Full textThe purpose of this study is to understand the nature of the relation between individuals and mass television. We show that television's success with widespread audience is based on the "connivance" between television programs that integrate the uncertainties and tensions of the social experience felt by its wide audeince, and socially dominated individuals who find in this programs a cultural field of subjectivity. The first part of the study presents an analysis that goes beyond the gap, recurrent in media sociology, between theories of alienation througt cultural industries and theories of audience gratification. The second part is devoted to an empirical observation of the making of successful programs, and to a reception analysis with seven socially differentiated groups. We show that individuals never dissociated their relation to television from the larger framework of their social experience. The third part aims at determining the political dimension of individual relation to television. We show, through a case study

Full textThe introduction places the television in the context of post-industrial society which is dominated by the generalized circulation of signs (with exchange values dominant, a society of spectacle). Semiological analysis attempts to organize the normalities of the screen with respect to signifiants and signifies. Five models can thus be defined : current events, documentaries, shows, fiction and advertisements. The initial sample survey involved direct contact with television viewers (in contrast with public opinion polls) in nondirective interviews with a small number of persons (13) to discuss an evening's television viewing (tuesday october 20, 1981). The hypotheses distinguish an individual component (television nutures), a social reference component (television confirms), and a social power component (television controls). The survey systematized these hypotheses based on another evening of television vie wieng (saturday apris 17, 1982 middle and high social strata). Television viewing cannot merely to social processes nor to individual psychological processes. The relationship between explicit and implicit discourse, the concept of social status underline this point. The television viewer seeks ideal and imaginary images allowing him to visualize his own problematics (individual social) and to integrate himself in the social conformities legitimated by the screen. 5)the final chapter (hypothesis testing) specifies and synthesizes the three components of television : the "nurturing television" defines the domain of the affects set in motion by the screen through "punctums", ideal objects, pleasurable shows, and contemplation of the television set. The "confirming television" shifts from symbolic and community aspirations towards recognition, integration, illustration of fields of knowledge acquired prior to viewing (desire to see). The "controlling television" defines a shift from specific rites to uniform rites and the acceptance of personal models. Public matters become private ones and private affairs become public ones, reinforcing the hypothesis of generalized exchange value

Full textThe thesis deals with the problematical of the socio-spacial marginality whose manifestations are indissociable from the global crisis that knows algeria. The thesis devided into three great parts: genesis of the not regulated habitat population, spaces and migrations. Territories, strategies and adjustment. The first part tempts to replace the phenomenon in a global context. The historical detour allows to notice the process of the colonization and decolonization, the passage from the tradition to the modernity, the instability phases, where plays the social decomposition recomposition and the need to renew with the identity. The second part leans on an inquiry by questionnaires led in 15 "douars" from cities of different size and different functions and belonging to a varity of bioclimatical milieus (coast, internal tell and sharian area). The analysis concerns structures and demographic behaviors as indicators from the demographic transition and the insertion of families by means of the urban work. The third part is built on studies of the case in functions of territories produced : the placement in obviousness of the popular strategy confrontation and those of public authorities in the framework of an operation of resorption of the precarious habitat (operation rhp). This confrontation ends to ambivalent territories. The utilization of a religious fact to oppose to it in order to request a fundamental regularizations and the primary equipment while the zone (douar chmirik in relizane) is reputed harmful for residents (high tension line and passage of a pipeline). The anticipated sale to escape fundamental reserves in the case of belkhadem at mecheria, illustrates it well cleavages between the customary mode (tradition) and the application of regulations of town planning (introduction of the modernity). It is the case of the douars fed by ancient nomadic breeders, where one reconstitutes manners to reside and to live the steppe. This popular habitat, increasingly important, develops by rupture with regulations on the town planning, giving free run to sociocultural references and to the collective and individual memory. It is in the precariousness that the solidarity is reinforced

