Povzetek Prispevek se refleksije 12. festivala novega cirkusa in sodobne klovnade Klovnbuf loteva skozi prizmo značaja sodobnega cirkusa in njegove izmuzljive lege znotraj sodobnih uprizoritvenih praks. Po kratkem pregledu razvoja, ki sooblikuje današnji kontekst, se analiza uprizoritev osredotoča predvsem na tiste tendence, ki v svoje izvajanje vključujejo kritično mišljenje in raziskovanje lastne forme, sredstva (izurjenega cirkuškega telesa) ter njunih pogojev in s koreografskimi pristopi širijo perspektive tega umetniškega polja. Naslavlja tudi problematiko umestitve sodobnega cirkusa v lokalnem okolju z ozkim krogom akterjev, izvedbeno zahtevnostjo, produkcijsko ranljivostjo in šibkim strokovnim diskurzom.

Abstract:
O estudo da receção da Idade Média nos séculos ulteriores, sobretudo na sua vertente criativa revela imagens do medieval e interrogações sobre o tempo presente. Partindo dos hipotextos medievais, Agustina Bessa-Luís reconfigura a imagem de Leonor Teles através da lente de Lady Macbeth. Na abordagem do conto “D. Leonor Teles”, inserido em Fama e Segredo na História de Portugal (2006), estudam-se as perceções do passado e interroga-se o sentido, as razões e as modalidades dessa presença medieval no imaginário contemporâneo, sendo certo que, como lembra Gómez Redondo (2006, p. 324), “toda pesquisa del pasado se practica para iluminar con ella el presente; no se ponen en pie estos ‘mundos posibles’ por simple ejercicio de arqueología literaria”. Numa perspetiva comparativa e sob o prisma do medievalismo, conclui-se que a autora concilia a atemporalidade com a referencialidade medieval para representar Leonor Teles num “sublime negativo” (Bloom, 1997) em que supera Lady Macbeth.

Abstract:
O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as feições morfológicas e pedogenética dos solos e suas características químicas e físicas na bacia hidrográfica do Médio Curso do Rio Teles Pires (BHMTP). Para isso, foram estudados seis perfis de solo, em trincheiras, ao longo das margens direita e esquerda do Rio Teles Pires, localizados nas Fazenda Encanto da Natureza, Fazenda São José, Rio Teles Pires, Fazenda Estrada do Espanhol, Comunidade Bonfim e Fazenda Vaca Branca. Foram feitas em cada horizonte as análises morfológicas descritivas e posteriormente coletados solos para análises físicas e químicas. Por meio da interpretação das avaliações morfológicas dos perfis, associada aos resultados de análises físico-químicas dos solos, os solos foram classificados até o quarto nível categórico, sendo dois ARGISSOLO VERMELHO-AMARELO Distrófico típico (PVAd), localizados sobre a margem esquerda do rio; dois Latossolos, LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Eutrófico típico (LVe) e LATOSSOLO VERMELHO-AMARELO Distrófico típico (LVAd) localizados à direita do rio; um GLEISSOLO HÁPLICO Tb Distrófico plintossólico (GXbd) localizado à esquerda e um CAMBISSOLO HÁPLICO Tb Distrófico (CXbd) à direita do rio Teles Pires. Em geral, os solos apresentaram texturas médias em todos os perfis. A saturação por Al3+ foi elevada na maioria dos horizontes, refletindo os baixos valores de pH e menores teores de Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ e, consequentemente, menores saturação por bases, exceto o LVe, cuja CTC foi alta. Todos os solos apresentaram média capacidade de troca de cátions (CTC), fato que reflete a mineralogia típica de solos intemperizados.

Abstract:
A new species of penguin tetra, Thayeria tapajonica, is described from the rio Tapajós basin. It is most similar to T. boehlkei by presenting a straight midlateral stripe running anteriorly to immediately posterior to the head, while in T. ifati and T. obliqua the midlateral stripe is restricted to the caudal peduncle, merging with an anterodorsal oblique stripe. The new species is restricted to the rio Tapajós basin downriver of the confluence of the rio Juruena and rio Teles Pires, and lower rio Teles Pires, where its distribution overlaps with T. boehlkei.

