The capacity for online learning environments to provide good quality learning experiences for students has been the focus of speculation and debate in the higher education sector from the late 1990s to the present day. In this area, “quality” has become synonymous with engaging students in a learning community. This chapter reports on a qualitative research project designed to explore the significance of community for students studying online. Using three fundamentally different types of online learning environments as case studies, this research explored the relationship between the constructed online learning environment and the development of learning communities or what the author has termed social learning support networks (SLSN). Exploring the common themes to emerge from these three case studies, this research provides new evidence of the benefit of community for students studying online and argues that future online learning environments should be shaped by five key principles designed to foster a sense of social connection between students.

Chapter 2 documents the establishment of demography, the social science of human population dynamics, in the United States during the 1930s. It contends that this interdisciplinary field was able to build an institutional structure because of support from eugenicist Frederick Osborn, who saw in demography an ally for the creation of a postracial democratic version of eugenics. Osborn’s new brand of eugenics emphasized birth control rather than sterilization and worked through the private sector rather than the public sector. He fused birth control advocacy with eugenics in a strategy he termed “family planning,” which signaled reproductive autonomy in the context of social control. Osborn secured patronage for demography from the Milbank Memorial Fund and the Carnegie Corporation, and an audience for demographic research in the New Deal welfare state. He leveraged his influence to focus demography’s research program on producing support for his family planning–based eugenic project.

Large scale computer user management systems such as digital ticketing and social networking are creating vast amount of data. Such data systems can contain information generated by potentially millions of individuals. This kind of data has been termed big data. The analysis of big data can in its spatial but also in a temporal and social nature be of much interest for analysis in the context of cities and urban areas. This chapter discusses this potential along with a selection of sample work and an in-depth case study. Hereby the focus is mainly on the use and employment of insight gained from social media data, especially the Twitter platform, in regards to cities and urban environments. The first part of the chapter discusses a range of examples that make use of big data and the mapping of digital social network data. The second part discusses the way the data is collected and processed. An important section is dedicated to the aspects of ethical considerations. A summary and an outlook are discussed at the end.

Ongoing financial, environmental and political adjustments have shifted the role of large international airports. Many airports are expanding from a narrow concentration on operating as transportation centers to becoming economic hubs. By working together, airports and other industry sectors can contribute to and facilitate not only economic prosperity, but create social advantage for local and regional areas in new ways. This transformation of the function and orientation of airports has been termed the aerotropolis or airport metropolis, where the airport is recognized as an economic centre with land uses that link local and global markets. This chapter contends that the conversion of an airport to a sustainable airport metropolis requires more than just industry clustering and the existence of ‘hard’ physical infrastructure. Attention must also be directed to the creation and on-going development of social infrastructure within proximate areas and the maximization of connectivity flows within and between infrastructure elements. It concludes that the establishment of an interactive and interdependent infrastructure trilogy of hard, soft and social infrastructures provides the necessary balance to the airport metropolis to ensure sustainable development. This chapter provides the start of an operating framework to integrate and harness the infrastructure trilogy to enable the achievement of optimal and sustainable social and economic advantage from airport cities.

This chapter contends that the conversion of an airport to a sustainable airport metropolis requires more than just industry clustering and the existence of ‘hard’ physical infrastructure. Attention must also be directed to the creation and on-going development of social infrastructure within proximate areas and the maximization of connectivity flows within and between infrastructure elements. It concludes that the establishment of an interactive and interdependent infrastructure trilogy of hard, soft and social infrastructures provides the necessary balance to the airport metropolis to ensure sustainable development. This chapter provides the start of an operating framework to integrate and harness the infrastructure trilogy to enable the achievement of optimal and sustainable social and economic advantage from airport cities.

This chapter is the second section of Kadivar’s ‘Treatise on Refuting the Punishment for Blasphemy and Apostasy’. Lankarani claimed: “Killing an apostate does not require a juridical ruling. Therefore, any Muslim can implement it.” Kadivar regarded this as a dangerous “terror fatwa” that is null and void from the perspective of both shar‘ and reason, and have warned him that its only possible aftermath is anarchy and social disorder. The chapter has three sections: Interrogating the Death Penalty for Apostasy, Analysis of the Death Penalty for Blasphemy, and What is the Position of the Jurists on one who Denigrates the Prophet? The death penalty for blasphemy and apostasy is supported by no more than two “isolated hadiths” (khabar al-wāḥid), both of which have strongly contested chains of transmission and indication. Such an important judgement cannot be supported by such extremely weak and shaky proofs. Thus, pronouncing the death penalty for blasphemy and apostasy in the absence of reliable proofs contradicts the shar‘, debilitates Islam and violates the Qur’anic dictates.

Abstract:
The intent of this chapter is to describe the general framework of emergency public health and emergency medical services operations in disaster events in order to inform the planning and conduct of the evaluation study. The objective of disaster medical and public health response operations is to deliver immediate health care relief to an affected population until ‘pre-event’ health services can be restored. The functions of the health sector described in this chapter are termed basic societal/support functions or emergency support functions. Each function carries with it a series of activities or interventions; therefore, it seems reasonable to identify and study these activities from the perspective of the user rather than from an event-specific viewpoint. It is important to note that the outcomes or level of performance of these activities be assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively within the context of the larger evaluation study. More importantly, the data collected through systematic evaluation in these cases should be uniformly reported so as to make them generalizable to similar hazard events, thereby facilitating the creation of an ‘all-hazards’ repository of information on disasters. In this chapter we describe a generalized disaster response framework, including a ‘concept of operations’, for the public health and medical components of a disaster response system.
