Citizen journalism has now become one of the most developed television program concepts. If the concept was initially more widely used in radio and online media, this time with easier and cheaper technology coverage and delivery of images, it is a concept that provides a place for people to become amateur journalist that can also be easily applied in the medium of television. Research raised the issue on how the concept and implementation of citizen journalism on television in the era of media convergence. The purpose of this study is to explain concepts and demonstrate the implementation of citizen journalism on television in the era of media convergence. Research used qualitative method in which data were obtained using literature study. Results of the study showed that the implementation of citizen journalism on television is also increasingly facilitated by the entry of the television in the era of media convergence, or different media mingle, such as television with printed, radio, and Internet media. The era of media convergence makes the concept of citizen journalism can be more developed, because the platform or media distribution is also increasingly varied for amateur journalist. However, the system equipment that must be provided, human resources that must be owned, as well as huge capital to be owned make a few television stations open a lot of platforms to provide space for amateur journalist in citizen journalism.

Abstract:
In this paper we examine current developments in new media and Chinese television. In particular, we present a case study of the Spring Festival Eve Gala 2002, sponsored by China Central Television Station (CCTV). Despite the rapid development of digital technology and new media in recent years, Chinese television is unlikely to be transformed quickly. We propose that coevolution and convergence with new media offer the most effective strategy for the future development of Chinese television. The case study indicates that the current progress in media and communications technologies has set the stage for a gradual and incremental transformation of Chinese television.

Abstract:
The use of the internet has become a habit among millennials lately. The products of these two media are television and YouTube. Presentation of content that is considered almost the same, namely using audio-visual media, YouTube is considered to be a new medium that will shift and even replace the existence of the television industry. In 2020, We are Social analysis said the number of YouTube users reached 2 billion each month. This has a significant impact on television, one of which is NET (News and Entertainment Television) that owned by PT NET Mediatama. The increasing number of YouTube viewers compared to declining television, NET experienced a decline in revenue in 2020, due to a continuous decrease in audience ratings with the number of sponsors obtained. As a conventional media, NET now has to compete with YouTube. The program that is the focus of this research is the Tonight Show, where the program is broadcast hybridly in terrestrial form and exclusively on YouTube streaming. The research was conducted using a constructivist paradigm and a qualitative approach with a case study method. Interviews with assistant producers of the Tonight Show became primary data and published interviews, media content and literature that examined the convergence of communication media and industry became secondary data. Based on research findings from a business point of view, convergence in the television industry can open up new professional opportunities, such as providing opportunities for television media managers to expand public choice, as has been implemented by the Tonight Show program with the Tonight Show Premiere. Even though YouTube viewers in Indonesia are increasing, the existence of the television industry still has its place, because exposure to television content can be felt by more people compared to YouTube, because not everyone can access the internet, especially in Indonesia.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Comparative Media Studies, 2007.
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.
Includes bibliographical references.
The American daytime serial drama is among the oldest television genres and remains a vital part of the television lineup for ABC and CBS as what this thesis calls an immersive story world. However, many within the television industry are now predicting that the genre will fade into obscurity after two decades of declining ratings. This study outlines how the soap opera industry is and could be further adapting to the technological and social changes of a convergence culture to maintain and revitalize the genre's relevance for viewers and advertisers alike. CBS/Procter and Gamble Productions/TeleVest's As the World Turns will serve as a case study for these changes. This project examines how the existing fan base plays an active role in gaining and maintaining new fans by researching historical and contemporary examples of social relationships that fans form with other fans and the show itself. In addition to looking at how these fan communities operate, this thesis focuses on how soap operas have adapted and might adapt to alternate revenue models such as product placement, capitalize on their vast content archives, and tell stories through multiple media formats. The study concludes that soap operas should be managed as brands and not ephemeral television content because of their permanence in the television landscape, that fans outside the target advertising demographic should be empowered as proselytizers for the show, and that a transgenerational storytelling approach best utilizes the power of the genre to tell its stories.
by Samuel Earl Ford.
S.M.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how television captures and organizes the attention of the mass public in the age of media convergence. It is argued that media proliferation and technological convergence have led to a fragmented audience. Paradoxically, audience fragmentation also provides the condition for the powerful return of collective attention in the case of new-media-based attention implosion. This chapter uses the case of the extraordinary (online) popularity of television drama character Brother Laughing in Hong Kong to illustrate the phenomenon of new-media-based attention implosion and the dynamics behind it. The analysis shows that attention implosion is generated by audience members’ time-space shifting practices and key individuals’ organizational efforts, both facilitated by the new media. It led to the formation of an interpretive public surrounding the fictional character. Implications of the phenomenon on our understanding of the relationship between television, social life, and collective public attention are discussed.

Abstract:
With the advancement of media technologies, traditional media and new media converge at a pace faster than ever globally. In the People’s Republic of China (PRC), nonetheless, while infrastructure is mature and audience is abundant, media convergence is not at all ready to take off. In theoretical term, the zigzag path of the convergence between television industry and the Internet in China origins from the clash between the state and the market. The chapter presents a special case in which political forces become a potential shaping force for media convergence and in the authoritarian environment of China, politics still reigns over technologies and the market. From a political economy perspective, the dominance of politics can be explained in terms of the process of regulatory spatialization.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the emerging media regionalization that takes place in Asia in 2000s. Japan and Hong Kong used to be the dominant cultural exporters commercializing their national media products to the nearby Asian markets. The recent market success of Korean wave and the gradual opening of Chinese market bring media regionalization to a different level. The chapter selects three cases to present the detailed image of cultural standardization in Asia’s media regionalization. The first centers on the circulation of media text in television drama, emphasizing on Korean wave and the particular TV series, Boys Over Flowers. The second case discusses Taiwanese popular music and its influence on Mandopop in the Chinese communities. The last case studies the regionalization of online game from China. This case examines the localization of Chinese online game, Westward Journey Online II. Chinese online games initially begin with the imitation of Korean game but later form their national branding based upon a mixture of global and local cultural elements that speak to the largest group of online game consumers in the pan-Asian market.

