A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with actors located throughout Sweden. With the help of thematic analysis, a holistic view supported by all three stakeholder groups was able to arise leading to multi-faceted insights. Results show that the medical innovation implementation state within prenatal care in Sweden could have been characterised as lethargic before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic as no significant medical innovations had emerged in the field until then. However, it is discovered that COVID-19 signalled the end of this reality and abruptly moved the existing innovation implementation climate. Furthermore, regarding the potential introduction of medical innovations in prenatal care, important barriers and facilitators were discovered. The findings of the study can be of use to actors attempting to implement medical innovations in the future within prenatal care or other clinical areas and contexts.

Abstract:
This project has accepted the challenge of integrating competence from six different academies to create a versatile innovation; an autonomous amphibious vehicle for environmental monitoring. Water quality is routinely monitored by manually collecting samples from water bodies which are later on transported to a laboratory where they are analyzed, or by sampling data from stationary sensors placed at strategic sites in different water bodies. The transportation itself can pose a risk to the quality of the samples since chemical reactions can transform the sample (such as pH and turbidity) over time and thus give inconclusive data. Stationarysensors give correct momentary data, but are restricted solely to a few specific points, and often monitor only one parameter. The purpose of the current product development is to contribute to improved environmental monitoring and to a sustainable society, by creating a new efficient technical solution that monitors, analyzes and obtains data on multiple parameters of water quality of water bodies. The long-term goal is to provide responsible authorities, local municipalities, and environmental scientists with a versatile sampling method that produces high resolution, accurate and accessible data. The product development process resulted in a prototype of an autonomous amphibious vehicle that can monitor different parameters of water quality in freshwater. The parameters registered are; pH, turbidity, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and total dissolved solids(TDS). This is conducted through an autonomous mobile vehicle powered by electricity, the vehicle is programmed to drive at the surface and stop at given geographical positions where a submersible subunit collects data from different depths before moving to the next location. The vehicle is designed to navigate also on moving water bodies such as freshwater streams. Abstract:
Industry 4.0 has become one of the most talked-about industrial business concepts in recent years. This paradigm introduces the Internet of Things (IoT) with integrated technologies like radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor network (WSN) and cloud computing. The convergence of these technologies enables systems to collect and analyze data from connected assets, this presents new challenges but also opportunities for manufacturing companies that unavoidably will revalidate their requirements. In this context, the suppliers will face the need to upgrade their business to meet the requirements of the age of Industry 4.0. The purpose of this project is to study the achievements of third-party logistics Expeditors AB deploying Industry 4.0 technology in their logistics services to achieve resource efficiency. First of all, we will identify the current issues between logistic services and manufacturing companies, since the emergence of third logistics-party (3PL) is an out-turn development from industry’s outsourcing; 3PL has experienced significant changes throughout the years. Combination of Information technology (IT) and logistics have been a popular service that is widely offered by 3PL providers. It is becoming increasingly essential for the 3PL service providers’ and 3PL service users’ to adjust their future logistics strategies and operations to be part of a wider supply chain featuring digital infrastructure involving IoT, big data, localized systems of value creation, which is likely to result in a distributed manufacturing paradigm. The result from this work shows that Expeditors AB have achieved to develop a tracking tool by using IoT technology which has sharpened efficiency of time delivery. This tracking management solution gives customers clear visibility of their deliveries and also ensures the safety and security of high-value products even when it is on route or in remote locations. However, real-time tracking provides data with fine grain accuracy about the exact location of goods at any point along the supply chain which allows 3PL enabling them to deploy resources more strategically and be more adaptable to mobilize quickly across a complex global transportation network in order to avoid delayed and disruptions.

