Abstract:
The theory formulated to date indicates that political infotainment programs arrived in Spain in a widespread manner in the 1990s with the rise of private television channels. But were there spaces in public television that shared the traits of this novel television genre before that time? This article is aimed at analyzing debate and talk shows, as well as hybrid format shows combining both genres, broadcasted on Televisión Española (TVE-1 and TVE-2) during the ‘80s, in order to determine whether or not these programs present the emblematic style characteristic of infotainment. The methodology consists of a content analysis of a total of 31 television programs, each of which was viewed on the RTVE archive using different multimedia platforms. The results of this research reveal that Televisión Española incorporated into its debate shows, talk shows, and hybrid format shows, features typical of infotainment prior to the ‘90s. Among the most recurrent stylistic features of these programs are the tendency to dramatization, polemic and emotionality (achieved through different techniques and strategies), an increase of soft content, a greater presence of satire, humor and close-ups, and the use of music.

Abstract:
Television, with a larger audience than other mass media in Indonesia, can improve youth engagement in politics, or at least their curiosity about politics. Previous studies showed inconclusive results concerning the effects of television viewing and political interest. However, the current study assessed the effect of talk shows and variety show viewership on college students’ political interests. A survey was conducted of 400 college students at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ), Jakarta, Indonesia, using a stratified sampling technique and data analysis with multiple linear regression analysis. The results verified that talk shows and variety show viewership directly relate to the political interest in youth. Variety show viewership has a negative relationship, which means that political interest decreases as viewing of variety show increases. Television use, talk show viewership, and political knowledge positively correlate with political interest. The author suggests a sample from a broader geographical area in the future. Furthermore, the conceptualization of variety shows should be examined more.

Abstract:
On the basis of a transcribed French television corpus made of two news bulletins, two chat shows and one literary programme recorded in February 2003, this paper explores the claim that passé simple (PS) may still be used in prepared oral discourse (Pfister 1974). The corpus does not provide support for that use on television, but it seems to suggest a shift from temporal to aspectual features in French television talk: a perfective presentation prevails on a past presentation. This trend would need to be confirmed by a larger television corpus, tested in other types of oral discourse and tested on written corpora.

Abstract:
Different approaches to the analysis of television production - one-dimensional and multi-dimensional, exist. All television products are classified by purpose, format, way, and frequency of display, audience, genre, country of production, by who it was produced - the channel itself, or a third-party production company, whether this project is licensed or original. In recent years, Russian TV channels have been broadcasting a large number of conversational TV programs - talk shows. In the programmed broadcasting schedule of some TV channels, they take about 9 hours of airtime, and this is without repetitions. These projects can also be classified in several directions. A discussion between people on a particular topic, which includes elements of such genres as interviews and conversation, is the main essence of a talk show. The debate is a recognized genre of analytical journalism, but at the same time, many talk shows are also defined as a genre. The theory of genre is one of the most significant theoretical development areas in art history, but no single, generally accepted definition exists. Some people believe that the tasks of modern talk shows are well known. This is primarily a desire to make a comprehensively exciting television program with elements of intrigue from a primitive topic, to attract attention and a desire to form a specific attitude to the problem under discussion. The author has a different opinion on some points. Indeed, any show is based on attracting attention. For such projects, the presence of viewers in the studio became a kind of confirmation of the audience's interest in the topic and the opportunity to include them in the discussion, to achieve social commonality. However, from the author's point of view, greater attention must be paid to the idea what the producer wants to convey to the audience and how he wants to see it in the future, to the content - with what information and in what genre to do the project, and to the understanding in what form/format to make the content. At the same time, it is essential to remember that according to the theory of V.Behterev, the process of making people have a specific emotional state occurs faster and more efficiently than an attempt to convince them with the help of logical reasoning.

