Abstract:
From the perspective of analytic philosophical aesthetics, this paper disputes the commonplace practice of referring to television as a ‘medium’. It proposes instead that television be regarded as an art composed of many media. Individual works employ various media available to television and also to other arts. The paper evaluates the usefulness of these distinctions for our conceptual understanding of television, appraisal of television works and appreciation of television in relation to other arts. Via its reconfiguration of ‘medium/media’, it challenges narrowly contemporary notions of the televisual, positing a more historicised model and situating television alongside other arts — amongst friends.

Abstract:
Abstract Finnish television was launched by a commercial company in 1956. TES-TV, the first television station, was later followed by a programming company called Tesvisio and joined by the television channel of YLE, the Finnish Broadcasting Company. The TES-TV/Tesvisio years are a unique period in television history, since they witnessed the creation of a connection between commercial television and the arts. In this article I aim to study early Finnish television aesthetics by analyzing television as art and also the relations between television and other art forms. My focus is on the representations of high and low culture and the search for a television style. TES-TV aired both popular programmes and high culture, like ballet, while on Tesvisio, these cultural extremities were gradually replaced by a middle-brow culture. The early programming included both filmed and live material, which had a contribution to the evolution of Finnish television aesthetics. The television style was further developed by Tesvisio’s first professional set designer and his experimental work. Therefore I claim that in these commercial companies television was seen as an art form in its own right, not only as a mediator of art

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis explores convergent television-related consumer practices of teenagers by mapping factors which potentially orient fruition patterns. The myth of “digital natives” as more skilled and resourceful than their parents does not suffice: it is necessary to study actual cross-platform experiences by contextualizing them within the sets of affordances and limitations (cultural, social and contextual) which structure the daily lives of teenagers. The centrality assigned to the many factors shaping convergent consumptions has driven the analysis towards the definition of a situational multi-factor interpretative view able to interpret the contingent and ephemeral nature of the balances underpinning convergent consumption experiences.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the processes of perception and cognition and demonstrates their application to the creation of aesthetically and artistically significant television content. By reexamining past understandings and assumptions, the ways in which artists and media producers have manipulated the information search and processing faculties of their audiences, and thus guided the meanings they ascribed to still and moving images, are explored. To reflect the multidisciplinary nature of television aesthetics, this research is not limited to a particular academic discipline. Instead, it draws on several streams of research and scholarship (media studies, marketing, psychology, neuroscience, and the fine arts) to bridge the gap between scientific theory and artistic practice and, in turn, develop effective guidelines for the construction of audiovisual materials that fulfill all three functions of the arts: the intensification, clarification, and interpretation of experience.

Cardinaletti, Michelangelo. "Ugo Gregoretti, autore e regista televisione : television, cinema, opera lirica e teatro." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Nantes Université, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023NANU2029.

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis represents an in- depth and comprehensive investigation into Ugo Gregoretti's extensive and diverse career in the fields of television, film, opera, and theater. Through a biographical approach and extensive use of sources from the Ugo Gregoretti Study Center in Pontelandolfo, this research sheds light on the life and works of an eclectic artist whose significance has been largely overlooked. The findings of the analysis reveal an artistically multifaceted profile, characterized by a deep sensitivity to irony and a marked inclination to express his artistic vision through a variety of media. Gregoretti emerges as an author with extraordinary versatility, capable of spanning different genres and modes of expression while maintaining consistent originality in each of his works. A fundamental aspect of the research is the absence of in-depth studies dedicated to Gregoretti, despite his significant impact on the Italian artistic and cultural landscape. This thesis fills this gap, providing a comprehensive analysis of his career and his contribution to the development of art and entertainment in Italy. In this way, the research not only unveils a neglected figure but also sheds new light on the cultural and artistic dynamics of the country, enriching the overall understanding of its evolution

Abstract:
This dissertation is aimed to outline a cultural history of early Italian television, focusing on the pattern by which TV became part of its first audience’s daily routines, and trying to give sense of how the first public of the small screen experienced the arrival of the television in the space of their homes, in the years of institutionalisation of the new medium (1954-1960). After an overview of the scientific literature that has dealt with the topic of “media domestication”, cultural biography of technical objects, and historical analysis of television’s culture of viewing, the second section of the thesis examines how the system of popular media (mainly advertising, popular press, and broadcaster’s house organs) ascribed meanings to television as a domestic medium and advised its public how to use it. A third section of the dissertation is devoted to understanding the television viewing and consumption in historical perspective, through a ethnographic research developed with twenty in-depth interviews to witnesses that participated directly in the first diffusion and domestication of the TV sets in Italy.

