Abstract:
ABSTRACT Title: Working Capital Management in Telecommunication sector: A case study of VGC telecoms Author: Gbenga Segun Akinwande Supervisor: Anders Hederstierna Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in business administration, 15 credits (ECTS). Background and Problem Discussion: The efficient management of working capital is very vital for a business survival. This is premised on the fact having too much working capital signifies inefficiency, whereas too little cash at hand signifies that the survival of business is shaky. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to study the working capital management in the small and medium scale businesses, using VGC Telecoms Company as a case study, so as to establish factors influencing working capital performance; examine how cash management, inventory management and trade credit management affects working capital management; company effectiveness in converting working capital to ready money; how working capital management impacts on the problem of slow development and to offer recommendations on possible ways of improving working capital management Method: Literatures bordering on different areas of working capital management were reviewed. Thus, this research employed qualitative and quantitative analysis; and semi- structured questions were drafted based on the issues raised from the review of various literatures. In addition, materials from journal articles, textbooks, working papers and industry practitioners are put into consideration. The use of internet and e-mails to send out questions were explored where appropriate. Analysis on the company’s financial statement was carried out in order to verify my findings. Theory: In this research, the theory section looks at various concepts that come up when analyzing the consequences of working capital management for company value and the factors that influence a company’s working capital management performance. I have therefore chosen the most common concept for the theory section. I have also tried to create a theoretical understanding for the company’s sensitivity to a workable WCM policy Analysis: In the analysis of the research findings, I employed qualitative approach to the data analysis whereby the impacts of the poor WCM on the company were discussed in depth. Conclusion: The findings corroborate the postulation of Weston et al that a company’s investment in working capital is a substantial percentage of its total investment. In case of VGC Telecoms, it is as high as 65 percent. An inefficient and ineffective management of this investment will result in slow pace of development and ultimately to the business failure. The performances of the company in the different spheres of working capital management were scored as follows:- • Cash management – 65.4 percent • Inventory management - 78.6 percent • Trade credit management and financing decisions - 60.0 percent This is an average performance of 68 percent. That is, the company’s performance is above average. This is a good performance. The financial statements as interpreted reinforce the validity of this result. The liquidity ratios are high; the collection period is short; and the cash cycle is not quite expansive. This makes it possible to sustain sufficient cash flow for the smooth running of the business. The management of working capital impacts on liquidity, investment portfolio and profitability. All these three factors are decisive in the growth or failure of a business. Hence, good performances in working capital management affects these decisive factors favourably and thus, contribute to growth and success of the business.

Abubaker, Mahmoud A. J. "Work Life Balance Policies and Practices: Case studies of the Palestinian Telecommunication Sector." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/14367.

Abstract:
AtkinsonThis study explores Work Life Balance (WLB) in two Palestinian organisations. It argues that the nature and content of WLB policies and the reasons for their adoption in many Arabic organisations differ from those in Western organisations. Additionally, research is under-developed concerning the role of line managers in interpreting access to WLB practices, and to what extent such WLB practices are accessed and utilised by individuals. Based on a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with 49 employees and managers, this study shows that WLB policies involve, particularly for female employees, mainly family support, and financial, social, and religious benefits. These reflect cultural and religious characteristics of an Arab, Islamic country. In addition to identifying the role of government, and the needs of a female workforce, this study develops a new theoretical framework explaining the role of religious and cultural variables, as well as international networking of the organisations, as factors underlying adoption of WLB policies. Line managers often used Wasta, being the political and religious origin of individuals as criteria in granting benefits to individuals. WLB practices are useful for women, but males made less use of these practices, preferring strong ‘breadwinner Arabic cultural norms. A valuable contribution in understanding the extension of WLB policies in Arabic settings is offered, as well as cultural, social and religious reasons for their implementation. The study presents a theoretical model of the adoption and application of WLB policies which can be used in further crosscultural research.

Abstract:
Even though international cooperation traditionally is a concept encountered in public international law, it has an important role to play in the private satellite communications sector. Satellite communications being activities that intrinsically have a global outreach, mutatis mutandis they require legal rules that would not focus on purely regional or local interests. National and international space law have for the past decade encountered criticism with respect to obvious insufficiencies that in turn affected space activities. The first reaction of learned space lawyers was to call for some redrafting of international space law. A second thought about it had them take into account national legislation in this possible harmonization process, but in any case this was to primarily be of concern for States.
However, the new millennium has brought its share of intellectual renewal and in the field of space law it has been translated in the acknowledgement that the private sector would have an important role to play, on the international scene, for the improvement of space law. It is this new legal thinking that has been characterized as "international cooperation" as applied to the private sector, that is the subject of this study. Hence, what is looked at is the position of the satellite communications sector on the international scene and what expertise it has to share with public fora for the overall improvement of space law and space activities.

Alofi, Mohammed Ghalib. "Organizational culture in the Saudi telecommunication sector, by focusing on the role of wasta." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/10567/.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of wasta is a controversial topic because of its cultural and social contexts. It is considered as an important indigenous form of informal influence in Saudi society. Recently, the use of wasta has become more common in human resource practices (recruitment, promotion, and training) in Saudi organizations. As a result of such practices, wasta is the primary factor in deciding who obtains a job, promotion, and training. However, studies analysing the impact of wasta on management practices remain limited and most them do not address it systematically. Therefore, this research seeks to fill the gap in the literature pertaining to the various forms of wasta as practiced in Saudi Arabia in order to build a better understanding of its process, practices and impacts. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 30 male Saudi employees and managers employed by two telecommunication companies in Saudi Arabia. This is the first study in this respect; no other study to date has discussed what forms wasta takes in Saudi society and the importance of the waseet (middleman) on the outcome of gaining jobs, promotion and training. This study suggests three models relating to the wasta practices: wasta based on one middleman, wasta based on multi-middlemen, and wasta based on the blood connection. The study also shows that wasta inside the company is more effective than when the waseet is operating outside the company and the position and power of the middleman are important factors on the outcome of wasta. Furthermore, this study reveals that wasta negatively impacts on human resource procedures by undermining policies in three ways: bias of implementation; intervention; and ambiguity in policies. The findings of this study could help the authorities eliminate or at least reduce the influence of wasta on human resource management decisions.

