Escudier, Marcel. Introduction to Engineering Fluid Mechanics. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198719878.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Turbojet and turbofan engines, rocket motors, road vehicles, aircraft, pumps, compressors, and turbines are examples of machines which require a knowledge of fluid mechanics for their design. The aim of this undergraduate-level textbook is to introduce the physical concepts and conservation laws which underlie the subject of fluid mechanics and show how they can be applied to practical engineering problems. The first ten chapters are concerned with fluid properties, dimensional analysis, the pressure variation in a fluid at rest (hydrostatics) and the associated forces on submerged surfaces, the relationship between pressure and velocity in the absence of viscosity, and fluid flow through straight pipes and bends. The examples used to illustrate the application of this introductory material include the calculation of rocket-motor thrust, jet-engine thrust, the reaction force required to restrain a pipe bend or junction, and the power generated by a hydraulic turbine. Compressible-gas flow is then dealt with, including flow through nozzles, normal and oblique shock waves, centred expansion fans, pipe flow with friction or wall heating, and flow through axial-flow turbomachinery blading. The fundamental Navier-Stokes equations are then derived from first principles, and examples given of their application to pipe and channel flows and to boundary layers. The final chapter is concerned with turbulent flow. Throughout the book the importance of dimensions and dimensional analysis is stressed. A historical perspective is provided by an appendix which gives brief biographical information about those engineers and scientists whose names are associated with key developments in fluid mechanics.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of inventing a national musical tradition for newly independent Vietnam demanded the inclusion of appropriate features from the minority cultures. Scholars compiled studies of these groups and ascribed musical instruments and styles to particular people. Composers and performers were then encouraged, via the awards and honors that were bestowed upon them by the Communist Party, to incorporate these features into their musical palettes. Lương Kim Vĩnh, a state-employed musician from the Viet majority, successfully modified the Hmong reed pipe for use in modern national music, and he became internationally renowned for his innovative compositions and performances on this instrument. Chapter 2 examines the evolution of his “Hmong” sound, which has become a synecdoche for a wider pan-minority sound in contemporary Vietnam. His development of the modified reed pipe is used as a lens for studying the assimilation of the musical Other into Vietnamese modern national music.

Campbell, Colin, and Pamela Attwell. Intervening in secure settings. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198791874.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter begins by reviewing the existing evidence base for services for personality disordered offenders within secure settings, outlining approaches used both in the UK and internationally. The chapter goes on to describe the implementation of the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy in secure services, setting out the commissioning context and the focus on social environments, including Psychologically Informed Planned Environments (PIPEs) and Enabling Environments. It reviews the approach chosen by the London Pathways Partnership in terms of service model (residential, day programme, and outreach) and the intensity of the interventions used. The delivery of the services is then described in detail, including the development phase; referrals and assessment; intervention; and pathway progression. The chapter reviews the progress of the services over the first four years, including what worked and what didn’t, and concludes with an outline of evaluations of the services and proposals for future developments.

Wade, Stephen. Bill Stepp. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036880.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Kentuckian Bill Stepp, who worked as a logger in his younger days, then later turned his energies to fiddling for neighborhood hoedowns. Stepp is the creative source of an American anthem. In 1942 his rendition of the tune “Bonaparte's Retreat” became incorporated, nearly note for note, in the score of Rodeo, Aaron Copland's acclaimed modern ballet. By the early 1970s it appeared as “Hoedown,” an FM radio hit for Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, a symphonically oriented English rock band. Later, it formed the soundtrack for the beef growers' commercial, and finally, in this, an example of its continuing presence in American life, it recurs in the music piped down the hallways of a modern airport.

Hepburn, Allan. Bombed Churches. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198828570.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
More often than not, the blitz was represented by bombed churches. Images of St Paul’s Cathedral soaring above smoke and, in a more tragic key, the ruins of St Michael’s Cathedral in Coventry encapsulate the values that Britons thought they were fighting for in the Second World War. John Piper, Cecil Beaton, Hanslip Fletcher, and other visual artists, many of them employed by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee (WAAC), expressed their ideas about British heritage through paintings, drawings, and photographs of church architecture. At the same time, writers such as Virginia Woolf, John Strachey, John Betjeman, and Louis MacNeice modulated their patriotism—with quibbles and caveats—into ‘a faith to fight for’. Drawing on poetry, novels, tracts, newspaper articles, and visual culture, this chapter demonstrates the propagandistic value of bombed churches during the Second World War, then flashes forward to the consecration of the rebuilt cathedral in Coventry, which opened with great fanfare and an arts festival in May 1962.