Abstract:
AbstractAdvice giving sequences are often the result of troubles telling sequences in both ordinary conversation and institutional interaction: it is often the case that a troubles teller is offered advice by interlocutors which he/she tends to reject because the interactional rights of a troubles teller are valued and troubles tellers are reluctant to abandon them. This paper analyses advice giving that takes place during Greek reality-television talk shows in which people participate to talk about their troubles and possibly find a solution to the problems they face. Advice is offered by the host/hostess of these shows and/or a professional expert. I explore the ways in which advice is either accepted or rejected during the shows by the guests. The analysis indicates that the guests accept advice that affiliates with their troubles and tend to resist advice that is hearable as criticism of their actions and perspectives. In addition, advice recipients often resort to troubles talk as seeking affiliation with their troubles seems to be more important for them in the talk-show context.

Abstract:
Traditional media have progressively integrated newer media practices, with the constant emergence of new digital technologies, without abandoning their former ones. The adoption of Twitter by TV channels and by other social actors during political talk shows is a case in point. This article aims to assess whether the hybridization of TV talk shows and Twitter has innovated or normalized existing patterns of communication. In the former case, by enabling more interaction between different actors and space for audience deliberation, or in the latter case, by reproducing a traditional one-way communication and a centralized network of information that remains controlled and oriented by the elite (journalists and politicians). The incorporation of older and emergent media logic has an impact on the construction and distribution of political information as well as on the power relationships between journalists, politicians, and TV audiences. Besides allowing political talk shows to expand their flow of information, and to promote their news online, hybridized practices have not only altered the way citizens consume and engage with political information but also how they counter-frame traditional political media content by producing new ones. The research methodology consists of descriptive, content, and network analyses of tweets collected from three Lebanese local TV political talk show “Sarelwa2et” (MTV), “Btefro’ aa Watan” (Al Jadeed), and “Vision 2030” (LBCI) between February and March 2022. Results revealed that TV talk shows are making use of Twitter as a top-down transmitter of information and resorting poorly to its interactive potential. Some newer media practices of Twitter, such as @mention and replies are being applied but only to interact with politicians and journalists, failing to engage with a larger array of voices and thus, leading to an elite-centric discourse within the network. Also, tweets are mostly used to inform audiences and promote TV programs. In addition, network analyses of talk shows via hashtags demonstrated the central and not monopolized role of politicians and journalists as influencers, bridges, and quick spreaders of information. Finally, content analysis of dual screeners’ tweets (n=6000) indicated very little space in a Habermasian public sphere. The total of subjective opinions, irony, and attack/insult tweets are still higher than the total of the introduction of new issues and counter-frames tweets.

Abstract:
Atheism has stirred up controversy in the Arabic-speaking world since the 2011 uprisings, when atheists there began appearing in public. What role does Arabic mass media play in the modern politics of minorities such as atheists, given the heated debates that it hosts on atheism? This question is important because perceptions of media frames influence the behavior of politicians and the electorate—and, as a result, laws that affect minority groups such as atheists. This article focuses on Lebanon, where eight of the nine television channels are affiliated with and funded by religious–political parties. It explores the existence of bias against atheists on televised Lebanese talk shows and news reports (2010–2022). Our findings reveal significant bias (69% overall and over 85% in speaker prominence bias), with channels that promote communal religious practice exhibiting the highest levels. Ultimately, our findings demonstrate that television, as the most influential Lebanese and Arabic mass medium, likely affects the public’s negative perceptions of Arabic-speaking atheists. Our findings reflect the decrease in objectivity in conflict-based media and such media’s poor understanding or intentional disregard for media’s crucial role in building a fair, democratic society.

Teachers in classrooms constantly face a variety of challenges. Poor communication skills, lack of vocabulary, poor grammar, and lack of motivation among students can hamper the teaching and learning process. To deal with these issues, teachers use a variety of methods and teaching materials. This study was conducted to evaluate how teachers can use TV talk shows in their classes to inspire the students. This research study was carried out to understand if talk shows are an effective tool which could be used in classroom lectures. The findings show that using TV talk shows can often excite classes into enthusiastic collaboration in real. Exposing students to visual images of TV talk-shows are more effective than readings alone. They cannot act as substitutes for instructors but can complement readings and lectures. If properly introduced and discussed, TV talk-shows can stimulate inquisitiveness, willingness to learn more and provide frameworks for analysis. However, the focus is on how teachers can make their sessions more interesting and productive by integrating this teaching tool.