Oberholzer, Stephanus Marius. "A model to promote entrepreneurial competitiveness in the South African telecommunications sector." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1012150.

Full text
Abstract:
The fast pace of technological advancements is a driver of change in the world. In telecommunications, advancements as well as sector transformation pose challenges to entrepreneurs to remain competitive. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the promotion of entrepreneurial competitiveness in the telecommunications sector in South Africa. In order to achieve this purpose, the objective was to develop and test a theoretical model to promote entrepreneurial competitiveness in this sector. The purpose of the study was that if the factors that influence entrepreneurial businesses in this sector can be identified and recommendations applied, the competitiveness of these businesses can be improved. The approach was as follows: 1. Identify the factors, in a literature review, in three areas related to this study, namely, Entrepreneurial Orientation, Telecommunications and Benchmarking; 2. Develop a conceptual theoretical model comprising these identified factors which formed the base for the data collection; 3. Develop a measuring instrument to empirically test the relationships described in the conceptual model; 4. Empirically test the proposed model and suggested hypotheses by means of sourcing data from entrepreneurs in the telecommunications sector in South Africa and thereafter statistically analyse the sourced data; 5. Formulate the final theoretical model to support the research objective and 6. Propose recommendations based on the results of the statistical analysis. The three areas of literature study analysed were Entrepreneurial Orientation which focused on the entrepreneur, the entrepreneurial process and the positioning of technological entrepreneurs in the sector. The telecommunications section included an overview of telecommunications from a global perspective followed by specific focus on the South African sector. The section on benchmarking covered business performance aspects together with measurement techniques and benchmarking institutions relevant to entrepreneurship and telecommunications businesses. Initially, the literature study delivered four intervening variables (Entrepreneurial Orientation, Opportunity Recognition, Resource Allocation and Strategic Positioning) which influence entrepreneurial competitiveness. Within these four intervening variables, twelve underlying independent variables were identified. All the variables were hypothesised as they were perceived significantly to influence the dependent variable, perceived to be entrepreneurial competitiveness in the telecommunications sector in South Africa. These factors, clearly defined and operationalised, were structured in a questionnaire which was sent to entrepreneurs in the telecommunications sector. A response rate of 37 percent was achieved. Data collected from 301 questionnaires were subjected to various statistical analysis techniques. Cronbach-alpha coefficients were calculated to confirm the validity and reliability of the measuring instrument that was tested whilst the latent variables were confirmed by exploratory factor analysis. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesised significance of the relationships between the variables. Due to the sample size limitation, the conceptual model could not be subjected to SEM as a whole and consequently two sub-models were identified and subjected to further analysis. The SEM results presented the factors influencing entrepreneurial competitiveness whereafter the final model was presented for this study. This study contributed to this specific field of knowledge as follows: 1. New literature contributions are made in the field of entrepreneurial competitiveness in a specific sector; 2. It is the first known research conducted into the promotion of entrepreneurial competitiveness in the telecommunications sector in South Africa; 3. A theoretical model was developed that can be used to promote entrepreneurial competitiveness in the sector and 4. It suggests recommendations on empirically tested factors that significantly influence entrepreneurial competitiveness. Additional knowledge has been gained through the identification and description of how the following individual factors significantly influence entrepreneurial competitiveness in this sector: Benchmarking; Entrepreneurial Mindset; Entrepreneurial Management; Entrepreneurial Orientation; Financial Resources; Infrastructural Change; Regulatory Alignment and Technological Entrepreneurship. The present study was conducted in a time frame where sector transformation is prevalent in South Africa. The current circumstances relating to sector transformation and infrastructural changes will not last forever. The theoretical model therefore is limited to the specific sector conditions in a specific time cycle. In conclusion, the model and managerial recommendations that are presented can act as a guideline for entrepreneurs to adopt in order to improve the competitiveness of their businesses.

Abstract:
The telecommunications landscape in South Africa is changing. The monopolistic nature of the sector, previously dominated by Telkom has come to an end. Telecommunications companies, in particular SMMEs face the opportunity as well as challenges to find new ways of doing business successfully in this changing landscape. The research problem states a business model for SMMEs in the telecommunications sector. The author’s research is aimed to assist SMMEs in this sector to reposition them and be successful. The literature review focused on the local telecommunications market in South Africa, a comparisons between telecommunications markets in relation to other countries with similarities in their telecoms sectors as well as the opportunities and challenges SMMEs face in the market space. Regulation and new technologies pose opportunities but also potential dangers for business owners to conduct business. Traditionally, a typical resell model would be fully dependant on the way the monopolist determined the shape and structures of small companies, but the research indicated innovation and creativity will be the drivers to be successful today. The research design was done by using a survey questionnaire to telecoms end users. The literature review and a survey aimed at the consumer market were done and the findings highlights focus areas where SMMEs need to direct their energy and resources in to establish the business model. With reference to both the literature review and the empirical findings, the business model can be formulated and supported by a strong entrepreneurial person or group of people. In addition, the recommended business-level strategy is an integrated and coordinated set of commitments and actions the SMMEs will use to gain a competitive advantage by exploiting core competencies in specific telecoms markets.

Al-edenat, Malek. "The role of transformational leadership in reinforcing product and service innovation : the direct and indirect impact : a case of Jordanian telecommunication sector." Thesis, University of Bolton, 2017. http://ubir.bolton.ac.uk/1439/.

