Abstract:
There have been complaints over the quality of television programmes in Tanzania from various groups including; professionals, viewers, television programme sponsors and media authorities. Recognizing the role played by the availability of diverse programme quality perspectives on the amount such compliments, this study sought to establish an understanding on how stakeholders view quality in TV programmes. The study triangulated quantitative and qualitative methods in order to establish a better understanding. The study involved a total of 70 respondents that included; television programmes producers, television programmes viewers, programme sponsors, television programmes managers, and telecom/electronics engineers/technicians. The study has used questionnaire and interviews to collect data from these respondents. Based on the data collected, the study has found that the term “quality” in the context of television production is “erratic” due to the absence of specific standards for measuring it save for different perspectives of professionalism, viewers, business/sponsorships, editorial polices, creativity and cultural orientations. In order to sustain quality control, the study recommends among other things, the establishment of quality control boards or quality assurance unit by the government to spearheading standards in television production and bridge professionalism.

Abstract:
This article explores the ways in which television registered, and broadcast, colonial discourse in the specific context of Kenya and Britain in the 1950s. Focusing on the wildlife programming of the husband and wife team Armand and Michaela Denis as its case study, an examination of programmes such as Filming in Africa (BBC, 1955) and On Safari (BBC, 1957–65) is offered, looking at the ways in which these programmes negotiated the transition between colonial spectacle and a cosy, domestic address for British television. The article will explore what these programmes reveal about Britain's ‘imagined Kenya’ in the final years of colonial rule, and argue that it is possible to trace a colonial lament in this form of popular entertainment on the cusp of the decolonisation of Kenya. These programmes are thus interesting as examples of colonial television, that is, domestic television broadcasting made outside the UK by programme-makers who present themselves as being simultaneously ‘at home’ and ‘abroad’ on the BBC. Importantly, the programmes aimed to bridge a perceived gap between the ‘outside world’ of colonised ‘wild’ space and the ‘inside world’ of television's interior, domestic spaces. A history of the Denises’ programmes is reconstructed by intertwining archival research into scripts, set designs, publicity materials and production notes with analyses of the programmes themselves.

The reflection on the possible effects that television violence may have on children watching it is a commonplace in scientific literacy about media education. The author of this paper analyzes some television programmes and comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to provide a critical vision about what television is and means in our societies avoiding prejudices or fears but with responsability and formation.

Abstract:
European television channels harbour a significant amount of imported programmes within their schedules. This presence, with its social and cultural impact, is directly affected by the established practices of the television industry which conditions the type and origin of the foreign programmes that are being acquired by linear broadcasters. This research article aims to analyse the criteria used by local television buyers when acquiring international programmes and understand the reasons behind transnational television flows. The findings of the interviews with the television buyers of the main free-to-air television corporations of the United Kingdom and Spain reveal that there is a high level of standardization across the two countries in the decision making process and this homogenizes the range of programme viewers are exposed to. However, a differentiation between public and commercial channels has to be made since public broadcasters consider social and cultural aspects to a higher degree.

Children television in Spain is closely bound to the widespread commercial TV model. The analysis of children programmes broadcast in a regional channel of Spanish public television allows us to see not only the scarce investment for children programmes, but also the inclusion of some contents and values which could be considered as inappropriate from an educational viewpoint.

Abstract:
The main focus of this article is the use, significance, and role of sound in food and food travel programmes, exemplified by cooking programmes broadcast on Danish television – public service and commercial channels. The aim is to demonstrate how sound and music in this kind of programme plays an important part mediating both the cooking and the kitchen as wellordered and well organized. The use of music represents flow, but refers also to locality, globality and identity, and is often linked to the notions of nostalgia, tradition and authenticity, and contributes to an aesthetization of food programmes as it forms part of the performance and presentation of meals. The early kitchen programmes emphasized on information, as a kind of living cooking books as the idea was to enlighten the housewives and their practices by challenging their common sense choices introducing a more French inspired kitchen. In relation to such kitchen programmes todays cooking programmes seem to appeal to a broader sensibility as they present us to the possibilities of modern life, and the chefs’ multisensuorious performances underlines this – often induced by the sound. It is through the sounds in food programmes that an authentic experience of taste and smell is mediated to the viewer: both through the lustful, approving sounds made by presenters and through the cooks’ handling of raw materials. What looks delicious, also smells and tastes delicious – mediated through sound.