This paper investigates whether there are any gender related differences in the use of language by television hosts in American talk shows. It brings a concise overview of gender differences manifested in language usage through different theoretical approaches offered by Otto Jespersen, Labov, Lakoff, Zimmerman and West, Tannen, Coates, Holmes and Cameron, as well as short descriptions of the studies they conducted. The present study analyses the frequency and the most common types of tag questions used by female and male television hosts in American talk shows. Talk shows are one of the most popular and influential forms of television programming that have an effect on society in different ways. They are aired in countries all over the world and there seem to be an amazingly endless number of relevant topics, thus offering interesting corpora for various types of linguistic analysis. The aim of the paper is to investigate whether there are any significant differences between male and female hosts in their use of tag questions.

Abstract:
Presentation of talk show host program has been known to be intelligent, smart, and is able to direct the conversation in the program well. The presentation is in line with the view of talk show programs packed seriously as a journalistic genre program with emphasis on the truth of the facts or information conveyed. However, in recent years there are different representations associated with the talk show host of the program. The representation shows that a talk show host is not such intelligent and smart, and is not able to direct the conversation in the program properly. The existence of this representation is consistent with the theory of social construction assuming that mass media play a major role in shaping the social reality in the society. As of this writing, the audience receives social reality as a representation. Like the previous presentation, as the television has broadcasted for a long time, people feel that the reality is normative and ideal conditions for them. Public realize that the social reality was only the reconstruction of the television when TV presents a representation of another social reality. Nevertheless, whatever the social reality that is deliberately made or reconstructed by the media, including television, in fact everything is a reality that is deliberately created just for the sake of the manager or owner of the television station.

Abstract:
In recent times, the language of mediatized genres has attracted much scholarly attention all over the world. However, little is known about the rhetorical structure and linguistic realisation of television talk shows in Ghana. This study, therefore, examined the Introduction sections of Newsfile, a popular television talk show telecast on JoyNews, a Ghanaian television station, to determine its schematic structure and linguistic realisations. Data for the study comprised five Introduction sections of the Newsfile aired after the 2016 general elections. The data were transcribed and analyzed based on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach to genre analysis. The findings revealed that the Introduction section of the talk show was characterized by ten moves (Greetings, Naming of Programme, The Seller, Naming the Host, Invitation of Viewers, Introduction of Subject, Signalling Commercial Break, Host’s Address, Introduction of Guests, and Introduction of Sponsors), with the Host’s Address and Introduction of Guests realized by steps. The study also revealed that while some of these moves were obligatory, others were optional. Additionally, it was revealed that there were recursions of some moves. Further analysis revealed the linguistic resources used in each of the moves. This study has implications for scholarship on talk shows especially in sub-Saharan Africa, genre studies, pedagogy, and further research.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate how television talk shows are politically employed, especially in times of political conflict between Qatar on one side and Saudi Arabia on the other. Its focus is on AlLewan program that was broadcast on Rotana Khalejia channel during Ramadan 2019. The program includes 29 episodes. The study finds that Alshawa [the awakening] Movement, Qatar, the Saudi opposition, and the Muslim Brotherhood are the top issues addressed in the program. Main actors of the discourse in the program include Osama bin Laden, Saudi opposed Saad Al-Faqih and Mohammed Almasa’ari, and the Saudi crown prince. The most emotionally loaded words and phrases are used to construct a call for facing the state, to ascertain the domination of Allah, and to impose awakening guardianship on the society. The program uses a number of communication strategies and techniques, including communication process strategy, confrontation and accusation, and the showing of clips from previous videos. The program applies several argumentative tools related to the Alshawa, Muslim Brotherhood, Qatar, Islamic cassette tape, the Saudi Crown Prince. Abstract:
AbstractTelevision instructional cooking shows provide a platform for discussion around the performance of self, with bloopers and backstage scenes revealing the best qualities of the celebrity chef’s personality despite the risk of face loss. Bloopers are short clips of mistakes that are typically removed from the media narrative. Often embarrassing and humorous, bloopers are moments when the celebrity chef’s performance is flawed with cooking errors or misspoken words. Drawing on Goffman’s concepts of ‘backstage’ and ‘frontstage,’ this paper analyzes bloopers on five American instructional cooking shows: The French Chef with Julia Child, considered one of the first celebrity chefs on television, and four contemporary how-to cooking shows from Food Network. These shows present cases of bloopers that occur in live and edited scenes, during the cooking demonstration, and pre- and post-filming. While a form of backstage discourse, bloopers support frontstage performance by heightening the celebrity chef’s unique attributes. Bloopers provide an outlet for play on frontstage as well.