Full text
Abstract:
Today, the world is witnessing huge and comprehensive developments in the social, political and economic aspects of life. This dynamic environment describes the rapid change which can be attributed toward recent developments in the telecommunication tools. Evolving technology has transformed the world into one big country, a phenomenon referred to as globalisation. Jordan is a developing country and can tremendously benefit from this surge of rapidly evolving technologies. Recently, the telecommunication industry has gained massive attention because of the latest technologies that are catering to the growing demands of society. Innovation is the key element in this equation, particularly, in this sector since this sector is responsible for delivering the latest products and services that enhance the various aspects of life. On the one hand, leadership in organisations is characterised as a vital factor and trigger for managing people in this sector to be more innovative. On the other hand, it is imperative that leaders in such organisations possess specific skills equipping them to encourage and support employees for critical thinking and problem-solving. This in turn augments the idea generation process that results in the production of innovative products and services. Correspondingly, transformational leadership style gained more attention in the past two decades and is described as the main engine propelling the innovation wheel. Likewise, job satisfaction is fundamental to the efficient functioning of organisations. However, job satisfaction is likely to be the most affected by the leadership. In addition, knowledge sharing is identified as one of the most vital assets for organisations. Furthermore, knowledge sharing sustains a comparative advantage that allows an organisation to acquire a superior position among the competitors. Moreover, it is also a key element for enhancing the innovation. Also, previous literature has revealed that transformational leadership is one of the most influential styles that positively affects knowledge sharing, job satisfaction, and innovation. The current study responds to the call for more investigation regarding the direct impact of transformational leadership (TL) on innovation (INN). In addition, the study seeks to scrutinise the indirect impact of (TL) on (INN) through the mediating role of job satisfaction (JS) and the moderating role of knowledge sharing (KS), particularly in the context of Jordanian Telecommunication Sector (JTS). The study has been conducted by employing mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative). Therefore, for all study purposes a concurrent strategy was used, with the collection of quantitative data from the employees of this sector, and 486 valid responses were used to test the casual relationships among the study’s variables. Besides, 25 teams’ leaders from one company were interviewed for the qualitative analysis purpose. These interviews were designed and structured with the aim to explain the results obtained from the quantitative part. For the quantitative part, structural equation modelling (SEM) has been employed with Amos23 software in addition to SPSS software. Also, paths analysis was used to investigate the direct impact of TL behaviours on INN and the indirect impact through the mediating role of JS. The results revealed a direct positive impact of the TL on INN, and identified TL as the ideal style of leadership suited to this sector. However, the results also showed that TL behaviours have a positive and direct impact on the promotion and enhancement of the JS level among employees in this sector. Moreover, the study showed that JS acts as a vital element in the relationship between TL and INN in JTS. Additionally, JS was found to partially mediate this relationship. Alternatively, multi-group and interaction analysis were both employed for the purpose of investigating the moderating role of KS. The study found that KS moderated the relationship between TL and INN in JTS. The qualitative part, however, revealed differences and similarities in practising TL behaviours among team leaders in different departments within the same company. These differences lead to different consequences on JS as well as INN. The study has made significant contributions to the theoretical, practical, or/and methodological aspects. Theoretically, it contributes to the assertion on the direct impact of TL on INN, the mediating role of JS, and the moderating role of KS in the relationship between TL and INN. It also offers a better understanding regarding these relations in the business environment; particularly, in the telecommunication industry within a developing country. Although, Jordan qualifies for such an evaluative insight, it has been ignored from such a systematic investigation of the telecommunications sector. Moreover, the study provides a theoretical framework that links all variables undertaken in this investigation and can be instrumental towards other future researches evaluating such relationships. On the practical aspect, the study offers a number of recommendations that are worthy and helpful towards more developments in the telecommunication industry. Finally, the study uses a mixed methods approach that leverages the advantages of using two methods rather than one single method.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study reported on here was conducted between December 2003 and April 2004. The aim of the study was to assess the use of Health Channel Broadcast Multimedia (HCBM) in order to maximise its success. The HCBM is an Information Technology method that was used to disseminate health information in public health facilities. HCBM was installed in health facilities and was used as an education tool. This was done by further developing the clinical skills of the health care workers (HCWs) and to inform the patients, including the community members on HIV/AIDS and related communicable diseases. The study was conducted in eight health facilities in seven provinces where HCBM was piloted. Facilities and forty-nine health professionals (HCWs) were selected conveniently and one hundred and twenty-eight patients were sampled using a systematic random method. The convenient sampling method was relevant since these were key facilities with HCBM. There were very few HCWs who did view HCBM and they were drawn into the study. HCBM used programmes disseminating messages in Afrikaans, English, sePedi, seSotho, siSwati, isiXhosa and isiZulu. The Rapid Assessment Response (RAR) approach was used to give a quick appraisal of the study. The report focuses on the cross-sectional reporting of the quantitative technique of the RAR. Of the HCWs, 86% had viewed the broadcast content, 70% were satisfied with the broadcast mode of service delivery; 56% indicated that the messages were good and added educational value to their professional work, while 52% chose to use the IP box content with HIV/AIDS topics. Ninety-two percent of HCWs stated that HCBM targeted patients and young people, 48% said HCBM had the ability to convey information and 48% said it was capable of addressing health problem. When HCBM was being set up, 62% HCWs engaged in decision making. Patients mentioned that HCBM as a method of information dissemination was educative (62%) and informative (52%). They reported that they did hear messages on HIV/AIDS telling them that medication was available for free to treat within 72 hours after being raped (72%); they had the right to say no to unsafe sex (92%); and 76% said the broadcast had the ability to change people’s behaviour. Respondents reported that the messages were easily understood (44%). The conclusion is that the findings will be useful to inform the government and managers of HCBM programmes on how to maximise the success of HCBM, especially at the implementation phase.

Abstract:
This research explores the nature and extent of management development and training of senior and middle managers working in Palestinian telecommunication organizations using a basic trichotomous (three-stage) model: needs assessment, training development, and evaluation. A critical review of the literature is presented to identify the different approaches and key principles that make up the field of training and development. Using the survey approach, primary data were collected to answer the research question. A total of 142 questionnaires were distributed among senior and middle managers with 110 questionnaires being completed and returned (77 per cent response rate). Field work was also supported with 10 selected interviews with high ranking officials in the surveyed organizations to help corroborate the results. Thereafter, data was analysed using SPSS and spread sheets, and then compared with data available from literature. Despite the presence of a rather systematic approach to training, the findings show that the current status of training in the surveyed organizations is inadequate with heavy emphasis on traditional methods throughout the three stages; the current system does not offer a holistic perspective to training and development. This study presents an exploratory investigation into the training status in telecommunication organizations. It provides a fundamental foundation for future research aimed at expanding the available knowledge within the context of the study. In addition, specific strengths and weaknesses in the current system are identified using the trichotomous model in a more practical manner. Overall, this thesis offers both professionals and academics a fresh perspective on training in Palestinian telecommunication organizations; it not only highlights the importance of training but also stresses that future initiatives and programs are more carefully designed and implemented.

