Abstract:
The Andhra Sahitya Parishat or the Telugu Academy as it was also known occupied a definitive role in the formation of a Telugu public and the development of Telugu literary activism in the early twentieth century. This essay revisits the early years of the Andhra Sahitya Parishat (1911–15) in order to examine questions related to the origins of ‘Telugu Classicism’ and its relationship to Indian negotiations with colonial modernity. By reviewing the Parishat’s membership, early interventions in public literary controversies, and its successful attempts to position itself as a nationalist interm

The unholy nexus between media houses and politics is a well-known sad reality. Such nexus is further complicated by the involvement of caste. The present essay examines the trajectory of Eenadu, a Telugu daily in Andhra Pradesh, and its political manoeuvrings in favour of the Kamma-dominated Telugu Desam Party. Describing the entry of Eenadu, the essay moves to examine the newspaper’s consistent support of the TDP and its stance against the Congress in AP through the political fortunes for N.T. The hugely popular 1962 Telugu film Gundamma Katha borrows heavily from William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The film is a social comedy in which two male protagonists work together to tame a shrewish woman and her mother, saving a virtuous sister in the process. The objective of such taming is the conversion of the shrew into that of the virtuous housewife. This essay argues that both shrewishness and virtue are indexed in the film to a particular conception of labor that tropologically surrounds Telugu regional identity. In this framework, the virtuous woman is expected to work whi

Abstract The multilingual turn in literary studies emphasizes the fairly recent emergence of a monolingual attachment to language. While this rightly calls into question the academic focus on monolingual competencies and offers a substantial area of inquiry for scholars working with the linguistically diverse regions of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, this essay posits that the persistence of multilinguality among historical actors from these regions does not merit a shift away from monolingualism in contemporary scholarship. This argument derives from the claims analyzed in this essa

In late nineteenth-century Telugu desa, “Victoria” was more than the name of the queen of Great Britain. It was, in Homi Bhabha's famous formulation, a “sign taken for wonder” the signification of which, however, remained ambivalent. As soon as she was proclaimed the empress of India, the queen's name acquired emblematic connotations that were exploited in both reform and counterreform discourses. Treating Queen Victoria not as a person but as a personification, the present essay reads some of the fetishized signs of the queen in the spatial, print, and literary cultures and notes how the colo

Bhaṭṭumūrti’s mid-sixteenth-century masterpiece, Vasu-caritramu, is a tour de force of linguistic and poetic experimentation. Its complex verses, many of them paronomastic (śliṣṭa), require decoding by the adept listener of reader; but such decoding never exhausts their expressive potential, much of which depends upon powerful sonic, musical and rhythmic effects. This essay attempts to reconstruct the (lost) protocols of reading for this complex work, including the pervasive links to earlier intertexts, the magic of combining syllables to work upon both the world and the reader’s mind, and the

Abstract The essay attempts to trace the multiple trajectories of the Kannada intellectual tradition. One of the main arguments of the essay is that the Kannada intellectual tradition does not operate with exclusivist notions. What is being suggested through this is the point that the Kannada tradition borrowed freely from Pali, Prakrit, Sanskrit, Telugu, and Tamil while shaping its various epistemological dimensions. It is also necessary to recognize the fact that the Kannada language did not try to resist linguistic registers belonging to other languages, especially Sanskrit. At the same tim
