Full textThe subject concerns the management of the Information systems and Telecommunications. I propose a detailed description of various topologies of inter-connection and security. I propose a modelisation of the information processing systems, to study the behavior of the systems on models and not on the system itself. I present an innovating solution based on the concept of IP collect and Multi operator routing, using the XDSL technologies of infrastructure operators, to the router in a centralized site. I propose project guidelines and methodology intended to provide a common framework covering the control of the fundamental processes and their organizational and technical impacts on the deployment in companies

Full textIn this thesis, we propose a new risk management framework for telecommunication networks. This is based on theconcept of Risk Assessment Graphs (RAGs). These graphs contain two types of nodes: access point nodes, or startingpoints for attackers, and asset-vulnerability nodes. The latter have to be secured. An arc in the RAG represents apotential propagation of an attacker from a node to another. A positive weight, representing the propagation difficulty ofan attacker, is associated to each arc. First, we propose a quantitative risk evaluation approach based on the shortestpaths between the access points and the asset-vulnerability nodes. Then, we consider a risk treatment problem, calledProactive Countermeasure Selection Problem (PCSP). Given a propagation difficulty threshold for each pair of accesspoint and asset-vulnerability node, and a set of countermeasures that can be placed on the asset vulnerability nodes, thePCSP consists in selecting the minimum cost subset of countermeasures so that the length of each shortest path froman access point to an asset vulnerability node is greater than or equal to the propagation difficulty threshold. We show that the PCSP is NP-Complete even when the graph is reduced to an arc. Then, we give a formulation of theproblem as a bilevel programming model for which we propose two single-level reformulations: a compact formulationbased on LP-duality, and a path formulation with an exponential number of constraints, obtained by projection. Moreover,we study the path formulation from a polyhedral point of view. We introduce several classes of valid inequalities. Wediscuss when the basic and valid inequalities define facets. We also devise separation routines for these inequalities.Using this, we develop a Branch-and-Cut algorithm for the PCSP along with an extensive computational study. Thenumerical tests show the efficiency of the polyhedral results from an algorithmic point of view. Our framework applies to a wide set of real cases in the telecommunication industry. We illustrate this in several practicaluse cases including Internet of Things (IoT), Software Defined Network (SDN) and Local Area Networks (LANs). We alsoshow the integration of our approach in a web application

Full textThis thesis is a retrospective empirical study on project Management. The case under study is the Alcatel telecommunications project in Lebanon from 1994 to 1998. The aim is to compare the project manangement of this project with the actual state of the art. The value of this choice resides in the complexity of the project itself and the prevailing difficult envirnment. This project being a large scale one in terms of finance, technical means, number of companies involved from the Alcatel group and outside it, joining from different countries, in addition to the heterogeneous and eclectic. On the academic level, this project summarizes by itself all kinds of possible and imaginary scenarios. The approach is more from a management point of view as opposedto an engineering one. Therefore, it tends more towards framing the responsabilities, authorities and accountabilities of the project stakeholders than towards the choice of the project planning software. While writing the present thesis project management evolved and the state of the art progressed. We reflected this progress by regularly updating the bibliography. As we go through the thesis, we realize that the science of Project Management strives on the experiences gained on large scale projects ; there will always be a story to tell after a large scale project. The experience gained on our project has benefited Alcatel's project management procedures and, just like the waves produced by a pebble thrown in a lake, other projects, professionals, students, consultants and authors will have some benefit. The outline of the two parts of the thesis reflects the chronology of the project life cycles :the theoretical part of the thesis corresponds to the planning and design phase of the project and the second to the execution

Full textThis study is concerned with the analysis of the motivations and the conditions of the telecommunications deregulation process in large industrial countries. In the first part, through an empirical approach, we make a comparative analysis of the deregulation in the united states. Japan, united kingdom, germany and france and the regulation of the telecommunications sector in europe. We focus our attention on the roles of the different players involved on the telecommunications services market, especially those concerning authorities. We distinguish two types of deregulation models : the "adaptativ" model and the "programmed" model. In the secnd part, we present a few models the purpose of which is to analyse, from a theoretical point of view, the economical signification of the deregulation process and the resulting market's organisations. For this purpose, three main issues are examined : the telecommunication multiproduct cost function properties ; the telecommunications demand externalities and their influences on the telecomunication demand modelling ; the determination of an optimal pricing of telecomunication services