Abstract:
In almost all countries worldwide the telecommunication sector was characterized by state owned monopolies, and supplying telecommunication services was understood as a public duty. In the eighties of the last century, most countries began to liberalize their telecommunication market and try to open it up for competition. The establishment of competition in a former monopolized sector can be only successful by taking specific network related features into account. This thesis deals with the establishment of competition in the telecommunication market taking into account the so-called "essential facilities doctrine". This doctrine was developed from the U.S.American anti-trust law and is a helpful instrument to ensure access, under specific circumstances, by new competitors to facilities which are controlled by a market dominating operator.

Abstract:
Since the early 90s up to today, we assisted to a wide dissemination in the mobile phone’s use, which has assumed a very important role in our lives. But, in 2005, DECO (Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection) and, in 2009, the European Commission concluded that customer mobility between providers in Portugal telecommunications’ market was reduced. As a consequence, The Portuguese Competition Authority (Autoridade da Concorrência - AdC) carried out an online survey in order to study in depth this reality and try to find the most important mobility restrictive factors for customers in the telecom market, using a descriptive analysis. Other studies, which have been conducted in some countries of Europe and Asia, used econometric modeling or other analyses that aimed at studying customer mobility in the telecommunications market. The present study aims to give another perspective, different from that of AdC, proposing an econometric model of the answers given by respondents to the online survey mentioned above. Assuming the more realistic scenario, in which number portability is available, this study is intended to explain the switching costs, by using as a proxy the minimum monthly savings that customers would require from a new service provider to switch from their current provider. However, due to the nature of the responses on this variable, we used a two-stage model where, in the first stage, the customer decides whether to switch or remain in the current provider, and the Logit Binary Choice Model is used. In the second step, if a customer decides to switch provider, we determine the major factors that influence the choice of minimum iv monthly savings to switch, where the Ordered Logit Model was chosen, as the savings were interval-coded. In the two initial models, we included a set of explanatory variables related to sociodemographic characteristics (such as gender, age group, social class, region, the average monthly expenditure with the phone) and contract features (as the card type, the phone lock, the main mobile network provider), in order to estimate the effects on the switching behavior, in a context where number portability is available. We concluded that the respondent's social class, the average monthly expenditure with the phone, the region and the provider are the main determinants in the decision to switch or remain in the current service provider. For customers that decide to switch provider, the value of monthly savings that they would require is dependent on gender, social class, the average monthly expenditure with the phone and the phone lock. The other explanatory variables do not appear in the final results, because they are not statistically significant. These conclusions did not meet completely our expectations, for instance in the case of the phone (un)lock, which we expected to be determinant in the decision to switch provider. However, these conclusions follow the line of the results obtained in international studies.

Abstract:
Purpose: The effects of deceptive advertising practices on customer loyalty towards mobileservice providers have been investigated empirically by this study. The main contribution ofthis study is to investigate the perceived deception-customer loyalty relationship under themoderating effect of corporate image and mediating effect of customer trust. The study is done in the context of Pakistan’s telecommunication sector.Existing literature is insufficient to explain perceived deception and customer loyalty relationship. We proposed a model to test and explain the interrelationship of deception, trust, loyalty and corporate image. Research Methodology: we have adopted quantitative research method, according to needof our study. A total sample of 232 respondents has been achieved with the help of selfadministeredquestionnaire. Measurement scale for perceived deception were taken fromChaouachi & Rached (2012) and for corporate image, customer trust and customer loyaltyhave been found from Aydin & Özer (2005). Analysis & Findings: Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used for analysis.Correlation analysis, simple and multiple regression analysis were conducted under theinferential statistical part. The findings have rejected the proposed hypothesis that perceiveddeception is negatively associated with customer trust and loyalty. We found customer trustas a mediator between perceived deception and customer loyalty while corporate imagemoderates the relationship between perceived deception and customer trust. Research Limitations: the study could not achieve highly representative sample of overallpopulation as Facebook was selected to conduct survey due to time constraint. Implications and future research: The study shows that deception in advertising perceivedby customer does not affect trust and loyalty in a negative way which suggests that there areadditional factor that can explain the relationship further. A comparative study withqualitative focus could be revealing in this context.

Since 1978, China has gradually reformed its economic system from the traditional planning economy to a more competitive market-oriented economy. After an effort of three decades, China has now become the world's fourth-largest economy behind the US, Japan and Germany. Nevertheless, the continuous national economic reform and entrance of foreign companies have significantly changed China's business status quo, and resulted in increasingly drastic market competition in the domestic market. Faced with this competitive environment and economic pressure, thousands of Chinese companies have implemented Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in order to improve operational efficiency and enhance core competencies.

Abstract:
The telecommunications as the other utilities services plays an important role in the competitive strategy in modern societies. In spite of this, the telecommunications sector in Angola faces a number of difficulties, reflected on some weakness such as the lack of capacity to provide services to the whole of the country; the deficient quality of services; overcharged tariffs; and finally the services are not reliable. However, in response to the constant technological evolution and the percentage increase of the sector on the GDP of most countries, the structure of the telecommunications sector tends to change dramatically. In the particular case of Angola, there have been considerable changes in in the regulations within the sector, the reason being not just the ones previously explained but also the improvement in the political, economic and social scenarios of the country. On the whole, there as been an agreement concerning the need for some adjustments in the regulatory system and in the governance models. It is believed that they are economically feasible and may help to overcome the sector's weakness. The combination of these issues will improve not just the performance of the telecommunications sector, but also the Universal Service's goals. On one hand, this dissertation presents the main obstacles to the development of this sector, and, on other hand, the main mechanisms that drive the development, based on the insights of the regulation and hold-up-theories. Finally, based on a cross-sectional matrix, the least square method is used to estimate multiple linear regression models that allow the evaluation and simulation of various scenarios regarding regulation policies that stimulate the growth of the sector being studied.

