Zusammenfassung. Obwohl Schlangenbisse in Europa insgesamt selten sind, kommt es auch in der Schweiz regelmässig zu Bissen von Giftschlangen. Zwei Giftschlangen sind in der Schweiz heimisch: die Aspisviper (Vipera aspis) und die Kreuzotter (Vipera berus). Ursächlich für die Giftschlangenbisse sind neben den heimischen Arten v.a. Bisse von exotischen Tieren, die in Terrarien gehalten werden. Ein Biss kann zu lokalen wie auch systemischen Vergiftungserscheinungen führen. Potenziell tödliche systemische Komplikationen betreffen die Hämostase, das kardiovaskuläre System wie auch das Nervensystem.

Nachdem Whiteheadia bifolia (Pagoden-Lilie, Hyacinthaceae) vor kurzem in Südafrika als nagerbestäubt identifiziert wurde, wird jetzt der Kap-Rüsselspringer (Elephantulus edwardii, Ordnung Macroscelidea) als weiterer Bestäuber beschrieben. Nahe Whiteheadia-Pflanzen gefangene Tiere wurden in zwei Terrarien gegeben, welche die Pflanzen enthielten. Während die Rüsselspringer Nektar mit ihren langen dünnen Zungen aufleckten, wurden sie mit Pollen eingestäubt und berührten die Narben der Blüten mit ihren langen und beweglichen Nasen. Because of sudden death of several frogs following the renewal of a terrarium, two giant ditch frogs (Leptodactylus fallax) were submitted for post-mortem examination. The animals displayed extensive erythematous to ulcerative skin lesions as well as multiple granulomas in the liver, kidney and skeletal musculature.