Abstract:
V zadnjem času smo priča povečanemu zanimanju za telo v vsakdanjem življenju in v naših vsakdanjih praksah, pa tudi v družboslovnih in humanističnih raziskavah in analizah. Pri tem zagotovo prednjačijo mediji, ki nas zasipavajo s podobami idealnih, zdravih, zagorelih, lepih, vitkih teles, ki so tako rekoč povprečnemu človeku/ženski nedosegljive. Ti isti mediji nas po eni strani posiljujejo z mnogimi dobrotami, recepti, hrano, po drugi pa s podobami vitkih teles, kar skorajda nujno vodi do frustracij ali pa do različnih oblik trpinčenj lastnega telesa. Ta se lahko kažejo v obliki občasnega hujšanja, anoreksije, bulimije, kompulzivnega prenajedanja, ortoreksije, bigoreksije (pretirane fizične aktivnosti) ipd. Če pa to ni učinkovito ali ni zadosti hitro, se je tudi za težave našlo zdravilo – oz. zdravnik – lepotni kirurg, ki nam izreže, zmanjša ali poveča tisto, kar hočemo oz. česar nočemo. Poraslo je tudi zanimanje za zdravo telo – ljudje hočejo, da bi bili videti zdravo, se počutiti zdravo, zato jejo zdravo hrano, se ukvarjajo s športom, skratka skrbijo za svoje telo. Telo je hkrati del posameznika/posameznice, obenem pa je lahko njen/ njegov objekt oz. projekt – če se odločimo, ga bomo oblikovali tako, da bo krepko ali krhko, obilno ali skoraj shirano, lahko si okrepimo/povečamo ali zmanjšamo ta ali oni del, možnosti so stvar naše domišljije in časovno finančnih možnosti. Ta interes je, kot je opozoril že Bourdieu (1984), najbolj prisoten pri t.i. novem srednjem razredu, najverjetneje se je v zadnjem času razširil tudi na druge sloje. Telo pa ne predstavlja le stvar zanimanja posameznikov in posameznic ampak tudi oblasti oz. politike. Če pritrdimo Foucaultu, se je oblast pravzaprav vedno zanimala za telesa svojih podrejenih. Že davno tega so bila telesa predmet nadzorovanja in kaznovanja, telesne kazni so bile prve oblike kaznovanja neubogljivega ljudstva in za razliko od danes so bila ta kaznovanja vsem na ogled in v opozorilo. Zdi se, da oblast/politika teles ni nikoli izpustila iz svojega primeža, le da so se oblike nadzorovanja in kaznovanja spreminjale/spremenile – predvsem najbrž to velja za ženska telesa. Telo je bilo, je in bo predmet zanimanja različnih ved in polj. Čeprav je bilo videti, da si ga je najprej za ekskluzivno polje svojega delovanja privzela medicina, pa se z njim ukvarjajo (je predmet njihovega raziskovanja) tudi druge vede oz. znanstvene discipline od sociologije in antropologije, študijev spola, umetnostne zgodovine, literarne zgodovine in drugih. Večkrat ponovljena modrost, da nimamo svojega telesa, temveč smo telo, je v sodobnem družbosovju in humanistiki postala prežvečena puhlica. In prav zato, ker nas vabi v objem najbolj duhamornega vulgarnomaterialističnega redukcionizma, jo je vredno od časa do časa premisliti. Imeti telo ali biti telo? Frommovska dilema sploh ni na izbiro: človeštva si ni mogoče predstajati v breztelesnem ali bognedaj! raztelešenem stanju. Celotno človeštvo, ki edino ustvarja, posreduje, uporablja in preobrača simbole, skratka “simboli”, če smeva uporabiti glagol, ki si ga je neuspešno zamislil Leslie White, ustvarja neskončne nize neopredmetenih zamisli, a nikakor ne more ustvariti enega samega simbola, torej predmeta, ki omogoča reprezentacijo, tako da ga postavimo na mesto nečesa drugega, ne da bi se za to pomučilo v potu svojega obraza. Še več, največje skrivnosti, kar si jih lahko zamislimo, izhajajo iz nizov telesih drž in sporočil, ki jih prevzemamo od drugih brez simboljenja. Če smo še pred tremi desetletji govorili skorajda samo o strukturah (ne da bi dobro premislili paleto pomenov tega danes skorajda pozabljenega koncepta), pa pred desetletjem in pol o tekstih in njihovem »branju«, si danes ne moremo predstavljati humanistične razprave, ki ne bi umeščala razumevanja človeške sporočilnosti na raven neposrednih človeških dejavnosti. Pri tem v glavnem ne gre za obujanje pragmatizma, ki bi ga spodbujala prevlada anglosaške teoretske misli, niti za slepo sledenje vmes skorajda pozabljenim spoznanjem o telesnem ustroju človeških svetov Merleau-Pontyja, temveč za premik, v katerega nas sili soočanje z dogajanji v resničnem svetu, na katera se moramo ustrezno odzvati kot raziskovalci in raziskovalke. Pričujoči tematski sklop revije Ars et Humnitas prinaša pestro paleto različnih pristopov in prikazov telesa v polju družboslovja in humanistike od teoretskih razprav v okviru post-fenomenološke sociologije telesa, tematiziranja telesa v odnosu do zdravja in plesa, pa vse do razprav o lepotnem idealu telesa v florentinskem slikarstvu, golote in spola v žanru akta ter pomena fotografij (ki predstavljajo zamrznjena telesa), s pomočjo katerih je mogoče odstirati osebne zgodovine.

