Full textThis thesis is performed at WSP in Skellefteå, specializing in Rönnskär Education in Skelleftehamn. Rönnskär’s construction began by Boliden AB in 1928 and it was ready for production in 1930. It produces copper, lead, zinc clinker, gold and silver. In 2010 Rönnskär produced 190000 tons of copper and in 2013 it produced 206 000 tons. Current number of employees is 866. The electricity supply of the industrial area of Rönnskär is in very high priority and transformer failures leading to lengthy downtime and expensive repairs. Power transformers must have high operational availability transformers which purchases for production must be robust. This is a comparative study between dry type and oil insulated transformers which summarized in form of recommendation for the future purchases. The work will highlight the parameters of operational availability and operational safety make calculations for rated short time currents and losses in transformers based on manufacturers data. The aim of this thesis is to compare various parameters of dry and oil immersed transformers from different manufacturers summarized in a comparison table according to the apparent power and voltage which shows the difference between various types of transformers. This work is primarily based on the theory of transformers and at the same time on continuous dialogue with the client and the transformer manufacturer. The recommendations should be viewed as a preliminary study, a deeper analysis and further investigation is required when purchasing transformers, depending on the circumstances and the conditions. An economic analysis has not been performed because of the limited information. Keyword for this study is AOS: Availability and Operational Safety.

Full textRECCO is a company that develops rescue system for avalanche accidents. The system works by a RFID tag (reflector) and a detector. The detector senses the reflector that is attached to jackets, helmets, shoes and ski boots up to 200 meters or 30 meters through the snow. The detector is used by experienced avalanche rescue groups. RECCO will implement reflectors in hiking shoes to search for people who are in the woods and in the mountains. The purpose of this master theses is to develop a shoe test machine to be able to test the service life of the reflector. The background study was performed by an information search about the biomechanics of the leg and foot, different leg movements that may affect the shoe, different types of hiking shoes and several shoe test machines available on the market today. The implementation of the project began with a test to examine how large the forces are on the reflector acting in the shoe. The test was conducted by a pressure sensitive sensor connected to an Arduino UNO. The maximum force on the reflector was 7.1 N. This was followed by a brainstorming session that resulting in seven different concepts. The concepts were then evaluated against each other using a PUGH matrix, which resulted in a concept for further development. The analysis was conducted using SolidWorks, Matlab, and ADAMS. Detailed drawings and assembly of the model were made using SolidWorks. The calculations were made on bearing housings, plain bearings, linear ball bearing and the motor using Matlab. ADAMS was used to simulate the movement and to verify the Matlab calculations. The result of the final concept was succeeded. The machine's movement and the influencing forces on the reflector mimic the performed test that was made at the beginning of the project. Improvements that can be done is to change to a more powerful motor to achieve a more constant speed or a flywheel to reduce the strain on the motor. For further work RECCO can program a switch that turns off the motor when the number of cycles are achieved.

Full textDistrict heating is the dominant heating method for apartment buildings in Sweden, and its competitor is the heat pumps that have become increasingly efficient and have a better impact on the market. At the same time, the government has set the 2020 targets in order to reduce and improve Sweden's energy use. As the housing sector accounts for almost 40 percent of Sweden's total energy use, the report's purpose is to study how energy consumption for older homes can be reduced by changing energy systems or by maintaining an existing district heating system, but performing energy efficiency measures. The energy systems studied in this report are district heating, geothermal heat and air-water heat pump. The data used in the report has been largely collected from a apartment building located in Vingåker, owned by Sjötorps hus AB. In order for the results to be more general, two example houses have also been studied; A small house and a larger apartment building. The result of the study shows that the biggest cost of district heating is in operation, and thus this option is also the most expensive for the two major houses. However, both investment costs and maintenance costs are significantly higher for heat pumps and vary depending on where in the country they are to be installed, unexpected downtime and breakdowns. The result also shows that it is not profitable for a small house to switch from an existing district heating system to a heat pump. The conclusion is that energy efficiency should be the first option to reduce the energy consumption of a property, especially as the stock of older houses will increase. No matter how little the energy consumption for the newly built houses are, the older houses will be the largest part of Sweden's total housing stock. The fact that the heat pump uses less energy is no long-term solution to energy efficiency. Instead, energy efficiency actions should be the first option when the desire is reduced energy consumption.