This study proposes a production model that increases the manufacturing capacity in a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) of garments with an aim to reduce the nonfulfillment of order deliveries. An assessment has been done and waiting times between production processes have been identified, along with defective products and inefficient work methods. This study proposes the design of a lean manufacturing model under the change management approach, whose methodology comprises five phases. In phase 0, awareness and training sessions are conducted (change management). Then, phase 1 reorganizes the work area (plant layout re-distribution and 5S) and phase 2 seeks better workload balances (line balance and Heijunka implementation). Later, phase 3 standardizes work methods (standardization). Finally, the proposed model will be validated to determine whether the selected operating tools are supported by the awareness that contributes to increasing production. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Martínez, Santos Fernando. "Competition and Regulation in the Retail Broadband Sector: a Holistic Approach for Pricing Policies." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/320177.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the pricing policies used by operators when they establish broadband tariffs. The studies draw on datasets that combine broadband plans’ characteristics and tariffs with other sources of data at country level to reflect the market structure and regulation activity. The pricing models in this dissertation share the common thread of using three groups of variables to explain the level of broadband prices: 1- the characteristics of the broadband service, 2- the operators’ commercial strategies, and 3- the market structure and regulatory policies implemented. The pricing models are estimated using the following econometric techniques: pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) with country and time fixed effects, and two stage least squares (2SLS, instrumental variable techniques). The level of broadband prices concerns both national governments and international organisations, and this dissertation contributes to provide some guidance to regulators and competition authorities, helping them in the implementation of policies so as to foster competition in the market and ultimately stimulate the diffusion of broadband services. The first thesis chapter analyses the determinants of broadband Internet access prices in a group of 15 EU countries between 2008 and 2011. Using a rich panel data set of broadband plans, it is shown how downstream speed (Mbps) increases prices, and that the price per Mbps of cable modem and fibre technologies is lower than that of xDSL. Operators’ marketing strategies are also analysed as it is shown how much prices rise when the broadband service is offered in a bundle with voice telephony and/or television, and how much they fall when download volume caps are included. The most insightful results of this study are provided by a group of metrics that represent the situation of competition and entry patterns in the broadband market. It is found that consumer segmentation positively affects prices. Moreover, broadband prices are higher in countries where entrants make greater use of bitstream access and lower in countries where there is an intensive use of direct access (local loop unbundling). However, there is not a significant impact of inter-platform competition on prices. The second chapter analyses the strategies adopted by mobile operators when they set the prices of broadband plans. It is explained that operators design multi-tier price schemes in order to segment consumers according to their preferences. Operators usually offer only a few unlimited usage contracts and three-part tariffs for data limited plans. In the later case, the tariff includes an access fee, a usage allowance (the number of GB that consumers can use for free), and a penalty system for the case in which consumers exceed the contracted allowance. The empirical model shows that the prices of usage based contracts are lower than those of unlimited contracts, and that the monthly price depends on the type of penalty included in the plan. The prices also depend on other characteristics of the service such as the provided technology, the download speed and the telephone call allowances. It is also explained that most plans bundle mobile broadband plans with smartphones. This type of plans last longer and might be more expensive than the plans that only include the SIM card. Specifically, it is shown that the monthly price of the broadband service is more expensive when the plan includes an iPhone or a Samsung. Moreover, it is found that the monthly prices are higher when the plan includes a discount for the acquisition of the smarthphone. Finally, this chapter also studies the effects of market structure and entry regulation on prices and shows that mobile virtual operators have helped to reduce prices. The third chapter studies the mobile broadband market in Spain. The mobile broadband service has experienced a strong expansion in Spain, reaching a penetration of over 70% of the population at the beginning of 2014. This growth can be explained by the benefits that offer the third and the fourth generation of mobile technology, and by the continuous price reductions. In spite of this, prices in Spain are still higher than the European average. This chapter explains the process of technological innovation that has allowed the emergence of mobile broadband, and its launch in Spain. New commercial strategies used by mobile operators, such as bundling and plans that include fixed and mobile services are examined. The analysis shows that the presence of mobile virtual network operators and bundling have been effective in fostering competition and reducing prices. It is also discussed how technological convergence between fixed and mobile services has promoted restructuring and market concentration.

Abstract:
Telecommunications industry had been seen as natural monopoly industry and regulated for a long time. However, with the development of technologies and the change of the view of economy theories, this industry remains little feature of natural monopoly. And modern telecommunications industry exhibits the characteristics of network effect, dynamic, convergence and sensitivities. Telecom market requires both deregulation and liberalization to improve the efficiency, innovation, and ultimately to enhance consumer welfare. The experience of deregulation in the United States and the European Union can be taken as a good example for the countries who are in the progress of opening the telecom market, such as China. Especially, the implementation of the EU competition law will provide the enlightenment for reform of telecommunications industry in China. On one hand, competition law should be applied to adjust the anti-competitive behaviors in Chinese telecom industry and independent sector-specific regulatory agency should be established to ensure fair market access and balanced market structure. On the other hand, in dealing with the conflicts between competition law and sector-specific regulation, at the beginning of liberalization, competition law should be taken precedence over the regulatory policy.

The privatization of the telecommunications sector in Brazil, caused structural changes in the market, going from state monopoly to a nearby structure of competitive markets. To prove this notion of evolution, were calculated for the mobile industry, some indices of industrial concentration, namely: market share, concentration ratios (CR), Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HH) and Theil entropy index (ET) by the number of cell phones by operators (inThousands) in the period 2000 to 2010, with all these measures confirming the decentralization of the mobile market in the last decade.