Abstract:
The present study maps and condenses the history of the relationships between art and television during the rough half century in which television maintained its position as society’s quintessential mass medium, from the 1950s to the turn of the millennium, through to the phase of vaporization of media recently brought by the profusion of digital technologies and the Internet. The close to one hundred artists discussed belong to different generations, from 1960s pioneers such as Nam June Paik, Andy Warhol and various guerrilla television collectives to postmodernist figures such as Dara Birnbaum and General Idea, from artists emerged in the 1990s such as Phil Collins, Christian Jankowski, and Matthieu Laurette up to figures emerged in in this early XXI century such as Keren Cytter, Hito Steyerl, Ryan Trecartin, and the Yes Men.The works discussed are videos, installations, performances, interventions and television programs conceived as forms of resistance, appropriation and parody of mainstream television, that expose the mechanisms through which the mass medium influences our perception of both reality and ourselves. To be targeted are the most popular television genres and formats including news, commercials, soap operas, talk shows, children's programs, music videos, reality shows, edutainment, and TV series. By allowing to “see at distance,” television produces in the viewer an uncanny feeling of physical displacement. What the works discussed highlight and try to overcome, is that split between factual and televised bodies, that is also a split between reality and representation

Abstract:
Main objectives of this article are changes in the programming principles of the “Suspilne Culture” TV channel, the peculiarities of the program content in the period 2020-2022, as well as potential for further channel development from the content perspective. Methodology of the analysis includes processing primary sources of information, synthesis, induction and deduction, problem-thematic analysis of television programs. Results. During 2017-2021, the specialized public channel about culture increased the number of its own programs, and the ratings of the channel increased. “UA: Culture” produced their own daily information program and several analytical programs about various types of art. Although even now, a significant part of the channel content consists of not relevant and not adapted for the Ukrainian audience purchased serials and educational cycles. After analyzing “Suspilne Culture” TV channel program grid for October 3-7, 2022, significant part of not typical for declared program policy content was discovered. During the present period only 2 programs corresponded to the specifics of the channel and were developed by “Suspilne” production. Conclusions. In general, thematic blocks such as cultural policy of Ukraine and institutions, religious practices, economy of creative industries and representation of Ukrainian culture in the world are not broadcasted. Significance. The conducted research allowed us to actualize the need for a scientific approach to the content and programming policy of the “Suspilne Culture” TV channel. The collected material gives reasons to testify that the mission of the public channel and the declared program principles are implemented only partially. The channel lacks in-depth analytics on a whole range of current cultural issues. The share of self-produced programs is minimal. Instead, purchased content often does not represent the specifics of the channel and does not fulfill the mission of the public broadcaster. The channel program managers should focus on the change in cultural discourse that has been taking place since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. In battles, our army and people defend, first of all, our right to own identity, our right on culture and own voice to tell the world about ourselves. The air of the TV channel “Suspilne Culture” should be filled with exactly such ideas. Keywords: culture; public television; television content; journalism of the culture.

Kominiarska, Lіudmyla, and Olga Blashkiv. REFORMING THE CONTENT OF REGIONAL BRANCHES OF PUBLIC TELEVISION DURING THE FULL-SCALE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2024.54-55.12147.

Full text
Abstract:
The article conducts an analysis of the content of regional Public Television during the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. A comparative analysis of programs created by regional teams of the Public broadcaster before the full-scale invasion is presented. The research aims to study and provide a detailed analysis of the television content of regional branches of Public Television to understand the peculiarities of operation during a state of war, track changes in the thematic content, and speech format. Analytical methods of scientific research (analysis of television content of regional branches of Public Television), as well as inductive, deductive, and abstract-logical methods, are employed. The historical method is applied to the study of television reform in Ukraine. The key method in the research is content analysis, which is used to study the impact of television reform on the quality and volume of content of regional branches of Public Television. Using the example of the content of “Suspilne-Ternopil,” the thematic and problematic content of programs of the regional branch of Public Television is investigated. A significant reduction in the share of in-house produced content on local issues is identified. In particular, at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the production of the program “Today. Main” was suspended, a socio-political talk show that extensively covered local issues. Emphasis is placed on the importance of regional media in times of war, representing the interests of the public at both regional and central levels. In our opinion, regional broadcasters of Public Television should reintroduce in-house produced programs to restore a platform for discussing local issues. Strengthening ties with high-quality media from neighboring states is also advisable, specifically for the exchange of journalists’ experiences and high-quality content. Keywords: Public television, television reform, Russian-Ukrainian war, television content, broadcast, regional branch.