Full textSatellite telecommunications have seen a tremendous increase in interest, due to its ability to reduce the digital divide. In fact, a geostationary satellite can take advantage of its very wide coverage and high capacity to reach areas where deployment of a terrestrial network would not be possible, such as transports, or too expensive to be profitable, as in remote areas. Traditionally focused on digital television broadcasting, the latest generation of standards have evolved to reflect those new needs, dealing extensively with the transmission of interactive data, particularly by natively supporting Internet protocols. Scheduling has arisen as a major issue of those modern systems, since it has to deal with to highly uncorrelated processes: demand and capacity. Demand, on one side, evolves with user's needs, and therefore with the applications they are using: video, voice or data. Capacity, on the other side, depends on meteorological conditions over the satellite's cover, as the frequencies used in such systems are very sensitive to wet atmosphere attenuation. This thesis aims to study the problem of scheduling and resource allocation, hoping to achieve a service that can match with terrestrial networks in terms of services, while showing the best possible performances. If numerous solutions were proposed on this topic, none is taking into account all of the current system's constraints. In addition to the variable nature of system's capacity, the conjunction of variable demand and quality of service constraints constitutes an additional issue. Furthermore, we have to consider the practicability of our solution in a real-time context, necessary if we aim for industrial use. We have first developed a scheduler architecture for the Forward link, based on utility functions, thus allowing a simple formulation of the capacity versus demand compromise. We show, through a detailed low-complexity implementation and accurate simulations, how our algorithm could be used efficiently in an industrial context. We then focus on the Return link, where we propose a resource allocation method, taking into account quality of service and quality of transmission jointly to deliver an efficient yet consistent resource allocation. Simulations show that our algorithm achieves a better efficiency and traffic handling than reference solutions presented in the literature

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to investigate methods and strategies for efficient routing and mobility management in personal environments. The concept of Personal Ubiquitous Environments (PUE) is introduced which accommodates heterogeneous devices and access networks of different users and sustain the notion of sharing resources in a distributed manner. A prerequisite for achieving the resource (devices, networks) sharing in personal environments is the deployment of suitable communication protocols which establish efficient multi-hop routes betweens the devices of the PUE. Personal Network Routing Protocol (PNRP) has been developed to perform policy-based routing in personal environments. Moreover, in certain personal networking scenarios, the infrastructure network components (i. E. Gateways) are more than one-hop distance from the user's devices; Adaptive Distributed gateway Discovery (ADD) protocol is thereby proposed to efficiently discover the multi-hop routes towards the gateway in a totally distributed manner. All the more, since the personal environments regroups heterogeneous access networks, an efficient mobility management architecture is proposed which offers unified location management and seamless handover experience to dynamic personal nodes. The proposed protocols are assessed by means of numerous communication scenarios; the simulation results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed protocols

Full textIn the Next Generation Networks the control plane and the service plane are entirely separated. This separation ensures the autonomy of each plane and enables their independent development and deployment. The specification of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), as a unique service control overlay over the heterogeneous networks, eases the interaction between these planes. However, this interaction becomes challenging when multiple services are invoked during a session. The goal of this thesis is to provide IMS, with mechanisms to manage the interactions between services. We addressed two problems in this field: the negative interactions that are due to the conflicts between services and the positive interactions that enable the composition of services. The service conflicts occur as services invoked during an IP session behave correctly when processed separately from each other, but not when running together. We defined a SIP-based algorithm and the associated mechanisms to enhance IMS service invocation. This algorithm is the core of the Service Broker, a new functional entity in charge of managing the service conflicts. We validated our proposal through a performance evaluation and prototyped the Service Broker on an open source IMS platform. By means of service composition all kinds of service inter-working scenarios, independently of the underlying control functionalities, can be achieved. We defined a SIP-based service composition management algorithm, over the Service Capability Interaction Manager (SCIM) of IMS. This algorithm enables the interoperability and cooperation between different services and allows enriching and personalizing the services based on the user needs and preferences. We presented the application of our proposition in different use cases and validated it through the analytical studies

