Abstract:
X-ray crystal structure analyses of the 4-(4-halobenzylideneamino)TEMPO (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl) radicals 4-(4-fluorobenzylideneamino)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl, 4-(4-chlorobenzylideneamino)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl, 4-(4-bromobenzylideneamino)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl and 4-(4-iodobenzylideneamino)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl, and other 4-Ar—CH=N—TEMPO [Ar = 4-Ph-Ph, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-(4-phenylbenzylideneamino)piperidyl-1-oxyl, 4-Py, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-(4-pyridylmethylideneamino)piperidyl-1-oxyl, and 3,5-diCl-Ph, 4-(3,5-dichlorobenzylideneamino)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl] radicals have been performed at room temperature. Some of these radicals show intermolecular ferromagnetic interactions at extremely low temperatures. X-ray analysis revealed that crystals of the 4-I-Ph derivative showed two modifications [(a) and (b)]; measurements of the magnetic properties of these crystals showed a ferromagnetic transition at an extremely low temperature for modification (a) and an antiferromagnetic interaction for modification (b). The structural features of these TEMPO radical crystals can be classified into three groups: (i) the crystal structures of the 4-Cl-Ph, 4-I-Ph(a) and 4-Ph-Ph derivatives, which show a ferromagnetic transition; (ii) the structures of the 4-Br-Ph and 4-Py derivatives, which show a ferromagnetic interaction (θ > 0); (iii) miscellaneous: the antiferromagnetic 4-F-Ph and 4-I-Ph(b) derivatives (θ < 0) and the ferromagnetic 3,5-diCl-Ph (θ > 0) derivative. Sheet-like arrangements of O atoms and intra-sheet interactions through the CH2 or CH3 groups of the TEMPO rings are related to the mechanisms of the ferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are negatively charged colloidal particles well known to form highly stable surfactant-free Pickering emulsions. These particles can vary in surface charge density depending on their preparation by acid hydrolysis or applying post-treatments. CNCs with three different surface charge densities were prepared corresponding to 0.08, 0.16 and 0.64 e nm −2 , respectively. Post-treatment might also increase the surface charge density. The well-known TEMPO-mediated oxidation substitutes C 6 -hydroxyl groups by C 6 -carboxyl groups on the surface. We report that these different modified CNCs lead to stable oil-in-water emulsions. TEMPO-oxidized CNC might be the basis of further modifications. It is shown that they can, for example, lead to hydrophobic CNCs with a simple method using quaternary ammonium salts that allow producing inverse water-in-oil emulsions. Different from CNC modification before emulsification, modification can be carried out on the droplets after emulsification. This way allows preparing functional capsules according to the layer-by-layer process. As a result, it is demonstrated here the large range of use of these biobased rod-like nanoparticles, extending therefore their potential use to highly sophisticated formulations. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Soft interfacial materials: from fundamentals to formulation’.

Abstract:
Hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogels are very commonly applied as cell carriers for different approaches in regenerative medicine. HA itself is a well-studied biomolecule that originates from the physiological extracellular matrix (ECM) of mammalians and, due to its acidic polysaccharide structure, offers many different possibilities for suitable chemical modifications which are necessary to control, for example, network formation. Most of these chemical modifications are performed using the free acid function of the polymer and, additionally, lead to an undesirable breakdown of the biopolymer’s backbone. An alternative modification of the vicinal diol of the glucuronic acid is oxidation with sodium periodate to generate dialdehydes via a ring opening mechanism that can subsequently be further modified or crosslinked via Schiff base chemistry. Since this oxidation causes a structural destruction of the polysaccharide backbone, it was our intention to study a novel synthesis protocol frequently applied to selectively oxidize the C6 hydroxyl group of saccharides. On the basis of this TEMPO/TCC oxidation, we studied an alternative hydrogel platform based on oxidized HA crosslinked using adipic acid dihydrazide as the crosslinker.