Abstract:
Innovative companies in technologically advanced environments have to deal with the consequences of choosing between a resource based strategy and possibly missing out on the benefits of cooperative knowledge, or collaborating with their network of suppliers, customers and even competitors and risk diluting their competitive advantage. This thesis is concerned with the cooperative aspect within intricate networks of technologically innovative firms. To gain a better understanding of this phenomena, the most innovative sector in Sweden has been chosen for a case study. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the dynamics of innovation within the telecom sector in Sweden, and determine the level of cooperation within the telecom sector, in terms of the flows of information and embeddedness. The method chosen to fulfil this purpose was via a qualitative approach, and in the form of a case study. Relevant data was collected through five interviews with key personnel within the two companies of interest (Ericsson & TeliaSonera), and triangulated with secondary quantitative and qualitative data. Results indicate that the Swedish telecom sector benefits from a fertile environment that fosters innovative activity, and to that reason it has claimed leadership in the worldwide telecommunications industry. Additionally, this same environment promotes collaboration between the different actors in the sector. A closer examination of the cooperation between TeliaSonera and Ericsson in the 4G network roll-out, indicates that the cooperation, albeit being successful, could be ameliorated further through an increased embeddedness of the partnership.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is an investigation of the post-privatisation performance of the international telecoms sector. Firstly, the general hypothesis (1) of this thesis has been pursued, which states that the privatised telecoms companies perform differently from their non-privatised (private) counterparts. Several tests were applied; namely, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The principal finding was that there was no significant difference in performance. Secondly, the next hypothesis (2) states that the financial performance of each company is positively related to that of the other two selected companies. For this purpose, multiple regression tests were performed to investigate any inter-relationships between BT, AT&T and NTT. It was found that the performance of each was affected by the other companies. Thirdly, the next hypothesis (3) states that, in a global market, company performance is related more closely to the sector than to each respective stock market. It was found that performance was affected more significantly by their respective stock markets than by competitor global players. Fourthly, the next hypothesis (4) states that, in terms of competitive advantage, NTT exhibits through time a superior position compared with BT and AT&T on account of its monopoly position. It was found that monopoly was not an issue. Fifthly, the next hypothesis (5) states that, of the three global players, AT&T is more adversely affected in its competitive advantage on account of its having a weaker monopoly position. It was found that AT&T had a competitive advantage from 1990 to 1993. BT took the lead until 2000, then NTT forged ahead after the Japanese market started to become more liberalised in terms of competition. Original tests were performed regarding the changing degree of competitive advantage of these three companies. This required an evaluation of the relationship between competitive advantage and priceearnings inverses, capital asset pricing model derived rates of return and dividend-based rates of return. A random walk with drift model was also applied, in order to evaluate forecasted trends. Finally, BT's short-term debt-financing problems were examined. To overcome these difficulties, BT raised funds via a rights issue, selling off Yell and other profitable assets and de-merged their mobile company. It was found that the strategic risk probability of a failed rights issue was quite small.

Abstract:
The telecommunications sector faces rapid technology changes, which require huge capital investment, changes in rules and regulations, changes in customer behaviour and increasing customer demand. This rapid development directs how the telecommunication service operators deploy their strategies and network infrastructure and continue to evolve their business models. A unique requirement of the telecom industry is the need to manage and deploy planned, unplanned and emergency resources concurrently. The ‘dynamic capabilities’ (DC) approach can be used as a framework to respond to this critical requirement for both managers and researchers. This study has a particular focus on dynamic reconfiguration capabilities (DRC), as these play a critical role in the deployment of strategy. The current literature shows clear limitations regarding how DRC emerge and how they can be used to manage concurrent strategy approaches, which are relevant to the telecommunications sector. Five case studies from a telecommunication service provider are used in this research. Three types of data were collected, namely: 23 interviews, 10 direct observations and over 120 documents. A two-stage coding process is conducted for each case, and causal network diagrams are used to extract findings. A cross-case analysis enabled the identification of the empirical practices relating to the research questions. Findings from the case studies confirm the relevance of several practices previously highlighted in the literature. They also revealed additional practices that support the DRC lifecycle. The case studies are performing most of the practices outlined in the theory of the DRC lifecycle framework, with different degrees of emphasis, especially in the deployment phase. This research extends the current theory by identifying the role of DRC in deploying concurrent strategic approaches. It extends the resource-based view (RBV) and agility theories, which fail to adequately address long-term plans, and collapse when the market is very dynamic. Furthermore, it contributes to the DC literature by identifying the organisational practices that support development, deployment and improvement in the telecommunication industry. Also, it addresses an important gap in the literature by providing organisational practices and evidence of the DRC role to support the concurrent approaches to strategy deployment in the telecommunication industry.

van, Gelder Brenda A. "Exploring the Feasibility of a Strategic Alliance Approach to Telecommunications Provision in Rural Municipalities." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42347.

Full text
Abstract:
Rural communities require means for obtaining access to affordable broadband infrastructure and services to meet their economic development, education, and quality of life objectives. Due to the comparatively low potential for return on investment in serving isolated rural communities, the private sector telecommunications providers have proved unwilling or unable to provide beyond the very basic services for rural communities. Private sector providers must maximize their return on investment as it is their responsibility to shareholders. Return on investment is maximized in urban areas as opposed to rural areas because the high capital cost per connection is higher in rural areas; the operating cost per connection is higher; and the revenues per connection tend to be lower. This thesis explores the feasibility of municipal and private sector provider strategic alliances as an approach to provisioning rural areas with improved telecommunications infrastructure and services. As a means of determining whether the possibility exists of a â meeting of the mindsâ between municipalities and private sector telecommunications providers, a series of interviews was conducted. Common themes from the interviews were analyzed for areas of mutual interest and of polarized perspectives. In pursuing an alliance model, communities may need to consider less than the optimal technological solution in exchange for the opportunity to exemplify the ability to collaborate with a willing private sector partner. The results suggest that, while the prospects for strategic alliances as an emerging business model appear dim, opportunities do exist for rural communities and small private sector companies to find mutual interest on an exceptional basis in developing strategies for access to telecommunications infrastructure and services.