Full textThis thesis focuses on the networking enterprises, and, more particulary, to france telecom. It analyses how output and resource allocation methods are affected by exposure to competition. The particular model traditionnally used is one of administered resource allocation usually based on a single product model produced and offers in quantity, with a context which is specific to the principle of service public in he framework of a monopoly. La the telecommunication field both the scale and variety of product is extensive as is rapid technological change permanent allow which added to the exposure to competition presents a need for a new growth model based on variety and adaptability which raises +tensions ; reflecting the merging of the need for managing the complexity of the new with the durability of the elements of the old model. The + administered ; model of resource allocation is contrasted with the new model of output allowing the identification of the critical dysfonctional aspects of the old model. The response is to decentralize and subcontract. These two concepts are analysed theorically to show that their termes of reference are varied which then need the resulting complex of new realities to be addressed. Analyses of types decentralization and subcontracting which establish the distinction between hierarchical decentralization and participative decentralization are undertaken. When cross referenced with the typologies of different contractual forms which have also been developed the two analysed features taken together allow for a more lucid examination of the difficulties of putting the new resource allocation methods into operation

Full textOptimizing satellite links is a major challenge to increase satellite systems profitability. Increasing the frequency reuse is one of the most promising approaches. Reusing multiple times the same frequency enables to transmit more information on the same frequency, as long as the two or more signals do not generate too high mutual interferences. It is therefore of capital importance to control these interference impacts, be it through the use of frequency reuse scheme or through the use of advanced dynamic interference coordination techniques, where the user selection is done with the knowledge of interference levels

Full textAfter the revolution made by the world-wide deployment of cellular networks, a wind of change is blowing through the wireless universe: the growing appetite for wireless capacity has motivated the emergence of new broadband radio technologies. These newborn technologies, mainly WiFi and WiMAX, will be an inevitable link in the future networking chain while coexisting with cellular technologies. This thesis addresses WiFi and WiMAX and proposes contributions in heterogeneous scenarios implicating these technologies. In the first part, the WiMAX-UMTS coexistence is investigated by proposing a network-centric JRRM algorithm, while at the application level, an enhanced voice scheduling for WiMAX uplink is derived in order to facilitate telephony support in hybrid WiMAX-UMTS networks. The second part undertakes the hierarchical deployment of last-mile WiMAX-WiFi networks. The dimensioning of such networks is tackled by jointly considering performance and economic aspects. The thesis ends by giving an insight into the modeling of WiFi networks in infrastructure and ad hoc modes

Full textRevenue management for mobile voice telecommunications has not attended much attention up to now. Among the few existing works, most have focused on solving the network congestion issue and on controlling traffic. However, for mobile telecommunications operators, even if congestion control is a good reason for considering a revenue management system, it also represents a good tool for increasing carrier revenue. Therefore, in this thesis we investigate dynamic pricing strategies for voice telecommunication industry with economical perspectives considering network resource control as a second priority. The challenge is to propose efficient tools and methods to optimize pricing of the new commercial service. The offer systematically sets a dynamic pricing in real time, depending on time, space and network load. The price offered to the customers typically changes every 30 minutes and differs from an antenna to another one. A simple daily rule is used to compute prices, setting a same price at two different times instants when their network loads are at a same level. The challenge is to optimize pricing for this new offer using an estimation of the traffic and its price sensitivity day by day to accurately compute the prices in a timely fashion. A deterministic approach has been adopted to estimate demand and load, to formulate the revenue maximization problem and to solve the dynamic pricing problem. Load and demand are modeled as functions of time, cells, and price. Using these models several mixed integer quadratic programs (MIQP) have been proposed