Johnson, Richard Kwesi. "TEMPO-oxidized Nanocelluloses: Surface Modification and use as Additives in Cellulosic Nanocomposites." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29342.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of TEMPO-mediated oxidation has gained broad usage towards the preparation of highly charged, carboxyl-functionalized polysaccharides. TEMPO-oxidized nanocelluloses (TONc) of high surface charge and measuring 3 to 5 nm in width have been recently prepared from TEMPO-oxidized pulp. This study examines as-produced and surface-hydrophobized TONc as reinforcing additives in cellulosic polymer matrices. In the first part of the work, covalent (amidation) and non-covalent (ionic complexation) coupling were compared as treatment techniques for the hydrophobization of TONc surfaces with octadecylamine (ODA). Subsequently, TONc and its covalently coupled derivative were evaluated as nanofiber reinforcements in a cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) matrix. The properties of the resulting nanocomposites were compared with those of similarly prepared ones reinforced with conventional microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). It was found that both ionic complexation and amidation resulted in complete conversion of carboxylate groups on TONc surfaces. As a result of surface modification, the net crystallinity of TONc was lowered by 15 to 25% but its thermal decomposition properties were not significantly altered. With respect to nanocomposite performance, the maximum TONc reinforcement of 5 vol % produced negligible changes to the optical transmittance behavior and a 22-fold increase in tensile storage modulus in the glass transition region of CAB. In contrast, hydrophobized TONc and MFC deteriorated the optical transmittance of CAB by ca 20% and increased its tensile storage modulus in the glass transition region by only 3.5 and 7 times respectively. These differences in nanocomposite properties were attributed to homogeneous dispersion of TONc compared to aggregation of both the hydrophobized derivative and the MFC reference in CAB matrix. A related study comparing TONc with MFC and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) as reinforcements in hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), showed TONc reinforcements as producing the most significant changes to HPC properties. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis and creep compliance measurements could be interpreted based on similar arguments as those made for the CAB-based nanocomposites. Overall, this work revealed that the use of TONc (without the need for surface hydrophobization) as additives in cellulosic polymer matrices leads to superior reinforcing capacity and preservation of matrix transparency compared to the use of conventional nanocelluloses.<br>Ph. Russoniello, Julia Anne. "All that glitters in Elgar’s Sonata for Violin and Piano Op.82: a study in early twentieth-century expressivity and performance style." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/16320.

Full text
Abstract:
Early recordings of Elgar’s Sonata for Violin and Piano Op.82 and other English works from around 1920 reveal an expressive language that has all but disappeared from performance style today. This may be attributed to the dramatic shift away from the practices of late--‐Romantic musicians toward ‘modern’ style that occurred over the course of the twentieth century. The manner of interpretation of early twentieth--‐century works today therefore, may be markedly different from that which was envisaged at the time of composition. In this thesis I explore performing practices and style in early twentieth--‐century string playing as a means of informing a fresh and historically appropriate interpretation of Elgar’s Sonata for Violin and Piano. Evidence from recordings, string treatises and written accounts are used to shed light on the ‘sound world’ of Elgar’s time, focusing specifically on the use of portamento, vibrato, agogic accentuation and tempo modification. I uncover aspects of the expressive style undoubtedly allied to the early performances of this Sonata and identify historically appropriate performing practices that expand the palette of expressivity for this and other works of Elgar’s era.

Abstract:
The aim of this master's thesis is to explore and elaborate on the Wagnerian conception of "tempo modification" and its overall relevance in the temporal shaping of music in orchestral conducting. The argument is based on a study that aims to revitalise and establish the tempo identification as a conductor's primary area of interest. This phenomenon is studied through performances and recordings of Weber's Der Freischütz Overture. Terminology for different perspectives on temporal shaping is proposed. The historical impact of tempo modification is explored through a comparative audio analysis of three central recordings. The same analytical procedures are then subsequently applied to the author's two recordings, and a cross-comparison is carried out of all five recordings. The thesis further discusses the use of reduction as a method for a conductor's score analysis. Through this multi-layered analysis, the thesis suggests that tempo modification is a stylistically and historically contingent phenomenon, the application of which is indeed dependent on structural elements in the score, but most of all dependent on compositional style and performance practice.