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to show the stakes of the communication-processes of Korean dramas, broadcasted on televisions, in the peculiar situation where the Confucianism needs to be readjusted in our modern world. This thesis sets down the hypothesis that this process is a deliberate intention of the government to intervene within the identity of the Korean communities, in order to eventually modify their identity in the future : the Korean dramas are adapted mirror images of the social daily life and, therefore, participate to the construction of the ‘social reality’. In the second part of the XX century, the Korean identity has drastically changed owing to the influences of the industrialization and the westernization of the population. A new identity is being developed, breaking-off of Confucianism ideology. This thesis is divided in two parts. The first part is devoted to the two fundamental aspects that explain the Korean mentality. On the one hand, we identify the Confucianism as a moral, a religion and ideology for the Korean people. On the other hand, we examine the Korean dramas in general broadcasted on TV with the aim of establishing their status in the Korean TV in general. In the second part of the thesis, we study in detail the Korean dramas using the argumentation-theory in order to prove that the TV broadcasted Korean dramas constitute a broad investigation-field allowing the knowledge of the Korean Society

Full textSince its accession to the national independence (1962), algeria is as ballotated between divergent identity temptations nourished by contradictory ideological tendencies which are in constant confliects when they are not mutually neutralized. While these ideological conflicts (conflictual values) create identity confusion in the collective subjectivities due to contradictory prescriptions of two cultures in competition (social biculturalism). The official recognition of the industrial culture as a mean towards development and social progress, is insidiously shakled by a whole set of values belonging to the ancient culture in ordor to block or at least to delay the intented development. Beside this general problem which studies the consequences of the acculturation both from psychosociological and clinical points of view, we wanted to study thoroughly the cultural representations which are held by youth regarding the mariage in the light of the different conflicts that are generated by contradictory values to the extend of laceration sometimes. Four investigations with different methodological orientations were undertaken in ordor to identify and to understand the psychosociological process as related to identity formation in a complicated of social change

Full textSince 1974, there have been four presidential debates on television during the second tour of presidential elections. This research focuses on the social and communication phenomenon that this broadcast represents. The author examines the organisation conditions of each broadcast within the political and televisual context of the Vth Republic. He observes that former research carried out on these programmes is very widely conditioned by the "broadcast-reception" model used in information & communication science. On the basis of thinking about the epistemological aspects of his approach, the author proposes to approach the object using systemic and semio-contextual modeling, whose theoretical principles are outlined. The selected method considers each debate as a case study. A synthesis of these studies reveals the ritual dimension which governs the organisation and development of each broadcast. As with a cumulative process, each broadcast can be understood as being the expression of a single artefact, enabling the actors to construct and give a ritual sense to the generalised communication situation which unites them

Full textWith the proliferation of digital broadcasting methods, the TV industry has started to investigate productivity methods in order to face growing competition. The end of life cycle of analogue devices, along with the technical advances in the IT field, is forcing the implementation of digital technology in the TV industry. A greater specialisation in technical roles, the diversity of editorial roles, and staff reductions within reporting teams are the main changes observed following computerisation in the industry. The aim of this thesis is to highlight, with the help of a number of practical examples, the issues encountered in the French TV industry's move to digital. It also aims to suggest possible solutions to organisational changes, and to research relevant developments in the IT field

Full textNowadays, the evolution of different means of communication seams to accelerate because of the development of new technologies which are changing the uses of media. The topical debate in the field of communication, that concerns the changes of using, may be due to the technological innovation. The main discussion arises different theories. Most of them are based on a specific view of the relations between the users and the media. In my point of view, it is necessary, for those searchers, to relativize the media impact and the changes in the behaviour of the users. It is also important to enhance the simultaneous action of the audience and the environment. Moreover, the complementarity between the mass media and the specific media must be taken into account. According to this point of view, i noticed, especally in the television field, that different factors tend to influence people to accept those new technologies. The comparative method, between the technological uses of the cable and the satellite in france and quebec, enhance cultural features. However, it reveals other unexpected events. Indeed, the subscribers to the cable or the satellite still use the traditional media but they complete it with specific technologies. Finaly, this research clearly shows that some sociodemographic factors, especally sex and age, have a significant influence on means of communication