Abstract:
Goal setting is proven to affect the choices and focus of the employees towards certain tasks, therefore it has been suggested for ensuring that sufficient focus and attentions is direct towards explorative activities (Lund & Magnusson, 2015), which are otherwise at risk of being down prioritized (Levinthal & March, 1993). Such effects of goal setting can though not be expected in situations where there is low commitment to the goal program (Latham, 2004). A factor which is important for increasing the goal commitment, is having clear rationales for the goals set. However, because there are few studies on goal setting for innovation, rationales for establishing innovation goals and hinderers affecting goal commitment have still not been researched from an innovation perspective. Moreover, much of the existing goal setting theory has derived from research related to productivity aspects (Latham & Yukl, 1975;Lund & Magnusson, 2015) which have more in common with operational activities, than innovation activities. The purpose of this study is to identify rationales- and hinders to goal commitment when establishing innovation goals, and to examine how goal setting features for exploration (referred to as innovation goals) differs from goal setting features for exploitation (referred to as operational goals). This research has been conducted as case study at Sandvik Coromant, where both qualitative and quantitative data was collected. Interviews and surveys were done with the help of 32 managers from different departments and managerial levels. The findings are limited to R&D manager’s perceptions of goal setting. Findings show that rationales for establishing innovation goals are; to directing attention towards- and inspire exploration, to bring innovation to a concrete level and create knowledge, to satisfy prerequisites of innovation and/or innovation culture, to come up with new ways of working or improving processes, and to generate new ideas or/and present and implementing them. Hinders affecting goal commitment were identified as the following; misconceptions about innovation from defining it as output only, failing to convince individuals that the goal program is important and lack of resources. Further, according to this study goals for innovation differ from goals for operational activities. Goal features preferred for the two were opposites to each other. Goal features for operational activities aim to reduce variance and control the performance outcome, whereas goal features for innovation aim to trigger essential parts of innovation such as creativity, learning and experimentation, and therefore increases variance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Almost every person on earth is wearing clothes, which means everyone once in a while have to do their laundry. To wash by hand is hard labor and very time consuming. When the washing machine first came people, especially women, got more time over for taking care of their children, time for education and the possibility to get a job.   But the washing machine that is used today needs stable electricity, running water and some sort of heater for the water. This type of working infrastructure is not certain for a large part of the world’s population, even if many people have the economic means to get a washing machine. There is today no suitable alternative between the washtub and the complicated, expensive and resource demanding washing machines that is produced today.   The goal of this project has been to develop a new type of product which solves the problem with the bad compatibility with today's machines, which needs running water and stable electricity. After extensive database scrutiny and several interviews with knowledgeable people has a distinct demand been specified.   The project has resulted in a new type of innovative washing machine which from now on is called Tvättbjörn. Tvättbjörn aims shuts the big product gap that is between the washtub and today's complicated washing machines. The project group's vision is to contribute to a new view of how energy is produced and how it is used in a sustainable way. The project group wants to show an alternative to how laundry machines can be designed.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the information need of the incubators that comes from Chalmers University of Technology and are situated at Chalmers Innovation. It is also of interest to investigate how Chalmers University Library covers this information need. The investigation was carried out using qualitative interviews with representatives of the incubators. They were asked questions about the perceived need of information and which type of contacts they had with the library. The result is that the incubators feel that there is a great need for business information that is hard to find. Most companies try to fulfil this need by searching the Internet via ordinary search engines or searching in databases at the library. Since almost all of the investigated companies emanate from Chalmers University of Technology, they did not find it as a problem to keep them updated on technical issues. The majority of the companies used Internet and personal contacts to keep them updated on technical issues. For basic technical information, such as needed for entering a new field, they often used the University library. None of the investigated companies was aware of the possibility to give search questions to the library. They have not got any information of what services the library could provide. This is a question that I feel need to be addressed. It should be possible to improve the co-operation between the incubators and the library for the benefit of both parties.

Ståhl, Dennis, and Siyu Guo. "Innovation genom additiv tillverkning." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-230585.

Abstract:
Additive manufacturing, AM, is a technique that is developing in an incredible pace. Conventional manufacturing methods, like lathe turning or casting for instance, are limited when it comes to creating products with complex geometries, in these cases AM is a good complement. Previously though, material characteristics like tensile strength and yield point is something that AM has been compensating with. But in the current rate of development, the AM-technique can soon replace most conventional manufacturing methods completely. The purpose of this project is to describe the possibilities in AM today and what could be expected in the future.Since complex geometries is not a problem with AM, the products can be produced in only one step compared to conventional methods where it often takes several steps to produce a product. AM with metal is something that is developing fast and there are already many different methods, for instance Selective Laser Sintering, Selective Laser Melting, Beam Metal Deposition, Electron Beam Melting and Binder Jetting. These methods use different techniques to create prototypes and they all have their pros and cons what matters cost, strength and working speed.Tools in all forms are examples of products that requires high performance and a long life-span. To integrate the requirement of high performance and the possibilities with complex geometries through AM, a twisted drill with internal cooling channels is produced in this project. The internal cooling channels are shifting in diameter to optimize the inlet of coolant and at the same time increase the outlet. As mentioned earlier there are many different methods for AM in metal. The method that is considered the best for this purpose is Selective Laser Melting since this method creates compact metal products with high strength. A 3D-model of the twisted drill was created in Solid Edge ST9 and was then analyzed in ANSYS Workbench to see the impact of the internal cooling channels during use of the drill. The results show that the total deformation is 0,68μm and maximum tension is 33,95MPa, both in the middle of the drill. Neither the total deformation or the maximum tension reaches a critical limit and therefor the drawn conclusion is that this model would reach the requirements given to a drill. The development of new methods in AM with metal is going fast and in a near future the new techniques will have increased in working speed so much and be price effective enough to replace most of the conventional manufacturing methods completely.

Abstract:
Innovation is essential for the growth and survival of an organisation. Although innovation is viewed as important, managers generally have a vague sense of their company’s innovativeness and which tools that are available to evaluate their capability to innovate. Previous research state that scorecard-based innovation audit tools do have merit in evaluating an organisations capability to innovate, but that there are a number of weaknesses. Problems are raised concerning three areas, the dimensions of which the scorecard is based on, the respondent that is conducting the innovation audit, and the Likert scale which a majority of innovation audit tools are using. Problems in these areas affect the reliability and validity of the tool. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current innovation audit practices by examining employee’s perception of the tool. Further the purpose is to, with the help of literature and qualitative research, propose areas of improvements and bring forth ideas that should be taken into consideration in future development of innovation audit tools. The study is performed as a qualitative study with an iterative approach. Interviews were conducted with nine parties of interest, and the empirical data has been analysed through a thematic analysis. The result show that an organisation’s capability to innovate is hard to measure and that there exists scepticism whether or not an innovation audit tool does manage to do this. Further, problems exist within the identified areas of an innovation audit tool. These problems affect the validity and reliability of the tool. A problem is how the respondent of the innovation audit tool interpret the statements or questions, and how they interpret the scale. Another problem is the self-interest that may exist, depending on who is participating in the audit. Ideas to minimise these problems are brought forward and discussed in order to increase the validity and reliability of the innovation audit tool.