Abstract:
With this presentation we try to reflect upon the concept of quality with regards to television for children. In addition, we aim to identify a set of criteria which can allow us to recognize and evaluate the quality of programming for younger audiences. This analysis is based both on the contribution of different authors that have studied quality in television and on the opinions of professionals who intervene and pay especial attention to programming for children in Portugal. The opinions of these professionals were collected by interview in the frame of a larger study which focused the offer and programming criteria for children in the Portuguese terrestrial channels. As we shall see, some professionals emphasize the content of television programming and programmes, while others stress the levels of audience, the human and technical resources as well as the goals pursued by each channel.

Camur, Aysel. "Charity Programmes: Representations Of Poverty In Turkish Television." Master's thesis, METU, 2004. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12605061/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the representation of poverty in the charity programmes broadcast on Turkish television, namely Deniz Feneri, Kimse Yok mu, Yarinlar Umut Olsun and Yolcu. It examines the continuities, discontinuities and breaks in the representation of poor with reference to Turkish cinema, novel and media. Critical discourse analysis of the charity programmes indicates that poverty is legitimised and naturalised, being made no reference to social, economic and political context of poverty. The construction of the poor as &ldquo
objects of aid&rdquo
given by &ldquo
philanthropists&rdquo
is examined and it is argued that the poor become a means of salvation, self-realisation and self-fulfilment of &ldquo
philanthropist&rdquo
. It is here claimed that Islam and nationalist-conservative discourse serve the internalisation and tranquillisation of poverty in the programmes. The study also analyses the visual and aural representations of the poor in the programmes. The slow-motion, black and white photographs, close-up, limited motion, and the music accompanying the pictures are the most fundamental tools of dramatising poverty in the charity programmes
and they address to &ldquo
conscience&rdquo
of &ldquo
philanthropists&rdquo
. It is also argued that voiceover and subtitling efface the voice of the poor.

Abstract:
The work presented in this Thesis details the development and evaluation of a working production methodology for the creation of a prototype television programme for the emerging medium of interactive broadcasting. With few production methodologies available for the creation of interactive television programmes, the research work used exploratory methods to identify suitable provision in the field of interaction that could be adapted for interactive television distribution by present and of future broadcast systems. As well as implementing a form of interaction currently unavailable through interactive television in the UK, the methodology presented utilises existing television stock. Through the constraints imposed in using existing recordings the work identified the steps necessary in implementing a process for converting the 20 material into 3D so that advanced interaction in the form of user control of a virtual camera could be implemented. Through the identification of a unique set of existing software tools and the production of a dataflow.for the successful integration of those software tools, a prototype interactive television programme was created using existing television stock. 80th the methodology and the programme created were evaluated in terms of whether the working methodology was understandable by third parties and in the acceptance of a new form of television content by an audience.

Waller, A. S. "Meta TV in practice : a study of the re-use of television texts within contemporary television programmes." Thesis, University of Salford, 2015. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/34068/.

Abstract:
This thesis considers how television reflects on its own output in the context of newly created television programmes which seek to reconsider, reframe and re-contextualise the content of television programmes that have already been broadcast. It does this by considering a range of programmes created between 2002 and 2009 as part of my work as a practice based researcher. These programmes cover some of the key genres in contemporary television and reflect the development of forms and themes within the medium. The broad focus of this work is to seek to gain an understanding of what fresh meanings can be derived from re-using existing television content in new programmes that contextualise it with the provision of newly commissioned and created visual content. More specifically the work seeks to explore the role of the implied viewer and his or her proxies on screen and how this affects the construction and delivery of these new programmes. The programmes under consideration include archive based retrospectives of television dramas, lifestyle programmes and property formats. These are viewed from the perspective of key ideas in television studies including fan studies, celebrity culture, intertextuality, hybridity and television history. Taken altogether, it is argued the work constitutes a meta-practice in television.