Full textConsidering the sociolinguistic, the sociohistorical and the editorial data in which the Amazigh claim has developed so far, we note that among three existing graphic types using Tifinagh, Arabic or Latin characters, it is the latter type which bears the highest probabilities to become the mode of writing Kabyle (numerically the most widely spoken variety of Amazigh). A praxematic analysis of the verbalization co-produced around this question and conducted with teachers of Amazigh in Kabylia reveals an important fact: that the teachers use exclusively the Latin graphic style which is increasingly perceived as an internalized grammaticalization practice concerning Kabyle. This adhesion is mostly due to the fact that the production of most literature and didactic tools in existing in Amazigh is done with the use of Latin characters

The study further explores the changes in the areas which fall under the sway of reformist movement. For example, we wanted to question issue of Kabyle éducation in the first half of 20th Century. In this repect, the first thirteen chapters have been extended to two others chapters. These two chapters highlith the political struggles and Identity protest in Kabylia and focus on the intellectual and cultural elites who led them in the period between 1940 and 2001. This additional part is tightly linked to the other chapters as it extends the bounds between local and global issues, involving the crisis of modernity and the effects of modernization, and last, the nature of relationship between individual and his own self. Beside, we wanted to raise and treat the issue of social and political mediations starting from the analyis of recent and recurring protests in Kabylia

Full textThe nineties more than the previous decades have raised a number of issues about the validity of social interventions as well as the professional ability of the common socials contributors. The latter are nowadays directly implicated or even challenged and considered less and less capable of handling social issues on their own. Presently, they are challenged by different kinds of other professional or voluntary workers who may as well feel concerned hy the social actualities. Thus, it appears that in this new context characterizing the definition of social issues and essential solidarity, the roles and functions belonging to the field of information, communication and promotion through the media, seem to play a part that becomes more and more important. They do not really give more means designed to insert, or look after the disabled or people suffering from maladjustment or any other form of exclusion. However, other means and especially another visibility in the public field will influence the existence and working conditions of several professional groups. The main objective of our research work is to describe the various mechanisms through which social intervention collects, from the medias, the items that will be involved in its construction or reconstruction. We also want to show how these medias take advantage of such elements in order to achieve their own construction. This means studying : first, what can nowadays be promoted by the medias in terms of common social interventions (me social mediatical work), and secondly, the part of social action which can be attributed to the medias and specially television (the social work of the medias). A better understanding of the co-constructions prompted or carried out by the interdependent and joint action of these two professional activities, leads us to observe and analyse the changes in the arrangement and layout, within the public domain, of the respective professional situations and identities but also in the cast and understanding of the role of both types of contributors. The transformations which are in progress in each one of the previous fields already appear to be as many elements of a same global procedure of professionalisation, and seen another way, what we call deprofessionalisation, and this therefore contributes to setting out a new production in the field of social reality

Full textTo what extent and by what means reality TV leads to overcoming traditional television? This is the key idea which presides over our analysis of socio-economic progress in the operation of television and cultural industries in general, highlighting their arrangement in the socio-economics of the reality TV. This research attempts to provide an explanation to this socio-economic excess through crisis of a traditional television; a crisis that may lead to a disparity between every increasing expenses and less important revenues of television channels. At the same time, this thesis helps to understand that, far from being an industry old-fashioned, obsolete industry, a strength of this medium lies in its ability to renew and authorize changes likely to bring new momentum. Through the articulation of reality TV, which causes the re-industrialization of television, precisely because of this ability to endue; this again seems to have inspired such sources both old as distant. Thus, it can claim to provide answers, tentative as they may be, the problems posed, for example, by the socio-economic slowdown of television or by audience fragmentation. This is particularly the case of streaming, daily multicasting or preferential-time programmation…

