This paper assesses two cast-iron arch bridges of Thomas Telford (1757-1834) - Bonar Bridge (1810-12) and Mythe Bridge (1824-26) - to draw a broader conclusion about his career in bridge building. The bridges are introduced and Telford's design influences are investigated. While Telford was influenced by theory through the advice of his contemporaries, he was more heavily influenced by experience, especially design precedents, and most of all by his own judgment, which placed great emphasis on both practicality and aesthetics. The structural performance of the two bridges is assessed and compared. The cast-iron arch's ability to resist vertical loading is the main focus of the analysis, following Heyman's framework for limit analysis of arches. Global equilibrium and graphic statics indicate that the each rib, when acting alone, is insufficient to support asymmetric loading, demonstrating that the secondary members are necessary, and therefore that neither bridge is grossly overdesigned. Deck-stiffening effects are tested following Billington's method, and are found to be negligible. The spandrel bracing members are found to be sufficient apart from the development of tension forces in Bonar Bridge. The later Mythe Bridge performs slightly better in all areas; overall, however, the performance is very similar. Based on these results, the paper concludes that Telford chose not to refine his design substantially over the course of his career. It is argued that this was a conscious decision, based on the progression of the industry from cast iron towards wrought iron, and that these bridges are significant because they bookend the short golden age of cast iron bridges, of which Telford was the unquestionable master.

Full textBackground Tarkett is one of the largest company whit manufacturing of floor whit operation in more than 100 countries and has about 12000 employees all over the world. Thanks to the establishment in Ronneby, the company has a strong footprint in Sweden and Northern Europé. The product line of the company is very wide and extending everything from wood, laminate, linoleum, textile, sports and vinyl flooring, as well as wall covering for wet rooms. Problem description Today, Tarkett has three emptyingstations with associated telphers for big bags filled with raw material. These bags are emptied to used as raw material in manufacture of accents in the covering. The accents are used to create pattern in the covering which are diffrent depending on the design that is running. A big bag has calculated to weigh about 800 kg and empties rarely before it is time to shift materials because of changing products. This happens because of the raw materials in the station are not allowed to be mixed up. In the absence of emtying stations and time saving, it ́s not unusual to change half-filled bags and sort the left over materials as energy recovery/landfill, wich cost the company money. Based on earlier saving analyzes, Tarkett is calculated to save about 600 K SEK per annum if they istall two more emptying stations. Goal The goal of this thesis is to provide a proposal of a construction whit two new emptying stations and associated hoists, containing both strength analysis with construction drawing and cost analysis for manufacturing and installation. Conclusion For the new construction to work according to the requirements of today ́s standards, two more IPE-270 beams are required on either side of the three beam of telphers. The welding joint ́s ability to change shape are highly dependent on the hardness and brittleness of the overpass zone. This has to be regarded as a possible source of error because it ́s shifting depending on the human factor when applying welding joints. Based on the text above, the conclusion as been made is that the construction will be welded in a way that all joints provide a average a-measure of 3 mm, even if the theoretical value of the a-measure are 2 mm. The total cost of the reconstruction has been calculated against approximately 380 KSEK, which means that the investment will provide an earning first after 8 months.

Ogilvie, A. L. "Textural and LA-ICP-MS trace element chemistry analysis of pyrite and chalcopyrite from Telfer Au-Cu deposit, W.A.: implications for a multi-source ore system." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/110492.
Full textThe Telfer Au-Cu deposit, Paterson Province, W.A. is hosted within two doubly-plunging anticlines, the Main Dome and the West Dome. The deposit consists of vertically-stacked, stratabound Au-Cu mineralised horizons ('reefs') linked by associated stockwork, sheeted and discordant veins. The study targeted a better petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical understanding of pyrite and chalcopyrite in E-Reefs mineralization with the objective of placing additional constraints on ore genesis. Particular emphasis is placed on Type-4 pyrite as defined by Fargher (2012), notably the speciation of mineral inclusions within this type and their significance for a genetic model involving granitoid-sourced fluids. The trace element chemistry of the associated chalcopyrite was characterised by Laser-Ablation Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass-Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to identify whether a similar signature is present. Back-scatter electron imaging established a number of mineral associations and inclusions within pyrite and chalcopyrite. These define a pronounced Sn-Bi-Ag geochemical signature in the E-Reefs. LA-ICP-MS data for pyrite, and particularly chalcopyrite, from the E-Reefs exhibit the same Sn-Ag-Bi geochemical signature and are indicative of a granitophile character. Such a signature is unlike that of the Middle Vale Reef. Arsenopyrite- and gersdorffite-bearing assemblages within crosscutting veins indicate a superposed hydrothermal event, in which additional elements, like As, were introduced to the system. There is also evidence of extensive ore remobilisation as the result of a later thermal event. These findings support a modified model of ore genesis for the Telfer deposit in which not all components in the ore fluid were leached from the surrounding sedimentary rocks but also involve fluids from adjacent granites. This has application not only to the Telfer deposit but carries implications for other ore systems in the Paterson Province. Results also contribute to ongoing work 'fingerprinting' chalcopyrite from different ore types to establish a basis for discriminating metal sources and fluid evolution.