Abstract:
Talk shows on television today are programs that are of interest to television viewers in Indonesia. One of the talk shows that television viewers are interested in is the talk show Rumah Uya Trans7. The show is easily followed by the viewers. The speech acts used in the show are light and easy to understand. Another interesting issue is the speech acts are a violation of the politeness principle. Yet, this violation of the politeness principle is the one that makes the television viewers pay attention to the show. These violations of the politeness principle are very interesting to be analyzed. To find out the violation of the politeness principle in the show, the researcher used the theory of pragmatics and descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research were taken from the fragments of the show in the Rumah Uya Trans7 in November 2018. The source of the data was the speech acts in the program which contained violation of the politeness principle. The method of the research was the observation method (simak bebas libat cakap) and recording as well as note-taking techniques to collect the data. The result of the analysis showed that violation of politeness principle was found in the show in the form of violation of maxim of tact, maxim of sympathy, maxim of agreement, maxim of modesty, maxim of approbation, and maxim of feeling reticence. The suggestion for the deepening of the research is the existence of further research in violation of the politeness principle of similar shows but different television station as e media.

Abstract:
Going beyond source and content pluralism, we propose a two-dimensional audience-based measure of perceived pluralism by exploiting the practice of “social TV”. For this purpose, 135,228 tweets related to 30 episodes of prime time political talk shows broadcast in Italy in 2014 have been analyzed through supervised sentiment analysis. The findings suggest that the two main TV networks compete by addressing generalist audiences. The public television offers a plural set of talk shows but ignores the anti-political audience. The ideological background of the anchorman shapes the audience’s perception, while the gender of the guests does not seem to matter.

Abstract:
This paper analyzed the structural organization of turn taking on News Gang talk show aired on Thursday’s night at Citizen Television; Kenya. One of the institutions that have shown growth in terms of proliferations in Kenya is the media. Talk shows as genre on television and radio have become a major arena for the discussions of current issues in the country. Such a setting warrants a linguistic research that may reveal some interesting findings. The study applied Sacks, Shegloff and Jefferson (1974) Conversational Analysis theoretical framework. The study adopted a qualitative research design. Data was collected using notes, direct viewing and audio recording, document review. The News Gang episodes were purposively sampled. Data analysis was analyzed qualitatively by means of content analysis. The study established that News Gang talk show talk shows an identifiable structure that is routinely organized into three phases: opening, body and closing that are used to create a genre. The study therefore concludes that News Gang talk show displays a stable organization structure and the main purpose of News Gang talk show is to inform, entertain and to exchange ideas and opinions on current issues. The study recommends TV talk shows should find a way of incorporating the viewer’s opinions for it to be a more effective tool of communication to the public. It is hoped that the study adds knowledge to linguistics, social studies, and media and communication.

