Full textDung beetles and termites are insects of great ecological importance due to the environmental services that they provide. Habitat fragmentation has a negative effect on both insect groups but some species can benefit by increasing their abundance. Even in degraded habitats, these insects continue to perform their environmental services, but not as efficient as occur in preserved areas. This study aimed to analyze the effect of habitat fragmentation on the diversity and feces removal of facultative coprophagous termites and dung beetles. The study was conducted in two different land use systems located in Alfenas-MG, southeastern Brazil: forest fragments of Atlantic rain forest and pastures. Dung beetles were collected by using pitfall traps and termites were captured directly from excrement plates. Feces removal was evaluated in artificial arenas (beetles) and with traps (termites) with different mesh openings. The results showed that dung beetles were more abundant during the rainy season. Additionally, the removal of feces was higher in the forest fragments during this season. On the other hand, termites removed more feces in the pastures during the dry season. Termites showed preference for dried feces whereas beetles were observed exploiting humid feces since they feed on the liquid rich in nutrients and microorganisms. The results suggest a tradeoff between food preference and removal of feces through the seasons leading to an indirect competition among these insects. When the loss of water becomes more pronounced, the dung beetles leave fecal masses which are then exploited by the termites. This effect is more pronounced in the pastures during the dry season. In this context, termites were more efficient in feces removal in degraded areas were the diversity of dung beetles is low.

Full textThe frontal gland of termite soldiers produces compounds that act in the defense of the colony. Morphologically, soldiers are responsible for defending the nest against natural enemies, but factors such as density and environmental issues can modify the defensive behavior of this caste. Soldiers of Syntermitinae have morphological characteristics that define the subfamily: presence of a nasus (projection of the head) and functional jaws. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavioral defense repertoire of Syntermitinae soldiers in the social context under laboratory conditions. The following species were used in this study: Cornitermes cumulans, Embiratermes festivellus, Procornitermes araujoi, Silvestritermes euamignathus and Syntermes obtusus. Both soldiers and workers participated in the defense of the colony. Attacks by both castes resulted in injuries or death of intruders and morphologically related species showed similar behavioral patterns. Additionally, our results suggest that soldiers modulate their behavioral responses according to the type of intruder. On the other hand, the frontal gland secretion was able to induce alarm behavior only in C. cumulans and P. araujoi. The results suggested that the defensive behavior is not restricted to soldiers and the responses varied according the social context involved.

Full textThe paper analyses the origin and structure of linguistic terms used in J. Palionis textbook. The paper describes the origin and composition of terms as well as the structure of compound terms and syntactical relations of components. It establishes the percentage of different types of terms (one-words and compounds; Lithuanian, hybrid and international, etc). The total of 2280 terms were collected. The gathered terms are attached in the alphabetical order in the Terms Index of the final section of the paper. This paper considers the terms as nouns. The second section discusses the origin of linguistic one-word terms provided in the textbook “Basics of Linguistics“ by J. Palionis – it identifies and describes Lithuanian, international and hybrid terms as well as discusses the composition of terms. Lithuanian and hybrid terms are grouped on the basis of the methods of composition (suffixes, endings, derivatives and compounds of prefixes) and international terms are grouped into original, compounds and ambiguous terms. The third section deals with the structure of compound terms. It discusses separately compound two-word, three- word and multi-word terms. The section also describes the origin of components of compound terms. The terms are grouped on the basis of the syntactical relations of their components and the structure. The final section of the paper presents the summarized conclusions of the analysis, references and the list of literature.