Abstract:
The background in which global organisations operate in at present is very competitive. In an ever faster growing global economy the role of the entrepreneur within the large organisation becomes more and more important to ensure the company keeps the competitive edge. The Linde Group is a world class company with a world class management strategy and systems to support the strategy. Part of the The Linde Group management strategy is being a high performing organisation, wanting to give all employees the opportunity to contribute to improvement by sharing their ideas with the company. This study was done at African Oxygen Limited, South Africa, a regional business unit in Africa for The Linde Group. African Oxygen Limited embarked on various programmes to create opportunities for employees to think in an entrepreneurial way. Middle managers at African Oxygen Limited play an important role in the innovation programs implemented at African Oxygen Limited. Against this background, this study seeks to confirm whether African Oxygen Limited, South Africa has a true entrepreneurial climate and whether the middle management level involved with these initiatives share this perception. Corporate entrepreneurship is characterised by people who are innovative, creative, spend time and take risks. To support these entrepreneurial activities, the organisation needs a climate and culture that is beneficial to these activities. An entrepreneurial orientation within an organisation is marked by dimensions such as innovativeness, pro–activeness, risk–taking, competitive aggressiveness and autonomy. The entrepreneurial behaviour among middle level managers is most critical to the effective implementation of corporate entrepreneurship. The primary objective of this study was to assess the entrepreneurial climate in African Oxygen Limited and to make recommendations to foster corporate entrepreneurship within the organisation. The literature review was instrumental to gather secondary data on corporate entrepreneurship and to understand its dynamics. In order to gain primary data, quantitative research was carried out. The study population comprised lower and middle management, who were requested to complete questionnaires. This was followed by statistical analysis. The empirical results indicate no practical significance in respondents' perception based on the gender of the respondents. However, the results do indicate practical significant differences between the relationship between the groups of middle and lower management level with respect to entrepreneurial climate and the perceived organisational success. An evaluation of the corporate entrepreneurial climate in the organisation was performed and the average mean for the study calculated. Seven out of 13 constructs evaluated had a mean above the average mean of x = 3.502, the other six constructs evaluated had a mean ranked lower than the average mean. All of the constructs still had a mean above three out of five. All four of the used variables measuring the perceived organisational success, were reported by respondents to have a mean above three which is the neutral point. The average mean of the perceived success of the organisation was 3.688. It was clear that the constructs for perceived organisational success had a fairly strong presence, but there is still room for improvement. With reference to the entrepreneurial climate within Afrox the conclusion is that it is not optimally entrepreneurial and initiatives put into practice that should encourage entrepreneurial behaviour, are falling short. The study concludes with practical recommendations on assessment of the achievement of objectives and suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
A quick and timely response to a customer request provides an important competitive advantage for a company. Experience reuse as intended by experience management facilitates an acceleration of the process of preparing offers. From a technology-oriented point of view, experience is "valuable, stored, specific knowledge that was acquired by a problem solving agent in a problem solving situation" . In the situation of creating an offer in response to a customer request, such valuable knowledge from a company’s experience might include past prices of products or services for a similar customer request. Especially in the telecommunication market such prices are volatile and depend on many impact factors such as the required technology, bandwidth of available lines, or the time period in which the telecommunication service is required. In the run-up for a large sports event, for instance, purchase prices might be significantly higher than after the event when the investment in new infrastructure has provided additional capacities and when there is less demand.

Abstract:
Competition policy is meant to ensure a level-playing in the market, but its ultimate goal is to enhance consumer interests. The telecommunications sector is one of the two sectors that have set up a competition policy in Hong Kong. This paper examines the current competition policy framework in the telecommunications sector by analyzing the level of consumer protection using the Structure-Conduct-Performance Paradigm. It examines in detail the consumer related complaint cases received by the Office of the Telecommunications Authority in four markets: fixed line telephone services, mobile phone services, International Direct Dialing services, and Internet services. Regression analysis results reveal that more competition in a market has a positive and significant effect on the frequency of complaints about misleading or deceptive conduct on the part of operators in the period from 1999 to 2006. Also, smaller and newer operators tend to receive more complaints. From the lessons we have drawn from the telecommunications sector, a more comprehensive policy coped with consumer protection regulation is needed in order to better promote consumer interests in Hong Kong.

This research aims to explain the political process that resulted in the current institutional arrangement of the federal transportation sector in Brazil. The Federal Law 10233, of 2001, restructured water and land transportation; it created two autonomous regulatory agencies, a council to propose national policies to integrate the different modes of transport, and the National Department of Transport Infrastructure. Using the theoretical approach of historical institutionalism from contemporary Political Science and the method of controlled comparison between two contrasting cases, namely the cases of the telecommunication and transportation institutional reforms, the analysis concludes that the temporal ordering of the reform process and the mechanism of policy feedback had a significant impact on the outcomes of the transportation case, delineating a pattern of institutional change characterized by the introduction of new rules and organizations on top of existing ones, whereas in the telecommunication sector the institutional change was typified by the removal of existing rules and organizations and the introduction of new ones.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Under conditions of pervasive change, the most difficult challenge facing the market leader is sustaining its leading position. The primary research problem statement relates to the construct of Disruptive Innovation that has the potential for new entrants to substantially alter the basis of competition and impact the business models of incumbents. Ultimately, how are shapers distinguished from adopters of Disruptive Innovation? A qualitative research methodology was selected given the nature of the research. The main findings from the analysis indicate that nontechnological attributes distinguishes shapers from adopters of Disruptive Innovation in the telecommunications sector of South Africa. However, Disruptive Innovation as a construct, is largely unknown, and does not adequately explain the changes in the landscape of the telecommunications sector of South Africa. The implications for the research results are that other factors or features, such as the role and impact of the State, have a role to play in explaining the features of the South African telecommunications sector.