Este artigo foca os aspetos práticos e os conceitos teóricos do debate sobre o ar respirável e o impacto que tais ideias tiveram na reforma dos espaços públicos, em particular dos cemitérios. As teorias químicas sobre combustão, oxidação e respiração de organismos vivos foram adotadas por Vicente Coelho de Seabra Silva Teles que as aplicou, de forma radical, à projetada reforma dos cemitérios em Portugal, no final do século XVIII. Vicente Coelho de Seabra Silva Teles foi professor de Química da Universidade de Coimbra e escreveu a Memoria sobre os prejuisos causados pelas sepulturas dos cadaveres nos templos, e methodo de os prevenir, publicada pela Casa Literária do Arco do Cego. Neste livro, discutiu as razões científicas da reforma dos cemitérios e aderiu às ideias do movimento europeu cremacionista, favoráveis à destruição física pelo fogo dos cadáveres. A voz crítica de Vicente Coelhode Seabra Silva Teles integrou-se na campanha internacional em prol da secularização das necrópoles e antecipou, com base nos conhecimentos da Química moderna, os fundamentos práticos do movimento cremacionista do séculos XIX.

Abstract:
A quantidade e as distribuições espaciais e temporais das chuvas determinam o tipo de vegetação natural, potencialidades de exploração agropecuária e disponibilidade de recursos hídricos. Todavia, as chuvas estão diretamente relacionadas com a circulação geral da atmosfera (CGA) e com as mudanças nos seus comportamentos. Em escala global, a maior influência é decorrente do modo de variabilidade climático denominado de El Niño-Oscilação Sul (ENOS) e suas diferentes fases/intensidades (El Niño – EN; La Niña - LN), que determinam as anomalias de chuva em diversas regiões. Diante da grande aptidão agropecuária do estado de Mato Grosso (MT), objetivou-se avaliar as influências do EN e LN para as bacias hidrográficas dos Rios Juruena, Teles Pires e Xingu, situados na região Amazônica. As regiões das nascentes (Alto) das três bacias apresentam similaridade nos totais anuais de chuva. As diferentes intensidades de EN e LN influenciaram de forma significativa nos índices de chuva anual na bacia do Rio Teles Pires. EN-Forte provoca reduções nos totais anuais de chuvas nas regiões baixas (foz) das três bacias hidrográficas. LN-Forte aumentou as chuvas anuais independentemente da região do rio Teles Pires. LN-moderado reduz os totais anuais de chuva independentemente da bacia hidrográfica.Palavra-chave: bacias hidrográficas, variabilidade climática, distribuição espacial. ENOS INFLUENCE IN THE ANNUAL RAINS OF THE REGION AMAZON OF MATO GROSSO STATE ABSTRACT:The amount and spatial and temporal distributions of rainfall determine the type of natural vegetation, agricultural exploration potential and availability of water resources. However, the rainfall are directly dependents to the general circulation of the atmosphere and changes in your behavior. On a global scale, the major influences are the result of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its different phases/intensities (El Niño - EN; La Niña - LN), which determine the precipitation anomalies in several regions. Given the large agricultural faculty of Mato Grosso State, Brazil, aimed to evaluate the influence of EN and LN phenomena for the watershed of the rivers Juruena, Teles Pires and Xingu, located in the Amazon region. The regions of the sources of river (High) of the three watershed have similarity in total annual rainfall. The different intensities of EN and LN cause greater influence in the rates of annual rainfall in the Teles Pires Watershed. EN-Intensive causes reductions in total annual rainfall in the lowlands (mouth rivers) of the three watersheds. LN-Intensive provides increase in annual rainfall regardless of the Teles Pires River region. ABSTRACT The upper Teles Pires River basin is located in the Brazilian agriculture frontier in the north of Mato Grosso state and has experienced significant changes in land use and cover, which can cause major changes in its hydrological dynamics. Climatic and hydrologic data are scarce in the region, which poses uncertainties in the decision-making process aiming at the sustainable management of water resources in this strategic area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Large-Scale Distributed Hydrological Model (MGB-IPH) to assess water availability of the upper Teles Pires basin and support water resource management in the Amazon-Cerrado ecotone. The MGB-IPH model was calibrated and validated using data from three streamflow stations available in the basin. In order to verify the model performance, the Nash-Sutcliffe (NS) and the PBIAS statistical parameters were applied. Our results show that, by using the MGB-IPH model with generally available data, the maximum and minimum flow regimes can be successfully assessed in the upper Teles Pires basin. The continuity curves of daily flow simulated by the model showed a good fit with the observed flow. Overall, the results demonstrated the applicability of the MGB-IPH model for water resource assessment and management in the basin.