Vanel, Hervé. Muzak Incorporated. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252037993.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the history of Muzak. The Oxford English Dictionary defines Muzak as “the proprietary name of a system of piped music for factories, restaurants, supermarkets, etc.; also used loosely, with small initial, to designate recorded light background music generally.” Muzak “proper” owes its name to General George Owen Squier (1865–1934), a chief signal officer in the United States Army who, in 1922, founded Wired Inc., a company “employ[ing] electric power lines to transmit news programs, music, lectures, general entertainment and advertising directly into private homes.” In 1934, inspired by the catchy, popular brand name of Kodak, Squier himself renamed his company Muzak. Since then, the brand name Muzak has eased itself into the vernacular language to become a common name denoting an entire genre of music known for being bad. Despite the company's relentless efforts to improve or simply to correct its image, the reputation of Muzak remains frankly disastrous.

Eller, Jonathan R. Futuria Fantasia. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036293.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Ray Bradbury's fanzine Futuria Fantasia, in which he championed the Technocracy movement based on the premise that if the technological infrastructure were more efficient, then everyone's life would be better. It discusses Bradbury's editorship of Futuria Fantasia, the second issue of which reflected his emerging editorial insight; it contained essays written by Henry Hasse and Henry Kuttner. It suggests that, in soliciting the Hasse and Kuttner contributions, Bradbury was initiating a debate on the state of writing in the science fiction field. The second issue also featured two stories by Hannes Bok, whose illustrations graced all of the fanzine's covers, as well as Bradbury's anonymous story “The Pendulum” and a poem entitled “Satan's Mistress.” The chapter concludes with an assessment of Bradbury's problems with the production of Futuria Fantasia, culminating in its demise after the fourth issue, which carried Bradbury's story “The Piper,” his first solo sale to the genre prozines.

Pachana, Nancy A., Victor Molinari, Larry W. Thompson, and Dolores Gallagher-Thompson, eds. Psychological Assessment and Treatment of Older Adults. Hogrefe Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1027/00571-000.

Full text
Abstract:
Mental health practitioners are encountering an ever-growing number of older adults and so an up-to-date and comprehensive text addressing the special considerations that arise in the psychological assessment and treatment of this population is vital. This accessible handbook does just that by introducing the key topics that psychologists and other health professionals face when working with older adults. Each area is introduced and then the special considerations for older adults are explored, including specific ethical and healthcare system issues. The use of case examples brings the topics further to life. An important feature of the book is the interweaving of diversity issues (culture, race, sexuality, etc.) within the text to lend an inclusive, contemporary insight into these important practice components. The Pikes Peak Geropsychology Knowledge and Skill Assessment Tool is included in an appendix so readers can test their knowledge, which will be helpful for those aiming for board certification in geropsychology (ABGERO). This an ideal text for mental health professionals transitioning to work with older clients, for those wanting to improve their knowledge for their regular practice, and for trainees or young clinicians just starting out.

Zinn, S., and S. L. Semiatin. Elements of Induction Heating. ASM International, 1988. http://dx.doi.org/10.31399/asm.tb.eihdca.9781627083416.

Full text
Abstract:
Elements of Induction Heating: Design, Control, and Applications discusses the principles of electromagnetic induction and the setup and use of induction heating processes and equipment. The first few chapters cover the theory of induction heating and the factors that must be considered when selecting and configuring components for a given application. As the text explains, the frequency required for efficient heating is determined by the geometry of the coil, the properties, size, and shape of the workpiece, and the need to maintain adequate skin effect. It also depends on proper tuning and load matching, which is explained as well. Subsequent chapters discuss the use of external cooling, temperature sensing, and power-timing devices, the fundamentals of process control, the role of flux concentrators, shields, and susceptors, and the integration of material handling equipment. The book also covers coil design and fabrication and explains how induction heating systems can be tailored for specific applications such as billet and bar heating, surface hardening, pipe welding, tin reflow, powder metal sintering, and brazing, and for curing adhesives and coatings.
