Abstract The Full Set II system is the best known of the innovative systems. In at least five Cariban languages-Kap6n, Makushi, Pem6n, Kuikuru, and Kalapalo-the re analysis has established itself so firmly that all linguists who have worked on these languages consider it to be the basic system. The semantic and pragmatic arguments for reanalysis are indeed compelling: not only do verbs in Full Set II predicates translate into eventive clauses, but also they are so frequent that they have virtually wiped out all vestiges of the Set I system.
