Full textHow can the success of the mobile phone be explained? Are the social mechanisms surrounding the mobile phone different from those associated with the television or the car, to name just two examples? We will argue that the diffusion of consumer goods is always at heart of a normative construction as they become indispensable. We will use the concept of "norm of consumption" in well as the case of the mobile phone in France as a tool to understand the advent of these goods. Consumption norms go through a cycle of appearing, crystalising, and changing. Their apparition can be understood by to private decision which leads to posessing the object. The crystalisation of a norm occurs through the approriation of the object and the many uses deriving from their use. Finally, norms change through aggregate effects as individual actions intercross, as do the industrial and consumerist logics, the effect of which is evolution

Full textWe propose a general mobility model to characterize different mobility related traffic parameters within the service urban area. Starting with the analysis of the performance data collected in a real cellular network, we focus on the optimization in the context of a conversational service. The covered area is representative since it includes all the typical urban area such as business centers, residential centers and highways. We split the urban area up to several sub areas (residential, highways, business centre, downtown, industrial zone, university, tourist zone and shopping centre) according to the population activity and traffic characteristics. Each activity area gathers together a number of cells sharing the same characteristics. We define certain statistical distributions of the arrival processes namely fresh traffic and handover traffic and channel holding time. Then, we derive a traffic modelling in order to deduce the impact of each area on other areas and all kinds of interactions. Or approach is entirely statistical to derive distributions by means of the Kolmogorov Smirnov goodness of fit test. Using simulation with realistic hypotheses of a finite number of mobile users, call duration, channel holding lime and inter-arrival times are generated randomly by suitable exponential distributions. The cell transition process follows the transition probability matrix. Main system performance parameters in terms of blocking probability of new calls and handover blocking probability are computed and compared with measurements. Our model can be employed to evaluate the performance of realistic networks and to describe the impact on planning process

Full textThe domains of telecommunications and computing were marked these last years by major evolutions, in particular, with Internet and the mobile networks. These evolutions gave rise to the idea of a convergence between the Internet and the mobile networks, with the goal of providing more services and functionalities to the users. To reach this convergence, it was necessary ti think for new protocols and equpements. These elements (protocols, equipments, services. . . ) may be developed by different designers and this may complicate sometimes these elements correct work. Thus , before bringing them into the network, it is important to make them go through several steps of production. Among these steps appears the test step. The test step is provided in order to detect errors in the system, to correct them and to guarantee the correct operation of these elements. In the test phase, the system goes through several stages which we gather under the denomination of methodology of test. This methodology can be different according to the different test types we want to carry out. Moreover, it is important to automate these steps in order to reduce the time and the development cost an, mainly, to increase the reliability of the proposed products. In this thesis, we present two test methodologies for the mobile telecommunications domain : the services conformity test and the interoperability test. These two methodologies cover in an automatic way all the test production steps (from the systemunder test specification to the execution on a real platform)

Full textThrough which processes is the usage norm of the technical artefact that is the cell phone socially constructed? Based on the family dynamics found in contemporary families, how are the social representations of this interpersonal communication device structured? The method is interdisciplinary, drawing from sociology of family and of usages, as well as the communicational approach. The mobile phone is examined in its social object dimension (usages in public spaces, analysis of public controversies around antennae and the price of an SMS), in its technical object dimension (appropriation), in family mediation (micro-coordination, reassurance and social control), in a friendly (management of social life) as well as in a professional (work relations and conciliation of private and professional lives) network, all of which are studied in relation to consumption practices. Three usages repertoires have been identified: legitimization oriented towards intra-home relations, mixed legitimization, professional and intra-family, and legitimization centred on amicable sociability. The questions of autonomy/dependence and reproduction/evolution of social and/or sexual roles seem central to explaining why mobile/cell phone usages are becoming commonplace. The study is supported by a qualitative survey based on semi-directive interviews conducted with 20 families of young adolescents (of which 6 single-parent families for a total sample of 51 interviews), an analysis of media discourse, and the utilization of various studies available on the subject

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyze the practices of mobile phone use among young Bulgarians (the generation born after the fall of communism in the country), by using the « soft » interdisciplinary approaches of Cultural Studies. These are practices which are bases not only for restructuring of micro cultures, but also for the appearance of new ones. We assume that mobile phones are changing the traditional conditions and ways of expressing identity, of preserving the integrity of a group of belonging, of building hierarchies and forms of authority. In the first place we present the mobile phone in the perspective of the social imaginary, by summarizing repetitive discourses in the products of mass culture. Afterwards we analyze the interpretations that users themselves give to mobile phones, and the means they exploit to create new kinds of social relationships or to legitimize the existing ones, while taking into consideration certain differences in use related to age, gender and social status. Finally we show that mobile phones encourage a specific form of community, the networked individualism, which promotes an individual able to choose and manage his loyalties and his allegiances at any time and at any place. The mobile phone is the most intimate technology. Its acquisition is considered to be a rite of passage that marks the transition to the communication society and its ideologies of transparence and care, and which contributes also to the « domestication » of the situations that happen