Abstract:
The ways in which literary creations are capitalized in artistic television programs (programsshows) compared to adaptations in the art of cinema provide us with a favorable framework for more accurate identification of the necessary distinctions between these two audiovisual fields. But the theory of cinema screening cannot be used as such in the making of films / television shows. Using the figure of the narrator, the small screen widened the possibilities of audiovisual capitalization of literary species. The narrator’s mission does not lie in scholarly commentary; his colloquial discourse, interwoven, not infrequently, with different testimonies-declarations of faith of the author, must become the binder of the entire television construction, to evade descriptive patterns. The purpose of the comment is to enhance the image through the informative virtues of the word, but, at the same time, not to have a tautological character. Unfortunately, in the conditions of the unprecedented proliferation of television entertainment products, the quality literary page is making its way to the small and big screen harder and harder.

The article highlights and analyzes the factors influencing the activities of television editorial teams in the period of new political, economic and security circumstances. It is noted that all-Ukrainian influential television channels, which have the highest popularity and high ratings, are oligarchic media with a high level of political involvement. Ukrainian television is widely practicing to narrow the thematic range of programs, reports and programs resulting in unjustified dominance in the television space of entertainment and humorous genres, «ravel journalism», excessive overweight of foreign programs and of obsolete quality film production. In the news programs, some TV companies, including 1 + 1, widely emphasize negative issues that are not typical of Ukrainian society, which often has a petty, urban and secondary status. Instead, a wide range of real, socially important, topical issues and problems remain out of the professional attention of journalists, analysts and experts. Guided only by the criterion of rating programs, programs, stories, topics and problems, TVs lose the most active segment among the audience – critical thinking, knowledgeable, erudite recipient, who, choosing an information resource, increasingly prefers the internet journalism.

Abstract:
In 2011, India had more phone users (around 54 per cent of households) and television access (33 per cent) in rural areas than people with access to tap water (31 per cent) and toilet facilities (31 per cent), according to Census 2011. This clearly indicates the failure of government programmes to change the centuries-old practice of defecation in the open. This neglect of safe sanitation has had catastrophic outcomes in terms of human well-being. This case study is an analysis of the latest central government Swachch Bharat Mission - Gramin (Clean India Mission - Rural) (or SBM-G), which has achieved much greater success than any hitherto government effort in providing access to and use of toilets, especially in rural areas where the need is greatest. However, any conception of achieving ODF status, or free of open defecation, in a village (or any limited geography) is more than merely building toilets. The Sanitation Learning Hub commissioned case studies of sanitation campaigns in both India and Nepal, drawing out the lessons learnt for other countries wishing to implement similar initiatives. Both case studies focus on how target setting and feedback and reporting mechanisms can be used to increase the quality of campaigns.

Abstract:
The review is about textbook on television and radio communication for students, teachers of faculties and departments of journalism, as well as journalists-practitioners, prepared by the author’s team edited by Vasyl Lyzanchuk. Textbok absorbed some considerations and conclusions from previous theoretical developments, which found a new meaning here, deeper argumentation, supplemented by many interesting observations that correspond to the spirit of the time, the innovations that have appeared in recent years in the media space of Ukraine. The textbook has ten sections, each of which is designed to enrich the student with knowledge of television and radio communications, teach him or her all that a media professional should know and be able to apply it in practice. The titles of the sections indicate their practical orientation: «Basic methodical measures of functioning of information radio and television genres», «How we analyze, interpret, explain facts, events, phenomena», «Features of the creation of artistic programs on radio and television» and others. All sections of the textbook are meaningfully connected and constructed in such a way as to provide students with the opportunity to gradually, step by step to deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of television and radio communications. This is undoubtedly the merit of the authors of the edition. The student will benefit from the numerous examples of television and radio materials prepared by the students themselves. Their creative work should convince that this work can serve as a stimulus for creative work for future journalists during their years of study. In addition to professional competence, as rightly emphasized in the textbook by Professor Vasyl Lyzanchuk, “It is very important to form in students, future journalists, socio-national competence, deep understanding of the essence of freedom of speech and responsibility for the content of the spoken word and image, to develop the belief that they are active participants in the Ukrainian state-building processes, and not intermediaries or repeaters of information”. It should be noted that the educational element is present throughout the textbook starting with the first chapter, historical (author Professor Ivan Krupskyi). While studying this textbook, students should realize that from the honor of journalists, their dignity, patriotism depends on the honor, authority, bright name of Ukraine, its future; that their assertion of Ukrainian national identity is the key to further prosperity of our state.
