Abstract:
Inflammatory factors, both centrally produced and released from adipocytes (fat cells), have been shown to affect metabolism and to contribute to the pathogenesis and development of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Inflammatory response has been shown to be affected by environmental stresses such as heat and cold exposure. The aim of this thesis was to study the effects of heat and cold stresses on inflammatory response over the course of 3 experiments which exposed healthy subjects to one of two heat intensities or to cold stress. Abstract:
The use of autonomous robots in our society is increasing every day and a robot is no longer seen as a tool but as a team member. The robots are now working side by side with us and provide assistance during dangerous operations where humans otherwise are at risk. This development has in turn increased the need of robots with more human-awareness. Therefore, this master thesis aims at contributing to the enhancement of human-aware robotics. Specifically, we are investigating the possibilities of equipping autonomous robots with the capability of assessing and detecting activities in human team

Abstract:
It is well established that soil is a challenging environment for bacteria, where conditions may change rapidly and bacteria have to acclimate and adapt in order to survive. Rhizobia are an important group of soil bacteria due to their ability to establish atmospheric nitrogen-fixing symbioses with many legume species. Some of these legumes are used to feed either humans or cattle and therefore the use of rhizobia can reduce the need for synthetic N-fertilizers. Several environmental factors shape the composition and the activity of rhizobia populations in the rhizosphere. Soil pH and temperat

Abstract:
Current crop and climate modeling studies predict temperature extremes that may add future challenges to global food and agriculture production systems due to yield decreases in our staple cereal crops. Although there have been some temperature stress adaptation traits and a few associated genes discovered in plants for enhanced thermotolerance, very little is known about these traits in our major cereal crops, particularly in maize. Furthermore, the limited availability of appropriate selection environments and accurate phenotyping, including functional traits for selection, have been major h