Full textThe aim of this research is to identify the roles of the management accounting use in the telecommunication regulation in France. In order to identify and analyse both explicit and implicit functions of management accounting use in regulation, we have studied the regulator/regulated relation by exploring several theoretical references and we have researched the management accounting literature for potential functions of management accounting in this specific context. A qualitative empirical analysis has been made. The research leads us to characterize this relation and to identify the management need it creates, which gives our first results on the role of management accounting in the interconnection regulation. The processing of data collected through interviews and documents analysis led us to the results that beyond the explicit functions of management accounting there are also several implicit functions. The results prove the roles of management accounting beyond its technical ones

Full textFemtocell network are deployed in the macrocell’s coverage to provide extended services with better performances. Femtocells have a short-range and low power transmissions. Each FAP supports a few number of connected users.Owing to these inherent features, one of the most challenging issues for the femtocellular network deployment remains the mobility management. In this thesis, we propose new handovers algorithms adapted to the characteristics of femtocells network. As a first part,we consider the direction of mobile user as a key parameter for the handover decision. To do so,we propose a new handover algorithm called OHMF. Its main purpose is the optimization of the list of FAPs candidates based on signal quality as well as the mobile direction to better choose the FAP target. After that, we propose an algorithm called OHDP based on the direction prediction using the linear regression. The idea behind this is to predict the future position of mobile based on its current and previous position. As a second part, we focus on mobility prediction problem to make an efficient handover decision. We propose a novel handoff decision algorithm called OHMP that uses HMM as a predictor to accurately estimate the next FAP that a mobile UE would visit, given its current and historical movement information. In order to adapt our solution to the characteristics of femtocells network,we propose a handover algorithm called OHMP-CAC based on HMM tool as a predictor, a proposed CAC and the availability of resources of the predicted FAP,SINR and the traffic type.In order to assess the efficiency of our proposals, all underlying algorithms are evaluated through simulations and real mobility traces

Full textDriven by the growing demand for high-speed broadband services, WiMAX technology has emerged as a competitive alternative to wireline broadband access solution. WiMAX technology, considered in this thesis, offers an IP-based framework that provides high data rates at medium and long range with the ability of supporting fixed, nomadic, portable, and mobile access. Moreover, based on the IEEE 802. 16 standard, the technology provides a set of built-in QoS mechanisms to support heterogeneous classes of traffic including data, voice and video. The 802. 16 standard, however, leaves open the resource management and scheduling mechanisms, which are crucial components to guarantee QoS performance for these services. In this thesis, we evaluate the performance of WiMAX systems in both fixed and highly mobile environments. More particularly, mobile WiMAX is investigated as a V2I communication medium since it is expected to play a major role in ITS. Moreover, after surveying, classifying and comparing different scheduling and admission control mechanisms proposed in this work-in-progress area, we propose two QoS solutions. Both solutions address PMP systems operating in TDD mode. The first solution includes a hierarchical scheduling algorithm that adapts the DL/UL allocations to serve unbalanced traffic. The amounts of these grants are set by the CAC module that adopts a Max-Min fairness approach. The second QoS solution presented in this thesis is a multi-Constraints Scheduling Strategy (mCoSS). In addition to data rate constraints, it supports delay constraints of real-time applications and handles bursty traffics. MCoSS is based on a modified dual-bucket traffic shaping mechanism

Full textAs the programming of the distributed applications has become very complex, new programming models were created to facilitate the comprehension, the design and the implementation ot these applications. Amongst these models, the remote procedure call and the structures based on event notification imposed themselves as successful solutions for distributed programming. The middleware platforms have greatly eased the dialog between heterogenoeous parts of the systems and the component-oriented development helps to manage the complexity, the heterogeneity and the need for adaptability and reconfiguration of these systems. However, these platforms make an implicit, yet natural, association between these programming models and the communication models (synchronous and asynchronous) they support : remote calls are synchronous (simultaneous availability of the communication entities) and applications programmed in an event-based paradigm communicate asynchronously, with messages. The use of both types of communication, rarely addressed due to its programming difficulty, remains aprolific research subject. In this thesis we propose a mechanism of chanching dynamically (during the execution) and transparently 'without changing the application code) the communication model between the components of a distributed system. This mechanism is integrated in a architecture that adds an adaptative behavior to a communication platform. The utility of changing the communication type in the context of large scale or mobile applications, as well as the limits of this approach are studied. The mechanism was implemented on a J2EE open source application server in order to validate the working hypothesis and to perform the necessary benchmarks for performance gain and flexibility of programming comparisons