Full textAlgerian society's multiform crisis was prepared in the educational system. The 1971 reform of higher education was intented to mark the birth of a truly national university that would owe nothing to its colonial past. Two decades after its implementation, we are forced to admit that it has worsened what was abready negative in this institution this reform was part of a process of instrumentalization, of political and ideological control over the institution, a process with origins in a "far-off past". Reforms were made within this reform in the 1980s, but they have turned out to be the final stage in this process rather than the preliminary, stage of a new one. The institute of law of algiers seems in this respects a revelator of the stakes which have definited the colonial institution and its national redefinition

Full textFor 6 years, Mexico has known an important overthrow in its audiovisual system. The sale of the 152 TV stations of the national network from the public channels 7 and 13, in 28 out of 31 states of the country, has broken the integration and social cohesion links that television had with the population. The cultural penetration power of television is extraordinary and influences the creation and the reinforcement of social values as well as the configuration of behavior examples. And it is this function that you cannot find anymore in the Mexican audiovisual panorama. With the privatization of the cultural and educative public channels, the Mexican television has become a completely private television liable to the market laws, marketing and entertainment. The problem of Mexico is the lack of the state in television administration, which reinforces national and international private television. Even if the national public channel network has been sold, some educative and cultural public stations still exist in some states of the country, like the CORAT (Comisión de radio y televisión de Tabasco) channel 7 (Tabasco state, South-West of the country). The objective of this research is to know if after 15 years of existence, channel 7 is still an educative and cultural channel and if there is still a place for this kind of television in a state and a country where economical and political forces are more important than social needs. The institutional analysis, which consists in the understanding of a social reality, starting from the stakes of forms and forces in which the practices and the statements of the actors intervene, helps in the right comprehension of problems, situations, circumstances, causes and effects surrounding channel 7 in Tabasco. It results in a proposal of political, economical and social strategies, and the reaffirmation that the solution concerning Mexican audiovisual landscape is a regional educative and cultural public television. The method of this research is partly based on 62 interviews of people from different social classes in the state of Tabasco, which is the main resource of this study

Full textThe development of new digital techniques (binary coding) in the field of communication leads to a complete reexamination of its analytical frameworks. Television sphere bears witness to this evolution. Better than any other communication medium, TV has been reworked both from the point of view of its form (interactiveness) and of its content (programs, conception of the place and the role of TV viewer). While this topic is widely treated and is often presented in media and especially through internet, the heuristic contribution of a sociological reflection consists in the demonstration that the diffusion of digital technologies across the so called new technologies of communication (NTC) can better be explained by the specificity of social and cultural context than by its technical potential (which characterizes the "technicist" ideology). Thus, understanding digital techniques supposes to begin with a precise examination of social expectations, conscious and unconscious, in matter of communication. From this point of view, we have to admit that our societies feel especially concerned about communication, at such a point that it is put at the heart of all social relationships. Many speeches would lead us to conclude that technology is stronger than social space, and even to conclude that technology is "all powerful", sociology proposes to "recontextualize" innovation in order to catch its real stakes. Afterwards, analyzing communication as a myth, our wish will be to interpret investment of our times in those technologies and the expectations that they take charge of social link as the expression of a profound identity anguish of modern societies

Full textIn 2003, the news channel Al Arabiya continuously, which is the result of a private investment Saudi capital, began broadcasting its programmes. It comes in the framework of development strategies of the group's activities MBC, which is the pioneer in satellite broadcasting in the Middle East. For this reason, Al Arabiya may represent a certain vision of Saudi Arabia, first on Saudi Arabia and then on "Arab World". This vision is conveyed through the channel to its financial players, the owners of MBC, which react according to their own interests, which may coincide with those of power in Saudi Arabia. Its actors who come from the proximity of the Saudi political arena as the business world have their own reasons which justify their participation in the media sphere in space Arabic. They need political support. The official Saudi Arabia, which is in a state of war against the fundamentalists, also needs a new forum that defends his point of view, which justifies its policy and rebuilt a favorable opinion to its policy among Arab populations. It is therefore a meeting between economic interests and benefits policies

