We have manufactured and investigated a novel phase retarder based on a rare and less studied liquid crystal phase, such as the Crystal Smectic G-phase prepared by mixing two certified nematic mixtures. The phase retarder is transparent in the visible and near-infrared parts of the optical spectrum. The temperature stability over a wide temperature range, high birefringence, and high strength, allow the production of various types of phase retarders that can be used in optics, optical chemical analysis, and polarimetry.

Polymer gel treatment is one of the most popular conformance control methods used in the petroleum industry. The advantage of the polymer gel system used in harsh reservoir conditions is an integrated process that must take into account all elements of gelation kinetics. In high-temperature applications, NH4Cl has been selected as a retarder to extend the gelation time of a PAM/PEI gel system. However, the gel network loses gel strength when salt and retarder increase, resulting in a weak gel structure, and becomes susceptible. The combination of these two variables leads to the development of

A high performance water resistance agent KD-3 prepared from OPC cement, fly ash, slag and additives was used for the modification of hemi-hydrate desulphurization gypsum. Various factors on gypsum block were investigated. The prepared gypsum block possesses excellent water-resistance, good operating property and high mechanical strength. The optimized results was obtained: calcined gypsum 74.9%, KD-3 25%, retarder 0.1%, curing temperature 60°C and curing time 16h.

A novel method that allows determining instantaneous concentration of calcium ions, Ca2+, in hydrated cement paste (HCP) is suggested. EDTA solution (belonging to a group of carboxylic acids/carboxylates and borates) seems to be very effective retarder altering nucleation and subsequent growth of newly forming clusters of calcium minerals. Concentrations of Ca2+ have been determined for various water to cement ratios, at different times and for given temperature.

A test-bed used to test electromagnetic eddy current retarder’s performance was designed. It can evaluate the connection of automobiles speed, excitation current, rotor temperature and brake torsion. Besides, a series of flywheels were designed which can randomly combine and simulate the running state of the automobiles. The design of flywheel is referred in many machines, not for it can solve the problem of stability, but for providing moment of inertia.

The energetic resolution is a main parameter of any thermal imager depending on the transmittance of its optical system. The optical system of a polarizing thermal imager (PTI) consists of a polarizer, a phase shifter and a lens arranged in series on the optical axis. This paper proposes a method for calculation of the energic transmittance of the PTI’s optical system for partially polarized radiation as a function of angular orientation of the polarizer and the phase retarder. We consider an interferometric fiber optic current sensor with a fiber coil operated in reflection and compare three different techniques to prepare the coil: thermally annealed coils, stress-free packaging of a bare low birefringent fiber in a fused silica capillary, and coils from highly birefringent spun fiber. In particular we theoretically and experimentally investigate how the fiber retarder that generates the near left and right circular light waves in the sensing fiber must be prepared for temperature compensation of the Faraday effect in the three cases. The essential component for these stimulation fluids is the carbonate-dissolving agent, which creates conductivity channels connecting the reservoir with the wellbore. Controlling the reactivity of hydrochloric acid (HCl), the most-used dissolving agent due to its high dissolving capacity, wide availability, and low unit cost, is the most viable approach to successfully stimulate a high-temperature carbonate reservoir. When the masonry walls of buildings under heritage protection need to be restored and thermally improved, the only option is to use an interior insulation system. This is also the riskiest method of insulating walls in cold climates. Capillary active interior insulation systems have been proven to be the most reliable, minimizing the risk of mold growth and decay caused by condensation. They have also been proven to be less risky in wind-driven rain. The building studied is situated in a heritage-conservation area in downtown Tartu, Estonia, and therefore cannot be insulated from the exterior.

The influence of different heat treatment processes on the strength of cements was not obvious and the strength development was good.