Abstract A simple method for measuring lactose in milk and milk products by using dialysis is described. A sample of milk, diluted milk powder, cultured buttermilk, or Cheddar cheese whey is dialyzed against water in a test tube at 45°C for 1.5 h. Lactose from the product is extracted into the water and Teles reagent is added. Absorbance was converted to percent lactose using a standard curve. Lactose obtained by the dialysis method was comparable to results obtained by the ultraviolet enzymatic and infrared methods. The method was not suitable for yogurt, which contains galactose that reacts with the Teles reagent. The new method for lactose measurement is simple and does not require precipitation of proteins, filtration, or centrifugation.

The new species is diagnosed based on dental formula 3/4, a dark midlateral stripe on body and a series of transversal dark bars on the dorsum. The new species is similar to a handful of congeners based on the color pattern, including L. britski, L. microphysus, L. parvulus, and L. vanzoi, all of which also occur at the rio Tapajós basin. The new species is distinguished from the aforementioned congeners based on number of premaxillary teeth, number of scales in lateral line and/or around caudal peduncle. The new species is apparently endemic to the rio Teles Pires near the Sete Quedas rapids and upstream.

This paper assesses the Taipei's fire rescue capability against post-earthquake fires (PEFs) from a hypothetical earthquake. Taiwan's Shanchiao Fault was used as the trigger fault for establishing earthquake modeling assumptions. Monte Carlo simulation was used with hypocenter coordinates, the Richter magnitude scale, and earthquake focal depths as the uncertainty analysis variables for performing stochastic simulations of 100 sets of seismic event parameters. These parameters were entered into the Simple Earthquake Seismic System (SESS) and the Taiwan Earthquake Loss Estimation System (TELES) to conduct uncertainty analysis regarding PEFs. PEFs were simulated and the disaster readiness of all firefighting squads (strongholds) in Taipei was investigated to analyze the uncertainty in PEF rescues. The SESS analysis results indicate that the original risk probability was 25.26%, increasing to 45.88% with the activation of a regional mutual aid system. The original risk calculated by the TELES was 52.97%, which increased to 96.22% of the overall disaster response capacity requirements after the regional mutual aid system was launched. Although the SESS results remained below the 60% risk threshold following the launch of the regional mutual aid system, the rescue capacity was substantially increased. The TELES analysis results indicate that the regional mutual aid system can substantially increase local disaster rescue capacity, nearly satisfying all disaster resource scheduling requirements. The location, scale, and pattern of earthquakes and the resulting casualties are always uncertain. However, the results of this study verify that the 2 independently developed earthquake damage estimation systems can provide an effective reference for post-earthquake rescue scheduling assessments.