Full textFourth-generation mobile networks, based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, are all- IP networks. Thus, mobile telephony providers are facing new types of quality degradations related to the voice packet transport over IP network such as delay, jitter and packet loss. These factors can heavily degrade voice communications quality. The real-time constraint of such services makes them highly sensitive to delay and loss. Network providers have implemented several network optimizations for voice transport to enhance perceived quality. However, the proprietary quality management algorithms implemented in terminals are left unspecified in the standards. In this context, we are interested in media adaptation mechanisms integrated in terminals to enhance the overall Quality of Experience (QoE). In particular, we experimentally evaluate Voice over LTE (VoLTE) QoE metrics such as delay and Mean Opinion Score (MOS) sing a standardized test method. We propose some enhancements to the actual test method and discuss how this method can be extended to evaluate de-jitter buffer performance. We also experimentally evaluate WebRTC voice quality in different radio conditions using a realLTE test network. We evaluate the impact of jitter buffer and bit rate variations on the measured quality. To enhance voice codec robustness against packet loss, we propose a simple application layer redundancy. We implemented it for the Enhanced Voice Service (EVS) codec and evaluate it. Finally, we propose a signaling protocol that allows sending redundancy requests during a call to dynamically activate or deactivate the redundancy mechanism
Saker, Louai. "Energy consumption reduction mechanisms in mobile networks." Thesis, Evry, Institut national des télécommunications, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011TELE0029.
Full textIn the recent years, more importance has been given to the energy consumption issue in telecommunication networks and mobile operators are rethinking their network design for optimizing its energy efficiency. In this thesis, we propose schemes for optimizing the energy consumption of mobile access networks. We begin by proposing energy-aware Radio Resource Management (RRM) schemes and show that a load balancing between available resources gives some energy savings. However, these gains remain small as a large part of the energy consumption is load-independent. We thus propose sleep mode schemes of resources in the network (cells or carriers) and show that they give a large gain when traffic is low. We then propose optimal sleep mode controllers that give, for each traffic scenario, the best actions to take in each state of the network. We make two observations: the first is that activating a new resource is not instantaneous, leading to QoS degradation if a conservative policy is not considered, and the second is that a ping-pong effect may appear at the frontier between two capacity regions. We adapt our controllers to take into account these imperfections, and show how to derive the optimal policy using Markov decision theory. We then extend our works to the case of small cell deployment in heterogeneous networks, composed of macro and small cells base stations. We study the capacity and power consumption of these networks and show that the energy efficiency is increased for some deployment strategies when the power consumption of small cells is low. We then propose sleep mode for small cells and develop optimal sleep/wakeup schemes based on the information on traffic load and user localization in the cell, in the cases where this information is complete, partial or delayed. We show that these sleep mode schemes achieve large energy consumption gains

Full textThe Internet of Things (loT) is a concept, where a large number of connected devices are communicating together through the same network, constituting an autonomous and intelligent entity. The increasing number of connected devices and IoT services confirms the growing interest for the loT and its applications. To provide connectivity to the devices, several dedicated wireless low power and wide area networks have been created. Recently, with the Release 13, the 3GPP decided to modify the 2G and 4G technologies, to be able to also provide such connectivity for the loT devices, creating the field of Cellular-loT. These evolutions imply a coverage extension compared to the legacy technologies. To obtain this extension, these new standards especially use a blind repetition mechanism. In this context, this thesis studies the performance of several diversity combiners at the receiver, and observes the impact of the temporal evolution of the propagation channel and of imperfections in the receiver. The 2G GSM system is chosen as the application case. Firstly, we consider a receiver without imperfection. Secondly, we consider imperfect frequency synchronization in the receiver. Then, we consider imperfect channel estimation and propose a hybrid combining scheme, obtained by mixing two different combining mechanisms. Finally, in the last part of our study, we carry out a hardware implementation of the system into a software-radio platform. With the theoretical and simulation results provided in this thesis, one can better evaluate the potential of each combining scheme proposed in the framework of loT communications to efficiently benefit from blind repetition mechanisms

Full textThis work considers physical mobilities and wireless telecommunication as a resource, because they help people to construct, organize and adapt livelihoods to the new conditions that may arise. According to Robert Chambers and Gordon Conway (1991), rural livelihoods generally comprise several activities like cultivation, hunting, wage labour, trading, offering services in transport, etc. These activities variously provide food, cash and other goods to satisfy human needs. The activities form a system of places that are used on a regular basis. In case of chocs or opportunity, individuals have to leave certain activities and adopt others that are less exposed to risks and more profitable. In other terms, they arrange differently their living space in the sense that they stop using certain places and start using others. Michel Lussault (2007; 2003) calls “spatiality” the ability of an individual to adjust his geographical position, as well as the position of his activities, in order to meet his proper objectives