Abstract:
This work is organized into two parts. The first, "temporal structure of butor's novels", and the second, "the notion of time". The first part comprises an analysis of the narrative temporality of these three novels. For this analysis, we used the process that gerard genette has proposed in his analysis of the temporality of proust. We isolated three temporal elements like genette order, speed, and frequency. The second part is a matter for quasi-philosophical study. For butor, time is the absolute destroyer. All of his work is built on this notion of time : we live within the horrible aspect of time, which is a disconcerting labyrinth imprisoned within this labyrinth, butor's characters lose themselves and are sucked down into the forgetting which is a more redoutable force than any other symptom of modern times. Butor advises us to know the past, the history, that is our origin, not to lose ourselves in the forgetting. The "return back" interminable that we can find out in his novels is an effort to fight against the forgetting. That's that is why cultural references abound in his novels

Abstract:
The paramount goal of musical study is to become more than a mere player of the instrument. Music is a language, and those with small hands struggle every day with central aspects of thinking and speaking in sound—how to forge a legato line from widely separated notes, how to deliver a powerful yet sonorous tone, how to voice textures spanning wide reaches of the keyboard. Small-handed pianists must thus be keenly aware of what they want to express and consider the means by which they can best communicate their thoughts, emotions, and ideas in sound. While the strategies discussed in previous chapters all describe physical interventions for counteracting challenges of small-handedness, Chapter 7 seeks answers by looking first to musical solutions, addressing issues including legato, fortissimo playing, pedaling, rhythmic inflection, tempo modification, rubato, voicing, and gestural shaping.

The transformation of the social, cultural, and musical landscape of DC hardcore is considered in the concluding chapter, investigating how and why the sound of hardcore changed after 1983. Covering four key DC post-hardcore bands—Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Beefeater, and Embrace—the chapter tracks the modifications and adjustments in sound through the frameworks of tempo, melodies, complexity, and genre-crossing, emotional vocals and lyrics, and the overt inclusion of politics in songs. The chapter continues with a discussion of the ways in which the sonic changes in post-hardcore in DC were happening across the country, spurring new crossover genres and expanding and questioning the limitations of hardcore.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Less intrusive information delivery has been a popular research topic for auditory displays. While most research has addressed this issue by creating new notification cues such as rendering ambient soundscapes or modifying background music, we present a novel method to gently deliver artificial notification sounds that have been commonly used in digital devices and for popular applications. We propose to play a notification sound by embedding it into the music that a user is listening to, after changing the musical timbre, amplitude, tempo, and octave of the notification to match these features of the music. To implement this concept, we extend a melody extraction algorithm for notification timbre transfer, and we present a pipeline that algorithmically selects a proper time spot and harmoniously embeds the notification into music. To validate our design concept, we present a user study comparing our method with the standard method of playing notification sounds on digital devices. Through an extensive analysis of 96 tasks performed by 32 participants, we demonstrate that our method can deliver notification sounds in a less intrusive but adequately noticeable manner and is preferred by most participants.

Abstract:
Sound is an essential yet under-studied way for robots to communicate with humans. When designed well, robot sound can improve aspects of human-robot interaction from social perception to team fluency, but at its worst, robot sound can discourage use of robots altogether. Thus, sound cues must be carefully and intentionally designed. To address this need, we present a system that uses the inherent emotional connotations of musical qualities to dynamically generate emotive sound for robots. Our application utilizes real-time modification of tempo, pitch, scale, and sound brightness to algorithmically generate melodic phrases intended to evoke specific moods or feelings in human listeners. An in-the-wild exploratory study with N = 26 participants demonstrated that our generative sounds caused human listeners to perceive the robot as happier and warmer. This effort is a first step toward a planned full system that will democratize the design of music-based emotional communication in human-robot interaction.

