Tail loss is followed rapidly by regeneration, revealing the importance of a fully functional tail. Predation pressure has been traditionally correlated with autotomy performance. However there is a lack of evidence regarding the impact of predation regime on tail regeneration. Another important factor that has been neglected is the population density. Abstract:
This study describes the ability of a captive Chinese cobra (Naja atra) to spit venom and presents a video analysis of a strike and spit manoeuvre. However, among the many specimens of N. atra raised by the author only the female examined in this study regularly displayed spitting behaviour, and then only within the confines of its terrarium. Fang morphology of N. atra was investigated by microscopy and compared with that of a ‘true’ spitting cobra, Naja sputatrix. The results show that N. atra does not have specially modified fangs so that venom is ejected downwards from the fangs, not forwar

AbstractDuring a continuous population study of Vipera ursinii rakosiensis, 79 specimens were measured in the field, between 1993 and 1997. Body length and body mass of six juveniles were compared to those of 43 more specimens which were kept during their first winter in terraria. Significant differences were found in favour of the juveniles kept in captivity, whereas a comparison with earlier data from 1953 showed a strong decline in juvenile body mass. Based on body size, three age classes could be distinguished in the study population. The annual activity and reproductive cycle of the Hunga

ABSTRACT The rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) is a venomous viper inhabiting the southeastern parts of the United States. It is not found in the Balkans and Europe habitats. Subjects of the species are grown and seen in museums, exhibitions and terrariums, and sometimes in private collections. This may generate potentially toxic exposures to the venom in accidental contact. Acute poisoning with rattlesnake poison in Bulgaria is exotic, rare and even casuistic. The venom of the rattlesnake exhibits neuropathic, proteolytic and hemolytic activities. Antivenom is not currently easily available i

Day geckos of the genus Phelsuma are small green lizards, originating in the Western Indian Ocean. As curious and cosmopolitan animals, they were and are involved in flows of translocal circulation, intertwining human and nonhuman agency in shaping their environments in significant ways – despite their obvious smallness. Transforming from scientific specimen into species, into terrarium pet, and then further into either endangered and invasive species, Phelsuma geckos co-create living rooms, taxonomic collections, island gardens and nature reserves, particularly between Europe and the islands