Abstract:
My research analyses issues in the relationships between the state and the market, including the roles of key institutions and organisations and their interactions in the policy and regulatory governance arenas. The findings, based on documentary analysis, focus group discussions, perceptions analysis and in-depth interviews with representative actors in the public policy system in Sri Lanka, focus specifically on the linkages between the country’s institutional endowments, the reform process and regulatory governance; and the role of mental models, path dependence and ideology – specifically that of the donor and local epistemic community – in influencing economic reforms and regulatory governance. The analysis set forth in this thesis draws on Douglass North’s conceptualisation of New Institutional Economics as well as on the conceptualisation of public policy by seminal scholars in the field such as Harold Lasswell, David Easton, Bill Jenkins, Michael Hill and Wayne Parsons. These theoretical constructs are particularly useful in exploring and obtaining a rich understanding of complex institutional and policy processes and relationships, as well as policy outcomes. Moreover, this framework sits well with the interpretivist research philosophy, inductive approach and qualitative research methods which I use to gather “thick” information on privatisation, competition and regulatory governance in Sri Lanka and in Sri Lanka’s telecommunications sector. An overview of the existing literature on privatisation, competition and regulatory governance in general and in the telecommunications sector in particular, points to a paucity of public policy analyses in developing countries. As such, whilst acknowledging the limitations of single case study research in relation to policy transfer, I posit that my research findings do shed light on a number of critical issues that are relevant to scholars and practitioners interested in understanding the policy process in developing countries. My research findings provide a real world illustration of the futility of dichotomising the state and markets; instead, constructs such as policy and regulatory space are more useful than those such as the regulatory state. Incorporating these constructs of policy and regulatory space also allows for a “thick” understanding of the dynamics between political and socio-economic institutions, organisations and individuals and their impact on policy outputs and outcomes. My findings also provide for a better understanding of regulatory governance in developing countries. Constructs such as responsive regulation, regulatory society and independent regulation that are typically conceived in the literature in a developed country context are critically explored in the Sri Lankan setting. Finally, my research findings extend the literature on privatisation, competition and regulatory governance by illustrating that forces of competition and contestability are more important than ownership change in terms of policy outputs and outcomes, and that – as reflected in the case of Sri Lanka’s telecommunications sector - competition and contestability can in fact transcend forces of weak regulatory governance.

Abstract:
Questions and problems related to the articulation of industrial re 1 at ions structures in modern soc i ety have been rna tters for long debate over a number of years. However, the establishment of industrial relations formations is a product of a variety of complex societal processes located inside and outside the irTlllediate industrial environment. This thesis examines the links that exist between wider societal processes and systems of industrial relations and workers I participation with reference to the Greek Telecommunications Sector. In the first instance (Chapter 1), issues of economy and society tha t have an effect upon indus tri a 1 re 1 at ions are exami ned wi th reference to the processes of gl oba 1 economi c deve 1 opment, ca pi ta 1 accumulation, dependency and the more recent phenomena of 'flexible specialization ' and 'post-Fordism'. These are related to the presentation of industrial relations structures (Chapter 2) which are examined using comparative evidence to illustrate their various differences and similarities. It is argued that industrial relations and workers I participation structures have to be examined in the 1ight of national and international patterns of political, social and economic development. Also, a critical evaluation of contemporary approaches to industrial relations is presented. Chapter 3 is concerned with identifying and evaluating the main issues related to Greek economic and social development. That is examined in relation to the position of the country in the international division of labour and also to the national characteristics that articulate the specific nature of labour relations. Chapter 4 presents the case of the Telecommunication Sector using empirical material drawn from various sources, from observation and from employee responses to a questionnai reo The framework of industrial participation is discussed both in relation to the internal circumstances of the industry and also to the more general environment in which it is located. Finally, Chapter 5 re-evaluates the categories of 'industrial participation' and 'employment' in the specific context of Greek societal development and considers the validity of some of the concepts used in contemporary discussions of labour organization.

Abstract:
Small developing states can use proper regulatory frameworks in policy and sector development to implement efficiency and consumer safeguards to the sector. However, sufficient research on the impact of telecommunications regulatory institutions on micro economies has not been conducted. Capture theory was used as the theoretical lens for this thesis. In doing so, a quantitative analysis was done using, cross-sectional pooled time series to determine how an independent telecommunications regulator impacted the telecommunications sector in the English-speaking Caribbean. All the data acquired for analysis were secondary yearly data collected from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) from 1993 to 2012. Specifically, this study examined how prices, investment, infrastructure, and competition in the telecoms sector are affected by the type of regulatory regime (independent or non independent ) for fixed line and mobile services. Results indicate that the type of regulatory regime has a statistically significant impact on fixed line services and price of the telecommunications sector (p < .0001). However, this regulation was absent in other areas such as cellular services, broadband usage, telecoms investment and competition. The potential for positive social change is tied to recommendations specific to developing countries to ensure their regulators have autonomy in making decisions regarding the volume, quality and costs of telecommunications services. Legislation must minimize any overlap in the roles of policy makers, legislators, administrators and regulators to ensure that the regulatory framework addresses the particulars conditions of the country in which it operates.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the impact of Build Operate Transfer (BOT) arrangements with foreign partners on state telecommunications enterprise P.T. Telekomunikasi Indonesia (TELKOM) and its employees. A total of 3207 employees from six regional divisions were administered a self-report survey measuring perceptual, and attitudinal responses two years after implementation of BOT arrangements. The questionnaire measured perceptual responses of job characteristics, structural characteristics, communication, training, adjustment to and perception of change, and attitudinal responses of organisation commitment and job satisfaction. The productivity measures were obtained from four productivity measures namely 1) revenue per employee, 2) human resource cost per total cost, 3) lines in service per employee and 4) cable performance. A profile of the respondents was obtained from demographic data. Four statistical methods were used to evaluate differences between divisions under management of BOT arrangements and TELKOM (which were non-BOT). Firstly, discriminant function analysis was employed to provide information regarding discriminant patterns of dependent measures for BOT and TELKOM groups divisions. Secondly, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was employed to provide deliberately maximise the differences between BOT and TELKOM groups of divisions. Thirdly, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) enabled the assessment of differences between divisions and between groups of divisions (BOT and TELKOM) by removing the effect of covariate productivity measures. Lastly, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was employed to analyse the relatedness among dependent measures. Prior to all these analyses, data were examined for robustness, validity and reliability. Results show that transfer of managerial practices in divisions with BOT arrangements is feasible, if BOT contract specifies this objective. However, the contract obligations for infrastructure and revenue sharing created differences in productivity achievements between BOT and TELKOM divisions. The private partners concentrate on the short-term objectives of infrastructure development and revenue sharing. The main implication from these findings is BOT scheme is a form of joint venture private public partnership that blends foreign private national and organisational cultures to have a significant effect on the home organisation and employees, but has the benefits of knowledge transfer and can potentially improve the competencies and capabilities of home state enterprise over time.