Full textFollowing the research on TV talk shows which has already been published, the thesis explores and interprets the way this particular type of broadcast is being reformed today. As material for the relations between individuals and society, the way of setting-up the live audience puts into questions the filmic, linguistic and dramatic registers proper to the way people talk on TV. The first part of research explains the methodological process used to constitute the work. Relating to the constitution of the corpus it focuses on the reception formats. The second part goes further developing the conceptual, theoretic process by analysing how the status of the filmic and linguistic setting has been created. The third part aims at defining the contractual relations between the viewers and the broadcasts featuring democratic participation. Throughout the work, the purpose is to show how the way the live audience is featured relies on social dissatisfaction combined with distinct, yet complementary language registers. The thesis also demonstrates how the relation between the live audience and the viewers give birth to a modern way of making suffering into a show

Full textThrough the example of television, the study at hand aims to extend our present understanding of the role of the media in twentieth century mass culture and daily life. It sets out to renew current approaches that traditionally hinge on message production, by focusing instead on the way these messages are received. The study describes and measures the broad range of viewer practices, challenging the stereotype of cultural homogenization. It brings to light the logics behind the construction of viewer tastes and judgments. Lastly, it presents a history of the audience itself, its makeup, discourses and representations. The so-called “general public” turns out to be a founding and federating myth of the French television of the Glorious Thirty, a myth that was later to be debunked by alternative representations of diverse audiences as they became more and more visible. The study encompasses a period ranging from the nineteen-fifties to the nineteen-eighties – i. E. The time when television became widespread –, the period being rife not only with drastic changes but also slower transformations, both impacting the way one watches television. In order to explore the complex process of reception, the author has relied on varied and complementary sources, providing both quantitative data, such as audience statistics and the surveys carried out by TV broadcasters, and qualitative information, as found in the often emotional viewer mail. The Centre d'Archives Contemporaines and the Inathèque, who hold these as of yet unexploited archives, have made it possible to turn media reception into a historical object
Espineira, Karine. "La construction médiatique des transidentités." Nice, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012NICE2010.
Full textThis research, undertaken as Information and Communication Science, focusses upon different forms of media construction of transidentities, under the light of gender studies and cultural studies, showing how our representations generate both social and media-cultural models. This study leans on five years of participative field observation of French transidentities, and also on a body of eight hundred audiovisual documents held by the INA, dating from 1946 to the present day. Understanding the evolutionary process of subject representation by following the field’s shift (trans’ support groups and trans’ people) from the very beginning of the media coverage of trans’ people on television is the essential challenge of this thesis. The Gender device appears in it as both the basis and the drive behind the hegemonic functioning of a co-constructed model, which paradoxically remains a minority model in the field. The study of semantic shifts in the media lexicon of transidentities - characterized by the way in which "back page” news stories have gradually disappeared in favor of "social fact", themselves gradually replaced by the subversive notion of "equal rights "- allows to describe and to analyze the objective links held by the social representations and media representations, which have now become consubstantial
Ben, Amor-Mathieu Leïla. "La communauté inventée : la télévision hispanique dans l'espace public américain." Toulouse 2, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998TOU20005.
Full textHispanic american television is studied both through its position within the American public sphere and as a sounding board for a variety of symbolic struggles. It is indeed busy defining a new social group whose very existence has been imposed by the state: the hispanic community. Spanish-language television appears to be a dominant player within the "Hispanic public sphere" where competing definitions of hispanicity abound. Analysing both the position of Spanish language television and the role its journalists and producers are playing as cultural producers, as well as the discourse of Hispanic television itself, sheds a new light on television's ability to legitimize non dominant views of the world; it also highlights the fact that ethnic television sells integration to its viewers and new, readily tailored consumers to its advertisers