Full textThe actual trend in the IT (Information Technology) market is to create a new environment that will enable end-users to access a variety of services (TV/Radio programs, Internet, Multimedia applications, Games. . . ), wherever they are, whenever they want and whatever terminal they use. The heterogeneous networks basically come from three worlds: the Telecommunication world, the Broadcasting world and the Internet world. This cross-industry synergy is jointly driven by the tremendous growing interest to Internet services and the planned adoption of the Digital SwitchOver (DSO) in UHF, enabling broadband terrestrial digital broadcasting infrastructures (e. G. DVB-T). To this end, we propose a broadband wireless metropolitan area network architecture that utilises the DVB-T stream in regenerative configurations for creating a multi-service capable infrastructure in the UHF/VHF band. Within this mixed context, an important issue arises concerning the management of resources between IP and DTV services. Towards this, we present an approach based on an interactive Dynamic Bandwidth Management System, with prediction functionalities and using adaptive filtering techniques for optimal provisioning of IP and Digital TV services

Full textTelecommunication or computer network management is increasing in importance and use. The diversity of networks elements manufacturers (or resources) is against an homogeneous view of the network. The standardisation of resources access interfaces is necessary to management goals. Specifications languages independent from manufacturers and technologies are existing and are used in real life situation. The OSI is specially involved and proposed several models as an information model with its associated object oriented language: GDMO. This thesis is about various views of relationships, their specification and their exploitation in network management area. The actual formalism proposed by the ISO in the General Relationship Model (GRM), does not concem the behaviour ofthese relationships. There is a need for an extension of the GRM in order to formally specify the behaviour that will be imposed to objects participating in a relationship. Use of relationships by network management application needs a software environment that we propose. This software allows relationships services to be extracted from extended GRM specifications

Full textIn this work we address the interference problem generated in a network of femtocells cooperating at channel state information level and not at user data level. In a first part, we investigate some cooperation strategies based on conventional MIMO pre-coding techniques such as maximum ratio transmission and zero forcing. These strategies are designed for some particular deployments especially those where operators aim at offering some fair QoS for their subscribers. In a second part, we exploit the interference alignment (IA) technique to manage the interference issues. We propose in a first step three joint clustering and scheduling schemes for overloaded femtocell networks where IA is not feasible on all the links. The complexity of these clustering schemes is reduced in a second phase. Then, we design a distributed algorithm for the constant MIMO IC that aims at ensuring a set of signal to interference plus noise ratios (SINRs) at the different streams of all the links in the network. The motivation behind this algorithm is that IA is not always the best strategy depending on system signal to noise ratio. Finally, we tackle the issue of the choice of the target SINRs. We propose three network coordination algorithms aiming at optimizing the used target SINRs to run the already proposed distributed algorithm

Full textContributions due to the use, by firms, of new information and communication technologies, can be observed from two main levels. On one hand, firms tend to re-structure their communication systems and channels, both inside and outside. These are basic structural changes, since they tend to transform the stages of the production process, as well as the internal organization of the working groups involved. On the other hand, telecommunication infrastructures are extending the economic environment of the industrial organizations as they provide them with a kind of transparency -in terms of information. Combining these two viewpoints makes possible an original analytical approach of the present network of local activity