O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a relação chuva-cota-vazão para a bacia do rio Tapajós e sua relação com os sistemas climáticos que influenciam no seu comportamento. Utilizou-se as médias mensais dos dados fluviométricos do acervo hidroclimatológico da Agência Nacional de Águas e dados mensais de precipitação do período de 1981 à 2010 provenientes do GPCC (Global Precipitation Climatology Center). As médias de precipitação variaram entre 1474 mm até 2512 mm, onde as cabeceiras da bacia hidrográfica do rio Tapajós apresentam os menores valores e a região central da bacia os maiores valores de precipitação. A sub bacia hidrográfica que mais contribui para a vazão no rio Tapajós é a sub bacia do rio Juruena, com uma vazão anual média de 4655 m³/s. A sub bacia do rio Teles Pires tem uma contribuição anual média de 3667 m³/s. A contribuição destes afluentes e outros afluentes do Médio Baixo Tapajós, totalizam na estação fluviométrica de Itaituba a vazão anual média de 12259 m3 /s. Os dados de cota fluviométrica mostram que os maiores valores estão na foz do rio Teles Pires (700 cm/ano), seguido da foz do rio Juruena (623 cm/ano) e do rio Tapajós na estação de Itaituba (545 cm/ano).

Hydroelectric dams are a major threat to rivers in the Amazon. They are known to decrease river connectivity, alter aquatic habitats, and emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Multiscale remotely sensed data can be used to assess and monitor hydroelectric dams over time. We analyzed the Sinop dam on the Teles Pires river from high spatial resolution satellite imagery to determine the extent of land cover inundated by its reservoir, and subsequent methane emissions from TROPOMI S-5P data. For two case study areas, we generated 3D reconstructions of important endemic fish habitats from unmanned aerial vehicle photographs. We found the reservoir flooded 189 km2 (low water) to 215 km2 (high water) beyond the extent of the Teles Pires river, with 13–30 m tall forest (131.4 Mg/ha average AGB) the predominant flooded class. We further found the reservoir to be a source of methane enhancement in the region. The 3D model showed the shallow habitat had high complexity important for ichthyofauna diversity. The distinctive habitats of rheophile fishes, and of the unique species assemblage found in the tributaries have been permanently modified following inundation. Lastly, we illustrate immersive visualization options for both the satellite imagery and 3D products.

The inefficiency of Brazil’s logistics system to handle the outflow of farm products impairs the sector’s performance. From the economic perspective, the high freight rates put the country’s agricultural sector at a competitive disadvantage in the global market. Besides this, the reliance on highway transport causes problems of an environmental (high CO 2 emissions) and social nature (large occurrence of accidents). As an alternative to this dependence, Brazil has an extensive network of actually and potentially navigable rivers that could serve as a key element to improve the performance of the agricultural sector. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the possible influence of the Tapajós-Teles Pires Waterway on the sustainable performance of 19 Brazilian soybean export routes, using data envelopment analysis (DEA). Of these, only three would use the Tapajós-Teles Pires Waterway, which is not yet in operation. The origins of the routes are four soybean-producing centers located in Mato Grosso, the Brazilian state that produces the most soybeans, destined for 12 seaports. The inputs considered are Accident Cost and CO2 Emissions, while the output is Cargo Carried per US$. For this, we use the DEA-VRS (Variable Return Scale) input-oriented model. The results obtained from the DEA model revealed satisfactory performance of the routes using the Tapajós-Teles Pires Waterway from three of the four production centers. In Campo Novo do Parecis, some 16% (471 km) of the route is composed of highways and the rest of the waterway (84%, 1576 km). In Sorriso, only 3% (85 km) of the route consists of highways, while waterway transport is responsible for 97% (2388 km), and in Querência, 24.55% of the route to the Port of Barcarena consists of highways. The use of these routes and the combination of the two transport modes presented the best efficiency indexes, making development of the waterway a key element to improve the outflow of soybeans for export. The results of this study may help Brazilian authorities to define public policies and apply resources to improve the deficiencies of the transportation system, which can lead to a better balance of the Brazilian transportation matrix.

Two new species of Jupiaba Zanata are described from Brazil. Jupiaba iasy, new species, is described from rio Teles Pires and rio Jamanxim, tributaries of rio Tapajós, and from rio Aripuanã, in the rio Madeira drainage. It is distinguished from its congeners by its color pattern consisting of a single posteriorly displaced dark crescent-shaped humeral blotch, situated over the first 5 to 7 lateral line scales, and an inconspicuous dark spot at the end of caudal peduncle. It also differs from all remaining Jupiaba for the following combination of characters: 34-36 lateral line scales, 19–21 branched anal-fin rays, 8–10 predorsal scales arranged in a regular row, 6 horizontal series of scales above and 4 series below lateral line, body depth 32.3–36.1% of SL, and absence of filamentous rays in the first dorsal and anal-fin rays. Jupiaba paranatinga, new species, is described from rio Teles Pires, tributary of rio Tapajós. It is distinguished by having 34–35 lateral line scales, two vertically elongated humeral blotches, a conspicuous caudal spot at the end of the caudal peduncle, extending over 8–10 median caudal-fin rays, eye diameter 43.7–46.9% of HL, and relatively low body depth (31.3–35.5% of SL). Additionally, comments on the putative relationships of the new species with their congeners and an updated key to the species of the genus are provided.