Abstract:
It is known that drivers often listen to music when they are in their vehicle. Listening to music while driving can impact drivers’ behaviours in several ways, through emotion induction or arousal changes for instance. It has already been shown that various musical tracks with different tempos (i.e. the music pace) can impair drivers’ performances (Brodsky, 2002). The current study focused on the impact of music tempo on vehicular control by using the same music track played at different tempos. Four experimental conditions associated with four different versions of the same track, differing only by their tempos, have been used while participants had to follow a lead vehicle and then drive with no particular constraints. Participants had to drive in a simulated environment without music, with the music track of their choice, with the music of their choice but with a modified tempo (+10% of the regular tempo and -10% of the regular tempo). Results indicated that the music tempo slightly changed the level of arousal of participants as observed through heart rate and subjective questionnaires data. However these changes in the arousal level did not translate into driving behaviours modifications (i.e. inter-vehicle time while following a lead vehicle and speed in free driving context).

Abstract:
Abstract Submission Summary A successful achievement by ASR ADNOC onshore started by accepting the challenge of testing Ultrasour gas wells. We are taping on additional reserve by carrying out the appraisal testing of sour gas wells with high H2S that contain H2S ranging from 20 to 40 % and CO2 11% approximately that is creating multiple challenges during testing and tie in the well. And due to high H2S compounded with extremely high temp and pressure the use of conventional material is not possible thus, creating multiple challenging while testing the gas wells in ADNOC Onshore fields. Another milestone of this project is evaluating the exotic material selection for sour wells, as well as HSE protocol modifications and utilizing the existing facilities in order to reduce the CAPEX &amp; OPEX for the production of highly sour gas using the blending studies development. So, this project is an example of success story that successfully managing the ultra-sour gas wells with high temp and pressure safely during drilling, tie-in and well testing operations. And once its potential is untapped the additional TCF (Trilliant Cubic Feet) gas will be available for the future generations.

Abstract:
Intense pulsed ion beam (IPIB), featured with pulsed high-power density, has been widely used in the modification of materials. The influence of IPIB irradiation on surface microstructure and phase structure of (TiZrNbTaCr)C ceramics was investigated in this work. Experiments were carried out using TEMP-4M accelerator with peak accelerating voltage, current density, and pulse duration (FWHM) of 220 kV, 150 A/cm2, and 80 ns respectively. Atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscope and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze the surface microstructure and phase structure of (TiZrNbTaCr)C ceramics under IPIB irradiation. The AFM and SEM images showed that the grain size of (TiZrNbTaCr)C increased, and the size and quantity of holes decreased after IPIB irradiation which might improve the erosion resistance of material. After IPIB irradiation, the segregation of Cr and Ta elements were observed by EDS measurement. The phase structure stability of samples under IPIB irradiation was confirmed by XRD and the lattice parameters and crystal spacing was discussed as well.

Abstract:
Abstract In many industries, such as automotive, oil and gas, aerospace, medical technologies, electronic parts can often be exposed to high strain loads during shocks, vibrations and drop-impact conditions. Such electronic parts can often be subjected to extreme low and high temperatures ranging from −65°C to 200°C. Also, these electronic devices can be subjected to strain rates of 1 to 100 per second in the critical environment. Recently, many doped SAC solder alloys are being introduced in the electronic component including SAC-Q, SAC-R, Innolot. SAC-Q is made with addition of Bi in Sn-Ag-Cu composition. Mechanical characteristic results and data for lead-free solder alloys are extremely important for optimizing electronic package reliability, at high temperature storage and elevated strain rates. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of solder alloys can be changed significantly due to a thermal aging, which is causing modification of microstructure. Data for the SAC-Q solder alloy with a high temp aging and testing at extreme low to high operating temperatures are not available. SAC-Q material was tested and analyzed for this study at range of operating temperatures of −65°C to 200°C and at a strain rate up to 75 per second. After the specimens were manufactured and reflowed, specimens were stored at 100°C for the isothermal aging for up to 90 days, before tensile tests were carried out at different operating temperatures. For the wide range of strain rates and test temperatures, stress-strain curves are established. In addition, the measured experimental results and data were fitted to the Anand viscoplasticity model and the Anand constants were calculated by estimating the stress-strain behavior measured in the wide range of operating temperatures and strain rates.