Full textThe concept of co-opetition analyzes simultaneous cooperative and competitive strategies from a dialectical and paradoxical perspective. Previous scholars focused on drivers of co-opetition using various theoretical backgrounds. The complexity of the phenomenon requires a multiple-level framework to understand the drivers of co-opetition. A gap exists in the literature about the implementation of co-opetitive strategies. Since paradoxical, co-opetitive strategies create specific tensions defined as “co-opetitive tensions”. To achieve their goals, partners need to manage efficiently co-opetitive tensions. The thesis aims to answer the following question: if two competing leaders join their forces in a co-opetitive strategy to reach a common objective, how do they manage the tensions resulting from the implementation of such a paradoxical strategy? Three issues come from this questioning: the drivers of co-opetition, the sources of co-opetitive tensions and their management. A third party as an architect can constrain the emergence of co-opetitive strategies. Thus, two types of co-opetition are distinguished: intermediated co-opetition and non-intermediated co-opetition. For both types of co-opetition, drivers, sources of co-opetitive tensions and their management are investigated. The empirical study is conducted within the sector of manufacturing telecommunications' satellites. The method is qualitative. It is based on two in-depth case studies of common programmes conducted by European manufacturers: Astrium (EADS group) and Thales Alenia Space (Thales group). The programme Alphabus is an exemplar case of intermediated co-opetition. The programme Yahsat is an exemplar case of non-intermediated co-opetition. The results of the study combine industry-level, organization-level and individual-level to understand the drivers of co-opetition. Co-opetitive tensions appear at the industry, dyadic, organizational, intra-organizational and inter-individual levels. Even necessary, contracts are insufficient to manage efficiently co-opetitive tensions. Information systems facilitate the management of co-opetitive tensions but specific tools and actions are needed. The study provides insights about managing co-opetitive tensions. In the case of intermediated co-opetition, the management is externalized through a third party. In the case of non-intermediated co-opetition, the management is internalized. Its efficiency depends on the team, the governance structure of the team and on the project manager. Managerial responsibilities must be duplicated and equally shared by both partners. The project manager has specific competences. Schizophrenic character, he embodies the paradox of co-opetition. Through its various missions, he is responsible for the management of co-opetitive tensions within the team

Full textMost of mobile devices today are equipped with multiple network interfaces that could be connected to different network and obtain multiple IP addresses. In this dissertation, we investigate the multihoming problems at transport layer to improve the end-to-end performance in wireless networks. Moreover, the coordination between multihoming and mobility management is studied which permit us to propose a cooperative mobility management for an environment Post-IP. Firstly, we propose a cross-layer solution for performance optimization with the Concurrent Multipath Transfer (CMT) extension of SCTP in wireless networks. Two parameters, Frame Error Rate (FER) at the link layer and Round Trip Time (RTT) at the transport layer are used to evaluate the path conditions. The simulation results show that our proposal improves the goodput. Secondly, we focus on the heterogeneous wireless links. We chose Kalman filter for the estimation of path conditions. The simulation results show that our proposal reduces the reordering degree and increases the total goodput. Finally, a cooperative mobility management architecture is proposed for Post-IP. Multihoming and end-to-end features are analyzed to present the proposal of Multihoming-based Cooperative Mobility Management (MCMM). The cooperative mobility management optimizes the handover delay in the heterogeneous access networks. The MCMM is implemented in C++ under Linux with a test-bed. The experimental results show that the handover delay can be reduced by sending update messages over the interface of the fastest path

Full textThis work is dedicated to the analysis, design and performance evaluation of physical layer network coding strategies in multiuser communication systems. The first part is devoted to study the compute-and-forward protocol in the basic multiple access channel. For this strategy, we propose an optimal solution to design efficient network codes based on solving a lattice shortest vector problem. Moreover, we derive novel bounds on the ergodic rate and the outage probability for the CF operating in fast and slow fading channels respectively. Besides, we develop novel decoding algorithms proved numerically to outperform the traditional decoding scheme for the CF. The second part is dedicated to the design and end-to-end performance evaluation of network codes for the CF and the analog network coding in the two-way relay channel and the multi-source multi-relay channel. For each network model we study the decoding at the relay nodes and the end destination, propose search algorithms for optimal network codes for the CF and evaluate, theoretically and numerically, the end-to-end error rate and achievable transmission rate. In the last part, we study new decoders for the distributed MIMO channel termed integer forcing (if). Inspired by the CF, if receivers take advantage of the interference provided by the wireless medium to decode integer linear combinations of the original codewords. We develop in our work efficient algorithms to select optimal if receivers parameters allowing to outperform existing suboptimal linear receivers

