This thesis is concerned with development of a terrain model using Gaussian Processes to support the automation of open-pit mines. Information can be provided from a variety of sources including GPS, laser scans and manual surveys. The information is then fused together into a single representation of the terrain together with a measure of uncertainty of the estimated model. The model is also used to detect and label specific features in the terrain. In the context of mining, theses features are edges known as toes and crests. The aim of this project is to show the capabilities of a RANS based numerical model in accurately analysing wind flow over real terrain regions, and assess its usage for wind energy applications. The main reasons this type of model is not widely used in the wind energy industry are due to the computational cost and the expertise required to operate such a model. These factors are assessed and various setups of the model are examined to consider the accuracy attained. The modelling process is also automated to reduce necessary user input in the process. Abstract:
Understanding information diffusion on complex networks is a key issue from a theoretical and applied perspective. Epidemiology-inspired SIR models have been proposed to model information diffusion. Recent papers have analyzed this question from a data-driven perspective. We complement these findings investigating if epidemic models calibrate with a systematic procedure are capable of reproducing key spreading cascade properties. We first identify a large-scale, rich dataset from which we can reconstruct the diffusion trail and the underlying network. Secondly, we examine the simple SIR model
