Full textThe plateau of Giza is one of the most famous, if not most well-known, sites of Egypt, not far from Cairo. The history of the site is linked with the beginnings of the history of Egypt and the first dynasties. It will last, almost without any gap, until the Greco-Roman period. The pyramids of the IVth dynasty, erected by Khufu, Khephren and Mykerinos and the great sphinx, appear obviously as the most striking features of the site. Nevertheless its life will survive for two other millenniums after the end of the old kingdom. New cults appeared. The worshipping of Harmachis, as the Egyptians called the great sphinx, and his pilgrimage began during the 18th dynasty and lasted during the first millennium. At that time, the devotion to Isis was increasing; the goddess was known as the "mistress of the pyramids" who protected the whole site. The funerary chapel of the southern subsidiary pyramid, east of Khufu's pyramid, was restored and enlarged to be used as a cult chapel for Isis. Inscriptions and artefacts, stelae, statues, etc. Have been left by the priests and the worshippers of the goddess. A good part of them have not been published before. Owing to these new data, it has been possible to reconstruct the history of the site

Full textIn order to determine the interaction point of relativistic heavy ions in the Diogene target, we have built and tested an X-Y low pressure parallel plate avalanche chamber. It uses three thin metallized foils and is filled with isobutane. A preliminary study shows that it is the only detector with the required specifications: efficiency, accurate position determination and a small uniform amount of material (1. 9 mg/cm²) for the particle beam to go through. The electronics system is designed for reliability, easy adjustments and high stability. The interaction point is given on delay-line read-out. This represents the optimum compromise between low price and good performance. Laboratory measurements of gain, efficiency and position accuracy are done with an alpha-particle source. Two of these detectors are working at the Saturne National Laboratory. They allow the trajectory of several tens of particles (among a million per second) to be reconstructed. With an argon beam at 400 MeV per nucleon, the position uncertainty in the target has been measured to be 0. 5 mm (standard deviation). This uncertainty is 0. 3 mm for each detector, with an efficiency of 94 per cent. Our set-up, which is now operational, improves the accuracy of the results and speed of analysis of Diogene experiments devoted to the study of central collisions between heavy ions

Full textHeavy-ion accelerators are an essential tool for nuclear physics research. They are also adopted in several applications. It is necessary to characterize the secondary neutrons production in order to guarantee a safe operation in every circumstance in accelerators. However, experimental data are very rare or even non-existent. For some data, we notice disagreements between different publications. Disagreements are also observed between measurements data and simulations. For all these reasons, we established the program Thick Target Neutron Yields (TTNY). This program aims to measure the double differential neutron spectra (energy, angle) generated by the interactions of heavy-ions (12≤Abeam≤208 and 4.6 MeV/nucleon≤Ebeam≤95 MeV/nucleon) on thick targets (natC, natCu and natNb). Two measurements methods were adopted: Activation and Time of Flight. This choice allows having a better confidence on the measurements, studying experimental limits and consolidating the conclusions that could be drawn from the experimental results. The measurements are compared to the simulations performed with some Monte-Carlo widely used in nuclear simulation: PHITS (Japanese), FLUKA (European (CERN/INFN)) and MCNP (American). These comparisons allowed evaluating the modeling quality of heavy-ion reactions for the energies and masses explored in this work. We also conclude on the systematic uncertainties and on the potential improvements to be introduced to physics models of these codes