Abstract:
The purpose of our study was to understand the nature of the reality show phenomenon in the system of mass communication through analysis of Ukrainian media market of reality shows. For this purpose we have used a broad methodological base: a descriptive method for identifying the features of reality show and journalism, a bibliographic method for processing scientific sources, an inductive method to determine the functioning of reality show, the method of comparative analysis to understand relationship between journalism and reality show, historic-typological method to classify reality shows, methods of generalization and structuring to develop a modern structure of mass communication. The main results of the research are the following: we found that reality show is a product of journalistic activity; the concept of “reality show” and “reality television” is clearly determined. Reality show is a format of a television product in which the actions and emotions of true people in real-life or in specially modelled situations are observed, characterized by accomplishment of unusual actions and constant commentary on everything that happens to them. This category includes competitions, dating, makeover, etc. Reality TV is a type of television program that demonstrates non-played situations in which real people, whether ordinary citizens or politicians and stars of show business, find themselves. The value of our research is that the correlation between reality show, its types and reality TV is clearly established. Reality TV consists of: 1) reality shows; 2) studio/gaming shows (talk show, late night show, game show), 3) broadcasting events (sports, music events, awards ceremony, etc.). Reality TV belongs to the category of entertainment television. In this study the classification of reality shows has been improved, a whole series of functions of the reality show programs has been identified (entertainment, information, recreation, education, social integration and public control), it is proved that reality show has a great potential in the context of mass communication.

Abstract:
This study examines the depiction of gender in Pakistani and American television discussion programmes. The primary objective is to determine if the talk shows in both countries (i.e., Pakistan and America) display typical gender stereotypes or whether they challenge dominant views of gender and promote fresh depictions. To accomplish this objective, content analysis is performed to examine the sample comprising Pakistani and American television talk programmes. Specifically, programmes broadcast on Pakistani and American general-interest networks have been chosen. Results indicate that only individuals with binary gender expressions (female and male) participated. Males are likelier to play a prominent role in these programmes, particularly as the host position, which is essential to the format's dynamics. As a rule, female characters are less powerful and use significantly less humour than their male counterparts in these talk shows in Pakistan and the United States. On the other hand, late-night talk shows are known for their inclusivity in featuring both male and female guests. They are open to discussing a wide range of topics, from intimate and political matters to current affairs and private issues, without gender bias. The primary conclusion of this study that can be reached is still problematic in terms of gender (male and female) representation, mainly owing to the absence of female players in dominating positions and the preconceived notions about women when they do humour as a host of the programme.

Abstract:
Against a background of increasing electoral support of populist political actors in Europe and beyond, this study offers an exploratory inquiry into modern Ukrainian populism. The article examines populist communication, broadcast on the most highly rated Ukrainian television political talk shows, on the eve of the 2019 presidential election, which was completed in two rounds. A qualitative content analysis of populist communication acts (n=283) shows that Ukrainian viewers were exposed to diverse political discourses containing empty, anti-elitist, emergency, and complete populism, depending on which channel(s) they watched. The dominance of one or another type of populism on the studied channels mirrors the dynamics of media-political parallelism typical of Ukrainian commercial television. The study also examines the roles of different actors—moderators, journalists, and politicians—in either restricting or facilitating populism in the talk show studios. The populism-related reactions collected during this analysis (n=145) are discussed through the prism of normative roles, with a focus on gatekeeping, interpretation, and initiation. Implications for the stakeholders involved in the process of production, moderation, and consumption of political talk shows are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the war discourse on Russian television, particularly in political talk show broadcasts aired after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The question of how the two conflicting parties, Russia and Ukraine, are portrayed verbally and visually in these shows is specifically emphasized. While the quantitative analysis traces a massive increase in Russian talk show broadcasts since the beginning of the war, the Critical Discourse Analysis demonstrates which strategies are utilized to demonise and defame the Ukrainian side and to legitimise the war. By comparing the current war discourse with the Ukraine discourse in 2014, this study shows that talk shows have undertaken a significant role in supporting the war and have become a puissant didactic tool to influence and manipulate public opinion by perennially repeating key governmental messages and efficiently orchestrating all visual, verbal, and non-verbal means at their disposal.