Abstract:
Although the preservation of cultural heritage has always been a primary task of cultural policy in many countries, the idea of combining digital technology and cultural heritage was almost entirely unknown as recently as 1990. It is undeniable that digital technologies have played an important part in our lives. In the case of Taiwan, the government has been working on digitizing cultural heritage by launching National Digital Archives Program since 2002. Most scholarship has focused either on technical practices or the economic value of such practices. Scanty attention has been paid to the relationship between digital cultural heritage, cultural citizenship, and one’s imagined community. In other words, the application of digital technology onto cultural heritage has been largely unmapped in terms of identity formation. This study explores the social and cultural implication of the combination of technology and heritage. When heritage meet contemporary technology, how does it shape and what does it implicate for one’s cultural identity and imagined community?

The research conducted in Turkey indicates that the television viewers usually spend their leisure daytime watching television programs such as health, cooking, beauty, fashion, shopping, and competitions. These programs that mostly refer to entertainment function enable viewers to learn as well as have an enjoyable time. Among the reasons why the television viewers prefer to watch these programs are migration to larger cities and the need of the viewers, who spend more time together at home with the family and have nothing but the television at home as the neighborhood culture has disappeared, to see their equivalents and communicate their troubles. This chapter discusses the changing program preferences of the television audience and the causes affecting the transforming program contents since the early 2000s in Turkey, which is one of the countries with the highest television-viewing rate and uses the method of in-depth interview with the experts in the field.

Abstract:
This study deals with Latin American fans of Turkish television series within the context of digital fandom and convergence culture. With the rise of internet technologies, the spread of the television series has become easier on a global scale, and this process leads to a rather more multifaceted world where Latin American audiences are not compelled to Latin American telenovelas anymore; they can even become devoted fans of Turkish television series that are quite successful worldwide. In this chapter, the transformation of television series fandom is analyzed through the case study of Latin American fans of Turkish television series. The way they become fans and contribute to the sustainability of the success of Turkish television series in the region and worldwide through fan labor is studied in detail. Since Turkey has become the second exporter of television series right after the United States, such a study aims to come up with a roadmap on the transformation of fandom presenting future directions for further study.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to establish what platforms and technologies the Latvian audience chooses for consuming television news and informative content, the reasons guiding this choice, as well as the effect of this choice by audience on the creation of content by television channels in Latvia. The theoretical basis of the work consists of theoretical works explaining the media ecology, transformation and convergence of the media environment, theories on the interaction of the media and the audience – the theory of agenda setting, use and satisfaction, as well as a theoretical look at the importance of television in the media environment and the characteristics of its audience. Secondary data analysis was used to obtain research data, analysing Latvian audience studies, audience television news and informative content usage diary research, as well as semi-structured interviews with responsible specialists of the television industry. The data collected and compiled within the framework of the study confirm that the use and spread of Internet resources and technologies has influenced the behaviour of the audience in consuming television news and informative content. The study reveals important features of audience behaviour change concerning the habits of using television news and informative content, which directly affects the creation and distribution of this content.

Abstract:
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology] Aim/Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of mentor’s work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way. Background: The New Media offers our “screen kids” a lot of information, many behavioral models, and a new type of social communication. The Elements Way is an educational method designed to enhance openness, development, breakthroughs, goal achievement, and transformation in the age of media and social networks. Methodology: The Elements Way was developed following research on communication in the diversified media, especially new media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and television reality shows, and the study is an examination of the effectiveness of mentors’ work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way. All mentors had been trained in the Elements Way. The study population included 640 mentors working with immigrants’ children in Israel. The work was conducted in 2010-2013. The mixed-methods approach was selected to validate findings. Contribution: Empowering children and enhancing their ability to cope; Creating openness and sharing, making children more attentive to the significant adults in their lives; Supporting children who face the complex reality that characterizes our age. Findings: Significant differences were found in the mentors’ conduct with the children. Work programs were designed and implemented with care and consistency, and mentors succeeded in generating change within the children and achieving desired goals. Of the 640 participating mentors, 62 were not able to promote the child, and interviews with them revealed that their work with the children was not consistent with the Elements Way and began from a different vantage point. Recommendations for Practitioners: Success factors: Self-awareness and awareness of one’s surroundings. Empathy. Willingness to engage in significant interactions. Self-cleansing and self-reflection. Ability to engage in a personal and interpersonal dialogue. Ability to accept and contain the child. Cooperation with the child in creating a work program and assisting the child to achieve the goals that were set in the program. Recommendation for Researchers: Future studies should focus on analyzing the discussions of children and adolescents, to add depth to our insights regarding children and adolescents’ perception of the mentors’ work from their perspective. Impact on Society: Finding the “keys” to openness, development, goal achievement, and transformation in our work with “screen kids.” Future Research: Studies that are designed to examine the effectiveness of mentor’s work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way.