Full textToday, a large part of the population owns a mobile phone. These are manufactured, consumed and disposed to a large extent, and the consumption pattern shows a short lifetime for mobile phones. Manufacturing leads to dangerous emissions, and the disposal of mobile phones are not always taken care of in the best way, which causes harm to the environment and nature. Seeing how this is a big problem is the reason to why this study has been carried out. The aim of the study was to identify the categories of software problems that are behind the replacement of mobile phones. In addition, the software’s role in the replacement of mobile phones in relation to social factors and hardware problems was investigated. This was done through a qualitative interview study with a varied selection of twenty people. Identified categories that led to mobile phone replacement are: Hardware damage, Battery, Performance, Other mobile phone, Offer, Discontinued updates, and Storage space. Identified categories for software-related issues include: Performance, User-friendliness, Energy consumption, Bug, Enforced functionality, Inaccessible functionality, and Software size. For future research we suggest quantitative studies for validating our results using a larger, representative sample of respondents.

Full textThe textile consumption is directly related to greenhouse gas emissions. The production of one-kilogram new textile contributes to an emission of approximately 15 kg of carbon dioxide. The increasing consumption of new textile is therefore not tenable. A study showed that by doubling the use of a garment, the environmental impact can be reduced by 49%. This study examines what opportunities there are for fast fashion companies to evaluate the physical lifespan of garments through simulated wear and tear and find improvements that can increase the physical lifespan. A company has been used as a case study and five different t-shirts have been analysed .A qualitative and quantitative study was performed to identify which tests that could be used to simulate the wear and tear and evaluate the physical lifespan of the t-shirts. Abrasion resistance, resistance to pilling and repeated washing have been used to represent the wear and tear during the use phase. Further, dimensional stability and colour fastness have been important factors to investigate. The simulated wear and tear showed that long staple fibres, higher mass per square inch and higher stitch density had a positive effect on the result for several tests. The report showed that the most common reason for consumers to discard their t-shirts are dimensional changes. Two of the t-shirts had the lowest percentage dimensional change and therefore have the best conditions for a long term use by the consumers. The conclusion is that simulated wear and tear are a good method for comparing garments but cannot be used as a tool to make improvements that increase the physical lifespan. For that to be done, more specified tech packs and yarn specifications are essential. Quality requirements specifications used for a larger product group cannot be used to ensure that all garments that meet the requirements actually have a long physical lifespan. Quality requirements specifications should therefore be designed for individual garments or smaller product groups, in this case t-shirts.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of the study is to examine how an outdoor company, through it's communication, can create a long lasting, durable and sustainable product value for its customers, with the intention of increasing the product life span. The result of the study can hopefully contribute with information and knowledge for companies and industry organizations on how to create or communicate a long lasting product value. The study has been based on a marketing communication and consumption behavior perspective. Method: A mixed method of qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey was carried out for collection of data. The interviews and survey were contracted out of four key words, which were consumer behavior, sustainable knowledge, marketing communication and product value. Findings and conclusion: The findings of the study shows the importance of the company knowing it's target audience and what level of sustainability knowledge they possess. Regarding this, the communication should be adjusted and easily available. To motivate the customer to care and repair their garments communication regarding climate impact, possibilities for repair and easy tips on washing and impregnation should be communicated continuously. Service in the form of a long guarantee is also of value when trying to increase the product life span. Relevance: The study contributes relevant points on how communication can lengthen the user time of a garment by the primary customer, which can lead to a decrease in consumption. Only one outdoor company was studied, which opens up opportunities for further research where more companies could be studied. In this case it would be worthwhile to compare companies with a clear sustainable communication profile, to companies without one. This kind of comparison could show eventual similarities and differences in consumer behavior.