Abstract:
The article examines the peculiarities of the regional media and the specifics of creating the content of the TV channel’s social networks. The prerequisites for the need to distribute TV content in modern forms of the virtual environment are provided. Ukraine is actively implementing digital technologies in television, which leads to the improvement of the quality and diversity of local media, as a result of which regional television becomes more flexible, interactive and adaptive to changes in consumer preferences and technological capabilities. The growing popularity of social media is being integrated into regional television strategies for audience engagement, engagement and rapid response to events. Regional TV channels increasingly use social networks to interact with viewers, publish news and ensure rapid dissemination of information. The process of adaptation of television content of the information and television agency «VITA» to social networks has been studied. Abstract:
The article highlights and analyzes the factors influencing the activities of television editorial teams in the period of new political, economic and security circumstances. It is noted that all-Ukrainian influential television channels, which have the highest popularity and high ratings, are oligarchic media with a high level of political involvement. Ukrainian television is widely practicing to narrow the thematic range of programs, reports and programs resulting in unjustified dominance in the television space of entertainment and humorous genres, «ravel journalism», excessive overweight of foreign programs and of obsolete quality film production. In the news programs, some TV companies, including 1 + 1, widely emphasize negative issues that are not typical of Ukrainian society, which often has a petty, urban and secondary status. Instead, a wide range of real, socially important, topical issues and problems remain out of the professional attention of journalists, analysts and experts. Guided only by the criterion of rating programs, programs, stories, topics and problems, TVs lose the most active segment among the audience – critical thinking, knowledgeable, erudite recipient, who, choosing an information resource, increasingly prefers the internet journalism.

Chong, Alberto E., and Eliana La Ferrara. Television and Divorce: Evidence from Brazilian Novelas. Inter-American Development Bank, January 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010906.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper studies the link between television and divorce in Brazil by exploiting variation in the timing of availability of the signal of Rede Globo -the network that had a virtual monopoly on telenovelas in the countryacross municipal areas. Using three rounds of Census data (1970, 1980 and 1991) and controlling for area fixed effects and for time-varying characteristics, the paper finds that the share of women who are separated or divorced increases significantly after the Globo signal becomes available. The effect is robust to controlling for potential determinants of Globos entry strategy and is stronger for relatively smaller areas, where the signal reaches a higher fraction of the population.

Willis, Craig. ECMI Minorities Blog. Minority Language Media and TikTok: Are Broadcasters Showing They Are Still Relevant for Younger Audiences? European Centre for Minority Issues, June 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.53779/qlmm1477.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst younger audiences move away from traditional forms of media consumption, public broadcasters – including those in minority languages – have long been facing declining viewing figures in terms of linear television. At the same time, social media consumption habits are diverging along a generational gap – younger audiences favour TikTok and Instagram over Facebook or Twitter. This blogpost sheds light on one element of this, analysing the attempts of institutional actors – in this case minority language broadcasters – to reach different audience segments by creating content directly through TikTok. Concentrated focus is placed on the Welsh language broadcaster S4C, the Galician language broadcaster TVG and the Catalan language broadcaster TV3, with the conclusions pointing towards greater levels of success for their sub-brands which adopt a less-formal, non-institutionalised approach. The positive examples suggest minority language media are finding ways to adapt to contemporary challenges and that their role for younger generations was perhaps neglected too soon by some critics.

Abstract:
Main objectives of the study are the phenomenological tools of the effectiveness of deviatological control of the influence of television text on the formation of emotional tone of society. Particular attention is paid to the additional emotional meanings that arise when speaking live due to lack of time to understand them. Because of this, emotional nuances, and often the emotional background in general, arise involuntarily, against the wishes of the author. Emphasis is placed on making appropriate recommendations to TV journalists. During the Russian aggression in the Ukrainian media, the responsibility for maintaining the proper emotional tone of society is growing. Television plays an important role in Ukraine in this regard. Deviatological control of society is weakened, so more attention should be paid to professional organizations. Since we are talking about the effectiveness of deviatological control of the influence of television text on the formation of emotional tone of society, we must first keep in mind the phenomenological tools of this influence. Recently, phenomenological tools have been used more and more often during the analysis of journalistic texts in terms of the effectiveness of their impact on the mass audience. The methods of phenomenology prove to be the most effective when it comes to various aspects of spontaneous speech, which is represented in the mass media by live television broadcasting. Additional emotional meanings arise when speaking live because of the lack of time to understand them. Because of this, emotional nuances, and often in general the emotional background, which consists, at first glance, it is unknown what, arises involuntarily, against the wishes of the author. Most often, so involuntarily and contrary to out of nowhere negative color and negative emotional background. Thus, it is not a question of creating a positive emotional background in society. Even more, it is not even about an emotionally neutral perception of reality with elements of objectivity. Everything is extremely bad in our house and in the world. Results/findings and conclusions of my research: in order to improve live broadcasting, such application of phenomenological methods in the evaluation of the text from a deviatological point of view should take place at an early stage, and may precede it (the text) utterance. Key words: television, live broadcast, TV journalist, broadcast of television journalists, phenomenological tools, deviatological control, emotional tone of society.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on fertility choices in Brazil, a country where soap operas (novelas) portray families that are much smaller than in reality, to study the effects of television on individual behavior. Using Census data for the period 1970-1991, the paper finds that women living in areas covered by the Globo signal have significantly lower fertility. The effect is strongest for women of lower socioeconomic status and for women in the central and late phases of their fertility cycle. Finally, the paper provides evidence that novelas, rather than television in general, affected individual choices.