Full textService continuity is one of the main quality of service requirements in cellular networks. However, the continuity of user sessions is not always guaranteed as the changes of radio channel, namely handovers, during mobile user movements between the network cells, imposes short session disconnections. Thus, in the case of applications such as multimedia applications where a session discontinuity cannot be transparent to the users, the continuity of a service like VoIP is not guaranteed unless an efficient handover procedure is implemented. The handover procedure consists in handing off a call to a new cell when the mobile user crosses the current-cell boundaries and moves to an adjacent cell while the call is in progress. During this procedure, the mobile terminal should scan all the neighbouring cells to determine the one offering the best quality of signal a service. The coverage density of current mobile networks is often important and, to increase network capacity, mobile operators further deploy cells with small size, like picocells and femtocells. Thus, the time needed by any mobile terminal to scan all its neighbouring cells and classify those offering the best quality of signal and service can be long enough to become a critical issue for service continuity. Consequently, for multimedia applications that require short service interruption time, the number of cells to scan, before a handover is initiated, may play a decisive role in service continuity. In this context and in the case of mobile IP networks, like LTE and Wimax, we propose in this thesis a solution based on mobility prediction to limit the number of cells to scan. The objective is to predict the next cell(s) to be visited by the mobile user. If a unique cell is predicted, no radio signal measurement is needed, otherwise only the predicted cells will be scanned and the one offering the best quality of signal is selected. Thus, mobility prediction allows the network to anticipate the preparation of the handover in the predicted cell, enabling seamless handovers and thus limited call dropping rates. The solution we propose requires regular learning from the past movements of mobile users. It consists on an algorithmic approach based on graph theory and Markov chains. We define the notion of local and global profiles. The local profile is a set of closed sequences of cells the user has the tendency to regularly cross in the same way. Similarly, the global profile is a set of cell sequences often followed by a large number of users. A major difficulty of this approach is that a local or global profile does not necessarily translate into a unique path in the neighbourhood graph of cells, but as a set of paths sufficiently close, that we detect with the use of graph theory. Thus, our mobility prediction model consists in combining the notion of local and global profiles in order to compute the probability of the next moves, and thus predict the next cell of the user. We provide an implementation scheme of this model in LTE architecture. This scheme is aware of the elementary position in the network of the entities dedicated to manage mobility of users. It also takes into account the needs in terms of user data confidentiality. In order to assess the performance of our prediction model, we use data sets from real networks. The analysis of these data approves the validity of our local and global profiles approach. The comparison between prediction accuracies obtained with our prediction model and one of the best models found in the literature proves the efficiency of our prediction approach

Full textThe development and proliferation of wireless networks has contributed to the evolution of our daily lives. Mobile users can move between heterogeneous networks, using terminals with multiple access interfaces. Thus, the most important issue in such environment is the Always Best Connected (ABC) concept allowing the best connectivity to applications anywhere at anytime. To answer ABC requirement, various vertical handover decision strategies have been proposed using advanced tools and proven concepts. In this paper, two architectures interconnecting a UMTS network and another Wimax have been presented. Each architecture uses a protocol for mobility management, namely MIP and SIP. To evaluate the two procedures, we are given two indicators, the signaling cost and the vertical handover delay. To evaluate our scenarios, we have established a specified signaling messages flow diagram specific to each scenario, one based on the MIP and the other based on the SIP. Then, we have given expressions for each of the two indicators mentioned above that we have implemented in MATLAB. The results show that, generally, the scenario based on MIP has lower signaling cost and delay than the scenario based on SIP.