A new species of characid fish, Hyphessobrycon scutulatus, is described from the rio Teles Pires drainage, upper rio Tapajós system. The new species is distinct from all Hyphessobrycon species by the following characters: inner row premaxillary teeth 7 or 8, all tricuspid; maxilla with 5 to 9 tricuspid teeth; horizontal lateral body stripe or humeral mark absent; and a spot centered on the basal portion of the median caudal-fin rays sometimes extends to the distal portions of those rays.

Abstract:
O Batólito Granítico Universal ocorre a noroeste da cidade de Apiacás, região norte-noroeste do estado do Mato Grosso e constitui o principal corpo granítico pós-orogênico não deformado da Suíte Teles Pires do Domínio Juruena da Província Rondônia-Juruena. O batólito apresenta forma semicircular e encontra-se intrusivo em rochas granitóides deformadas das suítes Colíder, Intrusiva Juruena, Paranaíta e Granito Apiacás. É constituído principalmente por rochas plutônicas caracterizadas dominantemente por sieno- a monzogranitos, porfiríticos, rapakivis ou não, isotrópicos a localmente foliados, coloração rósea a vermelha e como máficos, biotita e hornblenda. As rochas apresentam altos teores de SiO2, K2O e Na2O, peraluminosas a metaluminosas e definem um magmatismo da série cálcio-alcalina alto potássio a shoshonítico. São granitoides do Tipo I Caledoniano de ambiente tardios extensionais, altamente diferenciados, similares geoquimicamente aos granitos do Tipo A intraplaca anorogênico. O comportamento de ETR evidencia dois padrões de distribuição similares e simétricos, com anomalia negativa em Eu e enriquecimento de ETR para as fácies mais diferenciadas, o que sugere um processo de fracionamento magmático. Este magmatismo rapakivi registra o estágio final de um ambiente extensional tardi-orogênico a anorogênico e compõe a arquitetura tardia do Arco Magmático Juruena na estabilização destas áreas continentais cratônicas.

This essay reviews two recent works in political science on the American conservative legal movement: Steven M. Teles's The Rise of the Conservative Legal Movement: The Battle for Control of the Law (2008) and Ann Southworth's Lawyers of the Right: Professionalizing the Conservative Coalition (2008). It examines these books in the context of a larger debate over the variables that best explain constitutional change in general and the recent “conservative counterrevolution” in Supreme Court jurisprudence in particular. It shows how these studies build on the scholarship of Charles Epp, who argued in The Rights Revolution (1998) that serious constitutional change requires not only the right cast of characters on the court, but also a strong “support structure” in the legal profession and civil society. Finally, it draws on the author's own research on the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy to illustrate some important avenues for further inquiry.

ABSTRACT The upper Teles Pires River basin is a key hydrological resource for the state of Mato Grosso, but has suffered rapid land use and cover change. The basin includes areas of Cerrado biome, as well as transitional areas between the Amazon and Cerrado vegetation types, with intensive large-scale agriculture widely-spread throughout the region. The objective of this study was to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics of land use and cover change from 1986 to 2014 in the upper Teles Pires basin using remote sensing and GIS techniques. TM (Thematic Mapper) and TIRS (Thermal Infrared Sensor) sensor images aboard the Landsat 5 and Landsat 8, respectively, were employed for supervised classification using the “Classification Workflow” in ENVI 5.0. To evaluate classification accuracy, an error matrix was generated, and the Kappa, overall accuracy, errors of omission and commission, user accuracy and producer accuracy indexes calculated. The classes showing greatest variation across the study period were “Agriculture” and “Rainforest”. Results indicated that deforested areas are often replaced by pasture and then by agriculture, while direct conversion of forest to agriculture occured less frequently. The indices with satisfactory accuracy levels included the Kappa and Global indices, which showed accuracy levels above 80% for all study years. In addition, the producer and user accuracy indices ranged from 59-100% and 68-100%, while the errors of omission and commission ranged from 0-32% and 0-40.6%, respectively.
